Notes From The Phillies’ 2-1 Loss To Arizona

nostopperThe Philadelphia Phillies lost their second straight game on Thursday night, falling to the Diamondbacks 2-1. Their record drops to 16-20.

  • More tough luck for Cole Hamels. Once again, the ace pitched a solid game but received no help from his teammates. Hamels allowed two runs over six innings. He wasn’t at his best tonight, but certainly gave the team a good chance to win, and pitched out of several tight situations.
  • This was just one of those games where the top of the order went completely MIA. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Michael Young, and Ryan Howard combined to go 0-14.
  • Domonic Brown went 2-4 and scored a run. Brown hit a one-out double in the ninth inning.
  • Ben Revere made his third straight start in centerfield, but Charlie Manuel has absolutely no confidence in Revere at the plate, lifting the young outfielder for John Mayberry late in the game with two runners on and one out in the seventh inning.
  • Mayberry was thrown out at second in the seventh inning. Mayberry couldn’t read whether or not the ball was going to be caught, and hesitated to make his break for second.
  • Delmon Young went 2-4, although on one of his hits he was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
  • Kevin Frandsen drove in the team’s only run.
  • The offense as a whole went just 1-8 with runners in scoring position.
  • Phillippe Aumont and Jeremy Horst were able to combine for two scoreless innings to finish the game.
  • Horst worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh.

Final Thoughts

It’s just another one of those nights.

At least once or twice a week, the Phillies have a game where their offense is just absolutely pitiful, and they lose a close game by one or two runs.

The additions of Carlos Ruiz and Delmon Young have had very little impact so far. Since returning over a week ago, the two hitters have combined for just one homerun and three RBI’s (all belonging to Young), and Young is batting just .185 and Ruiz is batting just .156. They’re going to be better than what they’ve shown so far, but clearly their presence isn’t enough to make a significant difference on this lineup.

The way that this Phillies team has played this season is really starting to remind me of the 2012 group. Every time you thought the 2012 team was about to turn the corner and really get some serious momentum going, something would go wrong and they’d fall flat on their faces. That’s how its been for this team. The Phillies will impress with a couple of nice wins over the Giants, only to drop the next two games in disappointing fashion, pushing themselves back to four games below .500.

I’ve never seen a team look so hopeless with their ace on the mound. When it’s your top pitcher’s turn in the rotation, it’s supposed to be the team’s best chance for a victory. But with this team, the opposite is true. Even though Cole Hamels has pitched well for most of the season, the Phillies just can’t find ways to win when he’s on the mound. At this point, you can practically expect the offense give one of these lousy efforts whenever Hamels goes out to pitch. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

The offense will need to do much better tomorrow with Tyler Cloyd on the mound.

Something stinking here…The Phillies, although they pay Hamels a ton, are going to ruin what’s left of his career.

This is the 4th year of them not scoring for Hamels…Even if he throws a shutout, he doesn’t get a W.

Anybody ever ask Charlie what the problem is here?

Reporter: ‘Charlie, why do the Phillies always seem to come up shy when Cole Hamels is on the mound?’

Charlie: ‘Well, this is a funny game sometimes…Your pitcher can throw real good, but, at the same time, your hitters aren’t hittin’ the ball…’

Reporter: ‘Yeah, but, why has the team seemed to come up short over the past few years when Hamels is on the mound?’

Charlie: ‘Well, like I said, baseball is a funny game sometimes, and the guys are givin’ total effort…’

Story of his career. No run support. If I have to watch Rollins one more time, not hustle, popup/ground-out, at the 1st pitch, with runners in scoring position, I’m going to tear my own head off! But hey, don’t worry, he’ll put up his hollow #’s as usual, at the end of the year, when it doesn’t matter, to pad his stats, & all his lovers will say how awesome he still is! He’s notorious for not showing up, when we need him, & his so-called leadership! Between Utley’s, unwarranted ripping of the fans non-support, to the Halladay debacle, to Rollins dogging it, to Mayberry, Brown & Ruiz’s, stupid & undisciplined play, to the non-existence of Revere, to the ineptness of the Great Booben, I can’t stomach watching this slop anymore!!!! Please, Montgomery, Middleton, or someone who gives a rats @$$ about it’s fan bases sanity & loyalty, please rid us of Ruin 2maro, Manuel & the has-been’s & never-will-be’s, we have on this roster! For the love of God, PLEASE!!!!

What’s happened to the passion, energy the can-do attitude of Jimmy Rollins..
These last couple of Seasons, he simply plays it too cool, too non-chalant and seems to have lost his passion for the Game.. As one of the leaders of this Team, I am very disappointed in his pkay and even worse, his cavalier attitude and body language out there, he used to thrive under pressure, big at-bat situations late in games, now it simply appears that he is collecting a nice paycheck and going thru the motions.. It makes me sick to watch..

I agree with u Paulman. It’s pretty clear to my jimmy is in the twilight of his career and is a front running player on the field and off.

That’s what happens when you surround ur franchise player with teammates getting 20+ million a year

Parra squeezed bunt up the first base line, Cody scores. Howard is the worst defensive player in MLB.

Ryan Howard was thrown out twice from the outfield at first base and struck out twice

I would love to explain to me why these guys are on the roster:

1) Jeremy Horst who has pitched 15.1 innings, gave up 19hits, 7 walks, and 10 ER

2) Raul Valdes 18 innings pitched, 22 hits, 6 walks and 14 ER.

Cmon man get these fuckers outta here

I agree 100% and you can probably add Chad Durbin to this list
Is Mike Stutes back to Pitching ?? Is he healthy and down at AAA??

Stutes is in AAA and healthy and has been up and down there but is clearly better than Valdes and Horst. Justin De Fratus is also better than these two busts.

I would keep Durbin around just for middle relief in those shit games…

I agree.. bring up Stutes/DeFratus and send down Horst and flat out release Valdese and it would probably make sense to hang onto Durbin for those bad games to eat up Innings

I think the team is totally sending the wrong message keeping these two guys on the squad and bringing up Cloyd over Morgan. Cloyd will give up at least 5 tonight

So much for Delmon Young (.185) and Carlos Ruiz (.156) helping the Phils make an assault on the division upon their return.

They need to be assaulted by a pack wolves, or hyena’s!

I heard that Delmon Young’s Weight is almost Twice his Batting Average..
So you better make it a large pack of Hyea’s..

I think Delmon looks great and in the best shape he has been in years. guy lost minimum 30 lbs since last year and although he doesnt have plate discipline he has a nice stroke in my opinion

He has lost alot of weight and is in the best shape he’s been in for the
Last 2-3 Years.. He’s just made for the AL and being a DH where he would get 20-25 At Bats a week, the nan can hit but playing 2-3 Gamez a week won’t allow him to find a rhythm to do much for the Phils I’m afraid..

Ruiz only has 32 at bats he will come around and if he doesnt maybe he will get a prescription for some ritalin. Young only has 27 at bats. The weather will be getting warm and ruiz will get going, I have no clue what Young will do and if he will even play but if he plays he will get going too. But what they bring to the table will not help them get to the playoffs especially if Cloyd, Valdes, Horst or Lannan is pitching.

the biggest problem for me right now is Jimmy Rollins and its not his batting average its his strikeouts.
