Projecting The 53-Man Roster

joseyQuarterbacks (3)

Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley

No surprises here. G.J. Kinne most likely goes to the practice squad for another year.

Running Backs (4)

LeSean McCoy, Darren Sproles, Matthew Tucker, Henry Josey

I have always been a fan of Chris Polk, but I just don’t see how he can make this team after sitting out the entire preseason. Polk has always been injury-prone throughout his entire career, and I think some of the guys behind him have developed enough that they bring just as much to the table (if not more) than what Polk can.

Matthew Tucker and Henry Josey have both earned a spot on this team.

Tucker is a physical guy who runs hard, and Josey has tremendous explosiveness, and seems to have great vision and shiftiness when he runs with the football. I think Josey may have the highest ceiling of any of the reserves. He’s also excelled as a pass catcher.

Kenjon Barner could sneak on to the roster, but if he survives this cut it won’t be on merit, it will be because of the Oregon connection. Barner has just looked “OK” at best to me in the two games that he’s appeared in. I don’t see nearly the same great explosiveness or vision that I see from Josey. Barner also hasn’t impressed as a return man.

Wide Receivers (6)

Jeremy Maclin, Riley Cooper, Jordan Matthews, Josh Huff, Brad Smith, Arrelious Benn

Much like the running back position, the Eagles have had too many standouts at this position for them to not figure out a way to hang to six wideouts.

Arrelious Benn is the leader in my mind for the final position. Benn has shown that he can be a contributor in the passing game, and on special teams, which is sure to give him a leg up on some of these other guys. Some of the receptions he’s made have been exceptionally difficult, and require great concentration. He’s also got good size.

Damaris Johnson is going to be one of the toughest guys to cut. He’s an explosive guy, and he’s shown that he can make things happen when he touches the football. However, I think he’s also a guy that is prone to some mental lapses at times, and doesn’t have the best hands in the world.

I’m not sure what Brad Smith has done to make himself a lock to make this roster, but the coaches seem to think pretty highly of him, and its widely expected that he’ll be safe.

Jeff Maehl is another tough cut. He’s one of Kelly’s favorites, and knows the system well. But he just doesn’t do anything particularly well.

Will Murphy is a strong practice squad candidate, he’s been solid throughout the preseason, but he’s caught in a deep numbers game.

Tight Ends (4)

Brent Celek, Zach Ertz, James Casey, Trey Burton

One interesting decision the Eagles have to make is the fate of Trey Burton.

Do they think they can get him on to the practice squad? If not do they try to find a trade partner for James Casey (though that’s pretty unlikely given his salary) or do they give any thought to moving on from Casey now?

I think they’re going to stick with Casey as the third tight end, and Burton did enough to make the team.

Offensive Line (9)

Jason Peters, Evan Mathis, Jason Kelce, Todd Herremans, Alan Barbre, David Molk, Matt Tobin, Dennis Kelly, Andrew Gardner

David Molk stood out and won the backup center job. Tobin and Kelly are the top reserves. Gardner holds down a spot until Lane Johnson returns from suspension.

Defensive Line (6)

Fletcher Cox, Bennie Logan, Cedric Thornton, Beau Allen, Vinny Curry, Taylor Hart

Taylor Hart beats out Brandon Bair because of his draft status combined with the Oregon connection.

Damion Square doesn’t survive the final cut after being outplayed by Beau Allen.

Linebackers (8)

DeMeco Ryans, Mychal Kendricks, Connor Barwin, Trent Cole, Brandon Graham, Marcus Smith, Bryan Braman, Najee Goode

If Casey Matthews makes this team again, there should be riots outside of the Novacare complex.

Travis Long has done well enough to make the team, but I can’t see the team keeping five reserves.

Emmanuel Acho also should get some roster consideration, but he’s not flashed enough.

Cornerbacks (5)

Cary Williams, Bradley Fletcher, Brandon Boykin, Nollan Carroll, Jaylen Watkins

Cornerback depth looks more solid than its been in some time.

Roc Carmichael and Curtis Marsh are the notable cuts here.

Safeties (5)

Malcolm Jenkins, Nate Allen, Earl Wolff, Chris Maragos, Ed Reynolds

No surprises here.

Reynolds is pretty raw, but has a chance to develop into a decent player.

Specialists (3)

Cody Parkey, Donnie Jones, Jon Dorenbos

Parkey’s success in the fourth preseason game should be enough to get him the nod over the inefficient Alex Henery.

Otherwise, expect to hear many collective groans when the cuts are announced on Saturday.

who is going to be the returner?
I thought Huff was drafted for that job but where is he?
Will Sproles be the kickoff guy? Who fields punts? ( DJax is who they trusted last year) Kenyon Banner looks like he is the punt returner.

Differ from denny’s 53 man roster a little —
I think Damien Square, Casey Matthews and Kenjon Barner make the team.
Trey Burton, Ed Reynolds and Henry Josie don’t.

No Doubt that Sproles will All Punt Return.
Kick-Off Return still open .. Maybe Huff, Brad Smith, Nolan Carroll or even a Josey

I could see the Eagles keeping Trey Burton as a 4th TE and use him all over the formations, backfield, Special Teams etc,etc.. but by doing so, they would only be able to keep keep 5 WR and to be honest, Burton would play more like a WR than a Traditional TE, so it’s almost as if he is the 6th WR
I think Burton could develop into a nice SLot Receiver and create some real mis-match’s going against smaller CB’s and or slower LB/Safeties for down the road..

I disagree about the DL where I believe 6 DL is not enought
They will need 7 DL so Brandon Bair makes the 53 Man ROster
Also I like LB Travis Long over LB Braman who has not shown much, as the final LB.. To make DE Bair make the 53 Man Roster, Safety Ed Reynolds would have to go and be placed on the Practice Squad, He is simply not ready at this time to compete at the NFL Level.. Give him a year to Develop and maybe he has a shot for 2015 53 Man Roster but not now..

Paul…Let me run this by you. I got no problem with Chip keeping marginal players like Will Murphy around and a couple other Oregon guys to let them get some tape. But when it comes to the 53, I will be absolutely LIVID if they keep Barner. That is using his heart and not his head to make football decisions and we CANNOT have that. There is no way Barner has made it over any of the other guys or offers more than Polk once he is healthy. They can’t give me the return man (while Huff is out) option because first he has been unimpressive for both Philly and Carolina returning kicks and you have Sproles and Brad Smith to fill in for that. That’s nothing but bullshit nepotism if he does that. So is keeping Mahel over Benn but not as bad. Bair deserves to make it. What are your feelings??

If Polk is still feeling the ill effects of a torn hamstring hes going to be useless for a while. There is no need carrying dead weight or weighting.

Last time we nonchalantly didnt care about a return we had the Green Bay debacle with Reid…and Reno Mahe came back.

I am not a fan of Kajon Barner and stated so when they traded with Carolina to get him.. I live here in NC and have watched Barner for 2 Years and that was enough for me.. He’s not an NFL Player

I think once the Regular Season Starts, Sproles will handle all the Punt Return Duties
and then will go with a group for handling the Kick-off Returns whether it’s Josh Huff, N Carroll, Josey, Maehl, etc, etc…

Izell…not advocating for Polk. He is cut or short term IR. No roster spot this week for him. And I wasn’t advocating not having a return man. I was stating we have Sproles, B Smith and Carroll if Huf can’t go next week. So rationalizing keeping Barner to help out with returning kicks is not selling with me.

Hold your horses cowboy. Foles is the guy. This is his team now and there is no debate about that. Sanchez buys Barkley a year to get himself ready for 2nd team duty unless a trade is made to move him. If so they may sign another QB to put on PS and only roll with 2 on the 53 this year with an eye towards signing a vet to back up next year replacing Sanchez..

Josey needed to be working on ST plays and returning punts and Kicks. He may make it to PS as he will be a 3rd-4th RB on most teams and he needs to be able to play ST. He did not show any return ability that I am aware of and I think that is why he is an early cut.

Blocking makes short yardage work not the size of the runner. Big runners are just better to wear down defenders in that a gut as big as a LB gets to eat back 7’s for breakfast. HE STILL NEEDS BLOCKING though.

On most teams if the guy filling roster spot 45-53 is playing there will be a significant drop off in talent anyway. You hope that you are bringing in a young player that surprises you or a solid guy you trust. We have the latter. Its ok not fantastic but ok.

I would complain if Casey Mathews was starting over Kendricks or Ryans because of his Oregon status but that sort of thing is NOT happening. I say most teams last 5 players are all about the same level of talent.

The Casey Matthews effect! From Bleeding Green Nation.

According to a report from Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to keep linebacker Casey Matthews on the 53-man roster for yet another year. At least for now. The team has also decided to release third-year linebacker Emmanuel Acho.

Sounds like 2013 all over again, huh? Many questioned Chip Kelly’s decision to keep Matthews over Acho last year, but looking back it seems like Kelly made the right call.

Acho absolutely lit it up in the preseason last year only to be cut. Many were quick to complain about how Kelly chose to keep Casey Matthews (Oregon bias!) instead of Acho. Matthews, who was second in special teams tackles in 2012, went on to finish with another good year in 2013. Matthews finished top three in special teams tackles. Meanwhile, Acho spent a brief stint on the New York Giants practice squad before being signed back by the Eagles. Acho ended up being a gameday inactive until undrafted rookie free agent insider linebacker Jake Knott, a special teams contributor, got hurt. Acho played a mere 23 snaps on defense before being cut again and placed on the Eagles practice squad to finish the 2013 season.

I know Matthews isn’t a popular player. In fact, he’s pretty much the least popular player on the Eagles roster. But he is what he is: a marginal backup with (theoretical) positional versatility (ILB and OLB) who also contributes on special teams. There’s nothing awesome about that and the Eagles could certainly upgrade… but they could also do worse.

With Travis Long out for the season, the Eagles inside linebacker position is coming into focus. DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks project to be the starters while Najee Goode should be the first inside linebacker off the bench. Matthews is the fourth inside linebacker and will play on special teams. That is, if he’s even active on game day.

Speaking of game day, I leave you with this completely meaningless yet hilarious stat: Crazy, but true: the Eagles were 7-3 when Casey Matthews played at least one defensive snap in 2013.

I am a huge Chip Kelly supporter but I have to say, he is making some very questionable decisions on the roster. There is NO reason for for Murphy or Barner to still be on this team, even if they get cut by 4pm today, they should not be on this roster. Matthews makes this roster by default, hopefully they scour the waiver wire for a better LB.
He has kept all the Oregon players till today….why? Maehl, Matthews, Barner, Kaddu, Kelikipi, Murphy should have all been cut the first set of cuts.
Thinking with his heart is going to get him thinking about updating his resume!

He’s that 4th RB/FB/HB/WR & TE and Special Teamer

Eagles carrying 9 OL which does not include
Lane Johnson giving them 10 so 1 will probably go

But with Trey Burtobs versatility, they may only keep

Trey Burton should NOT be on this roster! He is not above average at anything. Why keep a 4th TE who will NEVER see the field when you kept 6 WR’s. If Casey who is the 3rd TE hardly saw the field last year, Burton def will not see any action. They should have kept Tucker over Burton. With Polk being more fragile then Maclin, keeping Tucker would have been a smarter move.
If they wanted to waste a roster spot, why not keep Henery until you know that Parkey is the real deal.

Georgia Bulldogs RB T Gurkey is running wild over
A pooped out Clemson Defense 150 Yds – 2 TD’s
Plus a 100 Yd Kickoff Return for a TD
An early Candidate for Heisman and will be a stud at the NFL
Level..,

That’s RB Tim Gurley of Georgia..

Another RB who looks like the real deal at the NFL level
Is Wisconsin’s RB Melvin Gordon who reminds me a bit of A young LeSean McCoy… Keep an eye of this kid..

Their Coach blew that Game..
Why not keep fed ding Gordson who had 100 + yards
On 13 Carries in first half and only had 3 Carries in the 2nd
Which is shades of Andy Reid with McCoy back in the day..
Their WR’s got no separation all game vs LSU DB’s should have pounded it up the gut in the 2nd half.. Poor game by Wisconsin who let the game get away..

Yep and for those who have no idea, his go to receiver was on display tonight. Here’s a hint it wasn’t Kelvin Benjamin.

rashad greene led Florida State in reception and yards last season and dominated the National Championship game with 9 receptions but Benjamin exploded last season with 15 touchdowns including the game winner in the National Championship game. Green was the better wideout their freshmen and sophmore years but it is hard to say 15 TD last year doesn’t make Benjamin the better player than Greene last year. I like Greene a lot but something keep him out of draft, I think his size might be a concern ( weight) but i think he is a first rounder.

IF Rashard Greene plays well and stays healthy this year for the Seminoles, than he should be a Top #5 WR Drafted meaning he would be a 1st to Early 2nd Round Pick next Draft
He was explosive last evening that’s for sure and gets up to Top Speed within a couple of strides…

Big, when you get a chance, checkout Michigan Wolverine receiver Devin Funchess, 6;5″ 230…and fast with good hands.

Funchess was unstoppable vs App State yesterday..
Let’s see how he does versus Big X Competition
But a great start for him and Michigan yesterday
A WR from Mich State had a big game yesterday as well
Whose name escapes me…

Funchess has been building up to this, I have been watching him for two years now, he is a stud. He is more polished than Kelvin Benjamin.

He needs to change his last name though..
Maybe take his Mom’s “Maiden”…
Funchess won’t work in the Today’s NFL & Marketing

I am listening to Merle on WIP now. That would be sweet. Funchess will be a first rounder as long as he stays healthy.

WR Tony Lippett from Mich State had a big first Game
With 165 Yards in Receiving with 2 TD’s
He’s 6-3, quick, but only 190lbs and will need to add sone weight and strength as he goes to the NFL but can leap and has very good hands… Keep an eye on him as well..

If Gurley was healthy in 2013, he probably would have entered the Draft and probably still should have… He’s had some health issues and doesn’t want to get beat down in the SEC before coming a Professional
