Eagles Sink To A New Low: But Andy Reid’s Job Remains Secure

This may sound like a broken record, but Andy Reid didn’t have the greatest night coaching against the lowly Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. The play calling was as head scratching as ever, the time management was horrid, and the dumb penalties continue to mount. Sure, the players on the field are making the stupid plays and turning the ball over, but it’s the head coach who’s putting them in the position to make these mistakes.

One thing no one can disagree with about Andy Reid is the fact that he must do a better job. At this stage of the game, it’s obvious that’s not going to happen. This team, and in particular Desean Jackson, has quit on him. There’s no coming back from a 4-8 record for a team that was all-in for its first Super Bowl title this year.

“Listen man, we’re busting our tails, every day in practice to try and win a game,” Reid said. “It’s my responsibility to make sure that we try and win football games. We have a group of good guys. I can’t complain a bit about the effort or the work ethic that they put forth. I have to get them in a position to make plays.”

So what exactly happened last night to result in a 31-14 beat down by a team that doesn’t have a tenth of the talent of the Eagles? Let’s start with the play calling. The Eagles came out on their opening drive and, (surprise!) threw the ball. The NFL Network showed at stat that the Eagles have now thrown the ball on their first offensive play in eleven straight games. That’s going to keep defenses on their toes. Anyway, Vince Young dropped back, and threw it to a wide open man.

Unfortunately, that wide open man was Seattle defensive back Kam Chancellor. So after limiting the Seahawks to a 3 and out on their first drive, the Birds offense gave the ball right back to them. I’m sure that made Jim Washburn happy. Five plays later, Marshawn Lynch broke his way to a 15 yard touchdown run that showed just how heartless this defense has become.

With Lynch dead to rights at the line of scrimmage, the Eagles defense stopped tackling, and the Seattle running back ended up walking into the end zone for a lead the Seahawks would not relinquish. The rest of the first half was more of the same for the Eagles offense as LeSean McCoy touched the ball only six times. Anyone who’s followed the Eagles over the last 13 seasons knows Andy Reid hates running the ball. But it’s absolutely baffling that they continue to underutilize a guy who was being compared to Barry Sanders during the game.

They finally decided to run the ball in the second half, but putting together a 17 play drive when you’re down 17 points is really counterproductive. Why not try to sustain a drive like that in the first half? Run the ball a little bit and control the clock so you can dictate the flow of the game. Andy Reid continues to act like he’s smarter than everyone else. His stubborn attitude has cost the team several games this year, and last night was a perfect example of how he “needs to do a better job.”

If the play calling was bad, the time management was putrid. At the end of the first half, the Seahawks drove down to the Eagles 32 yard line. The Birds still had a timeout left, but Andy decided to let the clock run down to 16 seconds. Seattle then called a timeout, and proceeded to kick a field goal. With little time left on the clock, the Eagles actually ended up with the ball on their own 40 when the Seattle kicker booted the ensuing kickoff out of bounds.

Those extra 35 seconds or so that Andy decided not to save may have cost the Eagles at least a field goal at the end of the half. After the game, the coach didn’t really answer why he was against calling timeout in that situation, but once again he made the wrong decision and it ultimately cost his team. In the second half, the Eagles were forced to burn two of their timeouts when there was still close to eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. One of those timeouts was necessary when the Eagles had 12 men on the field prior to a Seattle punt.

At this point in the season, mishaps like that are absolutely unforgiveable. Granted, Vince Young the interception machine made it so not having those timeouts didn’t matter, but if the Eagles were in a position late in the game to tie it up, they would have once again been rushing to get plays off while battling the clock. At this point in the season, mistakes like this shouldn’t be happening. The fact that they are is a reflection a coaching staff that isn’t getting the job done. Eagles’ fans deserve better than this.

From the tone of this article, anyone can guess I’m ready for a coaching staff overhaul. It’s long overdue. However, it doesn’t look like the Eagles front office is ready to make such a move. Derrick Gunn reported last night that he spoke with an Eagles executive and asked him if Andy Reid was going to continue to be the coach of this team. The executive replied that “Andy Reid is a good football coach. Andy Reid is our football coach.” That doesn’t sound like someone who’s about to get fired.

The only way Jeff Lurie is going to pull the trigger here is if the Eagles fans make a statement. The Jets come to town two weeks from Sunday. Maybe a mass boycott from that game will be the proof this front office needs that a change is not only needed, but necessary. It’s time, Eagles fans. Show this organization that you won’t put up with the same crap anymore. Make a statement on December 18th. Stay home. Decorate the tree. Focus on fantasy football playoffs. Do anything but drive to Lincoln Financial Field. It’s the only way this franchise will make a change. Philadelphia fans get a bad rep around the country, but one thing that can’t be taken away from them is their loyalty to their teams. By not showing up on the 18th, a statement will be made. Let’s make it happen.

This is the last season for Reid! I’m not in the FO but this team has not won a playoff game in three seasons now! The team did not spend all this money for a 4-8 season! The Eagles would never say that Reid’s job is on the line. That’s not the way they do things. At the end of the season Reid will announce that he has decided to step down! They will say they are just parting ways! Just my opinion!

BOGUS!! BOGUS!!

this simply is not true and THIS is the reason he should be gone.

your going to tell me that Desean is playing for the team? that young was not playing to show a new team what he can do? That Juan was not playing to save his job? that Asam wasnt playing to show the pats they were wrong? (last week)

“There’s going to be a lot of anger. I’m sure right now there’s a lot of people out there ticked off, and they should be,” Jenkins said. “We’re going out there and we’re just giving away.”

“There’s got to be something in there that you have inside to keep you going right now and this is that time,”

Did the Eagles have that pride in them Thursday?

“No. We didn’t. We came out here, we got it handed to us. There’s no excuses at all, there’s nothing we can make up for it. It’s the 12th game of the season, there’s no excuses for it anymore for it to keep happening game in, game out.”

“You play this game because you love it, you play the game because you accept the challenge, you play the game for a lot of different things, and right now we just ain’t manning up.”

“I could just imagine from a fan’s stand point what it looks like watching the games,” Jenkins said. “It probably looks like lack of effort, lack of fundamentals, lack of everything.”

“We try to plead our case but fans ain’t trying to hear that. Fans want to see it, they want to see it out there on the field, they don’t want to hear about it after a loss,” he said. “I bet they are getting tired of hearing us after, it’s been eight losses now.”

“It’s awful. When it comes down to it, it’s awful and we’re not giving our fans anything right now.”

THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO HEAR!! HONESTY. for me…. this has been the strongest leader on this team this year. A NEW GUY!!!!!

Stevo, good point..this team is going to need major overhaul esp on defense but atleast Jenkins is a guy you bring back…Its funny how he is the one that gets it the most and he is the one with a ring..if anyone on defense was going to just give up and not care it would be him since he already has accomplished everything he wanted in his career but hes not. These other guys have accomplished nothing in the league and plays like they don’t care which makes them worst.

This defense is just so bad…the coaching is really bad obviously but the players are just flat out terrible. Their not starters and some are not even reliable backups…The thing that sucks the most is your going to have to bring some of these guys back.

Yea were going to have a great draft pick this year most likely top 10 but damn i dont think im going to be able to watch them declare the pick just cause of how they could just screw that up too

OK, big problems here…Where to start?

We need new head coach & defensive co-ordinator…But Lurie, Banner et al know little about football, except that it allows them to ‘print’ money.

What did Lurie do when he took over and needed a man to run football show?…He made some contacts with Green Bay organization, and so we got Andy Reid…Reid did a good job, got good assistants, McNabb and had Jim Johnson to pull his nuts out of the fire…But, certainly, Reid’s time has been over for awhile.

Lurie/Banner need to network, perhaps go to Green Bay again, other places, too and get a fired up young assistant who can fill the job…Spagnola out there, may be available, but for sure there are others…Maybe pay a consultant, a FOOTBALL MAN, to help with the search…But, they will need very good advice…Lurie not dumb, just doesn’t know, or have much interest in football…Pay a headhunter who will help find the best man.

Eagles still valued at $1.1 billion…But this could drop if current trend continues…Operating revenue has peaked out currently, and this should make Lurie think.

Last night’s game a disgrace…Defense is the worst I’ve seen for Eagles in over a decade…They can’t cover, can’t tackle, can’t plan, can’t adjust.

DeShaun Jackson being scapegoated: Lurie could easily have given him a couple million under the table that could be deducted from future contract…Eagles spend millions on free agents, low ball a player who has been the team’s sparkplug the last couple of years…Veterans on team take notice of this.

They give Vick millions, but what has Vick won?…One playoff game?…They have QB problem too, because Vick will become an albatross.

But, first things first: New head coach, new defensive co-ordinator…Then, let them reshape the team…The Eagles do have quite a bit of talent, but it needs to be properly used.

atra1781
December 2, 2011 2:29 pm

The whole regime is flawed.

Vick is decent but injury probe.

Nmadi isn’t used correctly and cant tackle.

Our defensive Coordinator has no experience!!

Bad decisions by the whole front office and Reid has had 12 years to win a ring.

Bring in a new philosophy and someone who can draft for a change.

Its one thing to miss on a late first rounder but missing in the top 10 is a different story…Esp by the way this team is playing now and with them prolly starting Kafka in the last 2-3 games to get some time this team could maybe have a top 5 pick. Scary to think what they would do with that pick with the way they have been drafting the past 2 years. At least the big money won’t be a factor with the new CBA like it was in the past but damn you can’t screw that pick up.

3 Players who I said to look out for had a lot to do with the Seahawkls spanking the EAgles

#1) Safety Eric Thomas outplayed N Allen,& K Coleman big time
#2) DE Clemmons outplayed Tapp, Parker,Cole
#3) LB KJ Wright outplayed all of the Eagles LB’s …
#4) QB T Jackson outplayed Eagles VY

Has there been 1 game outside the Cowboy game where any Eagle QB has outplayed the Opponents QB… I didn’t think so adn this Eagle Offense is QB Freindly and setting yardage and scorring points left and right… Really…
Take L McCoy’s great perfomance this Season out of equation and this Eagle Offense plain just sucks in almost every category..

Here’s the Problems in replacing Mudd & Washburn

#1) They are both signed thru 2012 and very big Salaries which will be hard from them to walk away from.. (Also I don’t see Lurie or Cacoh AR firing them and them still getting paid not to coach)

#2) and maybe a bigger issue, If they both were to get fired or resign and Coach ARremains, who would want to coach a sinking ship trying to install new schemes and systems as you stated and have to go thru an entire new install system again and exspecially since those hired know that Coach Ar may be terminated after a poor 2012 Season.. Coaches typically are not going to join staffs with a HC on shaky gorund or entering his final season under contract for the fear of being out of job the following Season

I think Coach AR, Mudd, Washburn and QB Vick are all tied at the hip and will all return for 2012 and if another poor season follow’s then they all will be gone and it clearly will be to start anew with a completely new Staff and Direction… I do thinkn Juan Castillo at the minimum will be demoted, I think Secondary Coach J Lynne will be terminated and I think Coach MM will leave on his own to pursue other opportunites (and quite possilby at Penn State)

The Heat is definitely on for Caoch AR and he will not want to go into the 2012 and having new OL/DL Coaches with new systems in place..

Coach AR would not name J Castillo as DC until he had Mudd signed sealed and delivered even though he had already decided on Castillo as his DC
And again I go back to Lurie and his “Loyalty” factor.. He is more old school where a contract is honored and completed .. He is not from the same cloth as Daniel Snyder who probably is still paying Salaries for HC Steve Spurrier, Joe Gibbs, Jim Zorn and the Shanahans.. Lurie is not going to pay someone for not wroking.. It goes for everything he stands for..

There was talk on the radio about how Urban Meyer could of been a replacement..that would of put some new life into the fan base.. since he is taken now maybe Bob Stoops or Les Miles would work if Reid is let go…

Something is going to have to happen at the end of the year. Bringing back Reid would be hard enough for the FO since prolly well over 75% of the fans want him gone after last nights pathetic game…There is no way Castillo is anywhere near the defense next year…the FO might not be able to bring back MM either since the fans here are just over his BS play calling game after game

clearly Jake came in from speaking with the ladies as now he sounds like a drama queen – less is more – they suck this year – not much else to add unless you WANT to have the whole discussion of why Reid was the most successful coach in Eagles history, and how do you over rate a guy if you say EXACTLY what the Eagles have accomplished with him at the helm – its simple – 6 division titles, 5 NFCC games, 1 conference championship, 9 playoff appearances and 10 winning seasons – you CAN NOT over rate that because it is an extrememly small number of people that actually become pro coaches, last as pro coaches, succeed as pro coaches and win as pro coaches – DON’T be a drama queen – BSM videos said it best – even Belicheck had a rough go in Cleveland – he moved on and found a better fit…… as for the most dysfunctional team – try this – grab your ears, pull down until you here a loud pop – now that your head is out of your ass, read a newspaper – there are several teams more dysfunctional (the Redskins or the Colts for example) – this is not politics – there is no need to trash the guy’s legacy for what he has done for the team – you want to trash a guy for having assloads of talent on the team – go trash Buddy Ryan – he completely ignored the offense (even with Cunningham, Byars, K Jackson) and had one of the greatest Ds in history – and he couldn’t win one freaking playoff game – but he beat up on the lowly (at the time) Cowboys and talked trash so everyone goes – ooh Buddy – or I guess we just do the GCOBB shuffle and change the standards –

Pheags – didn’t meyer just sign with a major college program? Telling you – Paul Johnson from Georgia Tech would be a great fit – Brady Hoke at Michigan – Pman is right in that I don’t think a big name pro guy is going to want to jump on this job – but a hot running college coach who thinks he can take the next step could do wonders

Navy, Yea Meyer got picked up but I would of liked to see it. If Im the FO im going after Les Miles. I mean after this year what else does that guy have left to accomplish in college football..I don’t know too much about the guys you mentioned other than just seeing their teams play on TV here and there but I would be all for a younger hungry college coach out to prove something….Trotter made a good point on his show the other night. He said it would be much better to have a young guy come in with everything to lose than a Gruden, Dungy, Cowher type since those guys already won and might not mind if they don’t get the job done here.

If the Eagles play more lifeless football in their last 4 games it won’t matter how much money Reid has made the FO, he will have to be let go plain and simple or Reid will prolly just step down himself. I think there is a good chance he steps down anyway. You can’t even say that its just a bad year…Reid bad decision of making Castillo the D cord will go into next year and the year after atleast since there will prolly be a new guy and new system for the players to learn. I would go after Spags as a D cord since the transition wouldnt be that bad but either way this team is a mess right now.

A real Dark Horse candidate could be Herman Edwards
#1) Has played in Philly and knows how the local media & fans work and thier high expectations
#2) Has a Denfensive Background who specialty is the Secondary which is really the key to having a shut down Defense..
#3) Also has the big itch to get back on the sidelines even though he has done well for himself with the ESPN shows
#4) Knows the NFC East brand of Football, Physical, smash mouth, good Special Teams, etc, etc…
#5) Is experienced enough to command respect all the way around, but is still “hip” enough to relate to the Younger players,Media and Fans
#6) Does not have a big ego, is smart enough to realize that few tweaks here and there and sure up a couple of Defensive Positions that the EAgles are a talented team that could get back to playoff form quickly (next Season)
#7) Has a good Relationship with QB M Vick (do not underestimate this)
#8) Also has a good rapport with Mudd/Washburn and could keep them around so as not to bring in an entire new Staff and Systems, etc,etc..

I think in order to keep some type of rhythm and cohesion to this team, that Hiring Herm Edwards would be a fantastic move for the near term..By Hiring a young coach from the College Rankds or Coordinator Level, you are basically talking about a re-building job where you will change entire Coacing Staffs,Schemes and Players and look for a 2-3 Turn-around time, I don’t think JEff Laurie is ready to concede that this is waht is necessary.. He could Hire Edwards and keep a lot of the same staff and let Edwards concerntrate on the Defensive Side of the ball

Well he’ll try. Guy is .420 as a head coach with 2 teams with 2 winning years in 9 seasons. Give us a break Paul.

And where does this “has a good relationship/rapport with _________” come from? Herm was a scout for KC for one year while Mudd was there. They may have never even talked. He’s never been on a team with Washburn. He’s never coached with Vick.

I would take Herm Edwards over Coach AR any day Vinnie and especially as I stated for the SHort-term (2-3 Year window), If Fans want to blow up the Team and Coaching Staff I am ok with that too, but just expect 2-3 Seasons of 4-5 Win Seasons before they become a legitimate Super Bowl/Deep Playoff contendor again which again, I am ok with.. but if they want to bring in a Coach with experience, passion and the sense of urugency to win with most of the core players remaining intact, then Edwards would be a good choice .. Edwards would probably hire his good friends Gunther Cunningham to be the Def/Coordnator but would need some help on the Offfensive Side of the ball as far as a Coordinator..
A couple of young Coaches Names for Offensive Coordintors are
David Shula – QB Coach for Carolina Panthers and has worked well with Cam Newton
Jon Gruden’s brother in CIncincati who has done wonders with QB andrew Daltonan d their young WR’s..

Songs – have you LOST YOUR MIND – the vickings are 2 and 10 and rang up 32 points on Denver – Dawkins had 4 tackles and 1 count them 1 pass defensed – he did have a big sack – his season has toatally sucked – but leave it to songs and his little ball sucker Jake to find Dawkins 1 play of the season well lets be fair – he has 2 sacks this year (and 4 in the last 3) ZERO picks, he had 1 lastyear – ZERO forced fumbles and a grand total of 11 Passes defended in the last two year – stop trying to recapture 2004 – it just aint happening

Ponder from minnestota completed 60% of his passes for over 380 and the broncos needed a miracle finish from the O scoring 14 points (the legend of Tebow grows) in the last 8 minutes –

Jake – get the penis out of your mouth and stop mumbling – it looks bad – – keep it up, you are going to get stepped on – and YES you will hear from me today – congratulate me all! My daughter and her high school team won the California State Volleyball championship yesturday – I didn’t do much – drove, watched, drove home – but I think they will finish up the year # 35 or so in the Country – most importantly – the coach from Bucknell was very interested in talking with her post match – Jake – Bucknell is a college –

Songs – I am saying this so your simple little brain can understand it – I DO NOT WANT DAWKINS – I would rather put Jarret out there, get off of Dawkins jock – Nate Allen had a promisiig start as a rookie 2nd rounder and since his knee injury has not looked good – but let me ask you this songs – who on the eagles D – player, coach, has looked good – my answer is outside of 3 games (st Louis, dallas and NYG) NO ONE – the entire group looks like shit –

can I be any clearer? Is there anything else that troubles you today – I DO NOT WANT DAWKINS BACK _ HIS TIME IS WAY PASSED – let Denver have him –

really – lets start a conversation about how much better the eagles would have been had they drafted Tim Tebow – Songs – who would YOU rather have Tebow or Vick?
