Tired Of The Same Old Song, It’s Time For Andy To Go

Maybe Jerome Bettis’ comments earlier this week about Bill Cowher possibly being willing to coach the Eagles has ruffled Andy Reid’s feathers. Maybe it was Kevin Kolb knowing the Eagles’ plays. Maybe Andy is feeling the heat from the higher ups. Or, maybe, he realizes he’s lost this team and it’s only a matter of time before the bubble bursts on his thirteen year Eagles reign.

Whatever the reason, Coach Reid was very defensive with the media at his Wednesday news conference. In particular, his ire seemed to be drawn after a question about what happens during the course of a game when LeSean McCoy doesn’t get as many touches as he should. The head coach responded by saying, “I get asked a lot of questions like that, is what happens. We’re going to do what we think is best to win the game, and that’s how we’re going to go about it.”

And then, when asked why it was best to not give McCoy the ball, Reid replied, “That was just the choice we made.” The problem with that is the choice they made was wrong. McCoy has produced like the elite running back he is this season, but for some reason (perhaps the same unknown reason Andy and company would abandon the run when Duce Staley and Brian Westbrook were here) he doesn’t get the ball nearly enough.

Shady is second in the NFL in rushing yards, and he’s averaging a ridiculous 5.5 yards per rush. In other words, run the ball on back to back plays with McCoy, and the Eagles are just about guaranteed to gain a first down. Not giving him the ball consistently in the fourth quarter as you’re holding a lead is inexcusable. The guy has been nothing short of a beast, and if he was getting the ball as much as he should, the Eagles 3-6 record could be reversed right now.

They held fourth quarter leads against the 49ers, the Bears, and the Cardinals. But instead of running the ball and taking time off the clock, the coaching staff decided to throw even though Michael Vick hasn’t necessarily been the model of accuracy. And, as a result, here we are.

With seven games left, the Eagles are all but dead. One thing that can be said about Reid is that over the last decade plus there haven’t been many years when the Eagles were playing meaningless football in early December. But now we are just about there. If it finally gets to the point where the front office feels like a coaching change is inevitable, then maybe all these blunders have been blessings in disguise. Year after year of the same old thing has left many fans longing for a new approach.

The talent is certainly there, but a lack of discipline, chemistry, and an ineffective defensive scheme has prevented this team from reaching its full potential. That falls on the broad shoulders of the head coach.  Defensive coordinator Juan Castillo told reporters today that Andy is working between 21-22 hours a day. Obviously, the overtime isn’t working.

When it gets to the point where the head coach is burning himself out to fix a mess that he ultimately is responsible for, then something has to give. I’m not sure Cowher would necessarily be the answer. It actually took him one more year than Andy has now to win his only Super Bowl in Pittsburgh.

But there has to be someone out there with a fresh outlook and approach that would benefit this team going forward. Someone that realizes when you have an elite player like a Lesean McCoy, you put the offense on his shoulders and let him carry you. Someone who understands that linebackers and safeties matter, and that drafting productive defensive players can actually help your team.

It’s long overdue. Reid has had more than enough time to accomplish the ultimate goal of winning a Lombardi trophy. He hasn’t achieved that goal. The “Gold Standard” that Jeffrey Lurie has claimed the Eagles to be is nothing more than a joke when their trophy case remains barren. When you look back at some of the talent that has played here the last 13 years, it’s unbelievable that they haven’t claimed at least one championship. Donovan McNabb took a lot of the heat when he was here, but he’s long gone. The only people left from that era are the head coach and some of his assistants. They haven’t gotten the job done. It’s time to get someone in here who can.

In the last five days, we’ve seen Reid suspend a player for missing a meeting even though he hasn’t always done the same thing with other players. We’ve seen him neglect to change the offensive signals when the opposing team’s injured quarterback, who used to play for the Eagles, knows their plays.

And, as usual, we continued to see his stubborn, unchanging ways when it comes to moving the football. At this point, a change is a necessity.  Reid has had his chance to bring that elusive title to Philadelphia. He came damn close a couple of times. But damn close isn’t good enough anymore. Andy, the time’s yours. Time to move on and let someone else lead this franchise.

Man forget Andy… I watched bits and pieces of the game last night. I saw DAWK being DAWK out there. Man I miss that. He was laying it all on the line, blowing people up. I don’t care if he lost a step either. He’s a physical presence and you better have your head on a swivel. How many of them do we have now… just one of the many STUPID personnel decisions.

A lot better than Fokou,Chaney,Rolle or Matthews, that’s for sure nev856..
Joe Mays is acutally having a very good season has turned out to be a solid player at LB, he’s a much better tackler than anyone else on the Eagles squad, he still needs work on his pass-coverage, but he’s a stud versus the run and in short-yardage/red-zone Situatuions from what I’ve seen of him from last season and this season so far..

I don’t want to hear Lurie and the FO making excuses for Reid/Castillo at end of season saying this whole mess occurred because of no OTA’s and lockout!!! Every team in league has had to face same limited off-season. Get Reid out of here JEFFREY!! And while you’re at it, think about bringing in some scouts, etc who know how to evaluate/recognize defensive talent for draft.

My thought is this kind of result was already talked about during the off-season – that it could be a down year but a foundation for the next two seasons.

You have new players, coaches, schemes and these take time to implement. I think we’ll have Big Red at least for next year and maybe the year after if they get real close next year.

If next year is anything like this year, it will surely be Andy’s last season. I’d hate to see him go (I think his positives outweigh his negatives) but the team may need a change and Andy needs some time off before he suffers cardiac arrest. The man works too much and carries too much around, both physically and emotionally, to remain healthy and sane.

Say “good bye” to my big friend… “in my scarface voice” ANDY has to go.The Eagles are more concerned with making money than winning a “Superbowl”. Man there is so much talent in the SEC, why are we not drafting more talent from the SEC… forget the Big 10… BUT the SEC brings a little edge type of player, and Andy doesn’t want that type. You could probably take LSU, Auburn or Alabama’s starting Backers right now and they would be better than ours…

I agree with the premise…. Ive had enough of Andy…. I like the guy, but its time to give up on him and his ideas…

he refuses to balance the offense and run the ball like he should…. He has had plenty of pretty good teams that simply needed a tweek here and there and he has never made ALL the proper adjustments in one season where he could win the city a title….

I have given up hope that he’ll ever learn… time to fire Reid

prediction: Andy Reid is going to “resign” after the season (Lurie won’t FIRE him). Andy will then get the Dolphins job. He will draft USC QB Matt Barkley to build the franchise around and will turn the Dolphins into a good team.

The Redskins will make a run at Andy, however, Lurie will add stipulations to the “resignation” that Andy not take a job in the NFC East.

I think a great hire would be HC Bob Stoops from Oklahama and he can hire his brother Jim Stoops as the Defensive Coordinator while Bob Stoops concentrates on the Offense.. I think Bob Stoops is getting a little restless and bored at the NCAA Level and at Oklahoma, though he has good teams every Season ..

I believe Coach AR is back for 2012 (with his complete staff minus Castillo)
and 2012 will be it for him, He will then retire after 2012, as the EAgles then clean house and start anew.. I see AR moving back out west and sit out a year or 2 and then come back to take over a College Program..
I see the University of Colorado, UCLA, as good ones for him since they are in the Pac-12 COnference and play a lot in California where he is originally from or I could see him up at BYU,Bosie State and hell even the Air Force Academy with his connections and work for the Military..
I think he will defintitely Coach, but I believe at the College level where he would probably be more successful and enjoy the job of teaching and coaching again..

Reid always overlooks the obvious and has for 13 years. As Rasheed 1 says he always misses something that can get us over the edge and this year he has just outright missed. Andy take Juan and Chad and go to BYU and pass 95% of the time. You are no quaterback maker. The three you chose and molded are not performing. To the author of this article–I am on board with getting rid of Reid, hs message and wys are getting stale after 13 years, however, let me point a few things out in your article which is pure fallacy–

1. You point out that the Eagles had leads against the Bears, Cards, and 49ers. Well, the lead over the Bears was 4, the Cards 7, and the 49ers 6—hardly insurmountable.

2. What happens when they start crowding the line of scrimmage and not letting Shady get his yards? You have to throw the ball and get more points. Against the Bears, out of his 16 carries, only 2 went for big yardage–33 and 18 yards. The other 16 carries went for 20 yards total. The Cards started putting 8 men in the box after he ripped off that 29 yard run and he wasn’t getting much of anything.

3. The Eagles have to come up with more than the stretch play. Teams are catching on to it now, and when McCoy tries to cut back, he’s got a safety or a LB waiting on him.

The most disasterous decision that Reid made this year was making Castillo the DC. I don’t know if it was because of the lockout, or because he thought there was no one out there–although it was reported he approached Rob Ryan–or he just ran out of patience waiting for one of the SB teams’ coaches to come loose. If he hires a capable DC, this team is 9-0 at least.

But if you think Lurie is going to spend at least 50M–what it would take to pay off Reid’s last two years, plus all of his assitant coaches, plus pay for another whole coaching staff–well, I think we’re all whistling Dixie–ain’t going to happen.

bobbyuk
bobbyuk
November 19, 2011 6:49 am

Whoops–should have been “last 14 carries against the Bears”. One more thing–if you’re wondering why he just didn’t want to hire Jauron as DC, it was probably because as a senior assistant and secondary coach, he was partially responsible for the 31 TD passes they gave up last year.

bobbyuk
bobbyuk
November 19, 2011 6:54 am

BigE, why should he take off his SB ring? He earned it. And who can deny that he has molded QBs–every QB except 1 that’s played for him with the Eagles played well in the system–McNabb, Feeley, Detmer at times, Garcia, Kolb at times, and Vick. The only QB that got a lot of starting reps that didn’t do well, was the guy from the Lions they signed to be a backup in ’05.

drummer – thanks for pointing that out. I disagree with ‘blinded by allegiance though. It’s important to remember that I never ever said that I support or agree with everything the team does and/or says. That’s something that has been inferred by many of you and passed around as an accepted truth – but it’s not correct.

It’s also VERY important to remember that opinions are subjective, and just because you and maybe many around you agree with something, that doesn’t make it correct or eliminate the possibility that others may have some differing opinions.

Schiller doing his best to state that he won’t commit one way or another about anything.. A Fan and probably a person who is afraid to take a definitive stand about anything.. He’s the type of Fan (and probably in personal life) that will let life play itself out and then tell you what was good or bad about it..
I like Schiller but his non-committal stance about everything is annoying.and displays a weakness about saying what you really think and feel and then having to move on dealing with the consequences whether good or bad… He cracks me up and must love living that boring and “safe” life… Just my 2 cents ..

Paul, thanks for the analysis. Ha. So you’re wrong about extrapolating your sense of my fandom to everything about me in life. I’m quite decisive when it comes to my political stance, my opinions of people in my life, ethics and many other things. I’m an opinionated person. But when it comes to the Eagles and Reid – it is true that I am more of a ‘wait and see’ type of person. Football is unpredictable and fans don’t control it at all. So for me, Reid is the coach and he will be until we hear that he is not. (same goes for all other team employees and players – duh). So I personally don’t see the point in hating or blindly loving – either. I’m an accepting kind of guy. I agree Reid has faults and I’ve said it all along – he coddles players’ egos which really ruins things. Case in point – McNabb and Vick. But what I don’t do is feel the need to ‘vent’ – believe me, I get emotional about the Eagles – so high after a big win, so low after losses. But i vent in other ways than coming on here and expressing my opinions. I also am a fervent believer in the power of forgetting/denial. I put losses behind me. I’m ok that the Eagles probably won’t win the superbowl this year. I have a lot of life ahead of me and they have plenty of chances to do so. But I’m going to watch the games because I love the team, a lot of the players, and it’s fun, entertaining and interesting to me.

And as you know, I find the psychology, sociology and philosophy of sports and particularly Philly sports culture infinitely fascinating and that’s why I post and read the way I do on here.

I never said the Eagles would have great success this season, or that they would have a season like this. Vick is playing like crap, the defense has looked god awful.

So your argument here is – That my pointing out piss poor logic and cognitive distortions is proven incorrect because of the play of a football team? I made comments about yours (and others) comments. I never said Andy Reid will make this a great season.

I wasn’t wrong about Andy Reid – what did I say about him?

I’ve temporarily come out of blogging retirement on GCobb to just say a few points:

1.) I have said to FIRE REID after the SF and Bills lost, he is too stubborn to change his style of play in which every team in the league is hip to. Name me one coach who’s team is on the brink of being put out of the post season, and because of a missed or late meeting; sits their star receiver who changes the dynamic of the opponents defensive game plan. If Jason Garrett did that to miles austin, Jerry Jones would either fire him or scold him in the media. Also, would a team having that much star defensive power allow the coach to give the offensive line coach the D coordinator position knowing we have to put new pieces together in a shortened season? Of Course not, that is the most idiotic thing in all of sports that i’ve ever seen. FIRE REID and CASTILLO.

2.) Though we fans want and deserve a championship more than any other team in any other sport, our front office doesn’t deserve a superbowl. Reason being: these “tight wads” are a bunch of stiffs who love money more than the game of football. They are a bunch of corporate flea bags who care more about the bottom line and not what fans really think. I believe it disgusts Lurie, banner and company when our players are celebrating after a TD because they want some “good boy McNabb BS classy image crap;” screw that, we need some bad boys like Green Bay has. After a touchsown, they jump into the stands and get involved with their fans, and A Rogers does his QB thing as well; more than anything, they have fun and are financially taken care of. Also, our coach is a tight wad who doesn’t fit with the blue collar philly town and people. We want a coach who “blows his load with veins poppin everywhere” and tells it like it it is whether he wins or loses and about his players, not a guy who’s a shy punk; distant with the media and scared to fart in a new pair of jeans type of clown around here.

3.) A lot of NFL CEO’s have either played the game or loved it since they were kids and would do anything to bring a Superbowl home to their state or team that they own. Again, our front office guys are businessmen who don’t belong in the sport of football just like the owner of the redskins who really have no want of winning the ultimate prize. They’re only concerned with lining their pockets over a sustained period of time. This new GM is not a football guy, he’s a lawyer who spent most of his time studying law. His “fleabagism” is worse because he’s younger than lurie and Banner and should be more hip to what fans really want. Apparently, he’s one of them, and the bottom line is what counts.

4.) How do you not take care of your premiere playmaker who went to the Probowl at 2 different positions, help beat the Gmen and propel us into the playoffs, and who is the premiere player for us? Simple answer; bottom line. To get all of the asomghua jerseys sold and more koolaid made when we signed him., We also signed a boatload of other players and paid them as well, overspent for Vick who should have stayed on the franchise tag for the year to see how he progressed. But, bottom line in Vick jersey sales and eagle paraphanelia and more green koolaid drinking is the key to the F O success in keeping blinders on us fans. I was mad at DJax for his play thus far this season, but after stepping back from it all and looking at a clear picture, He was lied to by the front office in being taken care of (apparently not enough if they did make him an offer for his services), and having to play in this old wack WC offense. I ain’t mad at him period. If this corporate bottom line F.O. took care of him a year ago, none of this crap would prolly be happening. They don’t deserve a championship. The only ones hurting because of their ineptness is us true eagle fans who do deserve a SB.

5.) I could go on and on but as a life-long eagle fan I’m through with this team and their shanannagans. Furthermore, any real coach like Bill Cowher (who i would absolutely love to come and coach here) isn’t going to come and coach withe ownership over his back and quietly dictating how he will coach his team. Cowher wants full control over the operations and his players, and these tight-wad control freaks here wouldn’t dare give that to him. Could you guys imagine a “young lawyer punk” like Roseman telling BC how to run his ship? No, I didn’t think so either.

6.) This team needs a real regime change in order to be successful. Well, I said all that I had to say for a while after reading everyones comments daily. Take care guys. long live the Eagles. PEACE

Rocko, please tell me how winning a superbowl would not be the smartest financial move for any front office. You’re totally entitled to your opinions, obviously. Rocco.

Lots to say here, but your analysis of the ownership group being cheap is incorrect.

1) Jersey and memorabelia sales are irrelevant. All revenue is shared among the entire NFL. Teams even share gameday revenue.

2) Eagles have been in top 5 in salaries paid (not salary cap) for the entire Lurie ownership regime. He pays his players. Not cheap.

3) Under the Lurie ownership the team has been consistently competitive, has moved to a brand new stadium, and has a new practice facility. You must remember that through the 1980s and 1990s the team was a complete joke, with rats running around in the dungeons of the Vet. It was almost impossible for the Team to keep players or sign FAs. NFL players were universally did not want to play on the vet turf.

So look, there is a lot to complain about here, and the team needs a lot of work. Bit I don’t think you can lay it on the ownership being “cheap” or only interested in the “corporate bottom”

vinnietheevictor

It is in Lurie’s interest for the league to remain popular and for the league to sell NFL jerseys. The only thing selling Vick jerseys does is give the Eagles some name/brand recognition….doesn’t put $1 more into his coffers.

Lurie might want Vick jerseys sold for ego’s sake “look how popular my team is!”, but as far as the bottom line is, he could care less whether the name on the back says Tebow, VIck, or Pontbriand.

Of course the City put # into the city. Lurie was able to take advantage of a political climate (across America) that was very open to putting public dollars into stadiums…more power to Lurie for getting that done. Much like getting lots of corporate $$ to build the Novacare complex.

That being said, he still put up a lot of his own capital for both projects. Do you think that would have come from Braman. We’d still be in the Vet.

Again, there are lots of problems with this team, but as far as ownership is concerned, You’re barking up the wrong tree. I think the Eagles’ ownership group is top 5 in the league.

The problem is not Owner Jeff Lurie or even the money man Joe Banner.. The biggest problem this Franchise Faces is the lack of a having a real Football GM.. Look at the consistently good teams in the NFL, they all have GM’s who are knowledgeable about the Football and know how to evaluate Talent
(Colts GM BillPoliam, Packers ex-GM Ron Wolf, Ravens GM Newsome, Giants GM J Reese, Chargers GM A Smith, the Steelers GM/Front Office group are all Football people now when you look at the Patriots, Their HC Bellichek acts as their GM, but look at teams that have gone without a real football person in place at the GM level and how have they done..
The Cowboys have Owner Jerry Jones making personnel decsions,
The Redskins had whoever was Coaching at the time untuil finally hiring GM Bruce Allen last year, the Bronocs hired John Elway as their GM.. The Eagles had Coach AR making the personnel decisions and then with his family issues decidedto take those duties off his plate (which was a good thing in my opinion) , but they didn’t improve it my since they handed it over to GM Roseman who in his last 2 Drafts with a ton of picks has not drafted well in my opinion and missed a golden opportunity to fortify this team with good talent at importatnt postions for the next 4-5 years and failed to do so and then had to rely on bringing in a bunch of Free-Agents which has been a disaster for a lot of reasons, bottom line, this Eagle collapse is not all on Coach AR, a lot of the blame has to lalso lay at the feet with GM Roseman
in ROster managments, Draft Selection, Re-Singing key players and tageted key Free-agents who best fit for the team at positions of need…

Agree Paulman. This is not an ownership issue persay. Its a football issue.

Whether its Reid or Rosmman (I have no idea of inner working of Eagles’ heirarchy – nor do any of us). They have made terrible miscues vis a vis Quarterback, LB, Safety, and DL (I think they’re doing well on the Oline, RB and decently on the WR/TE front)

lurie is motivated to win a super bowl but he got into this ownership thing to make money, and he surrounded himself with like thinking people, at least most recently, Howie roseman never had any significant involvement with football other than from a fiscal position, he begged to get a foot in the door, and his draft picks speak of his football acumen, same with banner, and Reid would have been what he is now without Johnson, and I must admit mcnabb, see schiller I can admit when I am wrong, but rockos underlying sentiment resonates with most of us, that these fleabags carpet baggers , lurie banner, roseman, and their arrogant, idiotic head coach, screw them, they are not and never will be philadelphians
