Eagles Voluntary Workouts Begin Today

SamBradford13Today the Doug Pederson-led Philadelphia Eagles begin their offseason workout program at the Nova Care Complex.  The fact that Pederson is in his first year with the Birds will allow the Eagles to get started earlier than the other teams with their voluntary mini-camp just before the draft.  That voluntary mini-camp will take place on April 19, 20, 21.  Other teams in the league without a new coach will have to wait until after the draft.

The Phase One part is the VOLUNTARY phase of the offseason program.  Emphasis on voluntary because the players don’t have to be there.  Players on the Eagles roster can continue rehabilitating injuries and they can also go in the weightroom and work to get stronger.  They can also work on their conditioning by running and training in numerous ways.  This last for two weeks.

During the Phase Two segment, the coaches get involved, but they only coach different positions on a separate basis.  They can’t do offense vs. defense drills during this time.  This last for three weeks.

The Phase Three part of the offseason program is the regular offseason workouts that we’re used to seeing.  During this period, which last for four weeks, the team can conduct 7-on-7 drills which is the pass offense and defense portions of the workouts.  It involves all the skill position players, such as the quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers versus the linebackers and defensive backs on the defense.  There aren’t any run plays, it’s all passing plays.

They can conduct 9-on-7 workouts which focuses on the running game.  The offense has everybody but the wide receivers involved in this drill, while the defense has everybody but the safeties and the cornerbacks.

There will also be 11-on-11 drills where the entire defense will be working against the entire offense.  They will be wearing helmets but no shoulder pads or hip pads or thigh pads.  These are no contact workouts so they can’t tackle during these drills.

Voluntary Minicamp:  April 19, 20, 21

Ten OTA Offseason Team Workouts:  May 17-19, May 24-26, May 31, June 1-3.

Mandatory Minicamp:  June 7, 8, 9
