Eagles Fire Juan Castillo And Promote Todd Bowles To Defensive Coordinator

The Eagles head coach Andy Reid has fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and named Todd Bowles the new defensive coordinator going forward.  This isn’t a shock to me because Reid had to do something dramatic with his football team in a free fall.

“I want to make it clear that I have nothing but the ultimate respect for Juan Castillo as a coach and as a person”, Reid said in a released statement. “He’s one of the finest football coaches that I have ever worked with. He has served this organization extremely well for 18 years and letting him go was a difficult decision. I know he will continue to be a successful coach in this league and wish he and his family nothing but the best.”

“We’re six games into the season and average isn’t good enough. I know the potential of our team and insist on maximizing it.”

The fact that defensive cornerback Nmandi Asomugha was questioning Castillo’s call in the fourth quarter and overtime was clear proof that a number of players were doubting Castillo’s ability to lead this defense.  He’s been overmatched from the outset, when Reid named him the defensive coordinator.

There have been whispers in and around the organization that Bowles would eventually take charge unless Castillo started doing a much better job.  Obviously that didn’t happen.

The offense is the 2nd worse in the league at scoring points. Why does Marty still have a job? The special teams stink, why is April still here? The offensive line stinks, why is Washburn still here?

At this point, I’m rooting for epic collapse to ensure that Big Red and the rest join Castillo at the end of the year.

Cause the defense is costing us games.Offense is scroing when we need too. i know we’re ranked low and everything. But come on bro…your just gonna can Marty,Bobby, and try and have a p-off run?

Erock, the offense is costing the team just as many games. That Steelers game shoulda been a win. When your D gives up 16 points, you should win with this “talented” offense. Marty is getting a pass again because of the crap offensive line even though his play calling and lack of a gameplan has been an issue for years.

And honestly what would you lose if you fired April. He doesn’t seem to be making them any better, so why should he get a pass?

All of these guys are to blame, its just that they needed an easy scapegoat here. Not defending Juan at all, but he is hardly the cause of all of the Eagles problems.

Needed to be done and no real surprise here which is exactly why Todd Bowles was hired in the 1st place last Off-Season.. Coach AR should have never named an overmatch, inexperienced Coach like Castillo as DC last Year.. It was just another display of arrogance, aloofness and down right foolishness for AR to think that Castillo could coach, game plan, improvise at th HIgh Level in the NFL with no real expereince on that side of the ball since his High School Days.. He was set up to fail, just like QB Vick is set up to fail to run this Offense.. Caoch AR, MM, Cullie,Mudd & Washburn will all be gone after 2012 and not a minute too soon..

Castillo should have been a LB’s Coach or maybe a Special Teams Coach and he would probably have success in these areas.. Wish him well..

yeah, I feel bad for Juan.. been coaching since Laurie bought the team. personally,a hell of a staff Ray Rhodes put together … Gruden a SB, Sean Petyon, a SB, Tragovac has been a DC, and may still be, Callaghan took his team to a SB, and Emmitt Thomas was just as good a DC as JJ ( bad timing for ET )

Of course you can’t fire all of them mid-season, but I blame the inept offense more than the defense. Castillo was over-matched and should have never been given the job, but his defense has played better than Washburn’s offensive line. I would have fired Washburn and moved Juan back to o-line coach.

Don’t get me wrong, they ALL need to go. Maybe I keep Bowles, or make him a candidate for the next head coach. I don’t want Andy, Marty, Mudd, Washburn or April anywhere near this team in 2013.

Only validates what I said all summer. The hiring of Juan was one of the worst
moves in philadelphia sports history and gave insight into the massive arrogance of Andrew Reid.

I applaud his decision to make a move now, rather than wait til the end of the season. But then again, he really has no choice, because in years past he
did not have to worry about getting fired. However, Jeffry Loser made it pretty clear he was on his last leg. That’s why Andy’s sorry agent tried to strike a deal using the death of Andy’s son as leverage. Scumbag agent. Worst than Ari Gold (emmanual).

Now maybe you can get Mike Vick’s contact lense perscription fixed so he can throw to the right team.

The guy turning the ball over week to week…has left the field in the 4th quarter with a lead 5 of 6 games this season….just saying! If you want to talk about real flaws, address the play calling and the O Line..best RB in the league had a 1yard per carry average on Sunday….guess that is the guy who is turning the ball over fault too!

mhenski
mhenski
October 16, 2012 11:03 am

you cant address the play calling because we have mentally challenged play callers been this way for 10+ years and they aint gonna change

cant address the O Line because all we have are bar bouncers on the team and O lineman dont grow on trees midseason

With that said all that can be changed is the qb who coughs it up every week and keeps embarrassing himself. We agree that the O Line is bad and if our qb was semi intelligent or a semi good qb he would get the ball out with the quickness but nope thats not what he does, matter of fact here is what he does do:

According to ESPN’s Ron Jaworski, Michael Vick is the only quarterback in the NFL who through five weeks is averaging over 3.0 seconds to receive the snap from center and get rid of the football.
According to a scouting service employed by Jaws, the average time of all quarterbacks to receive the snap and release is 2.59 seconds. Vick’s average time this season is 3.03. Holding onto the ball too long is a fixable error, and we wonder if the stats are skewed a bit by Vick’s 32 rushing attempts.

Our great QB knows he is playing behind one of the worst O Lines in football and he is holding the ball a half a second longer than the average and overall more than any other QB. Good indication of a bad QB that just doesnt get it.

Not to mention put in Foles or Edwards and its almost a guarantee they dont turn the ball over more than Vick. Vick just can’t throw that well and doesn’t read defenses to well and his speed isn’t quite there anymore.

I know Vick left the field in the 4th quarter with a lead a bunch of times this year but he also kept these teams around all game because of his turnovers, 3 and outs, sacks, inaccurate throws and so on. The 4th quarter is irrelevant its what you do in the whole game and Vick every week isn’t doing enough.

I just dont think you look at the whole picture Real.

Things could get ugly in Atlanta…They got a great secondary and great blitzing scheme and a front 4 that gets after the QB

7 sacks in six games with 2 pro-bowl type d-ends and the inability to get to the quarterback through blitzing spellled the end. MM should be gone too. Not being able to gameplan for the best RB in the game is a sin. Repeatedly calling end arounds against a wide nine alignment shows an inability to run an offense. The announcers were tearing up the calls during the game. Somebody should be accountable for the offensive play calling. If you are okay with letting vick take a pounding during the game what don’t you let hime take off at the end to run the clock out.

I dont look at the whole picture?

Well how about this, at least I know my teams schedule! The game against ATL is at home, not in Atl..

Also about you stats of Vick holding onto the ball…who’s fault is that…if he doesn’t have options…

From Philly.com

When Vick got the ball out quickly, he did well. He was 14-for-18 for 133 yards on throws that got out of his hand in two seconds or less. And one of those four incompletions was the third-quarter drop in the end zone by tight end Brent Celek. When he hung on to the ball for three seconds or more, he was just 2-for-9 for 32 yards with one interception.

So keep giving him more options and you won’t see him holding onto the ball that often….
Our great QB is holding the ball because that is what the play calls for…wait for the route to develop…do you not understand that? do you not understand that the Eagles are a deep play team?

If you put Foles or Edwards in behind the O Line, and continue to give them no options, and send them on 7 step drops, you really believe they won’t turn the ball over? really? seriously? hahaha come on now, you hatred for Vick is in full bloom on that statement!

Bugsy, I agree to some extent but if the offense put you ahead 10 points with 5 minutes to go the coordinator shouldn’t change the defense on the best reciever in the league.

And I keep hearing this 16 point argument concerning the Steelers game…Well if the team is leading by 2 points with 8 minutes to go it doesn’t matter what is the score……….a good defense don’t allow a struggling team like the steelers to methodically drive down the field while running out 8 minutes to kick the game winning field goal.

Now, back to Reid.

Reid should be fired for hiring Castillo in the first place, costing us last season into this struggling season.

Is giving a guy a shot worth the success of the whole team?

We fans were pointing out how outmatched Juan was yet apologist gave us a hard time for pointing out the obvious.

Reid place obstacles in his own way.

He should have gave Bowles the job in the beginning, and let Juan be the linebacker/asst defensive coach, so he could learn while saving face.

But Reid have now threw him under the bus to save his ass when he shouldn’t have hired him in the first place.

Another example of Reid taking 2 steps back in major areas while taking 1 step forward in another.

Save us Lurie!!!!

Fire Andy Reid!

Respect Mhenski, I can understand that..we are all different…I just feel some things have gone a certain way because of the play calling and I just can’t blame a individual when things aren’t in his favor to begin with….
the same thing that happened with the defense this Sunday, the same happened with the offense. Play calling in the end! Eagles got a way from what was working well. Vick 14 of 18 (should of been 15, counting a drop pass) on plays where he had some quick options. Vick holding the ball is a direct result of the play calling. MM thinks being aggressive is throwing 50 yards down the field, when you can be just as aggressive with underneath and short to intermediate routes with the WR’s we have. I don’t like the play calling I’ve seen from MM at times, but I think that he can figure it out, and begin to call the game, that favors the offense. I am not throwing him under the bus, like Vick can do a better job taking care of the ball, the OC can do a better job calling the game….

Now…. about the O….. first order of Biz…. Fire marty.

We need to run the ball and use screens… this is basic basic football stuff here… even a guy like Vinnie knows we need to use screens when we have NO OLINE. I dont care who the qb is….. free blitzers up the middle without help is going to get someone killed. Has anyone else noticed that they are using those swing passes to McCoy a little more? One down and many more to go…Reid, Marty, Vick, Washburn, Mudd need to all go after this season. I could go off on all of them right now on how they are clearly not good enough to get the job done but its already been said before by me and by many of the other Eagles fans everywhere. And people crucify us for supposedly not knowing anything yet the countless things we plead for as Eagles fans just end up flat out happening a few seasons later, a few seasons too late, after more time has been wasted.

And thats is the thing that pisses me off more than anything. More time will be wasted after this season is over. This regime could have already been turned upside down and a fresh start should have already begun. Yet people were afraid of change because god forbid we lose Andy Reid and all his expert football decisions in regard to who his players and fellow coaches are. He must be the best coach ever and only coach out there on the planet to still deserve to be here.

Scorp, your post to go with many others completely makes my point. As fans of this team, we clearly call out some of the blatant, mind boggling, ridiculous moves this team makes. We call out their obvious deficiencies. And we plead for changes to be made sooner rather than later when just more time has been wasted. We flat out know it will not contribute to a superbowl. Yet we are pretty much called assholes by other teams fans and some of our own. And then what happens? The pleadings we make for days, weeks, years end up taking place anyway because it didn’t work out.

I remember when the Eagles were top of the NFC East in Mcnabb years and my friend telling me Reid was a fraud.

I would argue him down in Reid’s defense but eventually saw his points were correct.

Reid inherited leaders…Hugh Douglas, Brian Dawkins, Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor, Jeremiah Trotter, Hollis Thomas, Duce Staley…….

A nucleus most coaches would die to build a program with.

With these leaders already in place all he had to do was choose the right defensive coordinator so he could focus on the offensive side of the ball and overall plan for the team.

He chose Mcnabb which was the key move because Ray Rhodes never had a steady leader at QB which turned out to be his achilles heel.

Reid eventually began to win with an already veteran team mixed with some new parts added through Modrak.

The team was on it’s way with proper balance.

finally Lurie had an organization with the proper checks and balances.

Then Reid undercut Modrak to gain power, thinking of himself opposed to all the hard work that was put in before he got here.

My friend pointed this out to me back then and said this team will not win anything with this Reid guy.

He’s selfish and don’t value those who paved the way for his success. And he was right.

He chose Heckert because he wanted a lackey, instead of a leader like Modrak and the talent eventually declined to mediocrity.

Another thing my friend pointed out is that when other NFC East teams ruled the NFC East, they won multiple Superbowls.

Andy Reid was handed the reigns when the NFC East was garbage along with a weak NFC and have nothing to show for it.

Through the years I realize he was right and what sealed it for me is when I seen the Giants build from nothing only to win a Superbowl with the defensive guy that came from the Eagles.

We let him go while JJ was ailing only to hire McDermott & the failed offensive line coach who was fired today.

Now, I view things correctly instead of using blind faith.

I’ve been an Eagles fan al my life and love the idea of the hard nosed Eagles team and Andy have destroyed that.

Even when my old teams would lose we knew the opposing teams would leave with serious battle wounds. He even took that from us. look at how soft our teams have become.

Sorry to say…My friend was right and I won’t support this team with one dime until Reid is outta here.

Yeah right – asking a QB to be a QB is putting him in position to fail?

One week they ask Vick to stay in the pocket and people say that goes against his strength. The next week they let him run a QB draw and people say he shouldn’t carry the ball.

And you’re right, it was the same thing with McNabb. Every time he threw a pass behind a receiver somebody would say that we should have ran the ball because we know McNabb can’t throw on target… that’s not his strength…

I think everyone in Philly would like nothing better than to have a QB whos strength is being a QB. A guy who they don’t have to build a gameplan around his weakness.

You are correct that Andy Reid is the problem. And it’s because he is the one who put McNabb and Vick in a WCO that relays on timing plays. Those two are the worse possible chooses.

@Irish Eagles – The Eagles haven’t been a WCO in years!!!! get off that already! and when the Eagles have run the WCO offense or plays similar with Vick this year he has been successful….The 7 step drops behind a poor O Line is the problem….now if you want to complain about Vick’s TO’s thats a different story, but saying he can’t execute the WCO is so far from the truth, its laughable….

@RealTalk – Well, I guess that would depend on what you consider a WCO. If your definition of the WCO is just plays with three step drops then you are wrong. To quote Steve Young (who should know) “The WCO is a set of plays that tie the QB’s feet to the receivers route, timing plays. 5 steps for longer passes, 3 steps for shorter passes”. Of course when your QB is 5’11” you would need deeper drops.

My point is that neither Vick or McNabb can release the ball on time. McNabb was the worst and Vick is nearly as bad. Neither one can make fast reads. Both these guys drop back and bounce up and down waiting for receivers to come open – so your right, that’s not a WCO, but that’s also not the way the Eagles plays are drawn-up.

my point is this – the Eagles have utilized alot more 3 to 5 step drops this season than the past and Vick has been successful….you only see me mention 7 step drops is what causes the trouble, and its not the height its the line….every 7 step drop, Vick is feeling the pressure….why? because the routes take too long to develop in comparison to the time the line can hold their blocks….When the Eagles have intermediate passes Vick is making quick reads….where does quick reads come into play with the 7 step drop?

Real, they all need to go! Vick included! He is a major part of the problem, too! Please stop defending him. It’s ridiculous. I believe you are smarter than that. It’s exhausting, to be a fan of, & watch this team anymore. Same $#!T every year, until the Hindenburg is gone!

DCAR – you don’t agree with me, as you just stated….I dont agree with you….I believe the play calling needs to be better and more intermediate to short throws and no one needs to go, call the game the way I’ve been saying and we’ll all be happy!

Reid inherited Hugh Douglas, Brian Dawkins, Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor, Jeremiah Trotter, and Hollis Thomas, but they were not great players when he got them. Jim Johnson made them great players. Not one of them ever made a pro bowl till Reid/JJ came to Philly.

JJ was overrated too (Bless his Soul) but you have to remember how weak the NFC Conference was in the early 2000’s, Teams like the TB Bucs,PAnthers,Giants,Cowboys,Bears,Falcons were all Offensively challenged and all relied on their Defenses and Running Games to set up their Offenses..
PAckers, 49ers,Saints were all rebuilding during this Time

What a joke! Should Castillo have been fired, not as much as he should have never been hired! Reid put this man in a postion to fail, much like he does with his football team. But Reid knows more than us. Where are the people pounding their chests about what a great decision it was to pass over Spags. Look, Castillo was no good as DC, but given his hiring was Reid’s idea, Reid should be going with him. In the meantime, Marty and his shitty playcalling are safe, Vick and his autrocious play are safe, April and the ST safe (really), Mudd and horrific lineplay-safe, Washburn and no sacks in four games-safe. They got to do more than just throw Castillo under the bus.

I really don’t blame Vick here.

He’s tough as nails and Most QB’s would have been on stretchers by now.

How, can you expect him to succeed with 2-3 defenders in the backfield every time the ball is snapped?

This offensive line was average last year and is the worse in the NFL to date.

You think Pouncy would have been a good pick?

Hell, with Mudd’s finesse bullshit!

We want road graters!!!

We want Big imposing, nasty, SOB’s on the line.

No more gimmicks!

I’m tired of it already.

I want a regular big defensive line like the Lions & Giants.

I want Safeties that destroys everything that dares to come in it’s space.

I want receivers that catch the ball and make yards after the catch like the giants & 49ers receivers.

I want a real team coached by a real coach.

And if this is not done.

I want a new owner so that I can cheer for this team again.

I agree with SOngs above and have stated for 3 years now that this Team was soft and not built to play in PHilly, the Northeast of the NFC East

This Passaholic Coach AR & MM are built for a Dome-Team or in the Deep South or California for nicer weather.. Coach AR System is not built for the outdoor elements/cold weather come December/Playoff Time

New HC will be Perry Jewell from the NY Giants

I think Paulman was the only one who wanted Center Pouncey with the Eagles 1st Pick back from 3 Years ago. I stated then as I do know, whenever you can grab an All-Pro Center who will play at a Pro-Bowl Level for 10-12 Years and be that leader of the OL the you grab him… most laughed at my notion… Pouncey has turned out like many of us who actually follow footbal, thought he would..

The stats on the D this year are as follows:

The Eagles D was 1st in 3rd down % from quarters 1-3, but was 30th in getting stops on 3rd in the 4th

And that’s the problem. It was too reminiscent of last year. Play good ball in 3 quarters isn’t going to cut it. You don’t blow two fourth quarter leads and expect everything to be okay.

One stop by the D in each game and eagles win. Offense sells tickets. Defense wins games. Period.
