Thoughts From Eagles-Colts

huff2Eagles Give Strong Showing In Dress Rehearsal

There were a great deal of positives to report from Indianapolis, as the Eagles turned in good efforts on both sides of the ball.

The Birds’ first-team offense had their best showing to date, consistently moving the football and making plays on their way to 17 points in the first half alone.

The offensive line, with another new starter in Stefan Wisniewski, did a good job protecting Sam Bradford, and allowed the veteran quarterback to facilitate the offense well. Bradford was sharp, completing 12 of 14 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Bradford then led the team on a scoring drive to start the second half before leaving for the evening.

Dorial Green-Beckham played a number of snaps with the first team, and made his presence known. Green-Beckham made a fade route look easy, coming down with his first touchdown as an Eagle.

The only blemish from the starting offense came off of the clumsy hands of Nelson Agholor, who dropped what should have been an easy reception, and turned it into a turnover that led to an Indianapolis field goal.

Defense Looks Ready To Go

I don’t have a single bad thing to say about Jim Schwartz’s defense.

Schwartz’s unit has looked strong all preseason, and they look like they’re fired up and ready to go for the regular season.

Tonight, Schwartz’s group dominated against Andrew Luck and the first team offense of the Colts.

The defense rose to every challenge thrown their way.

After an early turnover in the first quarter, the red zone defense tightened up and forced the Colts to settle for a field goal. Later in the half, the stopped Indy on a fourth-and-one attempt. The pass rush generated constant pressure, and picked up three sacks in the first half alone.

To this point, we’ve yet to see any major weaknesses on the first-team defense. The defensive line looks strong and deep, with everyone from starters to reserves like Beau Allen making contributions. The secondary looks solid, and new additions Rodney McLeod and Leodis McKelvin look to be excellent additions.

This has been a fun group to watch so far, and I’m excited to see this defense get their first crack at regular season action in the coming weeks.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • Stefan Wisniewski seemed to hold up well at left guard, starting in place of injured Isaac Seumalo. The offensive line depth has come along way from the disgraceful state that Chip Kelly decided to enter the season with a year ago.
  • Josh Huff had one of his best performances as an Eagle tonight, playing with a sense of urgency in effort to keep his job. Huff caught two passes for 60 yards, including a 38-yard catch and run that set up the team’s first field goal. Huff also scored the club’s first touchdown on a redzone end-around run, a well-designed and executed play.
  • Nelson Agholor looks more and more like a bust with each passing game. His drops are just flat out inexcusable.
  • Rueben Randle didn’t make an appearance until the second half. He seems to be on the outside looking in at the wide receiver position.
  • Paul Turner just keeps making plays.
  • Trey Burton was involved with the offense throughout the night, something that I hope carries over to the regular season.
  • We got a brief look at Wendell Smallwood before he left with a concussion.
  • Kenjon Barner continues to look strong.

Defense

  • C.J. Smith saw time with the first-team defense before Eric Rowe. I think there’s a decent chance the Eagles will try to trade Rowe before the final cuts.
  • Rodney McLeod made two really nice plays. McLeod broke up a pass intended for Frank Gore on a third-and-goal in the first quarter that forced Indy to settle for three.
  • Stephen Tulloch didn’t appear until late in the game.
  • Bennie Logan, Beau Allen, and Connor Barwin all picked up sacks.
  • Mychal Kendricks saw his first action of the preseason, and appeared to overrun a couple of plays.

Special Teams

  • Cody Parkey missed an extra point, likely ending the kicking battle between him and Caleb Sturgis.
  • Ed Reynolds missed a block, resulting in a blocked punt and Indy’s first touchdown.

Final Thoughts

I thought one thing that was apparent in the difference in approaches by Doug Pederson and Chip Kelly was on display tonight.

Throughout the Kelly era, we frequently would question the way certain players were used in the offense. Guys who seemingly flashed good ability were often ignored and forgotten, while others were used in ways that didn’t properly take advantage of the skillsets they brought to the table.

Pederson seems to be the opposite.

Whether it was using Green-Beckham’s size on a fade route, Trey Burton in three-tight end sets, or Josh Huff on a jet sweep, Pederson is showing that he may be able to find ways to work with what he’s given, and put players in a good position to succeed, a trait very important for successful head coaches.

Dak as a rookie will only be able to take the Cowboys so far.

Kirk cousins will be exposed this season like he was in that playoff game. Dude cannot beat a team with a winning record.

And I’m predicting a down year for ODB finally. Just a personal feeling.

Giants oline is a mess. Not just from a protection standpoint, but in the run game as well. Defense will be nothing special either. Expect an undisciplined giants team as always.

Eagles win Divison.

7 wins as our floor 10 wins as our cieling if we stay healthy.

Oh. Jared Goff will be a bust. Believe it or not.

Continue to love what I see out of defense: Brandon Graham, Logan, Cox and Curry all look very good. Good depth on d line. Beau Allen can play

Nice to see Huff make plays, like I’ve been stating, once he gets the ball in his hands he can be explosive. Trey Burton will play an important role in this offense and DGB will be a terrific red-zone weapon…something we’ve been missing. good trade Howie!
Agholor continues to be unimpressive and disappoint…something is missing with him that is hurting his ability to make the transition to a NFL WR.
Ryan Mathews looked good and Sproles is going to do what Sproles does.
O line looked solid and Bradford was consistent and steady..safe passes…taking care of the ball..no wow, flash or sizzle…but steady.

Carson Wentz is going to be taking over A Team way more talented and developed than what Sam has been playing with.

Future is bright for this team and people are sleeping on us mad hard like I have been saying..

Oh, and Coach Doug Pederson is showing me something, I’m impressed with how he’s handled adversity and distractions from Agholor to Lane, and of course how he has called plays, managed time and time outs as well as putting players in position to turn their strengths and talent into on field production. He’s a better coach than Chip already.

CT, you and I have had our differences in the past, but, I wholeheartedly agree with you 100%. The Eagles will be a force to reckon with in the near future..I’m excited about the Eagles and where they are headed. Future franchise QB is locked up and this team will continue to build the offense around Wentz. Defense is tight.

what I learned watching a pre season game ,was stark.TheEagles on carpet are very agile and built for speed ..something to watch ,going forward ..If this is a vanilla offense ,by the new coach ,sign me up for the 31 favors .Seriously ,he’s got more formations already than chip showed us in multiple years ..He opened eyes and may have already saved huffs trade value and or. Eagle career by understanding his attributes , better than his college coach ..thanks coach P ..putting the rock in his hands is half the battle ..Schwartz vs Billy D …is so stark as well..it’s a cumulative effect to have personnel changes ,but the schemes and how to utilize and maximize guys is so tied to both these coaches ..so far ..

I must admit yes..I had expected that the head. Coach ,would be overmatched..all admittedly true..he obviously has now all bat channels in the on position…technology and his icoach apprach. Have me erecting a bust in canton this week..serious point..what always befuddled us all last year was why run a hurry up offense ,raising the possibility that you may go 3 and out or even score quickly, and as a result put billy Duh. Out there ? Check mark for that being coached differentially.Red zone formations that are predictable are less likely to be successful..check mark..if nothing else changes, these two subtractions by addition will matter

Well said.. People claim preseason does not matter..Which is doesnt in terms of wins and losses.

But if your starters come out and suck, then you should be worried.

Remember Sam did NOT play in week 1 and 4 of the preseason last year. He played 1-2 series against the ravens week 2 and only a quarter against the Packers week 3.

The preseason champs” label was blown out of proportion when sam barely played. This year hes healthier, had a full offseason. and looks night in day better compared to last year.

17-20 last night with 2 being drops and another being a poorly ran route by Dorial.

I did not watch the game as I forgot it was on… Watching highlights however the D line is for real…. As a group will have a ton of sacks this year. They work as a unit and the guy that ends up with the sack is immaterial because the combinations are what’s getting it done.
Sammy sleeves has earned a spot in the preseason HOF. He is remarkable in the end of August. I’m still holding out hope he plays us into the playoffs and a sweet pick or two.

We do have to remember we are beating up on a terrible built colts team. What that organization has done the last few years is disgraceful. This is not the same organization when Dungy was there. And even though they have the same owner he has taken a turn for the worse.

BUT at the same time we are not running the hurry up offense this year which is what takes teams off guard in the preseason more then anything. Look aT the 49ers 300 yard half for example!

The eagles had allowed 1 touchdown, 12 points and forced 11 turnovers in 12 preseason quarters.

Not only did the starters look good week 1 but also looked alot better then most think in week 2 against the steelers. Offense was moving the ball and if not for multiple penalties, and drops then we definatley would had put points on the board.

I was originally on board with keeping Sam, and drafting Zeke with the 8th pick.

But after watching what Howie has pulled off the last 6 months has the chance to be all time record breaking similar to what the GOAT Sam Hinkie pulled off with our Sixers!!

Hinkie built a loser to acquire picks…. We have no idea if he had what it takes to build a team. Yes he got us Simmons but the key is the nucleus around the star in hoops.
What howie is doing is building a team… The trade for DGB MAY turn out to be a steal… The drafting of logan, cox and curry was under rated and a few of those picks criticized on gcobb

By no means do I get excited over preseason, but let’s be honest…..preseason only “doesn’t matter” when the team performs opposite of individuals projections. Most people in this board think the EAGLES will suck this year, mostly due to their lack of belief in Bradford. So I guarantee you if the offense struggled last night you wouldn’t be hearing a lick about how the preseason doesn’t matter.

Much like game two of the preaseason.

Be grateful for what Sam did for the Sixers.

Rice stated: I’m watching Niners vs Packers and hate the read option offense. Can we bring back old football..just saying!!!

I’m not bashing the Niners. It throws the timing off. No rhythm. Great players need chemistry and timing!!!!

lmao…Rice is not happy with Chip’s offense. 49ers offense looked like crap against the Pack…plenty of 3 and outs and the 49er defense was on the field a ton. More of the same..so glad that fraud is San Fran’s problem now…I get to sit back and laugh.

Philadelphia’s offensive line is in better shape entering the season then every single team in our division besides Dallas. Shit we are probably near the upper part of the league compared to some teams out there like New york.

The line will be fine. Slowing things down is only going to help and with the Addition of Brandon Brooks and Stephen W is very impactful providing depth and a starter.

I really liked what I saw from Winenski (spelled wrong) last night along with what Issaac has shown considering how much time he missed.

Jason Peters and Kelce will have rebound years as well with a more slowed down approach.

We are sorry even though the 27 year old finally healthy and put in a position to succeed put up 4000 yards 30 tds and 12 ints and led us to a 10-6 record we have to let him go for the Div TT unknown never played a down in the NFL Wentz. We may have to regress for possibly 2 year. Yeah that will go over well in the locker room. You know how much pressure Wentz would have on him?

The script is written, the cast is set and the plan is in motion. All the other stuff is pre Wentz draft hope that went unfulfilled.

The players nor their feelings have no influence on roster decisions.

Common sense tells you that when a player has torn his knee up twice he had no offseason to do any football activities only rehab he is going to be apprehensive and tentative when he returned. Then you put him in a mickey mouse system where the fucking defense knew the plays as being told by all the players. You give him the worst set of receivers “no debate”.Then you dont let him audible out of bad plays as your trying to “quick pitch” on every play what the fuck did you expect to happen? Amazing when you get a rehab free offseason and a real NFL “huddle up offense” your dropping dimes all over the field. Should of never drafted Wentz and never gave up picks and just built the team with a healthy, young and true #1 pick from a actual big time college. Wentz started 1 year for a division 2 school got hurt and his backup led NDS to the championship game if you really want to know the real deal.. Wentz would of had to walk on at Oklahoma. He would of been like Rudy down there.

If you don’t work hard and comitt 110 % to your craft, Coaches and Teammates, you will not be onthe Roster and I kinda of like it this way..
Givens, Randle, TJ Graham, Mike Martin were all signed as a Free-Agents and given opportunities to prove themselves to the Coach’s and none of them impressed enough to keep around

DesetEagle I understand all that with Bradford shortcomings but I’m trying to look at the odds.I look at the positives and negatives. Positives. Bradford looks like a great teammate and a good guy. He is smart. He is still young. He is accurate. Negatives. He gets hurt. He hasn’t performed to a higher level because of himself and his circumstances. Then I look at Wentz. Wentz can we realy check off any box for him yet besides young and seems football smart. Bradford has less boxes to check off. IMO.

All of them ..is the answer ..as to how many sec teams Wentz would start for ..as at number 2 NFL pick I’d say he has a lock on that job according to men in suits ,whose job ,is talent evaluation..your other attributes ..he’s a good team mate ? He took his ball and went home when he caught wind of a high pick coming in here to compete ..he’s a whining bitch ..good team mate ? I’d say ,a good teammate inspires other with there actions ..(he whines) he makes guys better …haven’t seen any indication of that ..All he does is become an apologist for why he’s always underperforming ..with more excuses than talent ..look at his body of work ..it has police tape surrounding it…Saturday he had a clean pocket vs Indy (who looks awful) but ,let’s also not lose sight of last years Green Bay pre season game ..kool and songs came from under there rocks ,spewing this same Sam the former number. One pick is the best thing since slice bread ..lets all understand ..Wentz is our future ..Sam is our present ..lets just hope the two make your argument hold water and he’s putting good “real competitive” games on film ..something btw he’s never accomplished ..lets bubble wrap him ..hope another QB goes down and his stock begins rising ,causing him to then be the mvp on our roster ..more for what he can yield ,rather than produce ..

2016 Draft – Emmanual Mundiay 6-5 PG
2017 Draft – Keron Iverson 6-8 SF

this was pretty unreasonable cliff.

G – Russell Westbrook 6-5
G – Josh Jackson 6-7
C – Jahlil Okafor 7-0
F – Giannis Adetkoumbo 7-0
F – Ben Simmons 6-10

pretty unrealistic getting both adet josh jackson and west. but ill admit cliff the lineups im seeing you post arent totally unrealistic

How is it unrealistic, when the Sixers have boo koo money to spend, and Giannis, and Westbrook were pending free agents at the time??…and Jackson Is a presumed top 5 pick??…..

LeBron was a pipe dream; I wasn’t even serious. But, Cousins name has been in trade rumors for years – so that wasn’t unrealistic either.

I always post a 1st team(starters), 2nd team, and 3rd team = so where are they in these repost?? – They’re mostly draft picks.

LOL!! ….and all you could find were 3 posted lineups over a 3 year period huh???……There are much more that prove MY point, but to support your claim you omitted those – like I said you would….LOL

That’s okay Big Mhenski – I’m flattered

That’s all the lineups I found. All of them. And I trimmed mostly everything but starting 5… How is it unrealistic? Because Westbrook wasn’t a free agent and neither was adept. So u were trading for both them without giving up okafor or Simmons and you’re doing all that and still getting Josh Jackson

Lmfao. U seriously need me to explain that? Bob as fuck that was never happening

BOTH WERE SCHEDULED TO BE FA IN 2017….When Hinke’s plan was suppose to reap benefits that’s how….

The Sixers have possibly 2 top 5 picks in the first round to get Jackson.

Simmons was this draft. Jackson is in the next draft..

and no I’m not giving up Okafor…….do you understand now….this was 2 drafts in the making, leading up to the 2017 free agency…..It’s called proactive thinking.

Give me in Free Agency next year : Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Giannis Adetkumbo, trade for DeMarcus Cousins

– add to an already drafted Emmanuel Mudiay(2015), Mario Hezonia(2015), Joel Embiid(2014), Dario Saric(2014), Jaylen Brown(2016), Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk(2016), and EC Matthews(2016) – and we a much closer to a Championship team…

G – Emmanuel Mudiay 6-5
G – Kevin Durant 6-10
C – DeMarcus Cousins 6-11
F – Anthony Davis 6-10
F – Giannis Adetkumbo 6-10
