Thoughts From Eagles-Lions

eaglessnowEagles Show Great Character In Difficult Win

This might have been the most impressed I’ve been with the Eagles all season.

The Eagles overcame a double-digit second half deficit in terrible playing conditions to earn a critical victory over the Detroit Lions.

For awhile, it looked as though the Eagles were destined to lose a frustrating, low-scoring affair. The offense had trouble adjusting to the weather, and an early interception from Nick Foles set up an eight-point Detroit advantage. Following a punt return for a touchdown by the Lions, it seemed as though 14 points might be enough for the Lions to win.

However, Chip Kelly and the Eagles didn’t fold. They made adjustments. They toughened up. They toughened up and got stronger as the game went on.

After failing to score any fourth quarter points over the last few weeks, the Eagles dropped 28 in a come-from-behind effort today. They not only came from behind, but they also kept their foot on the gas pedal and scored enough to put the Lions away.

McCoy And The Offensive Line Takes Over

LeSean McCoy delivered a dominant performance, rushing for over 200 yards and two touchdowns.

McCoy ripped off two long touchdowns runs of 40 and 57 yards. Once he got his footing under him in the second half, he began to run hard and with confidence, and he really took over this game. The Lions, who came into the game with one of the top rushing defenses, had no answer for McCoy in the second half.

McCoy set a new franchise record for rushing yards in a single game, eclipsing the 205 yard mark set by Steve Van Buren back in 1949.

McCoy was helped out a great deal by his offensive line. The interior of the line, Jason Kelce, Evan Mathis, and Todd Herremans did a tremendous job clearing out the Detroit defensive line and created big lanes for LeSean to accelerate through.

Foles Bounces Back From Early Adversity

We saw Nick Foles pass another test with flying colors today.

After causing his team to fall behind with an early interception, Nick Foles was charged with guiding his team from behind in very difficult circumstances, and he succeeded.

After struggling early, Foles finished the game with 179 yards and a touchdown on 10 completions. He could have had a second touchdown if Brent Celek hadn’t opted to slide before the goalline. Not impressive numbers on paper, but Foles was able to keep his cool, deliver some big throws, and ultimately he adjusted very well to the circumstances.

Offense

  • Tremendous game by Riley Cooper. He made some big plays and difficult catches today. Cooper got some separation and made a huge catch to pick up 44 yards and help get the Eagles back in the game. Cooper later made a tight grab for the two-point conversion.
  • Great awareness by DeSean Jackson, who was at the right place at the right time on his touchdown reception in the third quarter. Foles had thrown a pass intended for Riley Cooper that sailed over Cooper, but Jackson was waiting in the back of the endzone to save the play.
  • Chris Polk got involved offensively for the first time since Week 5. Polk picked up 50 yards and a touchdown on four carries, and iced the game with a 38-yard touchdown run.
  • Brad Smith had a nice run on a 13-yard reception. Smith caught a short pass, made a nice stiff arm, and should have drawn a flag for a horsecollar tackle.

Defense

  • The Eagles’ defense was able to keep the team in the game by coming up with two redzone turnovers early in the game. They forced two fumbles from former Eagle Joique Bell, keeping the game tied at 0-0 early. The defense was only on the field for eight of Detroit’s points, the rest game from special teams scores.
  • Mychal Kendricks made a nice play to break up a pass in the second quarter. Kendricks jumped a route, and was able to make it over in time to knock the ball away.
  • Connor Barwin led the team with six tackles, and also forced a fumble.
  • Cedric Thornton forced the second fumble, and also picked up four stops.
  • Bennie Logan was in on four tackles, and also blocked an extra point attempt.
  • Nate Allen recovered a fumbled snap by Matt Stafford in the fourth quarter that helped seal the game.

Special Teams

  • Donnie Jones continues to come up huge for this team. To punt the ball as effectively as he did in these conditions is really remarkable.
  • The punt coverage unit gave up a back-breaking punt return for a touchdown to Jeremy Ross in the third quarter. Ross burned the Eagles in fourth quarter for a kick return for a touchdown on another breakdown by the coverage unit.

Final Thoughts

This is a game that we’ll remember for a long time.

Depending on how the rest of the season plays out, we could look back at this one as a defining moment for this team.

The quality of play that we’re seeing right now is a level that hasn’t been seen since the height of the Reid era in the early 2000’s.

You can’t help but be impressed with how this team has come together and how they’ve continued to grow week to week.

With Week 17′s match against the Dallas Cowboys shaping up to be a showdown for the division, Denny Basens and Jeff Kolsky are planning to get a group together to watch the game at XFINITY Live, and we would like to extend invitations to any and all readers of GCobb.com to come out and join us. We sincerely appreciate all who read, comment, and make this website great, and we’d love the opportunity to meet some of the readers and experience a great game together.

Eagles 31
Lions 20
That was my prediction in one of my most recent post on the Pregame thoughts article. I’m only 20 years old, and have been an Eagles fan since the age of 6-7. I have followed this team year n and out since I have been born, and I gotta say that this game will go down in history. Def. one of the best, hard fought games in recent Eagles history. Lesean McCoy, Nick Foles, Djax and this defense overcame so much adversity which speaks high volumes on how different this team is this season, compared to previous years. We never give up and pout, we continue to fight and play our game. Chip has got these boys playing, along with Billy Defense and his staff. As I had stated previously, I knew we were going to force turnovers on this Lions team especially in these conditions, and with them being on the road dome team. This team is good at not allowing teams to get into the endzone. The fight and fight some more who in the end, might give up a lot of yards, but we fight like hell in not folding up.

GREAT WIN. Minnesota Next week which should be another W. Being in the dome will help us out next week now that were not playing in bad conditions.

It’s been so long, I bet most Philadelphians didn’t even recognize it.

For the first time in years, our head coach made an in-game adjustment and “out-coached” the opponent.

Reid NEVER did that!

Agree 100% with drummer. Reid would continue to do the same thing in the second half for a demoralizing loss. Clearly Kelly and Co. We’re able to out coach the opponent and dominate a very good team. Game balls to the coaches. Waited a long time to see us come out of halftime and change the game around completely.

Her Denny, how bout a little something more on Chip then your little (he made the adjustments). Today it was all about coaching! The man saw that his plan wasn’t working in the first half and totally changed his plan to something nobody thought we could do, you keep stating the obvious, I really think your still so mad that Reid is gone that you just can’t do anything more then throw in a, oh and the coach did a good job, the last time I remember you writing something about a coach it was about how good the coach from the Chargers was doing, bottom line is this, it was our coaching and his adjustments that gave us the victory today, something Reid could never do.

Denny, I will say you were definitely hard on Chip early on, I remember going back n forth with u numerous times about him, I’m glad u finally came around, yes the players stepped up but it had a lot to do with Chip making those adjustments and sticking to them, it’s such a pleasure to see a coach go into halftime and make adjustments, does anyone realize we haven’t seen that on this team in 14 years? I believe we’re going to run the table the rest of the way and be one of the most scariest teams in the playoffs, as of right now, were the second best team in the NFC.

Foles was the better quarterback today, Stafford played like I thought he would (sloppy). 2nd week in a row Bill Davis’ defense was able to limit the damage of a great receiver. Special Teams coverage was the only downside.

This was an instant classic with a career day from Shady and the game of the year and in a few years from this offensive line. Chip made all of the proper adjustments and received input from his players early on (Cary Williams in particular on not having the WRs go on routes that cause them to cut a lot) and he adjusted accordingly. I love this offense, I love this defense that are now opening eyes across the league as a defense that means business. The Birds held Calvin Johnson to 49 yards 0 tds. Lockdown shutdown. Yes Reggie Bush didn’t play but who cares, this time of year its about whos healthy and whos clicking as a team. Chip called one heck of a game yes, but Billy Davis and Jerry Azzinaro did a great great job once again..

Foles turned it around after the snow fall subsided a bit and they got acclimated to the conditions. He was challenged early, but he answered the challenge. It was good that Chip didn’t get impulsive and yank him for Vick, you gotta let him play thru it and they did that..

Yes 1 game at a time, but this game had a playoff feel to it. We could see this team again down the road because the Lions are a playoff caliber team in their own right. But what a game, I’m proud to be a Eagles fan.. a game we ll be talking about for years to come and could set up a deep deep run in the playoffs..

Hey, did Calvin Johnson play today? That’s three big time receivers we shut down in the last two weeks, Fitzgerald, Floyd and Johnson. And the D only gave up one TD today and lets not forget that we handled the clock in the 4th very good.

It’s a game of adjustments, and the Eagles adjusted.

I saw part of the 3rd, and the complete 4th quarter and the game got an A for entertainment value…It was a treat to see a snow covered field in an era of domes.

Have to give a shout out to Riley Cooper who couldn’t make a pkay in the first half only to cone back with sone big cathches in the 2nd half when a lot of players would get down on themselves, D-Jax had nice Catches, 1 big one to keep a scoring drive alive on a 3rd and long that seemed to pump him and offense up and then done great blocking down field by Avant & Cooper on some of the long runs by McCoy & Polk
Just a great Team win overall

Vick and his entropy age are clearly in the rear-view mirror..
Foles is clearly the unquestioned Leader of this Offense..
Now Vick’s Role becomes different as he’s stepped up to be a supportive a Teammate and that’s be an experienced back up to remain focus and ready if needed and to help out in any way that he can which he has shown to be able to do thus far..

This was Nick Foles best game as an Eagle…no doubt in my mind. Team is down, pressure game, terrible conditions, Detroit was stopping the run…the Quarterback had to make some plays–Foles got it done. Inspired…the Offensive Line then punched Detroit in the mouth…and Shady showed why he is the best running back in the League.

I think Vick would have been a better option today. He would have been able to run the ball better and kept the Lions on their toes. And he would have done a better job taking care of the ball and not committing turnovers. Oh wait…. nevermind 😛

Obviously I’m joking. One of the greatest games I’ve ever watched. And big ups to Foles.Did a great job keeping his poise out there.

The Eagles O line was beastly across the board; from Lane Johnson across to Jason Peters, held the Lions D line and Linebackers in check. Head to head…rookie to rookie, Lane Johnson handled Ziggy Ansah when matched up. The tape says it all.

The Pass that really got him going was a 12-15 Yard out caught by D-Jax on a 3rd and 10 play, then he settled in, tossed a nice deep ball that Cooper adjusted too and made a nice grab, then next drive aligned a side-arm laser to Celek with LB all over him and then then it was Katy by the barn door after that… I would take Foles over 85% of the NFL’s QB and definitely anyone in next years Draft Class.. he’s Yping, High Foitball IQ, a Keader whose arm has gotten much stronger since his Rookie Season who should only get better and better so the talk anoint needing to finding a franchise QB is a moot one for me, for the Eagles gave one in Nick Fokes right now and is light years ahead of any a Rookie in next years Deaft Class..
Add Defensive Seconday/LB & OL with WR Deoth and this steam should Dominate the NFC East for the next 5 Years as the Giants/Redskins rebuild
And the Cowboys have a lot of Sskary-Cap issues to address
Plus another likely Defensive Sraff/System
To cganges fain next Season

I have to also give a shoutout to myself for reporting Shanahan’s demise all year long.. He, GM Bruce Allen, Owner Snyder have not been on the same page since all off-season..
It started with again GM Allen Decision to make the big deal to acquire RG3 and give up all those a Draft Picks against Shannahan’s wishes to begin with then to anoint him as the Starter which anyone who knows how Shannahan operates goes directly against his grain and especially at QB where Shanahan is very anal and demanding on how his QB’s play
coach Shanahan is a control freak and has felt since last season that his control has been upsurges by Allen, and then RG3, who as Owner Dan Snyder is Ga-Ga with .. This train wreck is no surprise for anyone following the barbs that have gone back and forth since last off-season about RG3’s Injury, rehab Plan, preseason schedule and about whether RG3 should even start this Season on the Active Roster
He is good as gone and it may happen this evening and surely once the Season is over but I have stated the growing rift between Shanahan, RG3, GM Allen and Owner Snyder since the Summer
Adios Mike Shanahan, his Son and entire Staff once the Season ends

Very good points, Mr. Paulman, and many of us have been confident of Foles’ ability to be a top notch NFL QB from the beginning.

Let’s also give credit to both the OF and DE lines, as playoff teams win the battle at the line of scrimmage.

Kudos to LeSean McCoy, who is a monster, and also to Kelly for using RBs Brown and Polk on meaningful downs in the 4th quarter…How refreshing to have a coach who believes in the running game.

Once the Birds got acclimated to the conditions it was all over…Without the punt and kickoff returns by the Lions, it would have been a rout.

Always remember that the Offensive line prefers to run block because then they are in an attacking mode, instead of dropping back.

Same here GMCliff, I have liked Foles from the Pre-Draft of 2012 as most of you already know”
What I was not sure about was that HC Kelly, would give Foles a real opportunitiy to play and to run his System.. which is why I thought the Eagles would potentially try to move/trade him last Summer..
I am happy they gave him a chance to compete, to learn and to improve and make some adjustments to their Game Plans that take advantage of Foles Skill Set

I as well Paul, but as you know I took it on the chin for stating that we don’t need a QB, because most on here who think they know what they are talking about, felt that Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley, and Taj Boyd were better than Nick Foles, and I stated that NONE of them were better, and that we don’t need a QB high in the draft…..

That GMCliff was a nit wit – I need to hear some acknowledgement that those loud mouths were wrong, and GMCliff was right……How many are too proud to do that? Step Up….

Howie Roseman scouted Nick Foles and he and his scouts went to see Nick Foles’ at his pro day. The Eagles was the only team there. No other team bothered to show up. Howie gave his data to Ried, Ried liked him, that’s why he’s here. Cliff, I gotta call you out on this. You want your props for Nick Foles, but do not wanna give Howie his props for truly scouting, finding, and recommending him because it’s antithetical to your long standing and well known position of your opinion of Howie’s ability to evaluate talent.

Paulman first Reported about Fole’s Potential in Dec of 2011 on some of the Pre-Draft Write Up’s that Fellow Posters (GMCliff, DCar, Jake and others on here were posting/discussing at the time) This was before the Bowl Games, Senior Week/Bowl and Indy Combine leading up to the 2012 Draft
My Assessment was very clear and specific on Fole’s
Tall, Good Vision & Leadership Skills, Competitive, Smart and more Athletic than People realize, Has Good Feet (due to Basketball Background) to move around in the Pocket and the Height and Vision to see down the Field
Area’s of Need for Foles as an NFL QB
Needs to get Stronger, both his Arm and His Core, and sure up his Mechanics in his throwing motion and Footwork to get more balance resulting in a more consistent and accurate throw which are very Coachable. His Arm Strength would improve
I stated that Coach AR and MM would love this Kid for his Potential, WOrk Ethic, Smarts and that Fole’s reminded me a lot of a young Big Ben and that Fole’s was actually more polished as a QB as far as reading Defenses, going thru Progressions that Big-Ben was, when coming out of College..
I still stand by this Assesment 2 Years later

I can assure you, the Eagles had Foles on their radar well before that. Scouting departments are at least a year ahead of planning and determining players they are interested in scouting. That’s why they plan ahead to go see players they are interested in play a year in advance, against specific teams. They (scouts) just don’t watch games and decide “hey, I think I’ll go watch him play this weekend. I’m willing to bet Foles was on their radar in 2010, and they evaluated him and scouted him that year in person, and in 2011. But good work PMAN.

Wrong Eagle, Howie wasn’t part of that process of scouting, and recommending drafting him at all. Here is the real story. Many teams went to his Pro Day, the Eagles were the only ones to bring him in for a workout….Here is the source….

By Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
POSTED: December 08, 2013
One day during the 2012 offseason, Marty Mornhinweg turned on the college tape of Nick Foles and liked what he saw. So he walked down the second floor corridor at the NovaCare Complex and into Andy Reid’s office.

“I said, ‘Have you seen this Foles kid?'” Mornhinweg said recently to The Inquirer. “So he watches him, likes what he’s watching and says, ‘Where’s Doug?'”

Doug Pederson, the Eagles quarterback coach, was on the road. He was working out other quarterbacks and by coincidence was scheduled next to be in Phoenix to visit Brock Osweiler, the 6-foot-7 Arizona State quarterback.

“We’re like, shoot, let’s get him over to work out Foles instead,” Mornhinweg recalled. “So we had our people redirect Doug to Tuscon.”

If Pederson wasn’t in Arizona, who knows if the Eagles would have drafted Foles, then a senior at the University of Arizona. It’s likely they would have eventually found some time to work him out.

But it’s fascinating to think what might have not been with Foles – now playing for Chip Kelly and a new regime. He’s the hottest quarterback in the NFL and on the cusp of leading the Eagles to the playoffs for the first time in three years.

Reid, fired by the Eagles in January and now with the Chiefs, confirmed his decision to cancel the Osweiler workout for Foles, whose 4-8 senior season was marred by the coach’s midseason firing and a sieve-like offensive line.

“Smart, leader, tough – all of his offensive linemen were freshmen and he never made an excuse – and he had a great feel for the game,” Reid said of Foles. “The obvious was he could make every throw.”

Mornhinweg no longer went on the road to work out quarterbacks. The last one he spent time with before the draft was Kevin Kolb in 2007. But the offensive coordinator and Reid trusted Pederson, the former Eagles quarterback who was coached by both in Green Bay.

Again, Don’t overstate the Job Howie has done…That was all Morningwhig, Reid, and Pederson…..You don’t have to call me on that Brother, because Howie gets no credit on Foles. Paul deserves more credit than Howie.

Cliff, I read that article the day it came out, that’s Morningwheg’s story as reported by J Mac. Maybe true…I don’t know.

As far as Ziggy…he was listed at 270 at BYU in his Sr season…He’s still listed as 270 on Lions sight so he hasn’t put on much weight for the position change. I think in there system he’s better suited to go after QB, agility to defend probacks and ends may not be his forte Looking at Ansah, he made his stats across the board at BYU primarily against lesser competition, it’s been that way in the pros too. His stats, including sacks, hurries and tackles primarily has been built up against teams with struggling O lines. Against more stout competition, subaverage performances. In time, I think Ziggy will get better.
Lane Johnson over the past 5 games has continued to play increasingly better and pitched a shut out against the Lions. Head to head Ziggy could not beat Lane to get to Foles and was mauled in run game.
Connor Barwin vs Lions, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble reovery, 5 tackles, 1 hurry. That’s impact on a game. Ziggy Ansah…3 tackles, 2 solo…one assist. Not so much.

Thats my point in pasting the article Eagle, We went through those days of whose making the decisions Andy?, Banner?, Howie?

He may have had some say on some,(5-7th Rounders), who were cut, and didn’t make the team either – but Andy, more than anyone else would have say on the QB’s drafted, not Howie – Thats how we whined up with Matt Barkley – Howie doesn’t know anything about a Franchise QB.

As far as Ansah is concerned, your right, he was 270 pounds, but, a trim 270 that ran a 4.56 40 at that weight, as an OLB….He obviously bulked up, but was able to maintain his playing weight.

I’m not going to make, any conclusions on a 1 on 1 match up with Lame Johnson in a snow storm, when no one really found their footing, and dominated from the D- Line of any team, although they all made plays

N’Domokung Suh, didn’t have a great game, but I’m sure you’ll agree neither, Jason Kelce, or Todd Herramanns, are more impactful than he is to his team.

Conner Barwin? Some people see things through Rose Colored Glasses. Dallas Fans see Tony Romo the same way, and even though, he’s proven he at times is garbage – They can’t see it because they are biased in their reasoning.

I said the same thing about Jason Babin, who had 18 sacks one year (impact Right?) – many said I was crazy, because I wanted to trade him…….as it turns out GMCliff was right again. I don’t sweat any props for an average impact from Connor Barwin.

and just this point – Lame Johnson, has not played better…The Line AS A WHOLE…has played better. Stop talking as if he’s the one that makes things go, and then ignore his mishaps that have been plenty, and in the same breath say he is impact, and Pro Bowl bound in the future…..Thats Bull, and contradictory….

Ziggy Ansah, didn’t have any stats at BYU, that jumped out at anyone. He didn’t even start his first 2 years, and wasn’t supposed to start the year he was drafted.

At the Senior Bowl, he dominated Lame Johnson (fact!) His speed was too much for him. I looked a him, and I saw a weapon. No one can take his rookie season, and say he wasn’t impactful. Lame Johnson, to his credit has been relatively healthy, Ansah has played through injuries (Knee, Concussion), and still put up number that mirror Suh – who is a candidate, for Defensive player of the year –

Even if you signed a Connor Barwin, Ansah would have had more impact playing for the Eagles at OLB, – more so than a declining Trent Cole at that position. 7 sacks, is nothing to snicker at for a rookie. How many does Connor Barwin have?

I know you are going to say, he does so many other things. But, at DE, he isn’t required to cover anyone, and every defensive player gets tackles.

I watched Ziggy Ansah, cover Denard Robinson, out of the backfield at the Senior Bowl, and then run him down from behind on the next play. He had the ability to be the next Derrick Thomas, with cover ability.

Barwin has 4 sacks, Ziggy has 7, as you said sacks doesn’t tell the whole story. Ziggy, 2 sacks against TB, 2 sacks against GB, .5 sack against the rams, two more against weak O lines too. Against stouter lines he’s been shut out. Probably did blow past Johnsonm at senior bowl, keeping in mind Johnson only played 2 years @ Tackle. Just like Strahan would blow by Runyan, that changed. Johnson is getting the coaching and technique down. Anyway it’s all good. At the end of the day we are both happy the Eagles won. I’ll spar with you again during the 2014 draft as far as talent.

GMClueless – who would play right tackle if the bird’s drafted DE Ziggy Ansah? There was a major question mark concerning Jason Peters’ achilles at the time of draft which you seem to dismiss also. Trent Cole and Lane Johnson verse what would Clifford Dorsey line up at OLB and RT. You don’t seem to like Conner Barwin also so who would play that OLB? Please say Jamie Collins so we can all get a good laugh.

The Rebuilding of the Front seven including the Linebacking Corp, would have started in 2012. GMCliff’s would look like this:

DE – Sheldon Richardson
DT – Dontari Poe
DE- Vinny Curry
ILB – Bobby Wagner
ILB – Vontaze Burfict
OLB – Justin Houston
OLB – Ezekiel Ansah

And yes, if any of these players weren’t drafted, I would also draft Jamie Collins as an ILB. But, these were the players GMCliff suggested. However, the Eagles didn’t value Linebackers at that time, which was a mistake.,,,because I was correct in my evaluation of that talent….get over it E0S, AND BOW DOWN.

and those so called upgrades need to be upgraded. As bad as they were last year defensively, they are actually worse this year.

Don’t get me wrong, statistics don’t mean everything, but as admirably as they are playing, they’re still 31st overall in Total Defense. So when I say we are overachieving, it’s not with facetiousness, it’s looking at it for what it really is – They really are not that good.

For the signing of them to truly be successful, they would have to be the cure, not the bandaid, and the entire secondary has to be replaced, for the Eagles to truly be able to hang with the big boys like the Saints, 49ers, Seahawks, and Broncos……….then they will be able to reach the SuperBowl…THEN, they will be successful.

That speaks volumes for this young football team. The entire coaching staff should be applauded for it’s amazing turn around. And yes, Roseman too deserves credit for the Eagles early success. Chip Kelly was a good hire, but the only free agent brought in worth anything is Barwin, which in my opinion isn’t saying much.

There have been no “impact” draft picks. The 1 draft pick Lame Johnson, has added to the effort that was already there, and a few catches by Ertz, doesn’t make him, nor Johnson impact.

Now, as an Eagles fan, I am very happy the Birds are winning, but lets face it, we have been absolutely lucky, with how some things have fallen for us – That too speaks to our 8-5 record – no one thought realistically, in their right mind, that we would win 10 games……Nobody.

We flat out have overachieved this year. That being said, we should all enjoy the ride, but not get ahead of ourselves, think we are of the elite, and ignore the need to upgrade…We’re still 31st in overall Defense, we still need Offensive Line help, and WR’s……..Don’t overstate the Job Howie has done either…..

1.We outplay one the sorriest, and most dysfunctional teams in the league in the Redskins. (2 wins)

2.We beat a Raiders team with 7 TD’s thrown by our QB (1)
3.We beat a Green Bay Team playing with out Aaron Rodgers (1)
4.We just get by a game Cardinals Team- while playing at home (1)
5.We play our best game of the season in a snow storm..Great Win!(1) But, very lucky
6. Next week we play a lowly Vikings team – Without AP (1)

Looking at their schedule you can tell that:

Aaron Rodgers was going to be injured?

Foles was going to be in for Vick, and throw 7 TD’s in one game?

We were going to squeak by Arizona, in a game we should have lost?

We would play in a snow storm, that would stifle the true potential of both teams?…..You could see that, by looking at the schedule huh?

My point has been that – things have fallen our way – NO complaints. I am happy – but we are lucky…..

Every team, especially those who win has an element of luck, it happens every week. I don’t think anyone believes we do not need to upgrade, however, we are winning with the talent that is here. it’s not smoke and mirrors, it’s a team playing as such, believing in themselves and the system. Draft picks add to the effort, if they don’t…it’s a waste of a pick. Can’t detract from Howie’s job either. As always, I look forward to your posts bro, I like the debating and jousting. Thank you Brother, but What have they done well Ciggy?

Johnson is a sack waiting to happen, and you guys get a giism, if Ertz catches a ball. He catches 3 TD’s, for 357 yards, and to you, he is the second coming of Kellen Winslow Sr. He’s done nothing. Kenny Stills has 4TD’s, and no closer to a star, than Ertz.

When you mention the Secondary Free Agents it magnifies your rationalization. Not one of them is any good, when the team is playing well, it has a way of making weakness look admirable.

This so-called armchair hasn’t been wrong very often, and its documented like it or not – yet you ignore those results….don’t

Cliff, impacts are made on a game by game basis, Lane made an impact by not giving up any sacks against a stout D line and Linebacking corps, which includes your boy Ziggy who didn’t do much yesterday. He also mauled defenders at the point of attack and down the field on run plays. No penalties, that’s impact. Given up 2 sacks in the last 5 games. When Ansah tried to get around Johnson, he didn’t have any success. Barwin, a good FA signing makes impact plays as he did yesterday. (fumble recovery).

I disagree Eagle. “Impacts”, are made CONSISTENTLY, Year after year.

The impact that I have seen from Johnson is the overstating of his impact, and his impact on the game giving up sacks. He’s had some major mistake free games, but not half as many – negative impact games……

Say what you want, but Ansah’s impact on the Lions has been greater than Lame Johnson’s with the Eagles. I wanted Ziggy Ansah as a Rush OLB. The Lions bulked him up to play DE in a 4-3. Which is why he has been hurt, and not played in some games, so I stand by my assessment of him.

Barwins impact has been overstated as well. In my opinion, he would be better to cover TE’s better than Kendricks. That is where he can make an impact.

as for the draft like i said- i don’t watch much college FB and actually go to this site for insight from you and as much as i hate to admit it paul and car too… as good as you are with picking college players i think you all lose perspective with the actual workings of a draft and managing the roster–and i think you dont give players you didn’t like in the draft an objective view.

All of those things are fair points Ciggy.

That being said, I also think many on this site rationalize that a guy they like drafted by the Eagles, plays okay….Through their bias, they feel he’s already a borderline superstar, and ignore bad play, because they had one or two good plays, that stood out.

Thats funny too, you found it hard to say you appreciate Paul, and DCar……They are reasonably credible with their opinions about the game. There ‘s no shame in that.

But sometimes you have to look beyond the obvious. When you say I right off prospects that I don’t like, – you’re not referring to all of them, because most that I have written off have flopped. My opinion of them was more objective than you give it credit.

No, that would be Andy Reid, Joe Banner, and Howie Roseman as a NFL Front Office Team, that lost perspective with the actual workings of a draft and managing the roster…..

Howie – Of 8 picks – 3 have been cut –

– one is woefully terrible as a QB prospect, and in my opinion NOT an NFL QB,

– a special teams back up Safety, who although obviously is strictly special teams, and not a starter – some still rationalize he is the next drafted starter – Just silly

and 3 others that haven’t really done much – which is okay – But some see Pro Bowlers – I don’t think so…

and Free agents that are outright average to below average.

This team is gelling nicely, & a game like this, can do nothing but boost team unity. Shady is a beast! Foles is a good leader. Coaching making great adjustments. Defense getting better & better, every week. What a difference a year makes. Get rid of a few mutts with fleas, & a POS, scumbag coaching staff, & we have this! Could it be, that the Hindenburg, & his merry men, WERE the major problems???? Let’s hope this is a precursor of great things to come?!?!? Man, I’m so glad, that my 4-5 win prediction was wrong! >8D

BTW, kudos to Fox for their coverage. That was an awesome job superimposing the lines, markers, & yard lines, over the snow. That was cool!

Terrible coaching – great coaching

The first 1/3 of the game was some of the worst coaching/playcalling I have ever seen. No regard for the weather at all. Toss sweeps to Desean? Roll outs? Fades to the corners?

In the snow the game should be verticle, not horizontal. I was screaming for a friggin’ post. Especially because Det had no safties covering the middle of the field.

Meanwhile, detroit was moving the ball….where? Between the hashmarks!

Then….adjustments. Impressive second half. Vertical playcalling. Perfect for the snow. It was nice to see a coach make needed changes in a game.

How bout Riley cooper knocking on the door of 1000 yards. All that and the QB refused to throw to him during the first few games

I liked the Cooper draft pick because I watched him play at Florida and saw what he brings to the table. I didn’t think his game was going to translate to the NFL after last year because of his lack of production. Lo and behold, a change of QB brought out the player I saw @ Florida. Happy Riley is and continues to make plays and improve. It will be nice if Riley can get to 1000 yards and join DJax. He has asserted himself as a legitimate # 2, a nice compliment to Desean.

Refused to throw to him? some how you still find a way to make this out to be about #7…Nothing to do with Cooper’s progression as a WR, huh? or maybe his effort, huh?

Cooper was thrown to 16 times in the first 3 games, 6 total catches…22 times in the last 3 games, 9 total catches..

Avant was targeted 18 times first 3 games, targeted 7 times the last three games.

Ball may not have been thrown to Cooper as much due to Avant getting more touches, could it?

Also, do you remember the KC game, Cooper was thrown to 7 times…do you recall him getting any good separation during that game, I don’t.Or how about the WSH game, where he dropped a few passes, being thrown to 6 times…Ignorantly selective, much?

Moving on….
Stafford was sloppy but his RB was equally as sloppy fumbling two times in the red zone…Eagles defense did its job no doubt by coming up with those balls in those situations. in those conditions the blocking importance is maximized, in the passing game, only takes a DB or a WR to loose footing, for a play to be there or a play not to be there. The MVP’s of the game were the OLINE and Shady, without a doubt!

It looked like hellah fun out there!

No doubt that the first quarter play calling did not fit the conditions or how the Lions defense was playing. Having the coach recognize a failing plan and make an adjustment, it was great to see OUR coach actually COACH during a game.

I thought that one of the players that stepped up after we were down 14 points was DJax. He made some really nice plays and provided a spark when this team could have easily given up like they did last year.

I am also glad that Foles got his first interception of the season out of the way. The whole record talk was starting to be a distraction. He does a good job making decisions and avoiding turnovers, which puts his team in a good position to win. Both QB’s were having trouble with the extreem conditions yesterday, but Kelly was smart enough to realize that a North-South running game will prevail. Shadey and the OL started to take advantage of a tired defensive line of the Lions, along with the run-friendly Wide-9 and we end up making a statement in the NFC.

Get this team to the playoffs and then see what Kelly and his crew can do.

GO BIRDS!!

Good point Green. I agree that DJAX kinda brought them outta their funk. I have been a harsh critic of him in the past, but he has really brought it this season.

Big ups to the crowd too.

Dissecting this season so far serves no purpose without mentioning the obvious. Most NFL teams when having new systems inserted ,new coaches voices ,personalities meshing, trust in a neophyte college coach ,all are more factors than we as fans comprehend. All I know is we have seen growth curves on all accounts …adding to the fact, each player on both sides of the ball are selling out week after week …last year and years previous ,it’s obvious that wasn’t the case…we’ve purged the cancer and now with the youth and exuberance and winning attitude ,we are a dangerous team in year one …of chip and foles era ,that has started only to be written…breaks in football and weird bounces are as commonplace as death and taxes ….I stated yesterday and strongly feel this team ,resembled a remember the titans attitude ,balling there fists and electing shuh to be punched back in the fucking mouth…still lots of learned knowledge came from this game ,not seen on the score sheet …this is A Team with a belief ,instilled by a coach who doesn’t appear arrogant but trustworthy ..to admit it’s broken and fix it on the fly …the players did the same ,not able to create separation ,with speed ,they too made adjustments and an offensive line that was sleighing there way to a win …if AP is out we can say with almost certainty 9-5 awaits and a home game with the Bears ,and then a true character game ,playing in Jerry’s world for all the marbles ,now that’s my Santa list and damn it’s fun and I’m loving the holidays …Giant fans are green with envy ,Washington songs have lost there voice ,and Dallas has a date with destiny …11-5 and a 3 seed …it’s indeed a snowballs chance in hell…and I’m stoked.

All true Desert…all true.

We started the season with a new coach, staff and system. We started with 3 games in 11 days. Looking back there is no reason that we should not have understood that it would take some time for the players to learn a new system (on offense and defense) and for the coaches to learn the types of players that they have and their various skill levels.

Harbough did it in SF in his first year, with mostly the same staff that he had in Stanford. Kelly’s staff is brought in from all over, and ultimately needed time to gell. The defense has made huge strides since the beginning of the year. There are still personel concerns that will need to be addressed, but it appears that this staff is able to provide a system that allows even lesser players to succeed and not put the team in a bad position.

Positives all around. Let’s see how this team deals with being a favorite, and see if they avoid the old AR trap of play down to a weaker’s team level instead of just stomping them.

GO BIRDS!!

RB- Asiata. Hes the only other RB on the team i think. Toby is hurt too soo,.

QB- Matt Cassell would be my guess. Matt is best of the 3 but… not a big deal.

TE- they are deep at TE. Prolly their best position to be honest.

Not to change the subject
Anyone recall that Leap by Lions RB Joquie Bell over Eagles Nate Allen
that was one hell of a play in those conditions.. Now the easy thing is to say Nate Allen sucks and is afraid to tackle, etc, etc, but that Leap by Bell in those Conditions would have surprised and fooled most….
It was good thing for LB Barwin was chasing from behind and who didn’t give up on the play for Bell could have rumbled into the end-zone on that play..

Nice leap for sure –
too much of a homer to recognize the skill as it happened too busy confirming it was Nate Allen who just missed that tackle. After watching Gronkowski get amputated that leap might be a required skill to learn now. I was complaining last week when Bradley Fletcher was penalized for slamming a Cardinal but after seeing the Honey Badger’s knee get destroyed on like body slam from having his legs dangling in the air on a gang tackle I guess I understand it better now. I don’t want these young men to get mangled weekly.

Crazy play Pman….that hurdle was picture perfect Edwin Moses / Renaldo Nheamia (my spelling sucks) style….in 8 inches of snow no less….and landed it in full stride on an ice-like surface….crazy play. Wasn’t Bell on our practice squad a few years back?

Yes ,Renaldo Nehemiah, I remember he played a little bit for the 49ers after dominating in Terack & Field for so many years .. I believe he was mostly a Kick-Off Returner and possibly a 5th WR for the 49ers during the Bill Walsh Era
Yes Joquie Bell was on the Eagles Practice Squad and maybe even played a game or two during the 2010 or 2011 Season.. He had some nice runs & catches yesterday, but 2 critical fumbles and some drops late in the game..

Eagles zero don’t argue there are hundreds of players drafted and signed as FA every year and these guys live to disagree with all the signings in their world we should sign and draft every player they go into draft day with 50 picks unlimited budget and no one else is drafting. Armchair gm win every championship every year

Cliff the players you don’t look at objectively are eagles players that end up performing both from the draft and FA… They have come together as a team, they were looking for things in players that maybe don’t show up on the stat sheet. Mind sets etc that we as fans don’t have access to. Look at how many very high draft picks the lions have had in recent years and for whatever reason those highly touted players haven’t done anything.
Look right here in philly we put together an all star team of FA and coaches and it was a disaster.

GMCliff did the same with the Sixers as he did with the Eagles after the draft. Nerlans is a skinny stiff and Michael Carter Williams is not all that and he would have selected Dennis Schroeder. Lane Johnson sucks and Zach Ertz isn’t all that. He is predictable.

I hope not Paul, about the Sixers…Man!!! that would be disappointing….

This is one team that needs to lose because they are in desperate need of 1 of the top 3….Preferably Julius Randle

They should also trade Evan Turner, the and the rights to Nerlens Noel to try to get another #1,…..

and trade, The expiring contract of Jason Richardson, Arnett Moultre, Lavoy Allen the #1 pick coming from New Orleans in 2014, #1 in 2016, and 2018 for La Marcus Aldridge.

Then pick up DeMarcus Cousins, and Terrance Ross in Free Agency

Huh??? gmcliff, love ya bro but… Okay… where do I start… You don’t trade a Nerlins Noel who is only 18-19 yrs old and still growing and maturing. We haven’t even seen him in a Sixers uni yet. Lets see what he has before we get rid of the guy who will be manning the paint for hopefully the next 10 years. Besides, you don’t trade an athletic defensive 7ft center with sky high potential who you just traded your franchise pg for last draft…

I do agree, they have to trade Evan. But the ridiculous trade you mentioned for LaMarcus Aldridge is beyond far fetched.. Not gonna happen, never nohow. Have you noticed what their record is this year? The Blazers have the best record in the West, their 18-4 and playing great basketball. Hes the face of the franchise, hes not going anywhere. And to DeMarcus Cousins, he just signed a new 4 year extension to stay in Sacramento this past September. Though through my sources im hearing that the Kings are still shopping him and they’ll do anything in their power to improve that team and his contract isn’t a guarantee that he will remain with them..

You said you wanted Julius Randle, LaMarcus Aldridge and Demarcus Cousins. They all play the same position to be honest. Theyre all power forwards but can play the center position. But going after all of them looking to add them wouldn’t mix well, its like a log jam at one position. Wont happen..

JH,

1. Nerlen Noel, is not worth the price of admission, and has an injury that will not allow him to be the same as the player that had SOME potential….

2. Aldridge, is a free agent next year, and there are rumors he won’t resign with them, as they are far from a championship team. Face of the Franchise or not, in this league anyone other than LeBron can be had….

3. The Kings are open to trading him because, they would like to get something for him as opposed to just letting him walk…..

4. You have no sources…lol!!!!

5.They do not all play the same position. Randle can play the PF, but, he is a natural Small Forward, Aldridge, is a natural Power Forward, and Cousins is a Center.

The trade may not happen. I don’t expect any GM to think like me, including the guys on GCobb.com that don’t know Basketball Talent – Specifically the ones that praised Thomas Robinson, Jared Sullinger, Austin Rivers, and Cody Zeller last year….LOL!!! …Give me a break.

JH, My Wang, is thicker than Nerlen Noel is. He won’t be manning nothing for 10 years….What makes you think he is any good?…..I guarantee you he is Crap, and will get out-manned on the boards, although he may be a very good shot blocker – But that’s about it my friend, for Nerlens Noel….
