What Are Concerns For The Eagles Heading Into 2015?

ChipKelly5Tick tock, tick tock, kickoff for the Eagles-Falcons game can’t get here soon enough. The preseason was as exciting as anyone could have asked, providing fans even more optimism heading into year three of the Chip Kelly era. Plenty of optimism surrounds the team as they prepare for their week one opponent the Atlanta Falcons.

The number one question heading into the season, the health status of quarterback Sam Bradford, the mood has certainly shifted after preseason game three against the Packers. Whether Bradford holds up the entire season remains a concern, but those who doubted why Chip made the trade appear satisfied, for the time being.

For me, the areas of concern have much to do with the “depth” at key positions, including the offensive line and the secondary.

The Eagles offensive line starts two back-ups from last season in Andrew Gardner and Allen Barbre. The only veteran signed in the offseason was John Moffitt who failed to return to make the team. The starting unit looks solid; possibly better than what was anticipated, but concern is valid with the backups. Minus Josh Andrews, the rest are guys are the backups from the year, and for a team that wants to run the football early and often, a team protecting an injury prone quarterback, not adding to the offensive line is a big gamble that Chip Kelly has publically stated he is confident in taking.

The Eagles secondary will be better in 2015; right? Maxwell was “overpaid” to ensure one of the cornerbacks would get the job done. As for the rest, there is a reason to be anxious. Nolan Carroll, a guy who fans didn’t get to see start I 2014 even when ex-Eagle Bradley Fletcher was being embarrassed weekly, will start opposite of Maxwell. He has started NFL games, did so during his time in Miami, but struggled in the preseason staying with his man. With Boykin now it Pittsburgh, rookie Eric Rowe is third on the depth chart, but he is not ready to start in the NFL, looking more like a safety trying to play cornerback throughout the preseason. Rowe may see veteran E.J. Bigger man the nickel slot until the coaching staff feels he is ready. Undrafted Denzel Rice join journeyman Biggers to round out the depth at the cornerback position group.

Safety is once again a position of uncertainty, a reoccurring feeling since Dawkins left Philadelphia. The decision to move Walter Thurmond to man the safety spot opposite of Malcom Jenkins is one I actually like. Knowing how Chip likes to play his safeties in multiple roles, it’s a decision that I don’t feel is as risky as it is strategic. The issue is Thurmond has been injured a lot throughout his career, and the next guy up in Chris Maragos. Maragos is a special teamer and after him, Jerome Couplin is a complete unknown. I wouldn’t be shocked if an injury were to occur at either starting safety position that EJ Biggers who has started games at safety fills in instead of either Maragos or Couplin.

There is concern about the secondary on my end to start the season, but I do feel when looking back at the 2015 season, I’m going to may satisfied with how they played. The offensive line will be just fine, wearing down opponents with the best running game in the NFL, proving that Chip Kelly understood what he had from a talent perspective when releasing proven veteran Evan Mathis.

The best thing about speculating the unknown of the Philadelphia Eagles is the fact that the regular season is quickly approaching and answers to the lingering questions are coming. Possible flaws of this football team could actually become some of their strengths, and endless potential for how far the team can go has everyone fired up for the 2015 season.

Good Stuff Jeff..

Here are my Concerns about the 2015 Season

1) Health of Sam Bradford – Goes without saying, with a Healthy Bradford, the Eagles are a Playoff Team, with Sanchez leading the way, probably not..
2) Health of Center Jason Kelce & LT Jason Peters – Eagles have no Viable Back-Ups at LT & Center and was cause a complete disruption to the Offense
3) Deep Threat at WR – Who becomes a Deep Threat in the Passing Game to help force Defense’s & Safety’s to play honest and have to play the entire field.. Is Agholor that Receiver ?

On Defense
1) Any Injury to any of the 4 Starters (Jenkins,Thurmond,Maxwell & Carroll) will be problematic for the Secondary as all young Unproven Players are behind the Starters except for Biggers who has Starters Experience
2) Nickel/Slot CB – Going with Young unproven Players like Rowe,Rice could be disastrous to start out as they go thru growing Pains, Biggers likely to get the nod starting out the Season

Special Teams
1) Kicker Parkey’s Health… A Groin Injury for a Kicker can be a Season-Long issue where it tighten’s up and and gets re-aggravated..

Coaching Staff
1) Defensive Coordinator – Billy Davis needs to be much more aggressive with his Calls and must Mix & Match things up way earlier in Games and not allow opposing QB’s the time to get comfortable and to get into a Rhythm..
Eagles face a lot of Veteran QB’s this Season in Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, Tom Brady, Eli Manning,Matt Stafford, Carson Palmer and even Ryan Tannehill,Cam Newton & Ryan Fitzpatrick have Started a lot of NFL Games
Bottom Line is that the Eagles have a Talented and Hungry Def Front 7 and DC Davis must unleash their Pass-Rush from the Get go to get opposing QB’s on the Move and take his chances with the Secondary Personnel..
If the does this, the New Secondary will have less time to get exposed by Veteran QB’s and by mid-season, the Secondary should really start to jell and play better as a Unit
Davis must stay aggressive with his Front 7 and not worry about protecting his Secondary like he tried to do last Season.. If the Eagles get burned a few times which will happen, then don’t worry about it and keep the pressure on

top 3 question marks in order for 2015 season
—————
1) Eric Rowe looks bad, really really bad. For every good play I’ve seen him make this preseason I saw him get roasted 10 times.
2) Brandon Graham is not an OLB and not even half as good as Trent Cole. Brandon Graham is a part timer not a starter and has no business even playing OLB. Biggest mistake of the off season was releasing Trent Cole. The backups to Graham are way below average hot garbage ( Smith, Jones, Braman).
3) Sam Bradford’s weak knees.

They shouldn’t be talking any extension with Bradford…he hasn’t even played in a regular season game for the Eagles…see if he produces well this season, then talk….The guy basically got paid for free for last season…extension talks can wait

1. Bradford
2. Bradfors
3. Billy Davis

Honorable Mention: Bradford’s knees

Seriously though, with a healthy Bradford Eagles likely a playoff team. Bradford goes down…well…

It will be interesting to see what happens when games get out of hand. Does he bring Sanchez in to wrap up games or does he slow down the offense and pound pound pound.

I am just waiting for HAC to come on and state that I called for the Eagles Trading Bradford for RG3 all Season Long… Good Grief…

A Slow News Day… All Eagle Players reported for Practice today which included TE Zac Ertz, Kicker Parkey and LB Ryans & MSII as the Eagles are probably the Healthiest Team starting out the Season which hopefully means a Fast Start

Seahawk News ***
Safety Kam Chancellor did not Report to Practice and will not be Playing in Week #1 Per Coach Pete Carroll who started that he has made plans and is not going to worry about Players who are not there …
The Seahawks have to decide quickly whether to place him on the Failure to Report List an Trade Him or to give him a New Deal which both Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider say they will not do so expect something to happen soon for they will not allow Kam Chancellor to become a weekly distraction

Three preseason drives and all is good, meanwhile let’s overlook what he did as a starter for multiple seasons

This guy Bradford is not the answer

Just watch

Bad body language, poor stature, good, very good release, but he’s softer than hell, its the reason he’s an inadequate pro, when the rush comes in it will be apparent that this was a mistake

To all the foles lovers please go to rotoworld.com and check out Tim barnes and read the description of rams oline, and you will see why foles will do nothing for rams, i find it hilarious that anybody thinks the rams offense will do anything with a terrible oline, and no wrs, and a bunch of banged up rbs, but hes got a great defense, so what the offense will be terrible, and to top it all off, jeff fucking fisher is the coach…..he is done

Eagles have a new #3 QB… Stephen Morris. He is a 2014 undrafted free agent out of Miami.

Chip said he has a cannon for an arm and he can make all the throws.

How would you like to be Tim Tebow…. beat-out by an undrafted kid from Miami…LOL
