Eagles Defense Must Follow Up Chiefs Game With Another Solid Performance

VinnyCurry1The Eagles defense played very well against the Kansas Chiefs in comparison to the San Diego game, but they weren’t able to get off the field with the game on the line in the fourth quarter.  The pass rush of defense came life and registered five sacks.  They’ve got to do a better job of adjusting to plays that are successful against them early in the game.  Communication is the key.

It was good to see second-year defensive tackle Fletcher Cox use a arm over to beat the first pick in the draft, Chiefs right tackle Eric Fisher, inside then come off the corner on a pass rush and run down Alex Smith as he tried to escape.  Cox will need to get in the face of Denver quarterback Peyton Manning, if the Birds are to have any chance of pulling the upset.

Does anybody in the NFL get off on the ball like Birds second year defensive end Vinny Curry?  I don’t think so.  Two times Curry beat the Chiefs by hitting the gap inside of the offense tackle.  This young man has a great will to make it in the National Football League.

He finally got the chance to show what he could do on the football field during a real game.  The second-year pass rusher registered the first sack of his career, then a play or two after that Curry drew a holding call because he was getting off the ball like he was shot out of a cannon.  He needs to be on the field as much as possible against the Broncos.

I would like to see them use him inside at the tackle position.  His ability to get off on the snap of the ball, might allow him to get some quick pressure in the face of Manning.  The best pressure against Manning is up the middle, which will force him to move from his comfortable spot in the pocket.

Big defensive lineman Clifton Geathers made a nice stop on a running play in the first half.  He showed good quickness and athleticism in making the play. I would like to see Geathers use his 6’8 height to knock down some passes.

Safety Nate Allen had his best game of the year.  He registered a sack in the second series on third down with the Chiefs in the red zone.  Allen did a good job of tackling in the open field.  He was attacking plays which he saw developing.

Unfortunately Allen came up a step slow on what was one of the most important plays of the game.  He wasn’t aggressive enough on a 3rd and ten play with Kansas City on the five yard line.  Allen was doubling the Chiefs most effective receiver in the game, Donnie Avery, but he didn’t go up and take away the ten yard throw.  Alex Smith hadn’t thrown the ball down the field one time during the entire game.  Allen has to believe what he sees and not play careful.  From now on, Allen must attack the play and try to pick off the pass.

Outside linebacker Brandon Graham came up with a sack and he overpowered Chiefs offensive tackle Brandon Albert.  Graham should get snaps in the Broncos game because it will allow them to keep the defensive line fresh.  Blitzing Manning on regular basis isn’t a good idea.  The Birds will need to get there with their four pass rushers.

There was one play which the Birds defense had trouble with all night long.  It was a screen play to wide receiver Donnie Avery.  It’s an unusual screen, which is thrown across the line of scrimmage.  The other wide receivers pretend that they’re running routes, when they’re merely blocking for Avery.

The Eagles defensive back who is covering Avery has to alert his teammates when they line up in a formation, where they can run the route.  The defensive backs then have to fight off of the blocks and get to the ball.

Saw the Bronco’s do this same Drag Screen/Bubble Route out of a ‘Bunch Formation” quite a bit last evening, as the Chargers did also with Eddie Royal..

I been having nightmares of Avery catching passes’ across the middle, Charles catching passes out of the backfield, and Alex Smith running for key 1st downs. That’s all the did all night.

What was it?

32 of 37 (86%) for 374 3 tds 0 ints and 0 rushes

Will we ever see a stat line like that from an Eagle QB?

Not going to happen in a ‘read option’ attack. And never with the former superstar at the helm.

When are you not going to write about how much you hate Vick? Oh, never.

22 of 36 for 429 yds. and 3 total tds, no picks, ring a bell?

In Skayne’s world 61% is the same as 86%

I want to watch a Qb in Eagles colours completely control a game. Just control every aspect of the offense. And not for one game every 3 years like your hero occasionally does.

I cringe thinking what the Broncos are gonna do to this Defense…Donnie Avery, Eddie Royal……….Not even in the same Ballpark as Welker Decker and Thomas…Add the TE Thomas to the mix and Oh wow…

We could pull off a miracle but who is more prone to turn over the ball, Vick or Manning. Who’s defense has at least showed up so far Eagles or Broncos. Even taking away the two Vick six’s the other way so far I don’t see this being that close. Hope we can at least score if not it could be a long long Sunday Night lol.

yea- the eagles suck because they dont have one of the greatest QB’s of all time on their team. I mean- why bother playing the game if you are not going to have a first ballot HOFer out there. sheesh.

For the other 31 teams that dont have manning, either get Brady or Rogers or just fold up shop. Good grief Charlie Brown.

For this Eagles team this week- Either find a way to stop Manning or we will have to listen to Vinnie talk about how bad Mike Vick is for not single handedly winning the game.

Now that the stupid is dealt with- here is what Im looking for…

– No more snaps of your own cup or the qb’s shoulder.
-If you are a deep safety or CB and you are in a cover 4, its your job to get out wide and push the Wr back to the inside so the other 7 guys dropping into max coverage can have a chance at bringing them down.
-If you are the qb- make the read and throw, 1/2 sacks are on you last week.
-If you are the GM- trade a pic for Byrd. We need him.
-While you are at it- trade for a starting CB too.

I want to see the Eagles run their O. Chances are, we are not winning this game so.. just do your thing. Stick to the run game and keep the D honest. On D- get to manning, he can be disrupted if your press is working and you get to him early and often.

Misinterpret again twit.

I said it would be nice to, for once, get to experience what a lot of other teams have been able to witness.

Yes….I’d like to see the Birds with a hof QB. Especially in the 21st century when every rule has been bent in the favour of the pocket passer. Yes I would like someone that can take advantage of that. And no, you cannot win in today’s NFL without one of them.

Like the saints with 3 years of Brees ripping apart the league and winning SBs
Or the Pack getting with Rodgers
Or Pats with Brady
Or SF with Montana
Or with Young
Or Indy with Manning
Or Indy again now with Luck
Or Dallas with Staubach
Or with Aikman
Or Stl with Warner…

Or on and on…..

Just a guy that you know, just know is going to put up 68% 4500 yrds and 30tds and go 11-5 every year for 5 years and compete for the SB and win one.

We sorta, kinda had that with Donnie, though deep down we always knew there was a 4th Q disaster waiting around the corner…..

Every game played with a QB who will never, ever, ever reach that plateau is a waste of time in 2013.

just want to point out that you have 5 current guys on this list. so out of 32 teams there are 27 other teams that should just fold up shop I guess. Or… they can play their backups in hopes that their height will be better.

Round and round we go Vinnie…. maybe the next coach will buy what you are selling. Thankfully this one does not.

The qb is not the long term answer… but he is not the short term problem either. So,,, time to get on board or…. ramble on without purpose as usual.

“he’s not the short term problem”

This isn’t a “short term” team. Its a “long term” fix.

So lets instead roll the Stevo way. Vick for another season or two. Because he’s not the “problem” Then maybe a year with Palmer after that. Maybe Rothlessburg or someone else who’s in his fading 30s. They’re about the same. Then we can pick up….I dunno, maybe ELi when he’s 34 or 35 for a couple years. Then roll with…hmmmm, who will be a 33 year old declining wb by then….

None of them will be “short term problems”. I mean we won’t win a championship with any of them either, but it won’t be their fault!

I’m sure they’d each be able to drag this team around to 7-9, or even 8-8 for the next half decade or so.

Great idea. The Stevo way….the QB is not good enough to win….everyone knows this….we may have a younger talent with potential, but who cares…..we’re only rolling ‘short term’!!!!

The only way the only way this team moves forward is by developing a young QB. Every single game with the old man scrambling around is a loss for not finding out whether or not the QB of the future is on the roster right now.

And if he isn’t…then its pick another qb with a top 5 pick.

Why this concept is so hard for you to grasp is actually kind of amusing.

(it was 6 teams btw) but if you’d like

Or Denver with Elway
Or Denver with Manning
Or Bills with Kelly (never won one, but at leat there every year)
Or Miami with Marino
or even now Seattle with Wilson (looks that way anyway)

what am I up to off the top of my head?

Each and every one of those fanbases just going in to the year knowing they have one of the top 3 qbs in the league for 5 years every year.

The Eagles have never, in my lifetime had that. Sure we’ve had a couple of the top 3 most ‘exciting’ QBs ever, but then never win anything when it counts, because football is about consistency and execution.

Those fanbases got to watch that….it’d be nice to watch that in Eagles’ green. And if, as you say, this coach isn’t interested in finding and developing that guy, because it isn’t a ‘problem’ right now. Than that guy is an idiot.

Hockey is a team game, but you cannot win without a top goalie. Baseball is a team game, but you better have a closer. And football is a team game, but you cannot win a championship without a top QB.

No Denver All Pro OT Ryan Clady -a nobody named Chris Clark lining up at left tackle; lets hope he doesn’t pull a King Dunlap on Trent Cole this week.
sidenote: Brandon Graham was the Broncos draft position that the Eagles used in a trade up — does Graham have any chip on his shoulder?

Antonio Gates and a KC nobody named Sean McGrath abused the Eagles D along with Eddie Royal and Donnie Avery —
Peyton Manning is a touchdown throwing machine this year, Nate Allen and Patrick Chung both have to set aside the $50,000 fine money and take one for the team and do some head hunting ( it is the only chance)

The Eagles get Denver on a short week, coming off a divisional win, and heading in to a bigger game at Dallas thefollowing week.

So its a bit of a donut for Denver. They might be a bit sluggish at the start of the game, and that gives the Birds a shot…..though the reality is they’re going to score 35+ points……so….despite what Stevo likes to mistakenly preach about team this and team that, Vick is going to have to throw for 350 and 3 tds with max 1 int to keep up….and I don’t think that’s going to happen in Mile High.

Oh please.

Whining about someone squelching on a bet is even less manly than squelching.

Mommy he didn’t pay up whah…. BS either be a thug and break his limbs or shut up and realize that you can not hurt someone on a message board so bets on here are really STUPID exercises in futility.

Not to mention that Vinnie has more sense of what PRO football is about (It’s a Business) than most of you will ever get.

So Real and Cold go pickle your brains with alcohol and keep it classy. Stevo I expected better from you about this whole thing.

Vinnie = Consistent
Regal = Consistent

Some other dudes were all pissed that I said to pump the breaks after the skins game- Well now you all see why.

We are likely to have Peyton put up 8 TD’s against us just to say welcome to the NFL Chip!

How about you mind your business!
Regal, you’re a clown along with your significant other Vinne. Regardless on a message board or not…Two men, at least I thought, typed words out agreeing to a bet…words on paper/internet would hold up in court much better than a verbal agreement…Classy? I will not keep it classy when it comes to a mtf who basically owes me money. If you think its ok for a man to go back on his word, then that says a lot about you as well.
