Outlining Offensive Line Changes For The Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles - Friday Mini-CampIn 2013 they were a dominant force, and were also healthy for the entire season.   2014 we witnessed what any NFL team fears, being down multiple starters with our offensive line. Three players were lost for several games due to injuries, (Herremans, Kelce, Mathis) while Lane Johnson had to sit out the first four games for violating the league substance policy.

The starting five are all under contract for the upcoming season, with three of those players on the wrong side of 30.  Jason Kelce and Johnson are young; they are the building blocks for years to come, but what about the rest.

-Peters racked up a lot of penalties down the stretch, but the guy is still a dominating player and graded out as either the top tackle or near the top in his position group.  A hefty cap hit, but typical with a Pro Bowl left tackle. I think the guy has a minimum of two more years left.

– Mathis, the rumors swirled last offseason that he was on his way out the door, and in the end he showed up to camp and played well down the stretch after returning from injury.   He is 33; his contract is up after the 2016 season.   I don’t anticipate him being resigned.

– Herremans has been with the Eagles for a decade, has started at guard, tackle, played through injuries and has really produced well for a 5th rounder out of a small school.  Sometimes you have to part with those savvy veterans, change can be good, and I feel the Eagles should look to improve as Herremans has steadily declined the last two seasons.

Could Herremans be traded along with a draft pick to possibly improve a position of need on the defensive side of the football?  His contract has two years remaining, the cap hit is respectable for a player who is both versatile and above average at his skill, maybe give Andy Reid a call and work something out.

Without drafting a single offensive lineman last season, the Eagles are sure to address this area in 2015.  How early should the Eagles commit to the offensive line with so many other needs on this football team?

Is this a similar situation as the draft last year with Marcus Smith?  Thinking about the future is good logic, but no starting spots are ‘currently” open, so why not fill a position of “immediate need” first.

Lane Johnson was drafted in the first round.   Herremans (5th) Kelce (6th), Peters went undrafted and was signed as a tight-end by the Bills, Mathis was a 3rd round pick by the Panthers.  I really think offensive line coordinator Jeff Stoutland can “mold” potential replacements at the guard and tackle position with prospects taken in the later rounds.  The Eagles have guys like Tobin and Gardner, the coaching staff likes both of these players so hopefully one can emerge and take over at the right guard position.

Free Agency/Draft

Unless the Eagles are going to cut or trade one of their starters, free agency and the draft would only be for “depth purposes.”  If a Herremans were to be moved, I’d look to insert a free agent veteran as his replacement.

Free Agency– I’d grab a center as I’m not too big on Molk.  Would also like a “big” guard whose player card says he weighs 325 pounds, but we know that is certainly being kind.

Draft- I’d draft a guy in the top 4 rounds, I’d lean more towards offensive tackle.

This is why draft picks are important. We need to draft Quality players to add depth and allow for a winning culture to form. Next man up only works if the next guy has talent.

If chip is suggesting to Lurie that he trade up to 1 to get one player then Jeff must fire chip. I think kelly is a good coach but Jerrah and the cowgirls have shown how good a team bases on a killer oline can be. This team needs to be able to pick up Short yardage 90+ % of the time and they can’t. That is the diference between playoffs and no playoffs.

Fix the D. Get a WR and solidify OLINE w big strong players. Championship

Eagles WRs coach Bob Bicknell reportedly isn’t interest in the 49ers’ offensive-coordinator job.
Yikes. The 49ers are having a tough time luring someone in to call the plays for Colin Kaepernick and Co. Alabama OC Lane Kiffin chose to remain in Tuscaloosa, Colts special assistant Rob Chudzinski accepted a promotion in Indianapolis, and ex-OC Greg Roman joined Rex Ryan in Buffalo. It’s unclear where the 49ers will go from here. QBs coach Geep Chryst is a candidate for a promotion.

It is brutal…
Probably Signing Sanchez may be the best alternative for at least he knows the System..
Read today that new Bills OC Greg Roman is excited and confident about
working with EJ Manuel so it doesn’t appear that he’ll be going anywhere..
Kirk Cousins may move on from Washington as they appear to be looking for RG3 to regain his Starters Job or it may end up being Colt McCoy in an open QB Competition
Jake Locker is a real wildcard as he’s been inconsistent and injured during his entire 4 Years with the Titans… He has some mobility, but he does have a big NFL Arm and could be a surprise QB if given the right situation with good Coaching & Playmakers around him to help keep his mechanics sound and could end up being a decent QB…
Ponder is a turd with probably has the weakest arm in the entire NFL
Look around the League and there are not many Quality Back-up QB’s who are going to win many Games for any Teams if called upon..
At least Sanchez, you kind of know what you have..
f Sam Bradford gets released by the Rams for Salary Cap relief, he could
generate some interest, but with his 2nd Knee Surgery, how mobile is he ever going to be ? Has a decent arm with zip and accuracy in the short to intermediate range but not what I call a big arm and may be a Player that has had such bad luck with injuries that he’s become gun-shy

Maybe Barkley is finally ready to compete for the #2 spot.

Matt Barkley lit-up the PAC-12 when he was there. In four years he had a 64.1% completion percentage – 12327 yards – 116 TDs – 48 INTs – 148.7 QB Rating… Yet he could not get on the field for the Eagles…

Mark Sanchez, the same thing – he was a big time star coming out of the PAC-12… Kinda failed in the NFL though…

It gives you reason to doubt Kelly’s judgemant if he wants to give-up multiple first round picks to get the most recent guy to lit-up the PAC-12…

That’s not what Maxwell said today. I heard he said he wants to explore and see whats out there for him.

Of course hed want to stay in Seattle, I wouldn’t leave that team either lol

But he sees dollar signs, and its well deserved. Hes had a good 2 years in a row. He still has to work on some things but hes a very good player that has the potential to be great if he stays focused and works on his game

A 6th round pick… Hes a 6th round pick… Smh…

The Hawks are unbelievable. Great front office, great coaches, great players…

That’s the order and the way its supposed to be…

Why they’re on their way to winning their 2nd SB in a row…

Missed opportunity last year. OG/OTs Xavier Sua’a-Filo and (perhaps better) Joel Bitonio sitting on the board when the Eagles selected at 26.

Could have perhaps traded down 1 more time and still got them.,,,instead Smith……

I wanted the Eagles to draft OL 1st round last year and stated so many times (to a chorus of laughs and put downs by many as usual) because I knew there was age/injury trouble ahead. I knew O line was a potentially bigger issue than Dline. (correct)

In addition to that, Oline (and most O players) take longer to get up to speed than D players do. Draft an Olineman this year and I don;t expect serious contribution till the following season.

Again…loved the Johnson and Ertz picks year 1. Liked Matthews and Huff year 2 – I can see where the vision is….just don;t know why Kelly didn;t continue that and go Oline again with the 1st pick last year.

Build those up along with the young QB, then when that’s ready, attack the D.

Now they have to attack the D with big holes appearing on the oline……whoops.

Oh well…..

I had Sua as the best overall OL in the draft last year and wanted the Eagles to draft him…however his rookie year was average at best and his practice habits and heart were questioned. He only started because of injury and sat most of the season. He was supposed to step right in at guard at start and he shit the bed.

We talked about this yesterday HAC. This made the most sense the entire time that’s why I didn’t get the freak out over why there was no GM yet.

I also think this is just another push to get Howie out the door…no way in the world a guy sees his underling take over his job and can stick around.

After Tom Gamble IMO I bet this guy had Chips ear on the side the entire time…which made Howie paranoid.

And we are off…… random thoughts…

1) A football guy is not the GM- its been a long time since we have had that.

2) “Great cap guy”… those words from Chip about Howie are priceless. And now… thats all Howie needs to worry about. I will be the first to admit I have been rough on Howie from the start BUT…. I believe we are lucky to have him working our cap (known as one of the best) and would love for the Eagles to find a way to keep him.

3) Isnt it nice to know…. without a doubt, who is picking the players now? This is huge for me.

Stevo, point number 3 is the most important, I said that as soon as the changes were made, we now know who to point the finger at. This system of letting the coach pick his guy to help run the team has only been done by two other teams and their both playing this week in the SB, let’s hope that trend keeps going with us.

Tidbit from Adam Caplan on the new hire….

While just 30 years old, Marynowitz has worked with Alabama head coach Nick Saban (as director of player personnel), Bill Parcells (as a scouting assistant with the Miami Dolphins), and most recently Eagles head coach Chip Kelly during his scouting career. You won’t find a young executive whom people talk more highly of than Marynowitz. And those who have worked with him say his evaluation and organizational skills are what really stand out about him. He’ll be a general manager someday — it’s just a matter of when, not if.”

I was told/read over and over that Eagles’ workplace is “toxic”. That no one good would ever work in the Eagles’ dysfunctional management structure.

Joe Banner was badmouthing Eagles to every team in the league in order to ensure no talented officials would come to/stay with the Birds.

Clearly Marynowitz is a terrible, last gasp, only here because everyone else turned the Birds down choice.

There was certainly GM positions open. Why did two more prospective candidates, one from the Packers and one from the Ravens decline interviews? Just because I guess. I mean you are certainly posting as if you are in the loop. And clearly, when someone says no thank you to an interview, that is turning them down. The position does not have to be offered in order for that to happen. ( You are playing with semantics…”withdrew interests”….perhaps, but you are speculating as to why based on personal feelings…not facts) But hey, everything is green and rosy with our multiple championship SB trophies. GMs are overrated.Scouts are who do all the work. Just like in any workplace the boss gets all the accolades for doing something right while the worker bees, who actually did the grunt work, get no praise. I wonder how many times a Richard Sherman is found and the GM gets the credit while the scout who actually recommended him and promoted him gets no credit. lol. Maybe Im wrong but I would like to talk to a lot of scouts and ask them who really should get the credit for finding players. Strong scouts have to be just as vital to GMs as GMs themselves I would think. Scouts cover college regions and give their recommendations to their boss.

Chip has been angling for this for a minute. It was an inside job from the outset and more than likely Gamble was the guy. We still wont know but either he made a power move prematurely or Howie did(hard to judge because Lurie I would think had to sign off on the firing). Whatever it was bad judgement and Howie fell into the power play trap.

Chip has someone in lock step with him, regarded as young and bright and Howie is out of the picture.

Remember they are $20 Million under the Cap, but Resigning Maclin,
maybe extending a Foles,F Cox or Kendricks uses up that $20 in a Hurry
In Fact, Maclin’s Deal will take approx $15 of the $20 between his Salary and Signing Bonus so unless the Eagles Part Ways with the Veterans, I listed above, which would free-up some $28.5 Million in Cap Space even with the Dead $$$ associated with some of the Players Deals, then the Eagles will not be doing much I am afraid…
The Decision that Kelly Makes on COle,Herremans,Ryans,WIlliams,Casey tells me whether he’s in this for the long-haul, if he plans on bringing these Players back at their Current Salaries, this Team and Organization are going nowhere.. It’s time for Kelly to Cut the Chord with Aging AR Players who have been solid players but are earning too much for their production and there is no used in having 30+ Years old Rotational Players who are on the downside of their Career… Now is the Time to get Younger, Bigger and More Athletic…

He’s also shown he’s capable of foolish spending. See Casey and Cooper just throwing money away.

They don’t steal one dime from me and Jeffrey Lurie can afford it… Means nothing whatsoever…
Happy go lucky… Maybe…. I’m a passionate fan that learned a whole ago bitching, moaning, criticizing and whining about seemingly every move…

You’re to hung up on telling people what they are hung up on! HAC, you appear to be happy go lucky with whatever the Eagles do, some of us question their decisions. Some fans are blase’, some are critical. What we do know is that none of the moves Jeff has made in 20 years has led us to a Lombardi trophy, that is where the criticisms and analysis has it’s roots!

I don t care about releasing Jackson. He made the move, people on here went ballistic… Not me, if he is he guy working 24/7, in all the meetings, practices, 100% involved and he thinks they are better off without him… Go for it

Oh….ok….just ignore the biggest cut he’s made….then ask, “who has he cut?” Com’on man.

The cutting of Herreman’s would have been easier had that demonstrated some forsight and drafted Oline with their first pick last year like they should have.

I’m worried they’re going to get into a “scrambling” situation this draft, looking for players in too many positions.

I loved the first draft, and was hoping they’d continue the theme last year, (heavy oline and O players) but they were all over the map.

I still think Herremans is gone. Casey has to be gone because he does less than nothing for his $$ (at least Cooper is on the field). Williams is gone.

Ryans….I think he has to stay – one mroe year.

Cole is interesting if only because of the Graham situation……With Smith being a huge question mark (I’m being generous) and Graham probably gone, cutting Coles leaves a pretty big hole at DE/OLB….they would have no one on that right side.

No one even knows if DeMeco yans can even play at a High Level coming off that Achilles until May or June and that’s too much to risk by simply waiting and counting on him.. Cut him and his $6.75 Million Salary, then go sign a Free-Agent for 1/3 the $$$$ (Spikes, Skuda or a Pat Willis when he gets Cut from the 49ers next month)
Then Draft a Replacement at ILB this Draft

BTW – all you guys who pay any attention to the media only have to look at Tiger Wood’s coverage the past several years. I mean the guy has been finished….done….for at least 2 years (again, I’m being generous) and yet they still lap.

Dude shot an 82 last week….82! and the recent headlines:

Phil Mickelson — Struggling Tiger will ‘have last laugh’
Tiger’s wide view: Getting ready for Augusta
Will Tiger Woods’ Mastery of Torrey Pines Be the Start of a Career Resurgence?

LOL

“Resurgence??

He’s 2 over threw 3 holes.

He’s done. One of the worst golfers on the tour.

Yet no one has the balls to say it.

They hang and hang and hang on the old stories…with Favre, with Manning, with Vick, with Woods….no one ever admits when its done. Instead they contuinue with excuse making platitudes…….sad really.

Yeah Tiger is inside his own head now… He has zero confidence in his new swing, and he has the chipping yeps…

He is getting to the age where he can’t make major swing changes. But he has no choice with the injuries he has suffered.

I never thought I would see him chipping with a 5 iron from 20 yards off the green…. He was scared to chip with a lofted club…. wow.

Coach Kelly needs to Cut Cole,Herremans,Ryans,C Williams,J Casey
and use that $28.5 Million in Cap Savings along with the $20 They are under to being with and then use this $$$ to Rebuild the SecondaryCB’s & Safety, Sign an OLB, OL & WR, then use the Draft to Add Young PLayers to Secondary,LB,OL & WR Positions..

If he doesn’t Cut these 5 Payers I listed and Save $28.5 Million then he’s an idiot and won’t be able to rebuild this Roster and upgrade the Secondary and therefore have an Average Team at best come 2015 which is what I am expecting him to do….. I hope he proves me wrong….

***NFL News****

Titans release the Unproductive OT Michael Oher who is not of NFL Quality Starter.. A Great Story/Movie of his Life in “Then BLindside” but he’s just not technically sound or physical enough to play at the NFL Level as a Starter..

I expect some other Veterans to be released for Salary Cap Relief and the fact they are getting on in years…

WR- Mike Wallace – Dolphins
RB – Reggie Bush – Lions
ILB – Jon Beason – NY Giants
ILB – Patrick Willis – 49ers
WR – Wes Wellker – Broncos
OT – Doug Free – Cowboys
OL – Todd Herremans – Eagles
ILB – Trent Cole – Eagles
CB – Cary WIlliams – Eagles
CB – Brandon Carr – Cowboys
WR – Tayvon Austin – Rams
