Kelly Makes Adjustment As Eagles Running Game Shines At The Right Time

LeSeanMcCoy1One of the keys to the Eagles win over the Packers was the way they got the best of Green Bay on the ground, especially in the second half.  LeSean McCoy had another big day running the football as he totaled 155 yards on 25 carries.  The Birds totaled 204 yards on the ground as Nick Foles was able to gain 38 yards on 8 scampers.

Chip Kelly made an adjustment to the Packers defense stunting away from where McCoy was lined up.  Nick Foles had him switch from one-side to the other just before the snap.  Numerous times especially in the second half, you saw McCoy shift from one side of Foles to the other, just before taking the handoff.

I had noticed that the Eagles would always run the ball away from where McCoy lined up.  It didn’t matter whether it was a inside zone play or outside zone play, McCoy would always get the ball going across to the other side of the center.  Green Bay defensive coordinator Dom Capers had picked that up.

At first Kelly tried to cross them up with the quick pitch to the side McCoy was lined up on, but that didn’t work too well.  His next solution was lining McCoy to one side of Foles as he called the signals, then a second or two before they snapped the ball, McCoy would change to the other side.

It crossed up the Green Bay defensive line and allowed the Eagles offensive line to start opening huge holes for McCoy.  It made the difference in the second half because the Packers couldn’t stop the Birds ground game.

The Packers running game started out strong in the first half with Eddie Lacy and James Starks getting the best of the Birds defensive front, but things changed in the second half.  The Philadelphia defense tightened up and Eagles offensive line wore down the Packers defense.  Eagles middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans had an especially strong game, which means the defensive line in front of him was doing a good job of keeping him free.

The type of adjustment by Kelly versus the stunting to stop McCoy, has been part of his first year of football education in the National Football League.  Everything is a level or two above what he saw on the college level.  Defenses wouldn’t make the quick adjustment in college, but in the NFL they make adjustments immediately.   Throughout the first ten games, Kelly has made timely adjustments and at other times he has failed to make adjustments.  This is part of his NFL education.

Kelly does a great job of isolating different areas of the opposing defense.  He will spread out the wide receivers and run a bubble screen look against opposing defenses while handing the ball off to McCoy to isolate the run defense.  The pass defenders don’t come to help the running play, when they trying to defeat a block outside on what could be a bubble screen.

In the same way, the pass rushers aren’t so quick to rush the passer when they think they’re being run blocked.

With the game on the line the Eagles running game ran out the clock on the drive that started with over nine minutes on it.  They did not allow the Packers offense back on the field.

That’s winning football and everybody on the offensive side of the ball must given credit for it.

I talked to rookie Lane Johnson after the game and he felt relieved that the Birds were able to overcome his mistake of moving before the ball was snapped.  Nick Foles completed a third down screen pass to of all people James Casey, who avoided a tackler and got the first down.

They made it look easy after that with the offensive line dominating upfront and the Birds running backs taking advantage of it.  The game ended with the Foles doing a couple of kneel-downs.

Wait a minute. I thought that the Eagles couldn’t possibly have a running game without an athletic quarterback.

An Athletic, strong armed QB maximizes Chip Kelly’s offense, but what Kelly has shown is that he is a very good coach! He works with whatever he’s got. Has G Cobb’s article shows here…Kelly is adept at finding ways to take advantage of the defense. However, the Eagles should go out and get the best players for his system..and that includes the QB!

7tds isn’t “maximizing the offense” enough for you?

You get the most athletic strongest armed QB in here and still you’ll never see that again numbnuts.

You just saw the most maximum of the maximizing of Kelly’s offense.

And yet you hate it, cause the Qb wasn’t running around. Get lost hater! (always wanted to say that!!)

vinniethevictim do you ever watch the games or do you just read the stats afterwards? I would have taken one or two of those TD’s against Dallas where the cornerbacks weren’t falling down and there was a little pressure on…I know you want the stiff, slow QB…but sorry…Foles is no Tom Brady
Again, we saw the subtle adjustment that Kelly made against GB..he saw those wounded ducks Foles threw up and promptly said…”Shady-take over”
We will find out about Foles…he may prove me wrong…but I think the kid is not a fit for Kelly! Simple as that!

An Athletic, strong armed QB maximizes Chip Kelly’s offense

Really? Who has played in Chip Kelly’s offense that possessed above average arm strength?

– Dennis Dixon – Just functional, far weaker than Foles.
– Darron Thomas – Below average arm strength.
– Jeremiah Masoli – Below average arm strength.
– Marcus Mariota – Good arm strength – similar to Foles

I swear sometimes you talk like you are Chip Kelly’s best friend.

I heard Kelly say he will adjust to any style quarterback. Looking at Foles success, I believe him. Plus, he drafted a pocket quarterback.

I think Kelly is smart enough to know that the read/option is never going to be a staple in the NFL. So, he will adjust to what works.

I think you post are mostly wishful thinking, koolbreeze

McCoy a few yards away from a 1000.
Brutal game last week health wise. A lot of injuries on both sides with each team trying to dominate the line of scrimmage with the running game.

Was awesome to see them close out the game that way. Happened too many times to them, so it was nice to see them do it someone else.

I posted 3 weeks ago that once Foles puts a couple good passing games together, the run O will open right back up.

All young QBs get crowded at the line. The run game suffers. If the QB is worth his salt, passes get completed, and the Ds back off again.

The run game will be fine.

Vinnie please stop describing Vick without saying his name!!! Let the shit go dude DAMN!!! So goddamn annoying. It’s about Foles and him playing well and the eagles having a homegrown QB talent since McNabb. Arguing about dumb stuff. And you are a bet breaker any damn way. You not suppose to be posting. But anyway. GO EAGLES!!! No team Foles no team Vick. TEAM EAGLES

Buddy. Get those eyes checked. You’ve gone beyond reading between the lines. Haven’t mentioned the former superstar at all today. Why would I? His time is mercifully done.

I just obliterated Kooltwits moronic post about “maximizing” the offense, and then mentioned that I knew the run game would come back as soon as Foles had a couple good passing games (which he did).

On the other thread I wrote that the development of a young QB is a time for hope and optimism.

MV is done. And the only time I’ll mention him is some dimtwit like yourself posts some unsubstantiated crap about ‘winning now’ or the clearly grasping at straws……’But in preseason!!!!” (which I’m unbelievably still reading BTW)

Ed Reed is toast and at the end of a great Career
Troy Polamalu is toast and at the end of the great Career
Jarius Byrd is Damaged Goods
CB Charles Tillman is damaged goods and plus side of 30 and hurt again..(2 of his last 3 Seasons he has missed significant time
Safety Donte Whitner is on the wrong side of 30

Point is, All of these above Players, who have had great Careers are past their Prime’s and do not fit for the Eagles moving forward
Draft and Coach the younf Players up.. It’s a young man’s game ..

Also, the Phils are gonna sign 36 year old Marlon Byrd and hope that his fountain of youth didn’t dry up. 2 years 16 mil. Guess that solves all of the OF problems.

Kelly will continue to figure out how to adjust as this is no longer Oregon where he always had mismatches in personnel

Teams now cannot stuff the box as foles has demonstrated he can and will throw deep, so expect more adjustments to be made, cooper has established himself as a deep threat and will have the attention of the safeties

This is going to be interesting going forward, the team as a unit is getting better, more consistent, and the attitude of the team is great

Looking forward to this Sunday

agree 100%. Im bummed about Wolfe getting hurt… wanted to see if he could be apart of the core. Seems more like a 3rd safety to me but I wanted to see as much of him as possible before the year is out.

Loved watching them end the game the way they did. Chip ate that clock…. we havent really seen much of that.

Hey dcarr I know reed is a safety and Casey is a lb I said get rid of Casey to open a roster spot for reed Casey does nothing for this team and I think reed could bring more to the team than him Casey Matthews should’ve been cut after the preseason I rather see reed play than Chung he adds depth so dcarr think on that and Chung brings more that Matthews so Matthews is the odd man out

If Eagles were to bring a Safety in, Kurt Coleman would be the one Released
Eagles are a little thin at LB with Kendricks injury leaving (Barwin,Ryans,Cole,
,Goode,McCoy as Back-ups.. Matthews stays for his Versatility and Special Teams play..
Eagles currently have 5 Safeties which is 1 more than most Teams carry(Allen,Chung,Anderson,Coleman along with Wolfe) so if Wolfe gets placed on IR, they still have depth at Safety..

Speaking of depth, when was the last time we could say that if a guy gets hurt, were comfortable with whoever his replacement is? Its been a loooong time. Its not only a testament to the players but its also a testament to this outstanding coaching staff that was assembled. They are all hungry, and the players are hungry. We figured that the offense would be good, but this defense is playing lights out. Regardless of who’s on the field for them, they are so well coached that they’re rarely if ever are out of position. They swarm around the ball, I’m talking 3-6 guys around the ball. They seem to know where the ball is going and that stems from intense film study and great coaching. They’re by no means a finished product but man they’re looking good and seem to be gaining steam heading into the 2nd half of the season (like I said they would). But again, the comfort level I have with the backups at any position is very high, a 9 or 10..

About the D….

There is no doubt that they are looking better….. giving up half of what they were at the start of the season but… lets relax Hart about the talent and the depth.

This D still cant sniff the QB enough.
This team still has no starters at FS or SS
This D still needs 1 starting CB IMO to be worth much… although the 2 we have now have played better than expected.

And… this D has not had to play many good QB’s the last few weeks.
THAT is NOT to take anything away from them… but…. they are not ” Lights out”.

Its going to take time but guys like Cox, Barwin and Kendrix are going to be the core of this team for a while. Ryans has impressed… although he has clearly lost a step and SOMETIMES it shows.

i for 1 would have no problem with Ed Reed coming in. The reason- outside of Wolfe, we have no young guys that just need time on the field.

Ryans lost a step? Where is this coming from? Ryans has been one of the best MLBs in the league this year. Remember, it takes a full year for a guy to heal from a ACL injury. Its not a quick recovery type of injury. So it took time, and now Ryans is showing that its better to be patient and heal. Hes looking like his ol probowl self, he hasn’t lost a step, if anything hes gained a step. If he remains healthy, he ll be in the probowl..

Like I said in my post, this defense is by no mean a finished product but check out the ppg that they’ve been giving up for about 6 weeks now. This defense seems to have turned the corner. I for one mentioned last week on here that they need to face a premier QB, and ARod would have been a great test for them. RG3 may be that test for them is week, he’s healthier now and more mobile then he was in the week one thrashing, so we’ll see.. But yes they need to add more players in the off season but we’ll worry about that then. Let’s enjoy the process of them installing this new defense and watching the progression of these players both young and older..

Ryan’s is having his best Seadon since about 2009 and will get mentioned for Pro-Bowl but the NFC is stacked at that Position with
Kuechley, Willis , Lee & KJ Wright , all more likely to get the nod..
(Sean Lee is probably out of the running being injured now)

It takes time for a safety to learn the scheme and be productive. It takes a healthy Body to make plays.

The Eagles do not have the time and Ed Reed does not have the body!
