Can Marcus Mariota Play Under Control Like Russell Wilson?

MarcusMariota3I think it’s obvious, Chip Kelly wants to move up to get Marcus Mariota in the worse way because he knows this kid and believes he can play under control like Russell Wilson.  This aspect of Wilson’s game is very underrated, but it’s of vital importance. If you’re a NFL quarterback, who can’t play under control, you can’t stay healthy and therefore you can’t be a quality starting quarterback in the league.

Do you remember all the times you were yelling at Michael Vick when he was starting quarterback for the Eagles?  You were telling him to slide and get on the ground.  Right?  Kelly believes Mariota is one of the guys who will get on the ground.

First of all, let’s make this clear, Kelly wants a quarterback, who has the speed to be a run threat.  The quality of being able to run, opens up Kelly’s run offense.  Nick Foles doesn’t have this ability and that’s why he’s the final option at the quarterback position for Kelly.  First it’s Mariota, then according to a report possibly San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick, then Foles. Mark Sanchez will definitely be the backup.

Kelly knows Mariota and believes he can play under control.  Vick was the perfect example of a quarterback, who couldn’t play under control.  The former number one pick in the draft couldn’t resist putting himself at risk.  At the end of a 30-yard run, Vick couldn’t resist risking taking a big hit in order to gain another ten yards.  He would dash into crowds of defensive players and suffer injuries.

Chip obviously believes Mariota will be able to forego the additional yardage in order to avoid taking the big hits and therefore stay healthy.

I’m sure Kelly has been salivating while checking out Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.   The former Oregon head coach has seen how Wilson has been executing the running part of an option running attack.  Wilson doesn’t run the ball a lot but when he does, he inflicts severe wounds to the opposing defense.  Do you remember the touchdown run Wilson made against the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field?  He went into the end zone from 30 yards out and was untouched.

The ability to avoid injury while presenting a run.  Wilson does not absorb punishment when he’s directing the .  If things open up on a play he takes off.  If it doesn’t open up he gets on the ground.  If he gains 25-yards and he might have to absorb a severe hit in order to get another 10 yards, he gets on the ground.  He doesn’t run the risk of getting hurt.

I’ve seen that in Mariota’s game and also in Kaepernick.  They’ve both got game breaking speed, but they get on the ground rather than takes hit.

In addition to avoiding injury chances, Wilson has a habit of always looking downfield when he is scrambling.  He scrambles to throw.  His head is always up when he heads downfield and it results in many big plays because once he takes off, defenders in the secondary leave their coverage and it opens up big plays.

Like Chip, I think Mariota will be able to play under control like Wilson.  He’ll avoid taking the big hit when he runs and he will keep his head up when he scrambles.

Check out Chip Kelly gushing about Russell Wilson a year ago.

Q. Why is Seahawks QB Russell Wilson so effective on the zone-read plays in particular?

COACH KELLY: He’s just a great athlete. He has legitimate speed and quickness where he can burst off a disconnect and gain some serious yards. And he’s a really, really good decision maker. It makes him a legitimate threat every time they are running the ball out of the gun that the ball can be handed off or he can keep it. So you have to really respect him and understand what he’s going to do in those situations.

Continuing…….

COACH KELLY: He does a great job. That’s the other thing I’ve said, he has great pocket awareness and the one thing he doesn’t do is he doesn’t put himself in harms way. He’s not looking to run people over, he’s looking to literally go first down, touchdown, get down. He’s got an opportunity to put himself in a situation, if he can run for a touchdown, he’s going to do it, if he can run for a first down, he’s going to did it, but he’s also not going to try to take on a middle linebacker that he knows he’s not going to win that battle. I think that’s part of what makes him. He’s got such poise and he’s such a good decision maker, that’s what makes him so dangerous.

Q. So many running quarterbacks seem to take a lot shots which put them at risk. How does he not do that?

COACH KELLY: Because he’s really smart and I think he understands what he can do. Also, he’s 5’10”, so he’s not going to run people over and I think sometimes those guys with that mentality ‑‑ it’s tough to get that out of some guys. It’s hard, too, because you also admire it. You want a tough guy.

When we played — I don’t know if you guys remember our first game against Washington [last year], [RB LeSean] McCoy bounces [outside] and comes back the other way and Mike [former Eagles QB Michael Vick] is lead blocking. I’m like, ‘No, Mike, I don’t need you to lead block!’ Know what I mean? But that’s also one of the things that made Mike such a great player is that he was so competitive, that he wanted to win every single snap he was out there. It’s kind of a rare combination that Russell has.

Let me finish by saying, the signing of Mark Sanchez to a multi-year deal doesn’t guarantee the Birds are going to be able to move up in the draft and get Mariota.  The signing of Sanchez simply means Kelly has his backup quarterback.  Sanchez will be the backup quarterback whether the team’s starter is Mariota, Kaepernick or Foles.

Sigh…..how can there possibly be soo many people out there who actually think Kaepernick is a good qb?

Guy clips off one 60 yrd run every 3 games and that’s all he needs to be a superstar in your eyes.

Colin Kaepernick is a terrible QB.

LOL…the same team that Alex Smith led to the exact same place (save a muffed punt return)

I told you all that the Kaepernick experiment would end badly…..

and here it is…2.5 years after the media anointed him as the next “greatest/bestest thing” (which a groveler like you lapped up like the pablum it is) and the 49ers are falling apart, the coach is fired/gone/left, and Krapernick is on the block. Total disaster. As I told you would happen.

Kap is better than Foles! He has led a team to the Super Bowl…won playoff games…He stays healthy too….Its a no-brainer…you have to make the move and get a more talented QB than what you have now. The Foles/Sanchez tandem just doesn’t work…we cant possibly do that again…especially now when we dont have the main players that gave Foles a little success…DJax, Shady, and Maclin….
Time to turn the page on Foles

YUCK

Beat writer Jimmy Kempski has heard the Eagles believe Josh Huff has more upside than Jordan Matthews.
As rookies in 2013, Matthews impressed with 67-872-8 while Huff made a handful of bone-headed rookie mistakes on the way to a meager 8-98-0. However, Huff is Chip Kelly’s pet project from Oregon and has a bit more versatility than Matthews, who currently profiles as only a slot receiver. With Jeremy Maclin leaving a wideout depth chart that lost DeSean Jackson just 12 months earlier, Huff will at least have an opportunity to make a leap on the outside. Ineffective Riley Cooper’s snaps must be reduced.

Maclin – Gone

McCoy – Gone
Foles – good as gone

Cole – Gone

Many of the best players on this team for YEARS are gone this season. It’s ok to move on from players, but when you move on from that many guys, trading all of your picks for 1 player is one of the stupidest moves a coach could ever make.

big as we talked about at another point in the thread– this guy doesn’t want guys that ‘have to have’ a lot of touches. the best example I can think of was I think it was the last game when ertz had like 15 catches- when asked Kelly said ‘he was open’– but in the previous games ertz barely touched the ball he says ‘because he wasn’t open’–
I don’t think he wants a back or WR that is so important that he has to get a bunch of touches… all I can figure.

big– as I’ve said all along– this guy looks at players with a different measuring stick than us– I don’t understand the measuring stick but it is certain that he sees it different-
we all see djax as a game changer and cooper as a bum– yet he gives cooper a decent little contract and cuts djax– McCoy is a great runner yet traded because of yes money but 2 his style isn’t N\S, so we get a dude with little tread on the tires.–
The end game is and you have said it before- its good he has all the power because either we are seeing the rise of the holy roman empire or we are seeing the fall of it before it was ever built– there will only be one man to blame\praise when its said and done.

Chip is building a juggernaut folks…

He made Andy losers a playoff team with the same damn players during his introduction to the NFL, so what make you guys believe him jettisoning those same players while improving the defense is a step back?

Chip has a plan.

Worlids is coming here, we have Maxwell to help fix the leaking secondary, and Chip will have this offense clicking on all cylinders once his QB is in place.

Sanchez was signed to back up Chip’s guy and the special teams are one of the best in the NFL.

Chip Kelly is tired the bull crap mediocrity that eagles fans has come accustomed to.

This Eagles team will be a monster this coming season guys and chip will also plug in a 320 pound monster as a replacement for Todd Herremans.

Frank Gore will hit it up in there after one cut, punishing the opposing defenses.

Now we need to get Riley Cooper’s bum ass off the team then let the good times roll.

Another thing….

Foles is outta here with a trade between now and draft day.

Out with Andy’s and Roseman’s trash!

Man, all this sky is falling shit… I thought everybody wanted Kelly running the show? All the posts I read said good riddance to Roseman. I thought the defense needed to be upgraded? And that Chip would easily replace anyone on offense? DJax was the guy to get upset about. Maclin is just a very good player, not the dangerous threat DJax was. Maclin they can replace, no biggie there. Gore is a complete back who will be a good player for the short time he is here, and if he falters we have other backs who can step up. If there is one position on this team not to worry about, running back is it.

But so much of the bellyaching would stop for many on here if a press conference was held saying a long term agreement was reached with Foles Gold. Then Kelly would have carte blanche to do whatever. Even redo Cooper’s deal giving him more guaranteed money.

Chip Kelly just watched two teams in the Super Bowl that dont have dominant wide receivers. They have one QB in Tom Brady who is extremely smart and accurate and one QB in Russell Wilson who is mobile, accurate and smart.

he said ‘mm has a white mom and somoan dad and from the waist down he is all somoan– big butt and can run– from the waist up… he gets that from his mom’– it was on mike and ike– I almost choked on my coffee!

After reading the quotes on another site… I would suggest that if one implies, that because someone continues to employ another person of his/her same color, who made a racist statement, then you must condone it, and are also a racist, might then not the one making the implication be more racially focused than the person of whom the implication is being made?

Paulman’s Scenario on how the Draft Shakes out

Eagles Trade QB N Foles and 20th Pick to SL Rams for the 10th Overall Pick
which is being ironed out now ..
Then on Draft Day, Eagles Trade this 10th Overall Pick, a 4th Round Pick & CB Boykins and a 2nd Round Draft in 2016 to move up # 6 Overall for QB Mariota

After the prodigy’s pro day the ‘leaks’ from Titans camp will be how impressed they are with him. Then you will hear that the Bucs love his this, that or the other–all fishing for FOLES, cox, kendricks, the first 100 picks in the draft— titans and bucs have to be asking…. hmmm foles in my pro style offense, a starting lb, starting DT and a bunch of picks over the next couple of years… or a rookie running qb….

Eagles trade Foles and the 20th to Rams for the 10th pick.

Then Trade the 10th, Kendricks and a first next year (or something like that) to the Jets for #6.

Only to then see Cleveland in talks to trade its 2 firsts this year for the 5th spot and take Mariotta.

Tenny just then ransoms the Birds for even more at 2!!
Or Cleveland does make its trade and takes mariotta.
Or Tenny takes him at 2.

What a frikkin’ disaster that would be……

Eagles out a starting QB, starting LB, and out at least their 2016 first….

Eagles in super-scramble “trade down!” mode…..Grabbing Hundley wayyyyy too high in a panic….rolling into the season with the horrible Sanchize. Losing 4 of their first 5….switching to an unprepared Hundley who gets torn to pieces……

3-13 and watching the Jets use the Birds #1 pick on a new QB……

Meanwhile, Foles just playing nice conservative pocket passer, riding that STL D to 11-5 and 2nd place in the division and a playoff spot…..

LOL….

Eagles trade up, well they cannot risk losing Mariotta. The trade has to be with Tenny at #2 (at least)

Tennessee is not taking Foles..book it! If they want him, then Chip should let them have him..I would play the game. Chip may be willing to roll with Sanchez until a Bryce petty or Hundley is ready.
Nick Foles can’t stay healthy in Philly, what would make you think he could stay healthy in St. Louis long enough to ride wins to a 11+ season victory including the playoffs?

So what package would that be? Where can I read about this package..Browns in need of wide receivers and a tight end plus o line help..never mind the fact that they moved back up in the first round last year to get Johnny Runaround, and they just signed a QB to be the steward until Johnny runaround gets back to his feet. No way the Browns give up 12 and 19 to move up for another QB who they would have to train to play from the pocket.
Foles will have to compete with a backup QB in Sanchez who is getting paid money that would suggest he would start..which I think Chip would prefer given Sanchez’s contract.

I’m not saying that at all.

What I am saying is that it all has to be negotiated before hand. IF that’s the way they’re going to go…Foles to STL…then that pick(s)/player(s) to the jets…..well it all has to be agreed upon in principal beforehand.

That means agents and others all know. So its all set up beforehand….might not be announced till the draft, but with so many parts, its all agreed upon before…..

Can’t do that….and then what…..just sit and hope???? that Mariotta falls to 6??

Go back to the clubhouse and say…”Hey there Folse and Kendricks….I know we spent the last 2 months trying to trade you guys – but its all good right?

Can’t do that.

Either you go get Mariotta or you don’t….can’t just sit and hope he falls.

Chris Mortenson has said that he knows the Titans are NOT taking Mariota. I have heard from Brian Baldinger that he knows the Titans are going Defense. The Titans taking Mariota would be the saving grace for Foles supporters, but it’s not happening.

I didn’t say they were taking him– not at all– I actually said the exact opposite… but they will give the perception– or if they don’t they are really stupid and I can’t see that–
after his pro day– a leak here, a twitter message, an unconfirmed team source, some titan blogger, talk show host… it will start…
they want defense? ok… lets see cox, Kendrick and a real good CB at 20– damn that will help a defense! oh and in the 2nd round– still need defense…. how bout a rotational tackle? or depth at safety,CB or outside linebacker– there ya go chris and baldy- there is your defensive upgrades!

Listen fellas the Eagles do not want the 10th pick they want the 2nd pick so they are leaking reports that the Rams are the front runners to tweak the Titans into accepting the Eagles offer. Right now the Titans are like fine trade him to the Rams making the Eagles add more to the offer Foles, Cox and two 1’s and a 2nd. Hell they can ask for whatever and at this point force the Eagles hand and yes after MM’s pro day they will be gushing over him.

I’ve been saying this from the start.

This can’t be a “wait and see” or a “I hope he falls” scenario.

If they want Mariotta, they’ll have to go get him. Not at 10, not at 6, but at 1 or 2. Its the only way.

Either they get their guy, or they don’t. Can’t just make this shit up as they go along on draft day……..

I think they are going to move up to 1 or two and I think its going to cost a ton.

And I don’t like it, ’cause history says it never ever works.

If your the Eagles, take the much more likely chance that Titans do something else with that # 2 Pick like Select DT Leonard Williams or that some other Team wants to Trade Up to #2 for Williams….
The Eagles are the only Team hot for Mariota, I haven’t read or heard about 1 other Team interested in the Ducks QB, like I have heard about multiple Teams interested in DT Williams, or WR Kevin White, or Pass-Rushers Fowler, Beasly…
There is little reason for the Eagles to feel they have to move down to #2 for QB Mariotta, but let them Overpay, Chip Kelly doesn’t care, it’s not his Money or Future Draft Picks he’s concerned about…

Jacksonville Jaguars signed DT Jared Odrick to a 3 Year Deal is another DL I liked for Depth Purposes

Good For Brandon Graham,
I was hoping for his sake that he moved on,
he played well last year and will now have a great chance to prove that he’s and every-down player.. I am pulling for him, but we will see… there are not many Pass-Rushers out there and most of the Good Ones in the Draft will be gone early in the Top #10 .. Maybe a Rotation/Combo with Graham for 75% of the Plays & Marcus Smith II for 25% of the Plays works opposite of Barwin…

This probably means no Jason Worilds…

Bring Brandon Graham back as a starter is totally irresponsible. He stinks, he is a situational player – NOTHING more – darn sure isn’t a starter……and not worth 1MILLION , let alone 6 million a year..

People on these post have been overvaluing Graham for years, and he is no better then than he is now. They have to draft an OLB, ILB, and WR high in the draft now..
