Eagles Make Great Move By Hiring San Fran’s Tom Gamble

TomGamble1GM Howie Roseman and the Eagles made an excellent decision today when they hired Tom Gamble away from the San Francisco 49ers and made him the team’s VP of Player Personnel.   Gamble, who is 49 has been in the NFL for 25 years and he already has a relationship with Chip Kelly.

“Since Ryan Grigson left to become the general manager of the Colts, we’ve been looking for the right person to fill his spot, and we are excited about what Tom can bring to the team,” said Roseman. “He’s not only a talented evaluator but also a good man and the type of person you want as a part of your team.”

Hopefully he’ll be able to help find Kelly some players, who will improve this football team immediately.

The 49ers didn’t win the Super Bowl, but they have the best personnel in the league.  Gamble, who had been with the team for eight years, was a major part of their drafting process.  Hopefully, he’ll be able to bring that know how to the Eagles.

Gamble’s Dad, Harry was the Birds GM back in the 80’s for Norman Braman.

The best News of the Decade so far for the Eagles.. This Guy is the “Football Mind” the Eagles Front Office havs been lacking since Tom Modrak left the Eagles 10 Years ago..
This could also help the Eagles in maybe snatching up Free-Agents
LB Larry Grant, Safety Gholdston.. This Guy knows Talent in who it translates from the COllege to the Pro game.. His Draft picks have shown to be tough, smart, physical and good character guys (except for Michael Crabtree) Welcome aboard Tom, a definite good sight for my sore eyes..

Excellent move. This is a great move. I am looking forward to the draft and watching what an experienced and successful NFL personell executive can do with Howie’s cap expertise. The team is in a favorable cap position, and with Gamble adding his experience to Kelly’s new approach, this should be an exciting time in Philly. Hopefully Kelly can get his QB situation resolved and the team can really start shaking things up.

many of us have been calling for this all year long.. Get a Football Mind
in the Front Office to hanve Overall Roster Management and ovesee Drafting/Scouting to Provide the best Talent for the COachign Staff..
it has to be sepaearted from the Coach.. Let the talent Evaluators obtain Talent and let the Coaches Coach and let the Money nad Marketing Guys handle the Contracts/Salary Cap Management and the Operations of the Stadiumtickets, Markeeting, SPecial Events, etc,etc..

Finally we have talent evaluators with a plan… remember the good ole days when you designed your team to control your own Division ? Example: if 2 or 3 divisional teams had great TE’s & WR’s you made sure that your team had great CB’s and safteys that could cover & hit. Sorry to remind everyone but The Cowboys ( I hate dallas ) drafted Erik Williams & Larry Allen for 1 reason: to block Reggie White & Jerome Brown twice a yr, and by yr 2-3 they did just that and got the best of them. and they controlled the Div

He mite not be a talent evaluator, but he sure could handle all the other facets of the franchise. Smart move bringing this guy in, who obviously is very good at it.

The Eagles hired a coach from the Browns as offensive coordinator.

A coach from the browns as defensive coordinator.

“No NFL experience guy” to be head coach.

Hiring Tom Gamble is like adding orange juice to a glass of Drano.

It might make it taste a little better, but it will still kill you.

This front office is horrible. They stay up late at night, trying to figure out how to agitate their fans.

Resigning the turnover machine, was just the icing on the cake.

They defy all logic. Spock would just drop dead if he had to sit in on their power meetings.

Didn’t the 49ers and the Ravens show the whole league, that fundamentals and no turnovers are the way to win??

I am preparing for them to take a player from Division III in the first round, and tell us:

“He has a high motor”
“He’s versitol. he can play every position on the line. He’s not good at any of them. But he can play them all!”

Sorry. I still can’t get over the defensive coordinator hire.

Shut out ability. What a joke.

“Baby Reid” is moving up the Bum latter without playing a game yet.

I stated a month ago that Tom Donahoe was not interested in working full-time any longer.. He prefers to simply be an advisor which he was hired last March to do..he is older, has grown kids and grand hold den and was not interested into returning to 18 hours days for 9-10 months a year..
I believed he wanted one last shot of actively building a Football Team/ Roster but I was wrong.. I heard he helped Lurie out in getting the Administration part of the Organization straightened out as they replaced a couple of Andy Reid hires in Communication/Marketing, etc and probably helped prepped Lurie, Roseman & Smolenski on Interview Questions, etc for their Job Search

I believe that Donahoe had a 2 year deal as an Executive Advisor
And would expect him to just be ears for Lurie while he’s around with the new Coaching Staff and Gamble on board..

I have been sour on this HC hire but I believe that his a homer here and this team may work.

This will take time but if they can keep these guys around we will be ok.

They need a lot of pieces on DF Stevo, & Davis ain’t exactly Knute Rockne. The entire Secondary needs to be flushed, we need 2 NT’s, a ROLB, a DE, & a young ILB. Even if he miraculously figures out how to be a successful DC, it’s going to take at least 2 years to rebuild this DF. Let’s not get started about the QB position, O-line, TE’s & a Big WR! 2 years at a minimum of success.

Let’s say the Eagkes get LB Kruger and Grant in Free-Agency,
Then get a solid Safety also
Trade T Cole for a 3rd Rounder, Asmo reworks his deal,
They Re-Sign DRC and then Draft a NT (Star) and CB (Rhodes)
They could have a hint of the following

DL – Cox, Star, Graham
LB – Kruger, Ryan, Grant & Kendrick’s
CB -Asmo, DRC. Rhodes, Boykin
S. – Gholtston, Allen ( with Draft pick competing)

Love the LB Corps which is the crucial position in having a 3-4

3-4 Teams who need Pass-Rushing DE’s and would be willing to part with their 3rd Round PIcks

1) Patriots – (Belecheck has always loved T Coles Plays and would have around the #90 Overall pick since they are selecting towards the end of the 3rd Round)
#2) Falcons (only legitimate Pass-Rusher they have is Jon Abraham who is getting long in the tooth.. they play 4-3 and need a Pass-Rusher desperately , their 3rd Pick is Apprx #90 Overall also
#3) Panthers (Also need a Pass-Rusher outside of DE Charles Johnson and their 3rd Round Pick is around #80th Overall, Obvioulsy Cole would know PAnthers DC mcDermott System and had good Seasons for him)

Grabbing a former All-Pro who provides a Defense in something that they need and could give you 8-10 Sacks a Season for a mid 3rd Round Pick is a pretty good Deal for Teams in need of Pass-Rushers..

Howie is smart enough to know that he needs someone with experience evaluating 3-4 defensive players. Gamble helped build one of the most talented 3-4 teams, the 49ers.

Tom Gamble grew up two blocks away from me. He has worked for a few NFL teams and he is very good at what he does.

Re: Harbaugh and the 49ers
Most NFL Observors felt that 49ers have had nice talent that started with Mike NOlan’s Draft and thru Singletary’s short rein, but they lacked a QB which is Harbaugh’s sSpecialty (since he was a QB himself), Just look what HArbaugh did with Alex SMith and now Colin Kapernick, but make no mistake when you draft a Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Joe Staley,N Bowman, P Willis, Anthony Davis, Mike Iuapati, McDonald, D Gholston,M Crabtree, Aldon Smith, K Hunter, L James, all in a 3-4 Year Window, you are amassing some Taleneted Players that fit their Scheme’s and Philosophy

I think Jason LaCanfora should wipe…not the egg, but the CARTON of eggs he has off his face. How he could insinuate Joe Banner was peaches and cream to work with, but somehow Howie wasn’t, is beyond me. The next person you find that likes Banner…will be the first.
Howie got the guy he wanted to Coach the team. A bright mind who’s thought of as one of the up and coming visionaries in the game, whether he coached an NFL game yet or not. If Howie was as much of a deterant as LaCanfora said he was, I’m pretty sure Kelly wouldn’t have signed on to work with him.
And not only that, but now he reels in the highly thought of Tom Gamble…who’s been busy building a SB team out in SF. Between Donahue helping build the SB winning Steelers, Mueller helping build a SB winning team in NO and now Gamble rescuing the Niners from the straits, we’re not talking about some no count ham and eggers here.
For the first time in a LONG time I feel like theres hope for this organization and they’re finally headed in the right direction.

I feel SO MUCH better about the Eagles prospects moving into the future. Now, is this the guy that’s going to eventually move Roseman out of the GM role and exclusively into contract negotiations?…Very possibly and he should be. This hire essentially solidifies my idea that Roseman keeps hiring people to cover up his lack know how and keeps adding high accumen front office people to bolster his OJT…which is absurd given his probably ridiculous salary and title, but whatever these people have a very good chance of bringing in phenomenal defensive talent to Philly which is something that really hasn’t happened since the Buddy Ryan to Ray Rhodes eras.

to Andrew P’s point: With Chip Kelly being a college coach he just didn’t have the types of relationships with NFL execs that a lot of seasoned Pro assistants have so it would have been easy for Roseman to be as much of a deterrent as LaCanfora had been told with Kelly getting so much as a whisper of any of it. Ray Horton wold have been a great 3-4 DC hire for the Eagles, but I bet he was told to stay away for his own good.

This type of information you don’t hold onto…you let it be known to the Eagle nation asap….What fan wants a player that doesn’t want to play for their city/team? None! I don’t believe it, this is something you mention among discussion with Eagles fans, not a year later…

Yes guys it is true. Remember i live right next to camp pendelton in Oceanside. I get a lot of Marines that come into my bar (his cousin is a marine) I didn’t mention it before because i didn’t want to believe it. But watching them play this yr sums it up. They flat out quit on Reid.
