Thoughts From Eagles-Browns

wentzWentz Shines In Eagles’ Debut

Carson Wentz entered the field on the team’s opening drive, and gave fans all kinds of encouraging signs.

Wentz’s most impressive moments came when he delivered a pair of picture-perfect throws on the team’s first drive. Wentz hit on attempts to Zach Ertz and Jordan Matthews, and in both cases put the ball in spots where only his receivers could get them.

The throw to Ertz resulted in a key first down, the toss to Matthews gave the Birds their first points of the season.

Wentz came back in the second half, and on a fourth-and-four, stood tall in the face of a blitz, and delivered a strike to Ertz to extend the drive. On the next play, the rookie went for the kill, connecting with Nelson Agholor on a 35-yard touchdown.

Wentz didn’t commit a single turnover.

The stage wasn’t too big for Wentz. His mistakes were minimal, and as far as a rookie performances go, you couldn’t possibly ask for more out of the first-time starter.

Schwartz Defense Performs As Advertised

Jim Schwartz’s defense more than did their part during today’s victory.

Schwartz’s defense gave up only 10 points, and both of Cleveland’s scoring drives were fueled by either fluke plays or penalties. On the first score, the Eagles stopped the Browns on a third and goal, but a questionable pass interference call on Malcolm Jenkins gave Isiah Crowell an opportunity to punch it in.

At the start of the second half, a bizarre play in which Corey Coleman beat a triple-coverage to come down with a 50-yard reception set Cleveland up for a field goal attempt, their final score of the day.

The defense was stout throughout the game, applying pressure on Robert Griffin, holding the injury-prone quarterback to just 190 passing yards, no touchdowns, and an interception, while sacking him three times.

Pederson Gets Everyone Involved

I thought Doug Pederson did a very nice job in his first game as head coach.

Pederson had a sound gameplan in place, did a good job taking advantage of his personnel, and varied his formations well. Nine different skill position players touched the ball, including all four running backs.

The Eagles didn’t waste any timeouts, and dominated time of possession, 39:20-20:33.

The Birds had a number of long, sustained drives that chewed time off of the clock and wore the Cleveland defense down.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • It took Doug Pederson only one game to do what Chip Kelly refused to do in three seasons: line up Zach Ertz as a wide receiver. Ertz split out early in the game, and caught a key reception on the team’s opening drive.
  • On the Eagles’ second scoring drive, why was Dorial Green-Beckham not involved in the goalline package on third and goal? Pederson called the right play, a fade, but called it for the wrong receiver (Jordan Matthews). Matthews doesn’t have the size or leaping ability to get himself separation in that situation. For Green-Beckham not to get the call in that spot, is ridiculous.
  • Green-Beckham finished with two catches for 14 yards.
  • Big game for Jordan Matthews, who pulled down seven receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown. Matthews did have a couple of bad drops, but was a key factor in today’s win.
  • Solid game for Ryan Matthews, who gained 77 yards on 22 carries, and scored a touchdown.
  • Kenjon Barner took four carries for 42 yards, including a 19-yard run in the second half.
  • Darren Sproles had a couple of uncharacteristic drops.
  • Nelson Agholor woke up for this game, coming down with four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.
  • Ertz finished with six catches for 58 yards, picking up a number of key first downs.
  • Tight end Trey Burton was among the inactives for today’s game, the third-year man couldn’t go after sustaining an injury to his calf during Friday’s practice.
  • Matt Tobin came in on the team’s three tight end sets to replace Burton.
  • Beau Allen took a couple of snaps at fullback.

Defense

  • Rodney McLeod made a couple of great plays in the first half. McLeod stuffed a run for a loss on Cleveland’s second possession, and came down with a key interception that took away a scoring opportunity from the Browns.
  • Nigel Bradham led the team with five tackles.
  • Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, and Connor Barwin each recorded a sack.
  • Nolan Carroll was in good position on a long reception by Terrell Pryor, but the receiver just made a good play on the ball.
  • Leodis McKelvin left the game with a hamstring injury.

Special Teams

  • Caleb Sturgis missed a 44-yard attempt in the first half.
  • Sturgis would drill his next two attempts.
  • Donnie Jones and the coverage unit pinned the Browns inside their own five-yard line twice.
  • Sproles set up the team’s first field goal with a 40-yard punt return.

Final Thoughts

This start to the season was about everything an Eagles fan could hope for.

It’s so refreshing to see the team with a legitimate franchise quarterback prospect in place, and the organization with a sound long-term plan.

There’s no more smoothies. No more tempo. No more disregard for time of possession and snaps for the defense. No more devaluing talented players.

The future is here for the Philadelphia Eagles. Another winnable matchup with the Chicago Bears awaits next week.

An excellent start for Wentz and Pederson.
The defense was very stout short of a handful of fluky plays.

RG3 looked pretty shaken and gimpy by the end.

I was listening to their radio station, mixed crowd. Some people were okay with trade and feels more time is needed for Browns to get QB. Some callers were upset about passing on Wentz. Also mentioned how Browns passed on Big Ben.

Probowl Browns cornerback speaks on Carson Wentz’s debut

“I think he did a really good job,” Haden said following the Eagles’ win at Lincoln Financial Field. “He’s more advanced than I expected him to be. He’s a good quarterback. He stands in the pocket. He makes all of the throws. He’s very patient. He doesn’t just take off running all the time. He looks down and figures out which receiver he wants to go to.”

Wentz made perhaps the best throw of his NFL debut on a 35-yard touchdown to Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor along the sideline with a perfectly thrown pass, not backing down from attacking Haden.

“It was a really good ball,” Haden said of the touchdown. “I have to be on top. I was running with the receiver, it was an outside-shoulder throw, he threw a really good ball. It was a really good play. They made a play right there. It was a good pass and a really good route.”

Despite just being named the Eagles’ starting quarterback on Wednesday, Wentz looked ahead of his time, according to Haden.

“His patience,” Haden said, when asked what stood out the most to him about the North Dakota State product chosen with the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft. “I was expecting like most rookies, once his first read wasn’t here he’d take off running. He did a really good job if the first-look wasn’t there of going to the second-read.

“He’s really elusive back there. He just did a really good job of being patient and reading the coverage.”

Here is what Eagles players said about Carson Wentz following the Browns game

“He’s a special, special player,” tight end Zach Ertz said after the game.

Whether he can keep this up remains to be seen, but at least on Sunday, Wentz looked every bit the player that the team traded two first-round picks up draft at No. 2 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Here is what Wentz’s teammates had to say about the rookie after the win:

Wide receiver Josh Huff: “Carson did an excellent job handling the offense and getting everyone ready to play. He did an excellent job all game…I’m excited for the future with him. He played exactly how I knew he was capable of playing. He demanded the huddle.”

Tight end Zach Ertz: “Honestly, I’m not surprised, but it was very impressive for him to go out there and put together a complete game…I thought he did an unbelievable job today…He put the ball where it needed to be…The thing that everyone doubted us was because we had a rookie quarterback, but we knew what we had in the building all along with Carson. He is a special, special player. He didn’t play like a rookie today by any means. To make your first start on pretty much eight days notice, and to have no turnovers, speaks volumes about his play

Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz made his NFL debut on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns in the Eagles’ 29-10 victory. Here’s a look at how he did.

Wide receiver Nelson Agholor: “He is a great football player and is a great competitor. That is what comes down to being poised like that. He understands what the game is going to be. He is going to take some hits and he is going to make some plays.”

Offensive linemen Lane Johnson: “He took the team by the reigns and it’s his team now. He did a good job. I’m proud of him…He was confident. Usually the first couple series everybody is jittery, and it takes a while to get in a rhythm, but he was confident all the way through.”

Defensive end Brandon Graham: “He was poised, and he managed the game really good. His hard counts was good to give him a look on what they were doing. His deep ball was on point. I can’t say nothing bad. All I can say is he is going to keep getting better, and that’s what I can’t wait to see.”

Quarterback Chase Daniel: “I thought he handled it really well. He was able to come back to the sidelines, and we had a routine with me, Frank (Reich) to talk about what we saw and what plays were going to run on the next series, and he was very comfortable with everything.”

Obviously it’s only one game, but the kid showed that he can be cool, calm, and collected. He controlled the pace of the game, made great presnap reads, and his TD passes were absolutely beautiful. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Browns, he put balls where they should be, and he beat a top corner in Haden on a gorgeous deep ball (Haden even admitted how bad he got beat). His ceiling is considerably higher than Bradford’s. With this being said, we need to see him face adversity and how he responds when the chips are down. From what we’ve seen and know so far, it looks like he’ll handle it like a pro. Birds fans have every right to be excited and celebrate this W. We’ll have our hiccups this year, but the future is brighter than ever…oh, and we still have the picks we need to keep building through the draft.

I know you guys were at your keyboards today ready and waiting to pounce on the send button as soon as Wentz threw a pick, fumbled or just played poorly.
Maybe next week..frauds!

Little stat. Sam Bradford has only thrown for 275 yards 2 TD’s 0 int’s 2x’s in his pro career.

Carson Wentz went 22-37 278 2 TD’s 0 int’s 101 QBR in his first pro game.

Being wrong on the kid ,is the most gratifying part of the optics today..He looked as focused as razor sharp as an elite assassin ..he commanded respect ,he earned a leadership mantel in praise..You married a rookie coach and a rookie starting QB and made a statement against the Cleveland front office .He was fueled by the yapping ,and took it and shoved it down there asses…the locker room was watching and Carson knew it..That was cool to watch..His elite darts were breathtaking to see a ball arrive in stride vs a wounded quali …The throws ,with the exception of a touch pass ,executed better ,were very impressive ..WHAT I KEEP HEARING “is kool …Sam is the franchise best QB. ..in one game that ,was the taj Boyd epitaph moment ..

Yeah Doug deserves praise. 4th and 4 on the 40 he called a slant to Ertz for a 5 yard first down completion in a 15-10 score board game. Very next play Pederson called for Wentz to air it out to Agholor for a 35 yard TD. Pederson willed the team to win.

Great Win –
game changing play was the Brown’s Center Erving launching a safety 2 point turnover which resulted in a Agholor TD off the safety punt kickoff.
Doug Pederson called a 4th down play which Wentz connected to Ertz for a 1st down. Wow, Pederson deserves a high five.
Huff dropped another pass which Agholor snatched up on the deflection.
Browns are bad ( I don’t think they win a game this year.) I think the Browns get lapped on the scoreboard every week.

Wentz looked great today..the kid does not look intimidated what so ever. Granted it was a Browns D that isn’t very good, but what impressed me was his poise in the pocket, and not allowing to turn the ball over. A meeting with the Bears Monday night will be another good test for Wentz

Vs the blitz:

Carson Wentz 8-8 94 yards, audibled at los and stood in the pocket under blitz pressure and delivered strikes in tight windows when he knew he was going to get hit. Ray Horton blitzed early, after Carson kept beating his blitz packages, Horton stopped the heavy blitzes.

Preseason mvp hall of famer Dak Prescott 3-8 22 yards

We should have drafted Dak and not mortgaged the future…lol

Very exciting time to be an eagles fan.

Crazy part of this is that we essentially traded Maxwell, Kiko, Bradford and a Second Round draft pick to move from 13 to 2 and select a potential franchise QB. That is still baffling to me.

I said it before the game and i’ll say it again, no reason this team cannot go 8-8 or better. Too much talent to go 5-11 or 6-10. And, if Wentz plays as a future franchise QB should (he got off to a great start yesterday) then the team should be just fine.

I still think the people (fans and media) projecting 5-11 and 6-10 were hedging their potential for disappointment if Wentz didnt look like the real deal. I’d be willing to bet we have a lot of changed predictions today.

Cantakeitanymore, you were/are a part of the Eagles should not draft a rookie QB high in the draft crew given your stance on QB Sam Bradford.

This stuff cracks me up. You guys really just refuse to accept reality. it’s comical.

Once again, it would make NO sense for the Eagles to spend a high pick on a QB when they are clearly hoping Bradford pans out. But keep hoping and dreaming. Believe all the “reports” to make it easier on yourselves.

Eagle – You are taking comments I made before all of the trades panned out. I still think Bradford is a good QB and think he will have a lot of success this year in Minn. I think things were trending well for him and it was worth another year to see what he had. I’m not going back on that at all.

My comments were made based on the long standing history of making big trades to move up and take a risk in the draft. However, sitting here now, after the trades panned out, seeing what Howie pulled off – it was a no brainier.

As I’ve stated, the guy essentially traded three players and a 2nd round pick to draft Wentz at number 2. I’ve praised that all along and been on board.

My belief in Bradford, but agreement in the direction of the franchise are not mutually exclusive. On April 14, 2016 I believed that getting up to 2 was going to cost too much, it was going to be very risky, and we had a QB that (in my opinion) was poised for a nice year.

However, considering where we stand today (9/12/2016) and even last week before Wentz played – I stated that I was on board.

How long did it take you to dig those comments up tho…..you must not have much going on in your life to spend time digging through old G-Cobb comments.

Eaglehaslanded
Eaglehaslanded
September 12, 2016 10:50 am

canttakeit..lol, it did not take me long to dig them up. You littered the board with this Bradford don’t take a rookie QB high in the draft stuff. You, kool and CT all sounded the same. Actually, I am recovering from surgery I had done on Friday, so yes I’m home bored with nothing to do but heal, so I have time on my hands to bust people trying to pull the wool over our (Anti Sam Crew) eyes.

Your post says something different. You were lock stock and barrel on board with keeping Sam Bradford and not wanting to take a chance on drafting a potential stud QB… and were snarky about it. Don’t get bothered because I called you out on it, embrace it, like you’re attempting to do with the Eagles current situation. To be successful in business you have to be risk averse and willing to take chances. Not play it safe all the time. The Eagles identified a player they really liked and went after him (Wentz) who in his first game did something Sam Bradford ionly has done twice in his entire career. Threw for 278, 2 TD’s, 0 ints. QBR 101.0

I have more time to dig further, actually I already have..plenty of your posts are available regarding this that is antithetical to your current position.

Eagle –

First, my bad on the personal attack while you are recovering from surgery. Best of luck and get well soon.

Second, I think I have done more than distinguished myself from the likes of CT and Kool even if we share similar points of view.

Third, you are missing the point on the Bradford v. Wentz stuff. The issue I had back before the draft was that I didn’t want to trade what it typically requires to move up and take a risk at the QB position. I believed that we had a very solid QB and that the risk of trading up wasn’t worth the projected bounty. I understand the need to take risks, but I felt that no unestablished player is worth the multiple high draft picks that it would take to move up to number 2.

History is littered with teams doing just that and getting burned. I liked our QB situation and didn’t think the risk was worth it.

HOWEVER, after all the chips fell, I haven’t said a negative thing about the current situation. Howie managed to take a middle of the pack team, move up to draft a QB, AND barely trade anything to do it. He took the bounty that I was originally worried about completely out of the equation.

Now, I will say that once Wentz was here I did say that he should probably sit for a year and let Bradford see what he could do. But after Minn threw a 1st round pick plus our way, again – no brainer.

I stick by what I say in the moment based on what I see. But, I am not one who refuses to change positions after the fact once everything shakes out.

I’m not “trying to accept” what I am seeing. I am excited about it (what true fan wouldn’t be).

The Mount Rushmore of Sam I am was chiseled to ruins in four quarters of a div 2 QB who had less reps. Than a virgin in a whore house and was a stud..

Wrong Henski.. I applauded GM Roseman for the Bradford Trade to the Vikings and was elated for getting what he did for such a dink and dunk passer who never won anything and is such non-leader in Sam Bradford.. My displeasure was the Eagles/Pedersen’s “Stated Plan”, of sitting Wentz behind Bradford/Daniel for 2016, after moving up in the Draft and Trading away Future Assets to get him, which was very similar to your own Position, if you want to dig up old Post’s..I had very little interest in watching a Bradford Led Eagles Team in 2016 as a “Lame-Duck” QB.
I didn’t see the Game yesterday, as it was not on down here and I was busy Painting my Back Deck on a gorgeous day, but the Eagles & Wentz looked very Good in their Win over the Browns and the Eagles Coaching Staff did a Nice Job in Game Planning/Scheming and Wentz made some great Reads & Passes and the Receivers actually made some nice Catch’s which was great to see when watching Highlights last evening..
There will be bumps in the road for Wentz and the Eagles, but a very strong start so far and hopefully he and the Offense and Coach’s can keep this moving forward over the Bears and Veteran DC Vic Fangio next Monday Night in Chicago which will be a their Home Opener and a Hostile Environment for Wentz to Play in which will make a nice challenge… and its on National TV so I will actually be able to Watch the Game Live for a change
My Fall Schedule is crazy this year and I will have to rely on Highlights, Articles, Stats, Re-Broadcasts,Talking Heads and some of Posters here take on things, for I will simply not be able to watch many Day games this Season as in year’s past.. Its the way it is for me this Season…

Carson Wentz will have his hiccups..we all get that ..it’s only a question of how he reacts after that ,that will be the trajectory he ascends to..every hall of farmer at the position had very little success ,early ..needing to take his lumps, and feel the game is too fast ,too big and too much to process..Yesterdaythe leadership qualities ,reading the hot receivers ,having the trust of his rookie coach to calla fourth and four? makes me believing Eve that what I was saying the “coach speak” that Sam is our guy ,was just a smoke screen ..They knew what they had ,and kept all the fans ,assuming he’d be dressed in civvies on this his inaugural season ..what an audible that turned out to be ?

What I don’t understand is how the Rams and Browns didn’t see it…. Maybe that’s why they are the Browns and rams

They will be back to either discount this week because it was “only against the Browns” or when he has a bad week which will probably happen at some point.

Very happy how things worked themselves out. Was ready for a boring season with much predictability with Bradford. Knowing the outcome of the season before it began. Really wanted Wentz to be the starter when he was drafted, made no sense to leave a player on the bench who is just as good as the veterans…I’m not saying the possible outcome has changed…I expect Wentz to have some struggles to look like a rook at times. But the kid played well. Great Start!
I liked the play calling which I think helped Wentz feel comfortable. HC did a good job, had a nice game plan.

The defense was solid. Would of liked to see a little more pressure being generated. Dont need the sack but a little more pressure. Against a better team it could hurt us. Graham and Cox got to the QB…expect to see those two in the backfield a lot this season.

WR were better than expected…Very solid game for Matthews, Ertz made a great catch on the first drive. Agholar had some production.

With that said, the Browns looked terrible…they are not the measuring stick, one week, one game at a time.

Lets go Eagles!

E0S, what happened to Carson Wentz being a running QB who needed to run to make plays. Yesterday Wentz stayed in the pocket, read the defense, audibled, looked off the safeties and threw strikes in tight windows. Clearly, his mobility is an asset that he can use, but, he clearly does not go running as soon as his first read is taken away…he goes to the 2nd or 3rd option. wentz is a pocket passer who happens to be mobile and can use his legs to extend plays in the pocket.

it is Cleveland, the second worst team in the NFL behind Tennessee last year and they got worse in the off season because they are in complete tear down mode. Eagles safeties stunk for a decade and Cleveland is starting one of those horrible safeties who couldn’t even make the Eagles practice squad ( Jordan Poyer). Wentz played well but Cleveland is the basement.
Don’t think I don’t remember the fawning you had for Jared Goff’s slong that you’ve been slurping on for 2 years.

He did throw at an all-pro corner a few times and had success–
the ‘yeah its cleveland’ argument only holds so much water– could counter with ‘yeah he only had 39 snaps in preseason’ or ‘he didn’t play big time college’ or ‘we mortgaged the future’… the yeah but its cleveland thing…. they are in the nfl, they have a coach that was coveted by many teams, they do have some good veterans, they have a highly respected DC…

Cleveland started 2 rookie DE in Nassib and Ogbah also a 2nd Year DT in Shelton. They aren’t a serious team. Wentz is going to have to play on the road this year from behind on the scoreboard. Pederson called Read run/pass option all day long. It is in the play book. It is a staple play for him. He is going to keep the ball and run on those read pass/run option play calls this year.

So because it was cleveland it doesn’t count? interesting.
he won’t average 2 designed runs a game… just won’t happen.

those plays were called this Sunday. It is an Option!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wentz chose to hand the ball off to the RB and he also chose to pass the ball to Matthews and Ertz on the pass/ run option. When Carson Wentz & Doug Pederson’s offense is scouted by the upcoming playoff teams on the schedule to take away those 2 parts of the run/pass option he is going to run.

You said in order for Wentz to be successful he has to run because he’s a running QB. His play on Sunday proved you wrong.

I liked Goff and wanted the eagles to take him, but, I also stated I was fine with Wentz. I then stated I knew Goff was not a possibility to get because I knew he was going #1, that’s when I went all in for Wentz. Check the archive..it states just that. Next! …
For the record, I still believe Goff will turn into a stud QB. He needs more time and seasoning. …Next!

E0S, here is what I stated in regards to both Goff and Wentz in April. I’ve been on board with Wentz as well..please don’t try and act as if I all of a sudden jumped on the Wentz wagon since he played well yesterday. Nice try though.

pman, Zeitner also stated that he knows that the Eagles want to move up to get Wentz..it’s all about the cost though. Bradford and Daniels was signed before the Eagles got up to 8 so the thought of moving up far enough was not in play.
It appears that they are more enamored with Wentz than Goff who I think is more polished, pro ready and would be a good WCO fit. Don’t get me wrong, I like Wentz too and would be happy with either one of them as the future face of the franchise.

mhenski, don’t be so quick to judge, we all know it takes time for most QB’s to settle in. Some QB’s come in and light it up immediately, then they fall back to earth…RG3. Nick Foles.

Goff will prove you and the doubters wrong…give him time to develop and adjust. He’s like Novacane…give him time, he’ll work.

lol. let me rephrase my full opinion.

im ecstatic the eagles didnt end up with him and got wentz. i wanted no parts of goff from the moment we traded and was hopeful it was wentz. im happy about wentz, love everything about him, had a lot of concerns then and now about goff but now that hes not an eagle i dont really care. id pull a paulman and say good luck to him but thats weird so i wont. if he pans out good for the rams if he dont sucks for the rams. so long as the eagles cut his ass up when we play i dont care

After researching Wentz more I also stated that Wentz was better suited for Philly as his physicality would better fit the NFC East and his stronger arm would be better for the outside cold windy weather. None of it matters now..Wentz is an Eagle.

It doesn’t matter. Carson Wentz is a rookie QB from a 1AA school who played 24 snaps in the preseason and had not played in a full game since January.

The fact is Wentz was blitzed 12 times, he completed 10 of those passes beating the blitz from the pocket. Don’t diminish the Browns, the blitzes were getting there, Wentz just beat it with his brain and arm from the pocket.

You did not put qualifying statements about when Wentz would run and against whom. You stated Wentz had to run to be successful…period.

He proved that he could read Ray Horton’s defense, audible, make the defense jump by his cadence and beat them with his arm…not his feet.

No excuses! Wentz threw 37 times and was credited with 2 runs…hardly a running QB. He can do it, but he certainly does not have to, and apparently chooses not to.
