Eagles Add Defensive Help In Final Three Rounds

hartWith the fifth-round pick the Eagles acquired from the Texans, the Birds selected another Oregon Duck, this time from the defensive side of the ball.

Taylor Hard is a pretty big prospect is 6’6 and 281 lbs. He’s a good pass rusher, and adds more depth the linebacker position.

With their second fifth-round selection, Roseman & company took safety Ed Reynolds. Reynolds is a decent cover safety, but an inconsistent tackler. That’s going to have to change if he expects to be in play for a roster spot.

With their final selection in the seventh round, the Eagles took 333 lb nose tackle Beau Allen. He’s got great size, but he’ll have to learn to use that to his advantage.

The Philadelphia Ducks…tall, lean, and soft…get our asses kicked by physical defenses and tough offenses! smh…C- grade for this draft…a few nice prospects…Jordan Matthews is at best a No#3 receiver…we don’t have a number #1 no toughness in the middle of the line where the Saints ran it up the gut against us in the playoffs….

You know you stooges came on here last year bitching about last years draft. I think after two impressive drafts in a row the guys getting paid to pick the players should get the benefit of the doubt from you guys. Big you of all people know better. I expect the stupidity from certain people on here. Fact is some people are still but hurt over certain moves. Get over it

X, I only like Matthews, Huff and I really like Watkins, the rest were reaches to me. How they get used by the coaching staff I don’t know but Hart, Reynolds, Smith I think we could have done better and yes I have watched everyone of these guys numerous times. Allen will see playing time he was actually a good pick for round 7. I really didn’t like this draft but of course time will tell.

I agree Biggy….The draft was okay….I’d give it a C….Ed Reynolds, is an average talent at best, and Taylor Hart stinks, Chip Kelly has to come out of this Oregon – Pac 12 All Star Team Mentality…….

He never won a national Championship because, his vision of talent was never good enough – no matter how dynamic his system was.

His eye for talent was fine at Oregon. West Coast players viewed Oregon as the fall back if they couldn’t land UCLA Cal or USC. Say otherwise and you don’t understand the California recruiting process or allure of those schools. Oregon recruits the B side of talent in the Cali area and tries to recruit diamonds in rough types.

USC could go 3-10 and still end up with a top 5 recruiting class and best class in PAC 10.

It was a decent draft, not great but decent. They filled needs and got stronger and bigger. They more then made up for the loss of DMe. They got the fatty DT everyone wanted. Got a pass rusher, which if you look at the draft they would not have gotten at #42. Taylor Hart was a steal at #141, Ed Reynolds was the one bad pick they did make but hey 1 out of 7 isn’t bad. They also got a future draft pick for a bum RB. Howie also got the extra #rd rnd pick in the initial trade down when other teams were getting a 5th rnd to trade down more spots. They get a B.
The Skins get a C bc they took a 5th rnd guy with their 1st pick and they drafted a K.
The Cowboys get a C bc all of their picks except Z Martin were at least 2 round reaches.
The Giants gets a B- bc they didn’t address their biggest need….TE

Looking back at the hundreds of names people on here threw out there as being players to watch……less then 50% got drafted and less then 30% went in the first 4 rounds. Hence the people on here are “flipping burgers” and the NFL scouts and GM”s work for the NFL.

The team is better today then it was when it won the division. Not SB contenders yet but 1 more off season like the past 2 and they are right there. Chip is doing better then Saban or Spurrier ever did in this league, and they won Nat’l titles in college, so in Chip we trust!

What are you smoking? What good is scouting players if your always wrong? Maybe they would be better flipping burgers. It’s all a matter of opinions because if the guys who get paid to make these choices were right all the time, explain Tom Brady of Kurt Warner, or Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell.

Biggie who cares about Leaf Russell and those losers. We need to talk the Eagles and the past two drafts which have been all Howie and Chip. Like I said above all these guys on here have come on and said how bad the draft has been. Both drafts in retro were good to great. So I’m just wondering when all these Internet pundits will stop recycling the same comments and wait for Howie gamble and chip to show why they get paid to do this. I’m not saying don’t have an opinion what I’m saying is they been right twice maybe they know better than we do.

I didn’t like last years draft and don’t like this years either, I hope these kids get out there and perform but I’m guessing only Watkins, Matthews and Huff contribute this year and hope the UFA kicker beats out Henery. They did a GREAT job of unloading Bryce Brown let’s see how this shakes out, but my opinion is just that my opinion.

Let’s get back to football …it’s obvious ,and distressing as a die-hard Eagles fan ,that we are definitely hitching our hopes to coach ,and his familiarity with regards to his “guys”..the release of Desean ,for football reasons …the emphasis that we draft Ducks or at best PAC 12 guys ,is understood ,however we play football in the NFC east..I live in arizona now and the football is just not as snot nose grunt, like I remember at the vet..we had the ball pushed down our throats last wild card game by the saints ,and when guys ball up ,I’ll hope we get tough ass ducks ,if not ,if it quacks like a duck it’s usually a duck.im always a glass half full guy ,so I’ll reserve judgement ,but this trust in chip and howie will hopefully not get ducked up.

I disagree… just look at our WR position. Not only are our wide-outs as a whole have improved since last season (I’ll take a Maclin / Cooper / Matthews / Huff / Sproles / combo over a Jackson / Cooper / Avant / Jeff Mael combo anyday), we went away from being finesse at that position (Desean was a finesse receiver), to having big, fast, strong guys who can fight for catches across the middle and have extremely good run blocking potential.

Sam is in the NFL now, needs to get to work and rush the passer with the high motor he has displayed and play great special teams and hope to make the roster. Being gay or straight is not relevant to whether he can create pressure on the QB. I’m congratulate him for not hiding who he is as an individual and, in essence, being a pioneer in that way. The reason I was not fond of the ESPN coverage in the 7th round (the kiss didnt bother me, though I dont know why they had to replay it a million times). is that none of the other kids that got drafted were talked about. I watch the draft to learn about the players that will be new to the NFL, so when I watch the Eagles play other teams, I can just understand more. It bothered me that only Sam was talked about… I know that is not his fault or that he asked for it, but ESPN should have been a little more respectful to the other draftee’s and told us their strengths and weaknesses.

The Eagles on Saturday agreed to terms with 15 rookie free agents:

Josh Andrews, G – Oregon State, 6-2, 311
Andrews started 30 straight games for the Beavers and 32 overall. He became the starter at left guard as a sophomore in 2011 during spring practice.

Blake Annen, TE – Cincinnati, 6-4, 247
Annen caught 16 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns in 2013 and earned all-conference honors. He ran a 4.41 40 at his pro day.

Karim Barton, G – Morgan State, 6-2, 313
Named first team All-MEAC for his senior season, Barton started at right tackle for three seasons at Morgan State after transferring from College of the Canyons Junior College in 2010. He moved to the United States from Jamaica at the age of 13 after his mother passed away and attended Verdugo Hills High School in Los Angeles.

Kadron Boone, WR – LSU, 6-0, 204
Boone in four seasons with the Tigers had 611 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 51 games. As a junior, he finished second on the team in touchdown catches (four) and third in both receptions (26) and yards receiving (348).

Trey Burton, TE – Florida, 6-2, 224
As a freshman, Burton played quarterback, fullback, tight end, wide receiver and on the kick coverage teams. He became a full-time wide receiver as a senior and finished third on the team with 38 receptions for 445 yards and a touchdown.

In 50 career games for the Gators over four years, he rushed 141 times for 720 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns and had 107 receptions for 976 yards and four scores.

David Fluellen, RB – Toledo, 5-11, 224
A two-time first-team All-MAC honoree, Fluellen rushed for 3,336 yards, fourth in school history. He rushed for a team-high 1,121 yards and 10 touchdowns last season despite missing almost four games because of injuries. He was eighth in the nation in rushing yards per game (124.8) as a junior.

John Fulton, CB – Alabama, 6-0, 195
Primarily a reserve cornerback and special-teamer, Fulton played in 49 games in four years for the Crimson Tide.

Kevin Graf, T – USC, 6-6, 309
A three-year starter at USC, Graf earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors as a senior. His father lettered three years as an offensive guard and played on the Trojans’ 1972 National Championship squad. Graf’s brother Derek lettered at center for USC in 2002.

Donald Hawkins, G – Texas, 6-4, 301
Hawkins started in 24 of his 25 career games at Texas. Before joining the Longhorns, he was a NJCAA first-team All-American at Northwest Community College.

Henry Josey, RB – Missouri, 5-8, 194
Josey suffered a knee injury late in 2011 and returned last season to rush for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior, becoming just the second Mizzouri running back to post two career 1,000-yard seasons in a career.

In 2011, he recorded the fifth-best rushing season in team history by piling up 1,168 yards and nine touchdowns. At the time of the injury, he led the Big 12 in rushing and was fifth in the nation.

Wade Keliikipi, DT – Oregon, 6-2, 303
Keliikipi last season recorded 34 tackles, five tackles for a loss, two sacks and one blocked kick. In 50 career games, he had 97 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. A native of Waianea, Hawaii, he was named Hawaii’s top high school defensive tackle prospect by SuperPrep Magazine in 2009.

Daytawion Lowe, S – Oklahoma State, 5-11, 196
A three-year starter for the Cowboys, Daytawion (pronounced DAY-twahn) earned second-team All-Big 12 honors as a senior in 2013. He was second on the team with 87 tackles and also had two interceptions.

Lowe led Oklahoma State in tackles in 2012 (75) and 2011 (97) and appeared in 11 games as a true freshman in 2009. An injury forced him to red-shirt his sophomore season.

Frank Mays, DE – Florida A&M, 6-9, 291
Mays played 11 games for the Rattlers as a senior in 2013 and led the team in sacks (4.0) while ranking second in tackles for loss (10.5). In 21 career games he had 68 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Quron Pratt, WR – Rutgers, 5-11, 195
Named the team MVP in 2013, Pratt appeared in all 13 games (nine starts) as a senior. He had 32 catches for 516 yards and also was a standout on special teams; he blocked a punt and returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.

Carey Spear, K – Vanderbilt, 5-9, 194
A three-time captain and three-time All-Academic honoree at Vanderbilt, Spear hit 15 of 19 field-goal attempts as a senior and set a school single-season record with 99 points. As a junior, he was named second-team All-SEC after leading the conference in field goal percentage (83.3 percent, 20 for 24) and setting the school single-season record for field goals in a season

I have a dumb question. Why cant these Stanford kids just quit school when they are drafted? This rule that they have to miss OTAs to finish school is dumb. I just don’t see why the NCAA cant have a rule that if your drafted you can make up your school work at a later time. Obviously you cant just not go back and just go right to your teams respectively. Why are these kids penalized for going to a school that’s schedule is longer than every other school in America. Whats the big deal that 4-5 kids annually drafted out of Stanford choose to skip the last 2 months (if they want to) to give themselves a better chance to make millions and not fall behind with there respected teams. Its a dumb rule.

professors control their classrooms-
Coaches advise their students which professors to avoid, which professors not to wear athletic gear in the classroom- for every professor that will help a student athlete out because of a scheduling conflict there is a professor that will stick it to them– Stanford professors get millions in grants from silicon valley and government research grants and don’t need TV money or their opinions.

Almost 25% of all Selections
And then add in another 30 WR’s and about

the TE & LB and DT were pretty weak and not deep in this Draft
As more & more College Teams pass and pass
The DT and ILB are becoming less and less emphasized at the College Level therefore producing less experienced and talented Players
I wonder how many of the 98 Underclassmen were not Drafted
USC had 3 of them (Safety Dion Bradley , a LB and I think a OL)

Things I learned about this or things I think I know.

1.the eagles are very high on the there back up Oline men.
Seeing that they didn’t take one at all.

2. The eagles must love najaee Goode & jake knott cause with them not taking an ilb at all was the biggest shock to me.

3. Also when they say they love Bennie Logan there not lying seeing that they didn’t get one til the 7th rd

4. There in it for the long haul with shady after trading brown and having an aging sproles and injury prone Polk yes shady and foles will be the face of the offense.

5.foles is the man they have put all there faith in him with Johnny football on the board they passed and told foles he was there guy.

6.i wonder if they could’ve traded the #26 pick for dion Jordan or hell if they even tried to at all.

7.trent cole this is your last year,

8. I wonder why Brandon graham is still here.

9. This wr core barring injury will be better than last years group.

10. In reality we know anything about most of these players til atleast 2-3 yrs down the line.

Good Stuff Gloomy,
Can you get out the Trade Value Chart one last time
and give us an early 2015 Mock Draft, for old times sake.. 🙂

I agree with your Assesment about OL
& ILB where I thought we would see a player or two Drafted
I was correct that no Safety would be selected in the first 4 Rounds
This Safety Class was not as deep as many thought
Which is why they resigned Nate Allen

They have 4 Safety’s on Rostervwith NFL Experience
And had 5 CB’s also under Contract and orovaly feel
That a 2nd Year under Coach Lyght and SC Davis
That they will improve and there will definitely be Startibg Positions
In the Secondary for all Players this Summer
Though I believe it’s Jenkins/Wolff at Safety
And CB C Williams and Nolan Carroll at the outside CB
Positions with Boynkin as the Slot/Nickel Back
With Fletcher & Watkins competing as back-up
Big Competition along OLB & DE where a veteran or 2 will
Get released or traded by Summer Time..
OL has depth with Barbree,Tobin, Molk& Dennis Kelly
& Barimo ..

Leviticus 20:13: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Romans 1:25: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Romans 1:26: For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Romans 1:27: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Romans 1:28: And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Romans 1:32: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

It’s not our judgement!

Now say God is homophbic!!!!!!!

Songs unfortunately people in modern era don’t respect the lords word or the people that serve him. You have to support everything or your full of hate and ignorance. It has come to the point that following your religion and minding your business isn’t enough. You MUST support or be labeled. Fact is being gay should not be an issue. Let god deal with everyone. We are not responsible for the actions of others. That being said we have the right to support or not support without being told we are wrong for following the bible. Funny how things are nowadays. People fly planes into buildings blow up marathons and kidnap school girls by the hundreds but people are told that isn’t a religion of hate. Christians don’t support a certain lifestyle and they are called ignorant and hateful. Btw that other religion also honor kills and circumcises women and kills homosexuals. Double standard and ridiculous..

1. You don’t get to quote Leviticus without quoting ALL of Leviticous. And their some doosies in there.

2. If you’re Christian then New Testament is your book of choice. Not much on homosexuality in there. Jesus spent a lot of time talking about turning the other cheek, adultery, money lenders and the like…gays not so much.

3. Are you sin free? ‘Cause if you’re not worrying about another’s supposed sins seems a bit counterproductive doesn’t it?

Romans is the ew Testament. look again at the scriptures pasted directly from the new testament in Romans 1 that states for those who don’t want to retain God in their decisions are turned over to a reprobate mind and are worthy of death.

Forgiveness and tolerance don’t come without one first repenting from such behavior.

I accept what God accepts.

Cast the first stone then dude. If you are without sin that is.

Yes Homosexuality IS an abomination and a sin! However we are called to love people inspite of their sin.

Now that does not mean we have to hold them up as examples to follow (completely opposite). We do need to say that we are going to treat people with respect and allow them to choose God over their sin.

Players there were here last year that will either be traded or cut by the end of preseason.

1. Damion square- undersized and really doesn’t fit
2. Brandon graham – better suited for the 4-3 should’ve been traded on draft day
3. Casey Matthews- should’ve never been drafted in the first place
4. James Casey – high salary little production
5. Brent celeck- high salary and is a better blocker than receiver
6. Brad smith – they have depth now and may decide to cut ties.
7. Benn- injury prone
8. Nate Allen – they already had 5 safety’s on the roster and they just drafted 2 more. But being that he has experience in this defense he might stick.
9. Vinny curry- unless they are gonna change his spot to an olb than they might trade him. With Kruger, hart, Reynolds that may be there 2nd line due to them having size that vinny doesn’t.
10. Alex henrey- they got an kicker as an udfa already so who knows.

It’s also a Put Up or Pack Up Camp for

I don’t give a damn if he drilled a hole in a tree and humped until hemorrhage, as long as he did his job getting to the QB.

He brought this attention to himself.

Everyone know many homos black and white have played pro football since the league began, but this guy is trying to make a political statement and should be called out for it.

He’s no hero.

Where is everyone getting the idea that TE
Colt Lyerke was a 1st Rd Talent..
The guy was rated as a 7th Round Propect and didn’t even end up getting Drafted in a pretty weak TE Class..
He’s only about 6-3 and about 245lbs and would be a real stretch to play at the NFL Level.. He’s athletic as hell no doubt, but a tweener and a Pjayer without a Position and now a Playervwithout a Team..
and this is without all the off the field trouble he’s been in
With the 1 Year Suspension already given to
WR Justin Blackmon, the pending 1 Year Suspension that will probably hit Josh Gordon and possibly Aldon Smith, Teams around the NFL
Are just staying clear of Players with serious drug, alcohol or criminal charges
Against them.. The NFL is Big Business and it’s bad business for Teams,Coach’s & Teammates to end up losing Players due to off the field crap.. It’s the New NFL and the way it is,
There are 100’s of Players every Year who would die for the opportunity that some of these Players are wasting..

My olny problem is 70% of the players Kelly drafted played in the Pac 10 or played against kellys Oregon team. I cant believee all the scouts had just them. players rated high. It seems to me Kelly doesn’t need scouts he just picks players he is familiar with. It looks like Smith, Matthews and Watkins are the only 3 players he has no ties with..I sure hope there wasn’t a player the scouts recommend and he is overriding them just because they happened to have a good game vs Oregon or played for Oregon.

I understand the backlash on Marcus Smith but as many experts have pointed out, had we drafted Jordan Matthews at 26 and Marcus Smith in the 2nd, nobody would have been upset. Many of the draft grades that have come out for the Eagles have been pretty positive (B range on average). Overall, I was pleased with the draft but at the end of the day, we’ll just have to wait and see.

I give the Overall Draft a Solid “B” to “B+”
They started out with 6 Original Picks Overall and were able to end up with
7 Picks plus improve Draft Positions in Round #2 (J Matthews)
in Round #4 (J Watkins) Round #5 (T Hart) and Round #7 (B Allen)
plus get a Pick in 2015 from the BIlls in the RB Bryce Brown Deal

Here was Original Draft Lise
1st – #22
2nd – #54
3rd – #86
4th -#122
5th – #162
7th – #237

Here’s what they ended up with
1st – #26 (Drop 4 Spots back)
2nd – #42 (12 Spots up)
3rd – #86 (Stayed the same)
4th – #101 (Up 21 Spots)
5th – #141 (additional Pick from Texans)
5th – #162 (Stayed the same)
7th – #224 (Up 13 Spots)

When looking at the Value they got for moving back 4 spots in Rd 1
from #22 to #26, allowed them to get an extra 3rd (#83) which in turn allowed them to move up to #42 to Select WR J Matthews
then by Trading #83 to Texans for their #101 & #141 was genius as was the Deal with th eBills to get a 4th/5th Rounder in 2015 and swap out spots in the 7th and move up 13 Spots ..
Great work by Roseman & Co on this Draft , I don’t agree with every Selection they made, but as far as generating more Picks in better positions of most Rounds from where they started was outstanding in the way they work the Boards and sliding up and back to get more Value in their Selections

Vinnie is not Chip Kelly’s guy, He’s too small to contain the edge as a
5 Technique DE in a base scheme and he simply is not athletic enough out in space to play a stand-up OLB and have to drop in Pass-Coverages
He can rush the Passer in the 4-3 Line-up the Eagles use in obvious Passing-Situations.. Vinny Curry is not an everydown DE or OLB in a
3-4 Scheme.. Just a bad fit.. Put Curry on the Giants and he’ll get you 10-12 Sacks a Year.. He will need a big step up Camp or he will pack his bags…

They Addresed many Position’s of Need with Quality Players

Offensively
1) A Big WR Target in Jordan Matthews
2) A True Slot Receiver in Josh Huff who also excels in the Return Game
and knows Coach Kelly’s system so that he can make an impact on Day 1

Defensively
3) A True Pass-Rusher from the OLB Position in Marcus Smith
4) A very versatile & smart DB in Jaylen Watkins who can play all over whether it’s the Outside, the Slot and even some Safety
5) A true DE who can play the 5 Technique in a 3-4 Scheme in Tyler Hart
who is 6-6 280lbs and can set the edge which is critical for a 3-4 DE and also some pass-rushing ability
6) A real NT who can play the 1 Technique in their 3-4 Scheme in Beau Allen
and be that run-stuffer, high energy plug in the middle at 6-3 330lbs (fans are going to love this guy)
7) Also Added a Quality Safety and another smart Player in Ed Reynolds from a Winning Program in Stanford and could be a real find for Special Teams and a understudy to Jenkins,Wolff & Allen under Coach Todd Lyght and be groomed as a future Starter at Safety or at least a quality Back-up and Special Teamer

I like this Draft more and more as time goes by

JH what did they address? Hart, Reynolds and Smith are all reaches now you are correct when you say let’s see them play first but in my opinion you have 3 definite guys who’ll see the field Matthews, Huff and Watkins, 2 guys Smith and Allen who might get game action and 2 Reynolds and Hart who will struggle to make the roster. Come on Big. Thats like saying an assistant coach doesnt bring his guys in if he gets a main gig on a new team. It always happens and can’t be disputed. Rex Ryan brought any former Raven up north to New York when he got hired.

If anything all the Oregon players just means he has familiarity which actually is a good thing. We can argue if he is going to biased or not…of course that could be a problem. However if Huff gets plug and played into the offense and is a playmaker is there anything wrong with that.

Lot of fans just belly aching and having revisionist history. Last year Kelly should have done everything in the world to get us Kiko Alonzo. Kid is an absolute stud….would you not want him because he played for Oregon? What if it was Marcus Marriota?

You think Pete Carrol is regretting drafting Sherman because he played at Stanford while he was at USC?

Ed Reynolds was actually projected to go between rounds 2-3. The whole thing with Smith was that washington was going to take him with their first pick at # 34 so the eagles had to take him, they liked him more than lawrence, Attaochu and Ealy. I think Hart was a reach. What disturbed me about that pick was chip wanted to take him in the 3rd and Howie said no and assured chip he would be there in the 5th. I think Smith is going to be a good player for us.

Not addressing the OG position at all this off-season concerned me. Before the draft, David Yankey was considered at least a second round talent. Paulman had him gone before we picked at 54. He was still sitting there in third and fourth round. I would have taken him over Huff or Watkins. Am I the only guy that thinks Herremans sucks and is a liability in pass protection???? I don’t want him playing another full season here as a starter!

On the poitive side, I thought we did an excellent job of addressing D line, secondary and WR depth. At least 3-4 of those guys will be solid to very good starters on this team one day. And I like adding a pass rusher. Anyone they drafted was not starting this year anyway with Barwin and Cole entrenched for the time being. This kid can learn slowly and be ready to contribute next year.

I had Guard Yankey Rated as a 4th Round Prospect and stated so many times I am not sure where your getting that I stated he would be gone by the 54th Selection for I don’t recall ever saying that about Yankey,
but to answer your question, I really liked Guard Trai Turner from LSU who the Carolina Panthers took with the # 92 Pick. He’s big, nasty and likes to maul defenders and I would have preferred him over WR/Returnman Huff who I think would have still been on the Board at #101 when the Eagles
Selected CB J Watkins..
Bottom line, Herremans is in his final season as an Eagles and they do have depth already in house with Alan Barbree, Matt Tobin, Dennis Kelly, and even Center/Guard David Molk they picked up in January can compete for Guard .. I just think the Eagles wanted to select as many Players for this Draft/s strength which was WR & CB and bring in some bodies as Undrafted Free-Agents to compete and be groomed for down the road instead of using a Draft Pick on an OL ..

greetings folks – stumbled on this site a few days back and must admit it is very entertaining!

2 observations – 1) the constant ‘reach’ for Smith comments. Typcially this argumnet ‘they reached’ can’t be proven wrong becuase once a guy is drafted, he is drafted – however in this case – it is being reported in both the Philly and the Washington DC press that had Smith been available at #34 – the Redskins would have drafted him. Instead the Skins traded back and drafted another pass rushing OLB from Stanford – so maybe – just maybe… the front office new of the Redskins interest in Smith and new how far they could trade back and still get him? Bottom line is now you have multiple independent sources confirming that multiple teams had an interest in Smith and the Redskins highest pick was 34 so the Eagles new they needed to stay ahead of the Skins to get him?

2 – is it just me or do most draft conversations seem to go – blah, blah blah – reach, blah blah, Mike Mamula, blah blah blah, reach, blah blah blah, Mike Mamula. Oh yeah, did I say Mike Mamula six time during the conversation.. I think the pre-draft process is much more evolved in 2014 then it was in 1985 –

Just because the Redskins were going to pick him doesn’t make it a good pick is another argument. So then the Redskins were going to draft a project at 34.lol. Time will tell.

the argument people were making was that he could have been had in the 2nd or third round – you can go back and read the comments – no one complained about selecting him, people complained about the fact the Eagles ‘reached’ and took him when they could have gotten him later – fairly safe argument as no one will ever know when he would have been selected had the eagles not picked him – now information comes out saying that in fact the people saying the eagles could have gotten him in the 3rd or fourth were in fact dead wrong – that he would have been gone at 34 –

If Taylor hart could turn into justin smith in a few years the birds got a steal. The front seven this years depends on cox this is a high year for him if he plays like he did last year then he is gone he must have 8-10 sacks to be back in 2015 with hart and Kruger waiting in the wings this is a big year cox must play like a 1st rd pick.

I think Curry is the out man out as far as having a big Camp
& Preseason.. I expect Brandon Graham to get released soon

Curry? Why?……He may work better in a 4-3 Paul, but he’s probably one of the most talented Defensive Players they have on their roster.

Krueger, Long, Hart or anybody else you guys rationalize about being any good, doesn’t come close.

Because he’s not a “Kelly Guy”
Just like D-Jax wasn’t, or Bryce Brown wasn’t..
Nor is Brandon Graham.. So even though these Players are all Talented,
If Kelly is looking for something else in his Players,
Then they are goners .. It’s how it works in the NFL
When New Coach’s come in, they will make changes,
Give time to Players they Draft and bring in,
But will not be a patient with Previous Regime “Players”

He’s the Head Coach he can do whatever he wants, he can fill the roster full of PAC 12 and Oregon guys and only guys who graduate. He just better win. Paulman does that mean Foles and McCoy are gone next year because they’re not Kelly’s guys? I think we over analyze this stuff too much. As a HC getting paid millions I should be able to coach and cope with different people and attitudes this is life.

But even though he isn’t a quote unquote Kellu Guy, you don’t think if his play is leaps, and bounds over a Taylor Hart, Joe Krueger, or Travis Hart that Kelly would recognize, and appreciate what he would bring to the table despite not being drafted by him………Paul, just because YOU, would like to see him go doesn’t mean Kelly feels the same way.

Vinny Curry, would have brought back value in a trade, unlike Brandon Graham, but there have been no signs the Eagles even attempted to trade him. He is leaps, and bounds better than those guys, and all of them are 4-3 DE’s

I actually would like to see Curry Play more for the Eagles Cliff
but I just don’t see it happening in the Eagles 3-4 Scheme outside of 15-20 Snaps a game.. It is what it is, based on their Scheme, not what I think personally of Curry, who I like and would think he would be a very good Player in a 4-3 Scheme, but not in a 3-4, like your buddy Kony Ealy..
If a Player isn’t a fit, then he isn’t a fit.. Is their Room on a Roster for a Designated Pass-Rusher even in limited Snaps, yes there is and that’s probably what Curry is to the Eagles at this stage of his Career which is now going on his 3rd Season so no more excuses for Curry to be that guy where as Kruger,Log & Hart are basically starting their careers with the Eagles since Kruger was injured most of last Summer.. .

Well Paul, you could be right. But, there is also no guarantee that Kruger, Long & Hart will even make the team…

I don’t see any difference between Marcus Smith, and Kony Ealy, or Kruger, Long, and Hart for that matter. ……..It’s going to be interesting to see how they do in the NFL – I know we’ll be going back and forth throughout the season – I think Ealy, is in a good situation down there with you Paul, and that Defense….

BTW, how’s the weather down there?? I’m craving some Iced Tea & Lemon, and some Peach Cobbler Bruh….LOL!!!

It’s been beautiful down here the last couple of week’s and getting warm.. Remember that I am in the Mountains with Elevations in the 3,000 to 4,500ft Range, so we are always a good 10-15 degrees cooler than Charlotte or the flatlands as I call them,it’s been in 70’s here with no humidity and just perfect lately..
Re: Kony Ealy – found a perfect landing spot for he will learn and back-up both Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson at DE for their front 4 and probably play 20-25 Snaps a game as he learns and can still be effective with that Front 4 ..
I don’t believe the Panthers were targeting him,but when he fell all the way to them at the 60th Pick, they wasted no time in scooping him up.. Could be one of the ‘steals” of the Draft
but Johnson and Hardy also make big $$$, If Ealy shows he can be a big time Player, then Johnson is probably the odd-man out in 2015 and beyond.. Excellent pick by the Panthers, where sometimes, fortune falls your way in the Draft, the key is to take advantage of it and go ahead and Select the Player with the most upside
Re – On Eagles DE/Pass Rushing Situation – I, like you, am not sold on any of the Eagles Pass-Rushers DE/OLB (Kruger,Long,Curry,Tyler Hart ,Marcus Smith, etc, etc) and will have to see how they all look come Camp Time.. I do know that Curry has been active and produces when he gets on the Field, Can he sustain and improve on this, I hope he can for I like the guy, but I also believe that all Players will be given lots of Opportunity to impress the Coach’s,etc ,and chances are
3 of the 5 Player’s will make the Roster and all things being equal, it will be Coach Kelly’s “Guys” that make it..

No, I like Marcus Smith, I just don’t know about him as a 3-4 OLB, just like the concerns of some with Kony Ealy. Again, I think they are similar in athletic ability, thus I’m willing to give him a chance…

The only picks I frowned on were Taylor Hart, Ed Reynolds, and although I’m cool with Josh Huff, I would have chosen Gabe Jackson.

SF signed UDFA LB Shayne Skov. I was hoping the Eagles would have signed him. Does anyone know if Christian Jones was signed?

The Bears signed him. I remember a few yrs back a bunch of you (including myself) wanted the Eagles to draft LB Vontaze Burfict from ASU, and they avoided him due to character issues. Sometimes you just need to roll the dice and gamble. If they are going to give players like Michael Vick a chance, then why not certain players coming out of college? I just don’t get it..

Christian Jones I get, if your not a rock solid star type you don’t get drafted if you have significant character issues. Skov I don’t get I thought he was a solid player I was surprised he wasn’t drafted.

Ummm, did not the dog fighting land Mike in prison (regardless as to what you think about the situation), that constitutes being in trouble with the law, especially when you are found guilty and sentenced. Was it unprecedented? Yes, none the less, being found guilty and sentenced makes you a criminal.
