What Was It That Happened To Set Andy Reid Off?

During the warm up session before each NFL game, the punt returners catch quite a few punts to get an idea of what it’s going to be like to catch the ball in that particular stadium on that particular day.

They get the chance to see how the wind is affecting the ball.  They’re able to see if the sun is affecting their vision when the ball is at its highest point in the sky and as it falls.

Yesterday, Eagles top punt returner DeSean Jackson told one of the coaches that it was too cold in Chicago to catch punts before the game.  He ran some routes and caught some passes but went back in the locker room without catching any punts.

As you would expect, this didn’t sit well with Andy Reid when he learned about it.

I know you’ve heard about how Reid went off after the game by now.  I was told that Reid was angered to the point that he was beet-red and trembling.  I was told that he went on a tirade after the locker room doors were closed and said something like, “if you’re going to act like bitches, then I will treat you like bitches”.  That doesn’t sound like a happy Andy Reid.

Jackson was mentioned during Reid’s tirade because the wide receiver wasn’t looking at the big man when he was talking. On top of that, Reid heard about Jackson cutting corners before the game.  Reid doesn’t believe in cutting corners.  He is a stickler for detailed preparation.

I can understand Reid being angry because anybody who has been around the game for a long time knows that this young team was being patted on the back too much.  They were being told that they were great by too many people.  The superlatives and adulation was coming from everywhere and it was coming constantly.

As a kid, my parents would tell us in that good old country talk that we were “getting too big for our britches”.  That Eagles team which showed up in Chicago on Sunday was starting to “smell themselves” as my grandfather used to say.

They were getting “big-headed” and starting to cut corners.  Reid knows that cutting corners is a sign of a team that’s “getting too big for their britches”.

The Bears were ready to play.  They were being told that they were impostors and not legitimate.  The national television game got personal for the Bears during the week, while the Eagles looked at the Bears as just another victim in their way.

You could tell by the battle on the lines, which requires a lot of “want to” and effort, that Chicago had to have this game while the Eagles wanted this game.

NFL football is a week to week test.  If you do well one week, you have a day or two to celebrate then you have to forget it.  If you don’t forget it, you can almost guarantee that you won’t play as well the next week.

Preparation is the hardest part of the NFL.  It can get boring, but it must be done.  The games are the fun, but the preparation is the work.

I completely understand Reid going off, but I also understand Jackson’s attitude.  I commend him from not having one of those total blow up interviews.  I know that DeSean Jackson is pissed and I think he behavior was a message to Reid that he’s tired of being underpaid.

I don’t think it was a good thing for him to start cutting corners, by not catching punts before the game but I understand.

I’m sure that Jackson has a difficult time of keeping a good attitude nowadays.  Every time he practices or plays a game, he knows there are players on the field who have achieved absolutely nothing but are being paid much more than he’s making.

He knows that all of the guys who have accomplished as much as he has in the league, are making as much as five, six, seven or eight times as much as he’s making.  I’m sure that he’s taken some ribbing from the guys for being so drastically underpaid.

During that time he was out because of the second concussion he has suffered in the last two years, Jackson couldn’t help but realize that he’s one play from being unable to play again.  I’m sure he thought about how little security he has at this point in his career.

I’m sure , Jackson remembers all of the guys who were on the team when he was drafted a few years ago, that are no longer in the league.  He weighs about 165 pounds and knows that an injury might prevent him from ever getting a big pay day.

I’m sure he and Michael Vick have talked about it.  Vick is making $5 million dollars this year, but he’s in a unique situation where his behavior off the field has him in a position where he’s underpaid.  Vick has nobody to blame for his situation other than himself.

On the other hand, Jackson has done all the right things and kept his mouth shut, but he’s still not making any where near the kind of money he should be making. They want him to return punts, run reverses and be one of the league’s best receivers, yet they are in no rush to pay him fairly.

So far the Eagles have been unable willing to at least make a good-will gesture, by giving him a bonus like the ones they gave Donovan McNabb a couple of years ago and the one they gave Kevin Kolb this past off season.

Didn’t D-Jax swoon the last 2 seasons as the weather got colder…
Eagles now have their top 2 playmakers in Vick and D-Jax who don’t have a history of playing that well once December rolls around when they have to play outdoors…
Plus the the fact that they pass 60%-65% of the time does not bode well for the Eagles down the stretch…
I am happy to hear the Coach AR got on him or anyone else whose heads can’t fit inside their helmets anymore…

*****Trade Alert******

After the Season, Eagles Trade WR D Jackson to the Oakland Raiders for their 2nd Rd Draft Pick,
D-Jax longs to play back home in Northern California where he feels he will have more marketability and be the star/face of the Raider Franchise instead of sharing the limelight in Philadlelphia with Vick,Maclin,McCoy,etc, etc
Raiders may even throw in WR/Return man Jacoby Ford in the Deal per my Sources

G, regardless of what he makes, he has to play hard and prepare 100% ALL THE TIME. Not doing this is the fastest way to get less money than you want or deserve. There are no excuses. We can try to rationalize it about money and sure that is a factor BUT A PROFESSIONAL KNOWS HE HAS TO GO 100% ALL THE TIME. No excuses. At all.

Tired of hearing about his contract situation, he is under contract period play it out and get your new deal. If you did not like it at the time then hold-out like a little bitch, which he is now acting like.

Ok here we go again with Paulman just making up stuff. Let’s see…

“Eagles now have their top 2 playmakers in Vick and D-Jax who don’t have a history of playing that well once December rolls around when they have to play outdoors”

Let’s take a look at DJack last year in December outdoor games:

12/13/09 @ NY – 6 receptions for 178 yards, 1 TD and 1 punt return for a TD,
12/20/09 home against 49ers – 6 receptios 140 yards, 1 TD

That’s 2 out of 4 games in December in the cold. The other December games were against ATL in the dome where he didn’t play. And got shut down against Denver. Not sure if you can label that as “a history of not playing well outdoors in December”. And in 2008 he was a rookie where his biggest impact was on special teams as Westbrook was the primary focus in the running and pass game. Just stop throwing silly stuff out there. He’s in the middle of his 3rd season and he has a history of playing bad in december? Give me a friggin break.

And for Vick, not sure it’s wise to use the old Vick as a bar for this Vick. We know how that turned out for most of us. I can’t remember but did he play well against Green bay when they knocked them out the playoffs at Lambeau? But that doesn’t matter thought right because it was years ago?

LMAO, if coach really said “you want to act like bitches I’m gonna treat you like bitches” LMAO….he gets major points from me! LMAO…I like it! I was worried about how the Eagles acted after victories, to much excitement it seemed..they needed to be checked! REALTALK! celebrating after the Giants game, which was a big victory, but the Bears game should have been an even bigger game..but that is just youth on the team…DJAX will respond…This is ONE incident, (really not even an incident) DJAX is young and the Eagles locker room is strong enough to deal with what was said…

This is a very young team. They’re learning some valuable lessons.

They ran their mouths, bad mouthing McNabb and promoting Kolb, and they learned that practicing and playing a “couple of games” is quite different than playing an entire season.

As of late, they’ve been reading their own press clippings, and they’re learning that you’re never as good as you think, nor as bad as you think. They must continually strive to improve.

My problems with Reid are well documented, but I’ve always praised him as a motivator. Great job!

These guys should be ready on Thursday.

I definately think Vick was not happy with all the D Jax alligator arming the passes. He definately told Andy, and that made Andy more pissed! One play after a catch Jackso could have made, you could see Andy asking Vick on the sideline..and you can see Vick motion with his hands how Desean was supposed to break off the route at the top but he cut it off, and Andy nodded his head. It wasent the touchdown but like a post route. Vick has to be frustrated because he is just as a risky situation as Jackson, but he is letting it all hang out, and Jackson is playing like he doesnt want to get hurt. DOG, hit the weight room, lift, DO HGH…WHO CARES!..but 165 in the NFL

Steve Smith (carolina) is what he need his frame to be like in order to withstand the pounding. If he cant attain that, fine…but thats what he needs to shoot for. I keep waiting for somebody to get sick of him blowing past and finally just Brock Lesnar “F5” him take the penalty, hefty fine, and be done with it!

RealTalk777
RealTalk777
November 29, 2010 3:23 pm

As far as DJAX not taking contact that is old news! With his frame how many big hits would you want him to take? Noone is making excuses for DJAX, fact of the matter is, he is a big part of what the Eagles do, his presence on the field in itself is something that worries the defense…Also these two articles are pretty much about yesterday’s game, noone was saying a word until the loss…(granted people have gotten a little upset with DJAX going to the ground and not trying to pick up a yard or two, I’m one of them, but at the same time, I’d rather have him healthy)

however, if DJAX took it down a little bit because of his contract situation, then I’m a little upset with him myself…I give him the benefit of the doubt on this one and I’m confident he’ll bounce back!

Toughness has been brought up since he came into the league.. He is 165lb receiver, why question his toughness…do you expect him to absorb the types of hits that 215lb wide receivers take?…he is a totally different animal. Different expectations for different players…

Erock
Erock
November 29, 2010 3:51 pm

As much as i agree Desean showed some alligator arms on that play i think you have too tame some of this criticism. The guy is the reason we’re explosive. One trick pony….reverses…curl routes ..deep seams…digs…outs…deep ins…flys..posts…flags. He adds allot to the offense that i could care less he doesnt wanna go over the middle. Maclin and the rest of the dudes can do that. Not shag’n some punts…i could see Big Red not feelin that. Attention to detail equals wins.Should be noted he almost took one houes last night.

Desean takes the game seriously. He had a good father who taught him how too be a good man. jerry Rice consouls the dude. And Rice was somewhat of a diva too. But come on the dude makes peanuts….and look what he does. Not saying its an excuse but dont tell me any of you guys would feel the way he does if you were being paid 10 times less then some a$$hole in your office that f’d up the lunch order everday and never made enough copies.

Time for Texans.

Man D-Jax is going nowhere. He and Maclin just need to grow up a little. Both of those guys are young and they can be hot headed. It’s funny how quick they want to open their mouths up when things are great or possibly going there way (i.e. talking about McNabb, and Kolb being one of the young guns) yada, yada, yada… Now you get a little pressure applied to you and you want to get angry and not talk to anyone. I say man up, young buck… You got the Cali Swag… In all seriousness, they will be fine, they just need to learn some hard lessons. And if the weather has an effect, then you are defnitely on the wrong coast.

Now for the toughness, at 165lbs, he cannot take those hits. He would never last. I do believe he’s a little gun shy, but I blame that on concussions, and a little on the contract stuff. D Jax is going to be fine. Watch him shine Thursday night, Big Red will make sure of that. Andy knows exactly what he is doing.

November 29, 2010 4:02 pm

Erock, obviously Andy doesn’t fully agree. I wouldn’t say he doesn’t take the game seriously but he may have not been as serious at times when he should have. From what I’ve been reading, Andy was more upset for him not taking pregame warmups and drills serious and have a “diva-like” attitude before, during and after the game. And then not really (or seemingly) paying attention to Andy while he’s talking to the team. So if that’s really what Andy blew him up for, them I say it was well warranted. There’s no question about the affect his presence has on a game because of his speed. No one is questioning that but that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to let him act or do what he wants because he’s Desean Jackson. He’s a younger player in this league who in the grand scheme of things still has a lot to do. So for that, I say all the criticism is warranted and it’s about time. Too long have some of the young players been acting like they are the best thing that’s happened to the game and I for one don’t mind the tough love. And we must think that Andy must have really thought it was a problem for him to do it because he never does that. I’d rather Andy do what he thinks is best than to act like nothing matters like Wade Phillips.
