Chip Kelly’s Practices Are Loud, Fast And Chaotic

ChipKellyFootballsClearly the goal of Chip Kelly’s practices are to mimmic the games.  There’s music blasted so you have to seriously concentrate to hear what somebody else is saying.  The drills are done at the fastest speed, one after another in the same manner that occurs in a game.

Many times after you play a game, you have no idea what exactly happened.  For lack of a better expression, after the game you have the “Fog of War”, which means nobody really knows everything that happened, including the coaches, and that’s why film of practice and the games, plays such an important party.

During the some of the drills all of the five quarterbacks, who were working out threw the football to a receiver at the same time.  The players don’t stand around very long, they’re moving constantly and going from one drill to another.  The coaches don’t do very much stop players to coach them during the drill sessions.  The coaching is done during the brief teaching periods, or it’s done inside in the meeting room because Kelly doesn’t like to see practice slow down.

Numerous selections by Kanye West and Nicki Minaj.   I hear Dr. Dre and TuPac with California Love. AC-DC makes an appearance.  Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO You could hear the techno/dance number “Don’t You Worry Child”.  We are the Champions and We Will Rock You by Queen.

All the quarterbacks from Michael Vick to Nick Foles to Dennis Dixon to Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne are all running the read option, but Vick and Dixon are the only who really look like they can run it.  You know teams are going to force Foles and Barkley to keep the ball if they’re in there running it.

All of the quarterbacks except Dixon were hesitating at times in making adjustments.  They signal the plays into the quarterback at break neck speed, as he gets the play, recognizes the defense and makes adjustments at the line of scrimmage to what he sees.  You can see the running backs move from one side of the quarterback to the other as the quarterbacks is making the call.  Not one quarterback took at snap from center, it was all in the shotgun formation.

“It’s part of our offense. It’s what we do,” Vick said afterward about the read option. “You might see it, you might not. But it looked pretty good.”

Clearly Vick has the most experience, the best speed, and the strongest arm of the quarterbacks and right now that’s why he’s the starter.  Everyone is learning except Dixon.

“The thing is, none of the quarterbacks are focused on being what everybody wants right now,” Vick said. “We’ve got to learn this system, we’ve got to understand it, we’ve got to be able to go out and do it each and every day.”

Vick seemed to have a good day making decisions on the run and delivering the football accurately.  Barkley’s throws outside seem to lack much steam.

There should never be a reference to what overpaid athletes do compared to underpaid military personell do in defense, “fog of war”.

And the reports I have heard are that Dixon looked the smoothest, Vick was the most hesitant, forcing the play

The Barkley trade more Thant any other qb transaction this off season tells us where kelly is heading at the qb position

Oh Lord. You made the mistake of saying positive things about M. Vick.

Wait for the “Vick has never been and will never be a good QB” fan club to start their kvetching.

I”m convinced that whoever wins the job will get their doppelganger backup as #2 and then one of the other left overs will be #3 and odd man out will be cut.

So if it’s Vick – Dixon is back up. If it’s Barkley/Foles – Foles/Barkley will be backup. And seems like Kelly will be installing some read option into his plan – that doesn’t bode well for out flat-footed QBs – though I don’t know how athletic Barkley is or isn’t as the case may be.

“And the reports I have heard are that Dixon looked the smoothest, Vick was the most hesitant, forcing the play”

Actually reports seems to be that Dixon is the most comfortable – and everyone else had their moments. Of course all the reports are coming from people who actually watched the practice so no one’s is more right than the other.

I don’t know Jake, every report I saw said what G said that Barkley’s throws were not nearly as strong as Vick and Foles but it’s only one day if the season started Sunday Dennis Dixon would probably be the starter.

Barkleys arm lacked much steam? Ur a weasel G.. I’ve heard all day yesterday that Barkley had zip on the ball and a quick release.. And that Vick looked the most confused out of all the QBs..Vick won’t succeed in this offense because to be honest, he just isn’t an intelligent person. He’s a dee de dee..

Watch barkleys film. I’ve watched him drop balls from 65 yards in the air. A top 5 pick last year n slid to fourth only because of his win/ loss record . Barkley will be our starter by years end

Where did you read that – cause the (few) reports that did report on QB throwing said Vick had the strongest arm of the bunch with Foles beings second as far as arm strength.

I read about the “ZIP” that Vick had on his throws.

Excited about “zip”

“Zip” is $$.

Can’t win without “zip”

What the hell is your problem?

If you have problems with what the reporters are reporting, take it up with them. Your bitchiness is ridiculous (and predictable) – what is it your time of the month?

You heard wrong…His arm is weak. He will be holding the clipboard, even if he makes the team over Dixon……Time to wake up…..

LOL. Everyone and their conflicting reports.

Seriously pretty much EVERY report says the same thing.

Dixon looked the best – and everyone else had their moments.

But they also tend to say that Dixon/Vick look most comfortable running the read option – which isn’t a big surprise.

But Dixon is the “winner” of the early practices as far as comfort and execution.

All I’ve read are reports about what music was playing. I found that very informative and hope to read more about the song selection in the future.

**Actual Eagles News***
Eagles to Sign RB Felix Jones to a 1 Year Deal as reported by ESPN Adam Shefter.. Felix Jones will compete for back-up Reps with Bryce Brown who has to correct his “Fumblelitis” or will not make this Club.. F Jones can also
Contribute in the Return Game and is a much better receiver out of the backfield than BRown is.. Interesting pick-up with a low-risk, high-reward kind of payoff.. One thing I am concerned about is that McCoy Running abilitily is really between the Tackles with his great cut-back abilitiy..
This variation Read-Option Offense that Kelly is fooling around with these OTA and maybe Summer Camp rely more on a RB with more pure outside speed which suits Felix Jones running style better than either McCoy/Brown.. It will be interesting to watch, and don’t be surprised if McCoy receives less touches in Kelly’s new Offense than he did under AR..

I dont see it that way P man. I think Kelly wants to use 3 backs if not four like how we saw with the Saints using Darren Sproles, Ivory, Ingram and Thomas. Atlanta also uses 3 backs Turner, Rodgers and Snelling.

I agree- Kelly’s OFfenses in Oregon used a Running Back and WR by COmmittee.. He has not been a 1 Player Feature Back or WR in a long time..
(this is something to watch for McCoy & D-JAx may whine about less-touches)

Paulman I would think Brown runs more like Jones then McMoy, might actually help brown with his speed. I guess it won’t matter though because according to G they only signed him so they can cut him. Probably just a ploy to keep him away from N England. Good stuff G, is that why you didn’t post anything yesterday? You were busy undercover.

Never too early for Fantasy Football talk! Here are my top 5 Eagles fantasy players this year.

5. Jeremy Maclin
4. Bryce Brown
3. Shady McCoy
2. Zach Erz
1. Desean Jackson

Finally a coach who will use Desean Jackson much like how The Vikings used Percy Harvin. Jackson will be in the pass game, backfield and the return game. I think he puts up Randle Cobb like numbers this year. 1100 yards and 9 TD’s.

You can tell Ertz is Chips new toy. Ertz will line up all over the field. Im hearing people compare him too Witten but I think thats way off. I think he’s more like Jimmy Graham. I think he gets 850 yards, 100 yards rushing and 10 TD’s this year.

Ertz will end 40-45 Receptions — 700 Yards and 4-5 TD’s

There is no way D-Jax gets used like Percy Harvin who is a head case too,but physically much stronger and tougher to handle slants/bubble routes, reverses.. D-Jax would not last 8 Weeks getting the ball between the numbers as often as ercy Harvin does, he’s too small, fragile & soft to handle.. D-Jax may have a real difficult time getting many touches and could be the odd-man out by mid-season at the WR Position..

10 td’s from Ertz would be amazing. But you have Mccoy as your 3rd best fantasy player on the Eagles squad? He’s by far #1. Top 5 fantasy pick overall. And that’s in all formats..

I would stay away from Eagles PLayers as far as Fantasy Football Points go..
He will spread the Ball between 4-5 WR’s, 2-3 TE’s and 2-3 RB’s so no one Player or 2 will put up big numbers..
Watch 2-3 RB’s all get Touches == and watch for all WR’s and TE shuttle in and out the high paced Offense to keep Defense’s on their TOes..
You will not See D-Jax/McCoy taking 60 SNaps on Offense a Game.. More like 40

If Jackson and Ertz are going to have years like that not to mention the other 3 guys in your top 5 there’s going to be a qb cracking that list for sure.

If the Eagles run a straight read/option offense there is no way anyone will beat-out Michael Vick for the starting job. Except maybe Dixon, if Vick truly can’t grasp the system. But I expect that Vick will have no trouble learning the reads.

For the guys who hate Mick Vick personally – they will have to live with him for a while. For the guys who hate Mike Vick’s style of play – they will have to live with it as long as Chip Kelly is the coach. Because as long as Kelly is coach there will likely be a QB that plays Mike Vick’s running style.

I just hope the Eagles are the first team to ever win a super bowl with a read/option offense.

I agree Irish, but I have a hard time believing this will strictly be a read option offense. You know I am a fan of Vick but Foles and Barkley are on this roster for a reason.

Yeah, and Pat Shurmur is here too, but I think it’s to incorporate the WCO timed pass plays into Kelly’s zone/read offense.

I don’t buy into the idea that guys like Foles and Barkley can’t run the zone/read just because they are slow. GCobb commented that the defenses will just force the QB to keep the ball on every play, but it is not that easy. If the defense could dictated who carries the ball they would do it on every play no matter who the QB was.

I think Kelly will use those slow QBs in the some zone/read offense. I just don’t think they can be as good Vick at running it.

That’s all just guessing though – next week my guess might be different….lol

But the big question sti remains, how many weeks or games can Vick last in an Offesnse that would expose him to more hits.. 4 or 5 Games would be my guess.. Chip Kelly is not stupid and knows that exposing a QB to a similar type of Read-Option Offense that he ran at Aorehon would get QB’s killed at the NFL Level..
