Next Challenge For McCoy, Brian Urlacher And Lance Briggs

LeSean McCoy will look to follow up his career day with a second primetime game in a row on Monday night when the 3-4 Philadelphia Eagles host the 4-3 Chicago Bears. After torching the number one ranked run defense for 185 yards, the NFC Offensive Player of week 8 will take on the Chicago Bears and their 12th ranked run defense.

McCoy missed Thursday’s practice with what is being reported as a stomach flu but Andy Reid doesn’t expect him to miss any more time.

Chicago’s run defense used to be consistently in the top 5 in the league season after season. Anchored in the middle by two of the best linebackers in the league, Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher, the Bears haven’t been particularly lights out against the run this season allowing 108.7 yards per game.

The Bears have been soft against the run and have allowed at least 100 rushing yards in five of their first seven games, three resulting in losses. Chicago’s worst performance in run defense came just one week prior to letting up 169 to the Panthers’ running back duo and Cam Newton. In week 5, Jahvid Best went for 163 yards on just 12 carries (13.6 yard average) giving the Bears their second straight game allowing 160 rushing yards.

Since being dominated on the ground in weeks 4 and 5, the Bears run defense has stepped up. In weeks 6 and 7, opposing running backs combined for 22 carries and just 67 yards with a single touchdown. One of those running backs was arguably the top back in the league, Adrian Peterson, who could only muster up a lousy 39 yards after averaging just under 100 yards per game prior to his matchup against Chicago.

McCoy is currently first in the league in yards per game with almost 108 yards per game. After his huge game against Dallas on primetime, Shady is currently averaging 140 yards and 2 touchdowns per game when in primetime this season.

The league’s best performer in converting first downs is also boasting his career best in yards per carry average with 5.6 ypc through 7 games. With 8 rushing touchdowns, McCoy already has a career high in rushing touchdowns for a season.

The former Pittsburgh Panther will be running behind the Eagles full starting offensive line for only the second time this season. Following the Eagles big day against the Cowboys, the offensive line won John Madden’s weekly Madden Protectors Award. Not only did the offensive line pave the way for McCoy’s big day, they also gave Michael Vick one of his best games of career. Vick went 21-for-27 with 279 yards and two touchdowns to pair with his 50 rushing yards on seven carries.

Fresh off a bye week, it is a question as to which defense will show up for Chicago. It could be the defense that allowed 332 rushing yards in two weeks, giving McCoy an open field to run all over this defense. Or, it could be the defense that allowed 67 yards in two weeks against Adrian Peterson and a mixture of Buccaneers running backs, which might bring LeSean McCoy back down to earth for one week.
