DeSean Jackson Finally Gets His Deal, $51 Million Over 5-Years

Finally, DeSean Jackson got the long term deal he’s been looking for three-years.  The Eagles gave him a five year deal worth about $51 million dollars and $18 million dollars of it is guaranteed.  It’s got to be a major relief for Jackson, which will hopefully help him turn in a big year in 2012.

He had been designated as the team’s franchise player earlier this month, so the long-term deal will clear some of the salary cap for the Birds.

“We are thrilled to be able to keep one of the NFL’s top playmakers in Philadelphia,” said Eagles head coach Andy Reid. “DeSean is a game breaker, he has the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, and he has proven himself to be a big threat for our offense. Signing our own players was a big priority for us this offseason and DeSean was certainly high on our list. We are very excited about his future as an Eagle.”

Jackson has been one of the most explosive players in the NFL since he came into the league as a rookie.  He has contributed 229 receptions for 4,085 yards and 21 touchdowns during his four-years in Philadelphia.  Add to that three rushing scores and a team record four punt return touchdowns.

Jackson has been a Pro Bowler two times, following the 2009 and 2010 seasons. In fact, he became the first player in league history to garner a Pro Bowl selection at two different positions in the same season (2009 – wide receiver, punt returner).

Number five is one of five players in NFL history to post 900-or-more yards in each of his four campaigns and has the most receiving yards ever by any Eagle after his first four seasons in Philadelphia.

The bottomline is that little DeSean earned his money.

Excellent! But then again this only makes sense. Thank goodness the FO didn’t listen to the idiots that called him a “punk” and said he’d be gone. Hopefully now DJax feels appreciated and returns to his old form. I like the moves being made by the Eagles FO so far. Take care of your key play makers first and then go after the FA you want second. Now hopefully they’ll go after Plax or a Plax-like WR (are there any left?) to complete the receiving corp. Good job Eagles!

Here’s the review from Walterfootball:

Eagles re-sign WR DeSean Jackson (5 years, $51 million): C Grade
I’m not a fan of this. DeSean Jackson is a bad teammate. He drops passes, has lapses in concentration and is scared to go over the middle of the field. Ever since taking a nasty hit against the Texans in December 2010, he’s only put together three 100-yard performances. He’s turned into a one-trick pony, and it’s only a matter of time before opposing defensive coordinators discover this (I’m shocked they haven’t already), but he will continue to serve as a deep-threat decoy in the meantime. The Eagles should have traded him.

I tend to agree. Whatever.

LOL Looks like all the internet GMs are wrong again. Why in the world would the Eagles get rid of this play making machine? Look for Maclin to be moved after this year. Hes the one with 0 pro bowls, 0 1000 yard seasons and quite frankly does nothing particuarly well.

As for those that called him a “punk” (which he is). You’re always a fan of what players say Lionsden….well listen to Trent Cole upon signing his contract ….and yes he’s clearly talking about Mesean….

“Yes, I think with [T] Todd [Herremans] and me, we conducted our business professionally and the way it’s supposed to be conducted. We never went out to the media and complained. We just did what we had to do to keep moving and caused no problems with the team and this atmosphere. We worked things out and continued to play.”

And on how to go about conducting business…and if Eagles’ are cheap and disrespect players (like so many contend on here regularily)

“They (the team) have to do what they have to do. They have to conduct business and run the team here. They had to do what they had to make the team successful. My time has come, and I knew my time was going to come. It’s just that I had to play my role and hopefully everything would work out.”

Don’t think he’s the biggest fan of mesean…..

This was a great signing,I was ticked that the Eagles did not resign Desean last season, thankfully, both sides came to their senses and agreed on a deal. To all the DJax haters LOL hate on haters # 10 is here to stay!!!
TheEagles are doing a good job in free agency by resigning the studs that make this team move. Good free agency so far!!!

Vinnie do you actually believe that DJax couldnt run 10 yards and turn around and catch 80 balls a year? Are you kidding me? Who in the hell could cover him in space if they would actually use DJax in that role? He goes deep 70% of the time because he is asked to go deep to open up the field for others. I personally would use him diferently.

That’s fine Vinnie, but those guys have earned millions thus far and Desean has only earned scraps as far as the NFL financial world is concerned. Wide receivers are totally different mindset players . He had clearly outperformed his contract two years ago and should’ve been compensated. I like Trent but he needs to concentrate on not wearing down when November hits. It’s all water under the bridge now though. He’s here, like it or not, love him or not. He’s ours.!!!

Like the move, Like I stated there was no wway the Eagles would just let a young player just walk free without anything in return…And i was all for keeping him as well since I knew the WR market would not be as good as some thought…

So basically the Eagles gave him 5 million more than what the tag was giving to lock him up for 5 years instead of one…this contract is Eagle team friendly so I’m all for it…I mean Calvin Johnson only got like 50 million more guaranteed so ill def take it

Eagleshavelanded im not hating at all I just think its a coincidence that this signing happened now after all the top free agent Wide Receiver are off the market. Its nothing new. NFL teams do it all the time. Adam Schifter reported that Desean was on the block a week ago so now V jax, Bowe, Colston, Wayne, Garcon are all signed they throw some money at him to him happy. Almost like how the Jets did with Mark Sanchez.

Eaglehaslanded

The Eagles do not use their receivers like that. That’s why they call it spreading the ball around. When was the last time any Eagles receiver snatched 90-100 balls. How many receivers in the league snatch that many balls. Not even megatron or larry fitz.As far as the red zone, it doesn’t help that the QB is small too.

Jott…its not a 50 million dollar contract at all…its only 15 million guaranteed…thats it. and they can get out after 2 years if they want if the guy acts up or plays like ass..this contract was actually pretty good when you think about it.

Jott theres always Plaxico. I personally thought Randy Moss would have been a better fit but the niners didnt waste anytime locking him up. Would the Eagles consider drafting Michael Floyd? I personally would stay away from ANY Notre Dame player but it would be interesting.

EaglesSuck, seriously, there was no way the Eagles was going to give VJax the type of money the bucs gave him. VJ is one screwup away from being suspended for a year due to his off the field issues. Dwayne Bowe alligatored armed balls this past year. One play he didn’t even go for the ball because he saw the db coming. Not all receivers that are big and fast can come into this system and develop chemistry necessary to be that guy. DJ is a unique talent that fits this offense. M.Colston was never leaving N.O, especially with Drew Brees as his qb. Appreciate the great talent we have and lets move on.

pheags88

March 14, 2012 9:21 pm

The only way Djax actually sees 50 million in this deal is if he is averaging about 12 TDS and something like 1300 yards a year until he is 30. Lets be real thats prolly not going to happen. If it actually did well it would be beneficial to the Eagles as well so who cares then. So again don’t just pay attention to that big number at the end of these deals.

The problem is teams have caught on two a lot of the eagles tendencies in the red zone. The eagles use to be a good red zone team, but the last three years or so it has been a struggle. They have riley cooper who is 6’4″ and they don’t use him at all. They have to switch up the play calling and use the talent they have better.

Great News ! A player of his caliber only comes around once in a while (Lightning speed with good hands). I would’ve hated to see him in another uniform playing against us. I really don’t understand all the controversy. With his resume the decision about resigning him should have been a slam dunk! The Desean haters really aren’t Eagle fans.(or they don’t know much about football.) They’re the same guys who were trying to trying to promote Kolb and trade M Vick. Imagine how that would have worked out!

Eaglehaslanded, FYI,
2011- Calvin Johnson stats- 96 rec, 1,681 yds, 16 tds.
2011- Larry Fitzgerald stats- 80 rec, 1,411 yds, 8 tds. *With shitty QB’s*
So you’re wrong with your comments of ” How many receivers in the league snatch that many balls. Not even megatron or larry fitz.” (In regards to 90-100 catches). Let’s be honest & real here, he was signed, because all other options were gone. Just saying. I’m ok with it, but truth be told, he is NOT, nor will NEVER be a #1 WR, nor in either of the classes of Megatron & Fitz. If anybody thinks so, they are delusional & foolish.

I already sent my congrats to D-Jax and his family for a great contract, now let’s play ball… I am a fan of the “Eagles Team”.. Let’s hope all the Eagles who had their deals extended with nice contracts perform at a high level so the Team can win a Championship (or at least have a chance by getting into the playoffs which is all I really care about).. If D-Jax works hard and stays focused and committed then it’s a great deal and I hope he’s ready to take that next step as the other high-profile players on the team do..

Its about time the eagles took care of this young man. This Franchise does not handle prime time wide outs like Desean. He was grossly underpaid and , if they would have taken care of the situation before the season, then everything would;ve been fine. Some people are quoting Trent Cole’s comments about how he and another player handled their situation. Good for them. But they were not grossly underpaid at a position where a player is at constant risk. They asked him to return punts also-a high risk assignment, so much so that the league changed the rules on kickoffs last year. The way Desean handled himself was simply a business tactic. Does it work? Yes and no. Perhaps the running back from Tennessee handled it best by not showing up unitl he was paid. These guys risk themselves everyweek, especially QB’s and Wideouts, I think Desean simply conducted his personal business for good or bad as a young man, and now, finally, he is getting paid.

This guy has done nothing to improve himself. And his stats bare it out.

Kevin Love came into the NBA and has made himself better. Leaner.

Michael Jordan put on muscle after Detroit push him around in the playoffs.

Jerry Rice and Walter Payton had workout regimes that none of their teammates could do. All to get better.

This guy can’t go over the middle because he is the size of a high school player.

Why do the Eagles keep putting skinny guys like Pinkston and Desean on the field.

Until all the guys who underperform their big contracts, give the money back(McDougle, etc) The funny notion that “he earned it” is ridiculous.

You are where your at in life because of your actions and reactions. His orginal contract was what it was, because of his own behavior dating back to HS. The entire 1st round of NFL Teams passed on him.

A store owner shot A 24 year old young man to death in the back in Detroit a few days ago. Over the price of a condom. The young man had argued over not getting the proper change and knocked over some items and was walking out. The Owner felt disrespected and came from behind his bullet proof glass and shot the man. One is dead and the other is facing life in prison. Over some change and a condom.

A jack-up attitude can cost you a big contract in the NFL and even get you killed.

Desean has a jack-up attitude. I hope the big contract solves this as it relates to being a football player willing to get bigger and stronger, that is not looking for a soft place to fall, and dropping TD passes or dropping the ball before he crosses the goal line.

And for Heaven’s sake, stop running backwards on every punt return.

DCAR thanks for the fact check, is Desean in that class of receiver ?No. Idon;t think he’d even claim that, then again perhaps I’m wrong on that too, but I think we expect a receiver of his talent to do everything, not the case.He is who he is and I appreciate him for what he brings to the tyable. I don’t see megatron or fitz bringing back punts. The lions and cards do not have to many offensive weapons, so of course their main weapons are going to put up hella #’s. Just sayin!!!
