Can The Eagles Make The Playoffs in 2013?

MichaelVick36The Philadelphia Eagles will make the playoffs this season.  Glass half full, or am I just fool?  I’ll gladly accept your barrage of insults.  The list of factoids leading to a negative projection for how this season will carry out is full of deficiencies and uncertainties.  The time is ticking for Vick to miss time with an injury.  Our defense will be unreliable, a set-back and added pressure for the offense to perform at a high level.  The schedule has us playing three games in 11 days.  After the reunion of the “hip-to hip” tandem of Reid and McNabb for the Thursday night match-up against the Chiefs, we head on the road for three weeks starting with the offensive arsenal in Denver.  So why am I so confident that with all of these obstacles this team will make the playoffs?  I have my reasons, so let us get to them.

  • Chip Kelly is a wildcard, an unknown, an intelligent college coach looking to make the transition at the pro level.  How long will it take for him to adjust to the big leagues?  He is ready, as in being ready now.  Kelly has offenses, defenses, and special team game-plans ready for each quarter.  If the first approach fails to work, he will introduce the next, and then the next and so on.  He will not allow the other coach to out-think him; the guy has too much pride in what he does.  This happens to be the same pride which can come off as “short” with the media with some of the answers he gives.  His goal is not to “please” us with his personality.  His goal is to win, end of sentence, good morning, good night, that’s all she wrote.

  • The Eagles will finish the season in the top three when it comes to running the football.  The Eagles are going to run the ball, multiple carriers and a variety of schemes.  They are going to rush on all downs, consistently and effectively behind a punishing offensive line.  Vick will run, not out of panic, but as of alternative option on pre-discussed situations that Kelly has addressed with him.  Vick appreciated what Reid did for him, but Vick respects the intelligence of Kelly and what he is trying to do with this offense.   Vick is not the player of old, but he is also not old enough to where he can’t be a threat in the run option.

  • Special Teams will also be top 3 in the NFL.  You think special teams play is not a big enough impact on the game to be mentioned?  The coverage teams have looked excellent.  Desean will have the opportunity to return the majority of punts, and if fumble woes can be reduced, both Brown and Johnson provide an electricity to take it to the house.  We aren’t going to allow teams to start with good field position.  Every yard is earned under the Chip Kelly “school of thinking.”

  • The secondary is awful, so pressure will be needed from the front seven.  The Giants when winning their second Super-Bowl a few years back had a weak secondary; it was their pressure on Brady that allowed them to disrupt enough passing attempts to help secure that victory.  Cole and Graham are awful at covering and playing in space.  You will see them start but not finish in their linebacker stance, they will be blitzing behind the stunts and twists of the defensive line.  We will rotate the big men to keep them fresh, and bring havoc to opposing quarterbacks.  The long ball and covering tight-ends will not be pretty, but at the end of the day the defense will do enough to help us win more than loose.

  • The NFC East- One of the most over-rated divisions in the NFL.  Any team can finish first or last with talent potential and if a couple breaks happen along the way.  The Eagles will win the NFC East.  The breaks will go our way, the transition, the re-building, save those titles for other teams in the NFL.  The Philadelphia Eagles are a contender, a threat and you better be a believer because the band wagon thing is something I can’t stand.

7-8 wins tops, no playoffs. They’ll probably finish 4th in the division.

They are a minimum 8-8 team. That’s the base. I think they could sneak into the playoffs. If the offense really clicks and the defense holds folk to 24 a game…then we win the division and get a first round buy.

I originally had 8-8, with the TB game as a win…but now I see that’s their 3rd straight road game. Very tough spot. NFL teams win around 30% of the time in that spot, so I have to move it to a L.

Puts them at 7-9 and an old man at QB. Good times.

Still huge questions to be answered at the most important position and a crappy draft pick.

The 7-9 also based upon a 3-3 record in the division. There’s the chance this could be up to 9-7 or down to 6-10 depending on those games. But I think 3-3 is fair there.

I hope that my favorite team totally bombs this year. We need a great QB and a high draft pick 2014!
Can what we have do anything near what Manning did Thursday night?

If anyone thinks this team wins more than 5-6 games, needs to get their heads examined! What improvements have they made, from the 4-12 abortion team of last year? We have the same turd at QB. The O-line is still a ???? No WR’s other than DJax. The secondary hasn’t been upgraded!. The LB corps. is a joke. The front 3 have huge ???? Schemes on both sides of the ball, have been completely been overhauled! The only thing I see better, is ST’s, & the fact we have a healthy Shady! WTF are you people smoking?!?!?

LMAO. Agree 100%. The crying is pitiful. Big tough Eagles fans. It’s a rebuilding year, regardless of what the Eagles say publicly. Appreciate the fact that we don’t have to watch Reid and his same crap another year. Everyone was crying to get rid of Reid. He’s gone, now lots of people are still whining about the team. You know they were going to have to rebuild and it can’t be done over one off season, bunch of sniveling babies. Perhaps those of you who posts comments of disdain about the Eagles should look to root for another team until the Eagles become good again. Then jump back on the wagon.

BTW, don’t tell me who to root for. I root for all 4 local teams, regardless of record. I’m no bandwagon jumping fan like Songs, & some others on here. You are crying, that’s who! Exactly what were your expectations, First of all, I didn’t tell you who to root for, I said root for another team, with no specificity. Second of all I’m not waving any pom poms. Instead complaining and whining, I will give Chip an opportunity to build a winner not cry like a baby because my squad isn’t going to be what I would like for them to be this year! It’s called patienceI’m not looking to measure success with wins and losses because I know it’s going to take time to rebuild. As long as I see some cohesion and improvements over last years debacle I’ll be fine (this year). Thirdly, You can rebuild even with the same QB, i.e. Vick because it gives the offense an opportunity to get acclimated to that type of high pace offense with that type of QB. You must be guilty because you took my comments to heart. Lastly, if you can’t stomach the rebuilding process go put your head under your sheets and come back out when the Eagles have done everything you want them to to get to the bowl.

I wasn’t expecting them to be good. I expected them to do everything they could, to better this team, this off-season. Still being $20M+ under the cap, signing garbage FA’s & drafting unneeded & luxury players, in this years draft, when your DF was devoid of players in the secondary, LB corps. & front line. This years draft & FA period was loaded with talent at secondary, & we signed/ drafted NONE of them, when we were in dire straits. Vick should have NEVER been brought back, if they were truly, honest with themselves about rebuilding! It made zero sense. If you can’t understand that, you don’t know $#!t about rebuilding an NFL team. They deluded themselves, into thinking they can win! Win what exactly? Vick is not the future of this team. The draft was clusterf^#@, of epic proportions & they signed nothing but backups, health concerns, & ????? I initially commented, because of the @$$clowns on here thinking after a 4-12, with ZERO upgrades, thinking we are doubling our wins. It’s nauseating & comical! I can understand trying to be positive, especially after the past 2-3 years of trash truck juice, this cities teams have been, but try using your heads, for something other than a hat rack! You can’t handle the truth, too freaking bad!

Ok, bit what is your plan. Be the GM and tell me what’s your plan. Paulman and I have been posting about players in the up coming draft that can possibly help the Eagles. I agree, Vick is not the QB of the future, but he’s here. That’s reality. My head actually serves as an Eagles hat rack and a host for a brain that not only uses common sense but hasl ead me to be quite educated with three graduate degrees thank you very much! That’s why the dearly departed Navy dubbed me Doc!!! Dude, I sense your frustration, I think most Eagles fans are, myself included; but come down off of the Cary Williams hyper behavior attitude as it will only get you pissed off about something you have no power over anyway. That was a good, funny post. Glad, you at least understand where I’m coming from. Eagles hat rack… Dearly departed Navy…. LMMFBO!!!!
My off-season plan, that I’ve discussed many times. It was simple, reasonable, & doable-
FA- RT Eric Winston; NT Terrance Knighton; OLB Conner Barwin (only player); CB Sean Smith (better, younger, upside & cheaper than Williams); CB Derek Cox (young up-&-comer, better than Fletcher & Wiliams); Safeties Glover Quin & Laron Landry (both upgrades, to the dreck we signed.
Draft- DF, DF, DF, depth at O-line, & WR. Not a project RT at #1, a luxury TE, a rotation DT, & a stiff QB, with their 1st 4 picks! It’s too early for next years draft & FA, but we have the same issues, that could have been on the way to being corrected already.

DCAR, You and others just don’t get it….sometimes a good team makes great players. Its not always about going out and signing the most stout player in free agency…Take Nnamdi for example, he was considered the “best catch” free agent signing that year… or at least that’s how he was touted…. I don’t think anyone on here complained even myself (although I preferred Tulloch that year) But how did that turn out? Was it Nnamdi’s fault or the defensive coaches? Who know’s… Nnamdi’s gone, coaches are gone….maybe the position has been upgraded and so has the coaching staff….Eagles signed CB’s and safeties, just not big named players or stars…Don’t need a bunch of good players…I’d prefer a good team.

I think the opening 3 Games in 11 Days can be a real advantage with Kelly’s up-Tempo style of Offense, remember both the Chargers and Chiefs have to travel to Philly, so a 2-1 Start is very possible and expected on my end..
I think the Eagles win 7-8 Games in a crowded NFC East
And no the NFC East is not Overrated, most followers of the NFL have the East as the weakest Division from Top to Bottom in the NFC Conference (at least I do).. 10 Wins gets the Division Crown with only the Divisional Winner making the Playoffs.. The Wildcards will come from the South & West Divisions which have more talented Teams…

I want an owner, who doesn’t think he knows better than everyone, & thinks he’s a f^#@ing genius. I expect & want a coaching staff that aren’t failures. I expect & want a head coach, that has at least a minute of NFL experience, & doesn’t think he can reinvent the game. Where’s the talent & chemistry with this team? They were going to have to find chemistry, with anybody they signed. You see chemistry on this team? WTF, are you talking about? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Wow, why can’t someone be an eagles fan and believe this team isn’t that good? If I don’t like the defense or the QB and still am not sure about the coach I should say 12-4? I’ve always been realistic about this team this year. Yes there is a chance they are the surprise team that jumps up every year. Logically I don’t see it. I see 4-6 wins at best and a good draft pick next year. I see the defense getting better as the year goes on and at least 2 different starting qbs this year. I’m a huge birds fan but that is the reality if what I see. I don’t like a lot of what the team has done this offseason, but ill wait for the games to play out before I kill em. I’m on the record though with what I think this team is

This team has the same skill weapons that took them to the playoffs in 2010. This defense is no worse than the one in 2010 that had the offense having to win shootouts.

The STs is far superior. All this garbage about Chip reinventing the game? It was a Reid with his bogus wide 9 and hiring his o-line coach to run the D that re-inventing the game.

Chip has something to prove to you Denny? Guys are having major success in the NFL using concepts Kelly has been using for years. Harbaugh, his DC, Carroll, Kiffin, they were all getting schooled by Kelly.

People think the top minds are in the NFL, but there hasn’t been inovation at this level for years.

SanFran never runs a lot of read option. Generally only 20% to 30% of their game.

And last night they called less than that. An excellent coaching decision btw. Coming off the playoff win last year, plus all the “we’ll hit the QB every RO play” business from Matthews the past 2 weeks, the Pack were geeked to stop the RO.

Then SF didn’t call any. Kap with very traditional drop back plays the vast majority of the time.

Excellent coaching.

Obviously Kap has improved that aspect of his game over the offseason and the coaches were comfortable switching tactics to bamfoozle the GB D.

Over the long term he will slowly evolve into a pocket QB with good mobility rather than a running QB. The same with Wilson.

This is what must be done to achieve long term consistent success.

Looks like Kap (and wilson) are well on their way. Brains first. Arm second. Mobility third.

Mike Vick is still a running QB. FIrst and Formost.

He’s running first. Arm second. Brains……ummmmm…..

skayne

September 9, 2013 8:43 am

The guy who’s wrong on practically everything should stop talking about brains.

The read option has always been part of the offense, not the whole thing. The 49ers didn’t play any different then they usually play. You wouldn’t know that because when you hear read-option, you assume the Qb is running on every play.

The Packers game last year was an outlier, just Kapernick taking advantage of what is given.

LOL.

He can’t here that Skayne. 49ers played like they always play. Read option isn’t going anywhere with them. They took what the defense was giving them…the Packers were keyed in on the run, and so they lit it up in the air.

Simple.

Various media outlets:
“Kaepernick scrambled for only 22 yards on 7 carries, and the 49ers simply didn’t give the Packers the formation looks that gave Dom Capers and their entire defensive coaching staff insomnia during the offseason. ”

“Eschewing the read-option and going to more of a pocket-passing game”

From Joe Staley:
“And we did a great job of showing them we are not a read-option team.”

The read-option is part of their offense, but last night they shelved it (for the most part) I think I saw perhaps 4 traditional read-option looks all game, (with one inexplicably coming with about a minute to go in the 4th Q that got Kap hit – stupid)

Kap had 7 ‘rushes’ but by my count only 3 were designed or on purpose.

The 49ers changed their game plan from last year’s playoff game. That’s good coaching and it will bode well for Kapernick in the future.

Why you get your panties in a bunch for my saying this is just weird.

“Why you get your panties in a bunch for my saying this is just weird.”

– My panties have nothing to do with this
– The point you keep missing is that the read option was never a big part of San Frans offense. They were NEVER a “read option” team.
– Packers made it clear they were keying in on the run – and so San Fran made the adjustment
– Another game may prove to be different. Kaep may run for a lot more.
– Harbaugh believes in winning – how he does it is irrelevant. If the read option proves useful against an opponent it will be done. If it’s not it won’t simple.

tsjohnson5
tsjohnson5

The other part you keep missing is that running the option doesn’t mean your QB automatically runs…more than likely your RB is getting the call (if it’s run not pass), with the QB keeping it only if conditions are favorable.

Green Bay set out to stop the run – in all it’s iterations – no one had a good night on the ground…but focusing on the run meant the rest of the field was wide open and Packers secondary is suspect.

You can run traditional read/option looks and have the exact same effect san fran had on Packers if a team plays to stop the run the way the Packers did.

Your brain seems to only associate the r/o wtih a QB running all over the place – which isn’t what it is at all. And truthfully the THREAT of Kaep running is what kept the Packers focused on the run last night – so it still worked even when they weren’t running it.

The 49ers run a West Coast and read-option hybrid – most times they run their read-option plays out of the pistol formation.

It’s pretty easy to tell when the 49ers are not running read-option plays…the QB is not READING the DE/OLB the QB has no OPTION to keep the ball.

Some running quarterbacks are horrible – some like Kaepernick are good.

Some pocket quarterbacks are horrible – some like Manning are good.

You do realize only a handful of qbs have EVER done what Manning did against that porous Raven’s D? Most of whom played in the dark ages. Piss-poor example. Just stating you want to start over with a new qb would have been more credible. The Manning reference ruined it.

I have no idea what the fuck your comment even meant coldbrewski.

As for Manning, he has picked apart every defense in football over the years. I hardly think he made his bones feasting on weak defenses.

jakedog, we are all Eagles fans, I’m from West Philly. A place that’s truly tough (West Park) that you wouldn’t wanna necessarily hang around. I don’t think calling a woman a bitch on a computer makes you tough, just ignorant. Not cool dude.

If anyone watched the Cowboys/Giants Game last evening and doesn’t think that the NFC East is wide open, doesn’t know football
Saw tons of mistakes, blown coverages, poor tackling, poor special teams, and lots of turnovers.. Looking around a lot of NFL Games yesterday, and today’s NFL is about “Big Plays”, Execution in the Red-Zone and Creating Turnovers..
I saw very few Defenses out there yeaterday that actually stopped anyone..

If the Eagles play solid, disciplined football we should be able to beat Giants and Dallas relatively easily.

We’ll see what the Skins look like tonite.

I wouldn’t go that far TS,
If we have learned anything being Eagles Fans over the Years,
Is that the Eagles & Wins never come “Easy” for the Birds..
But if they can Turnovers,Penalties and Negative Plays.. They will have a great shot to Win Games at the end which is what you Practice & Play for..

Howie Roseman has a better chance of dunking a basketball than the Eagles making the playoffs.
