Thoughts And Questions About The Eagles As Camp Begins

WendellSmallwoodRB1With Training Camp set to begin, the 2016 Eagles’ season is just around the corner. Here’s some thoughts, questions, expectations and concerns about the franchise’s outlook for the coming season.

Will Any Of The Wide Receivers Breakout In 2016?

On paper, the Eagles’ offense isn’t scaring anyone.

Defensive coordinators look at the Birds’ personnel, and they see an injury-prone and mediocre starting quarterback in Sam Bradford. They an injury-prone, average-at-best featured running back in Ryan Mathews. But most of all, they see a completely unimpressive collection of options at the wide receiver position.

One of the worst things that Chip Kelly did to this franchise was his dismantling of the offense’s premier talent. Letting DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin go were major mistakes that led to Kelly’s undoing, and will still haunt the franchise for years to come.

The Eagles have invested draft picks in the first, second, and third rounds of their recent drafts into the position, but have been left with nothing but question marks.

Jordan Matthews is the best player of the bunch, but drops too many passes, and probably is best suited to be a complimentary number-two receiver.

Last year’s first-round pick Nelson Agholor was incredibly disappointing as a rookie. In today’s NFL, rookie receivers have no trouble bursting onto the scene, and Agholor was completely invisible despite serving as a starting receiver in his rookie year. The last time the Eagles spent a pick that high on a wideout that was that unproductive in his rookie year, we’d have to go back to the days of Freddie Mitchell. I think part of the reason for Agholor’s struggles can be blamed on Kelly, whose poor gameplanning and general lack of innovation in play calling really didn’t give Agholor much of a chance to shine.

Josh Huff has flashed explosive playmaking ability, but he hasn’t been nearly consistent enough, and could be in danger of being released before the summer is over.

Veteran additions Chris Givens and Rueben Randle bring some needed experience and a little upside to the table, but both also come with red flags. Givens has gone through multiple franchises without being able to establish himself. Randle had some productive numbers for the Giants, but the fact that New York made no effort to re-sign him raises a lot of concerns.

The Eagles Will Receive Little Impact From Their Draft Class

The method with which the Eagles approached the 2016 draft was one that was geared towards setting the team up to be stronger years from now, while taking a hit in the short-term.

As such, this presents a problem for the 2016 team. The Eagles will receive very little impact from draft picks in the coming year.

Carson Wentz is expected to be inactive for most of the season. Once the team is out of contention, there’s a chance he could see some action in the final month of the season, but the second overall pick won’t take meaningful snaps in his rookie year.

The team didn’t have a second-round pick thanks to Chip Kelly’s highly questionable trade for Sam Bradford a year ago.

Third rounder Issac Seumalo is also expected to be among the team’s inactives this year. The team doesn’t consider him a realistic option to start this year, and he just isn’t in the mix with Alan Barbre or Stefan Wisniewski for the left guard position.

Fifth-rounder Wendall Smallwood probably has the best chance to make an impact, assuming he does in fact make the team. Ryan Mathews is all but guaranteed to go down with injury at some point, leaving Smallwood with a decent opportunity for playing time.

Of the late-round picks, Blake Countess and Jalen Mills shouldn’t be playing in the secondary unless something has gone horribly wrong with the veterans in front of them. Defensive end Alex McCalister, if he makes the team, will be buried on the depth chart behind Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry, and Connor Barwin. Linebacker Joe Wilson figures to help primarily as a special teamer.

There’s just no impact players among the rookies this year, and that’s going to hurt the Eagles’ chances of competing for the division.

On draft night, the other teams in the division made themselves better this year. Ezekial Elliot is going to be a workhorse for the Dallas Cowboys. Sterling Sheppard and Paul Perkins will be instant contributors for the Giants. Josh Doctson adds another talented target to Kirk Cousins’ arsenal in Washington. And the Philadelphia Eagles got themselves a bunch of guys that will spend 2016 developing.

The Eagles Are Moving In The Right Direction, But Still Face An Uphill Climb

When I look at the Eagles and what they’ve been able to accomplish in the offseason, I feel good about a lot of the moves the team has made and where they’re headed.

For the first time since 1999, the Eagles have identified a franchise quarterback that they want to develop and build around for years to come. For the first time since the great Jim Johnson passed away in 2009, the team has a qualified, experienced, successful defensive coordinator in place that has a chance to restore the unit to the greatness that has long been lost between the likes of Juan Castillo and Billy Davis. The Eagles are focused on building themselves up the right way, rather than try to out-gimmick the NFL with Chip Kelly’s flawed and simple offensive philosophy.

However, I think the team is looking at least one, possibly two more losing seasons before they really start to find their place among contenders in the NFC again. The lack of impact from the rookie class this season, combined with the lack of explosive offensive talent, and the lack of a first-round pick next year says to me that in all likelihood, the next two seasons are going to be building years.

That’s not a welcome take for a city that’s been filled with losing across almost all of their major franchises over the last few years. But it’s reality. Doug Pederson is going to need time to establish himself and undo a lot of the damage that Kelly did.

Biggest Questions Going into Summer Camp

1) Who become the Playmakers on Offense outside of Zac Ertz and Jordan Matthews that can make Big-Plays down the Field ?
Which WR’s Step-Up ? Agholor,Huff, Givens,Randle, TJ Graham ?

2) Can Darren Sproles squeeze 1 more Productive Year from his Body and Can Ryan Matthews remain Healthy for an entire Season which he hasn’t done in 5 Years and If Not, Who makes Plays from the Backfield (Kenjon Barner, Wendell Smallwood, Cedric O’Neal or Byron Marshall)

Defensively
Who is the Depth at LB and DT Positions
Can the DE Rotation of Barwin,Curry, Graham & Smith Create Consistent Pressure and combine to get 30 Sacks between them ?
Who Wins the Battle at CB in Terms of Starting

Special Teams
Can ST Coach Fipp add some new younger Players to the ST Core and remain as one of the Best Units in the NFL…
Does Kicker Parkey rebound completely healthy (which would be huge as Eagles Offense will likely had issues sustaining many or long TD Drives)

Coach’s
How do they Coordinate,Communicate & Game Plan with each other and the Players as the Season moves Forward.. How is the Game Clock, Time-Out, Beanie-Bag all handled which has been an issue with the Eagles

They should be better all around this year; The Oline is stronger, the D line is back to the 4-3 and plays to their strengths. They have 2 S’s and will use them (goodbye single high safety 100% of the time). The play calling on O will be better. The biggest q of the season will simply be…… who will be the playmakers on O? Chip let go/traded away all our playmakers…. do we have any now that can step up and make the catch?

The OL should be much improved in the Interior,
Also the TE’s will be used much more with Multiple TE Sets, IN motion and in various formations so Ertz, Burton and Celek could all have big Seasons and more Catches & TD Receptions than the Eagles pedestrian WR Corps

Defensive Line has Depth and the Secondary is overall more Talented and should be Improved .. The Question is Quality Depth at LB.. Hicks, Kendricks have a history of Injuries and the Eagles are very thin at LB Corp in terms of NFL Experience ..

Ive been hearing about how much our TE’s will be used for EONS… ill believe it when i see it. I dont care if it’s a “pop pass” or a “toss down the seams” .. it just needs to go from potential to be dominant to a reality.

They have depth on the D-Line?? I think Barwin, and Graham are rotation players at best but…

If Barwin, or Curry gets hurt what quality talent do they have behind them??

If Fletcher Cox gets hurt what quality talent is behind him?

How long have I been screaming for more talent at Linebacker??

There is still a major hole between Peters, and Kelce – The 3rd round rookie better be able to step in; Weisnewski is a journeyman lineman at best, but a better quality talent than what we have behind our starting front 7.

Nfl with it’s small rosters, high injury rate depth is an issue for every team. Most of the time no one knows how good the depth is until the injury happens. Most teams don’t have quality depth at multiple positions, in his respect the eagles are the norm. No one knows about your depth until it’s needed. Depth was a concern at LB last year until hicks stepped up and played well.

Denny you know I love the addition of Brandon Brooks; I have only been screaming for both he and Kelechi Osemele, on the Eagles since they were drafted.

But you see the same issues I see on the left side. I’m not as concerned about Jason Peters as others are, but LG is a problem for me.

So is LB depth – We don’t have any real threats to describe a consistent Pass Rush. For me Tulloch, and DeMeco ae the same player at this point – and they just got rid of DeMeco – but I’m sure they would be desperation options.

Cliff you can’t draft every player…. It’s simple mathematics.
Both those OL went in 12, that year the eagles drafted cox, Kendrick’s and Foles in the first three rounds.

You’re correct Ciggy we can’t draft everyone, but we can draft better; They don’t have to be all pros at every position, but they should be more talented than what we have.

Didn’t have to give up so much to get a QB this year, and should have drafted the best RB in the draft – Booker – in the 3rd round instead of reaching for a glorified center..

Shouldn’t have drafted Agholor the previous year, and have missed on so much talent in the draft over the last 8 years – the really blame for me goes to the GM’s exclusively.

When they get better at that Ciggy, then we’ll see more successful seasons, and possibly a Super Bowl win…..

As for Osemele, and Brooks….

The Eagles in 2012 had 2 -2nd round picks, and they chose Kendricks, and Curry.

I felt Curry could have been had in the 3rd. I wanted Bobby Wagner, and Kelechi Osemele – who was drafted after Curry – Two Perennial Pro Bowlers whiffed on…..

I wanted the Eagles to try to make a trade for another 3rd round pick to grab Curry. Instead they traded down with the Texans – and THEY drafted Brandon Brooks with the Eagles pick – and used the Texans pick to draft Foles.

Both could have been – and should have been had….

Ciggy, I never worked for the Rams – I admitted that, but you know I couldn’t have because I was still in High School.

I don’t work because I am technically disabled, but I am educated, and cognizant enough to be able to evaluate talent.

I would only draft consult for the Eagles anyway….

But I would have you on my Board of Directors Ciggy….

There is only ONE question— Can Sam I am play at his ‘high level, former number one potential’ or will he be injury riddled 16 TD’s 11 Ints Sam????
Its a QB driven league, he is our QB…. he plays well those other questions will be answered…

All of you are sleeping on us mad hard. I’m not sayin Super Bowl or anything like that. But we will be contending for the East this year without a doubt.

Romo will go down and best days are long behind him. Jason Witten is getting up there. Haven’t gotten 1 major injury at the oline position in how long? And that defense…. Scandrick had had 3 acls. No hardy or McClain with randy being suspended as well.

Giants spent 200 mill on 4 free agents with 0 pro bowls between them.
I understand Damon Harrison played beyond some monsters up in Ny, and janoris and Oliver can be nice as well.
But that have rb and oline questions as well. And I don’t trust Eli. He’s the hottest and coldest qb in the league.

Skins or Eagles will win the Divison this year. And thy are both favored last.

Put 100 dollars on Philly and u get 5 times ur money. Every time the least favored team in the east always wins it seems in the east

I just see philly having the best defense and special teams in the Divison. Especially defense as the year goes on and will be even better in year 2 under Jim.

Darren might be 33, but he’s never been an everydown back and had been underutiliZed his whole career nearly. He also has been healthy.
And when you are that small and quick a lot of things can go in ur favor cause of less wear and tear.

Split carries between him Ryan and Wendell and maybe see more of some barner?

Doug pederosn uses all his rbs differently unlike chip kelly who never changed the call regardless of who was in the game.

Another good question is can Kirk cousins beat a team with a winning record? He got exposed in that Green Bay game

I said “maybe” Kenjon.

And sure Sam can. He beat the jets and bills and patriots. And came damn near close to a few other victories if not for 12 drops total (2 being touchdowns) against Carolina. And don’t even get me started on the ATL game and skins game where we gave up a 95 yard drive and demarco basically fumbling in the endZone lol.

Philly will win the east this year

Sam Bradford beat the Jets, Bills, and Pats…lol..ok.

Against the Jets 1 TD, 0 Int’s
Bills, 1 TD-1 Int
Pats, 2 TD’s 0 Int’s. Truth is the Eagles defense and special teams deserve more credit for those victories than Sam Bradford. To say Sam was average in those games would be generous.
And came damn near close to a few more victories…lol…not horse shoes or hand grenades.

as I stated above. That’s why I believe philly will also win the east. Because of special teams and defense and an Inproved oline and Bradford.

And against the panthers Sam played out of his mind. His only pick was off the hands of Jordan Matthews. And had 12 drops.

He also had a sure fire touchdown to sproles and Ryan Matthew on two percently thrown wheel routes down the sideline.

The bills also. His only interception came off the hands off celek near the endzone. Leodis Mcklelvin made one helluva play on that ball and took it away from celek.

U guys need to look at the tape. Instead of being box score junkies 100 percent of the time

Been a while since we had the old QB debate. Silly.

We know what we have with the 3 qbs; we know Sam has to step up in order for us to compete. We know that Chase is here because he knows the system. and we know that Rook will take the reigns at some point. No doubt there. But unless Sam looks like P. Manning… its his last year here. The bigger q is what do we have at WR and RB… because those guys need to stick around for a while. Its as simple as that. I have not seen enough out of our “skilled players”.

CT
CT
July 22, 2016 8:44 pm

The funny thing is you can’t say that about any other qb in the league. Sam is 6-6 for being at the top of the league in drops.

It’s called being in a tough Divison and having Brandon Gibson has your number one wideout.

Then getting 2 knee injuries and being away from football for 2 years and coming to a Eagles team that had been dismantled and hurt by chip Kelly’s play calling and now allowing him to make any changes at the LoS.

Barely any help from the WR or oline position. Or the running backs for that matter.

And yet he still throw 20 tds. And 14 ints with half of them being off his own teams hands.

Sam will be improved. I expect around a 27-32 tD season with 11 ints.

Eagles win 9-10 games this season and make the postseason.

Sam is traded for a 2nd rounder 3rd minimum.

The funny thing is Sammy winning 9-10 games and making the post season….something he has never done. It’ll be more of the same excuses as you have rolled out from the past..poor wr play, no rb’s, etc..
Honestly, I hope he does play well so we can get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him, history suggests otherwise though.
20td’s…lets not forget a few of those td’s was in garbage time..the numbers do not tell the whole story!

Funny. Lol. Ottawa Redblacks QB Henry Burris broke his thumb…replaced by Trevor Harris who just snapped his knee….replaced by………

Brock Jensen.

Why do u care?

Brock Jensen was the ND State QB for the 3 years prior to Wentz.

kinda funny. anyway he is playing well ……..the irony of it is that the Redblacks play a modified version of Kelly’s Oregon offence….no huddle, high tempo, all flars and screens.

Funny

Rookies
Carson Wentz QB
Marcus Johnson wr- diamond in the rough? Wentz is already connecting with this speedy receiver who catches the ball cleanly with his hands. I believe these two can build a good chemistry for years to come.
Myke Tavarres LB
Alex McCalister LB/DE
Jaylon Smith CB
Quentin Gause LB

What if Bradford plays well? 30 tds and 12 ints and 8-10 wins? Players could give a damn about what the fans want. Thier NFL careers are short and if the players think they are building something with Bradford then you move him for Wentz and they have to take 2 steps back. its not going to be good. By all accounts everyone loves Bradford. Do you know how much pressure that would put on Wentz? They better hope Bradford sucks or gets injured. I keep hearing fans say they hope Bradford has a good year to get a high draft pick. How do you think that would go over in the locker room?

However unlikely scenario that is, it would be great. It is the contingency the eagles paid the $1.2 million dollar insurance policy for.

If he plays great, they have him under contract for the following season.

Everyone loved Bret Favre, both fans and players alike, but when it came time to move on to Aaron Rodgers everyone accepted it….Favre and the Packers were 13-3 when they moved on to Rodgers.

There’s nothing short of winning the super bowl that can get Bradford a new contract in 2018.

I don’t see Bradford as being a very tough act to follow for Wentz….

The huge mistake is that Bradford is still on the team

The starter on this team should be Carson Wentz…Period!

He should be getting reps with the first team!

It is still inconceivable that you would move up in the draft, get the No#2 pick that you project as a franchise QB…..and sit him on the bench to “learn”

And stop talking about Aaron Rodgers the 24# pick in the draft who was behind a Hall of Fame (overrated but still a HOF) QB!

If the Kid talent is showing up in OTA’s and pre-season you got to get his ass on the field.

Period!
