Transcript Of Marty Mornhinweg Presser

Eagles defensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg spoke after the early morning practice.  Marty used to say more until Andy jumped his butt for revealing too much.  Now he's very guarded.

Opening Remarks:

“Three days, five practices- excellent job by the rookies and selected vets. They learned an awful lot, and got a three day, five practice head-start both physically and mentally, and that’s a good thing.”

On what the young players can learn from being around the veterans:

“Well, that is one way young players learn. You’ve got your playbook, on the field reps, film, board work, walk-throughs, and one of the better ways is to watch the veterans and see how an experienced man, player, may run a route, may set a wide end- all those types of things. So, that’s a good point.”

On the progress he’s seen in WR/KR Jeremy Bloom so far:

“Well, he has progressed. If you remember, he had not played football for a long time, and then he went through an injury situation. So, it appears up-to-date, that he’s feeling pretty comfortable with our offense. He’s continuing to learn; he’s continuing to get better every day. He may very well earn himself some reps.”

On whether Bloom is capable of earning playing time as a wide receiver:

“Well, that’s what we’re finding out right now. He’s done a good job up-to-date. We certainly have a long way to go, but he’s done a good job.”

On his observations of RB Tony Hunt so far:

“He’s had an excellent three days here. He’s sharp, smart, a hard worker, and he has some physical ability. He’s doing everything he can right now to earn some playing time, and we’ll see how that continues to progress. He’s getting better every day.”

On whether the young players have advanced with the offensive playbook

“No, there are some new things. You know how I like to do it, is get a new player between all the minicamps, and then by the time we’re done with training camp, much of [it is] what we’ll run in the first three games, or at least early in the season.”

On what percent of the offense the young players comprehend:

“It’s still pretty low. The situational things come into play much more in training camp, and this is a situational game we play nowadays. The situational aspects of the game become important as we work through training camp.”

On whether it will be difficult for WR Bill Sampy to make an impression once the veterans arrive:

“He’s already made an impression. I think he’s got a chance to compete to make this ball club- there’s no question about that. He’s certainly talented in a handful of different ways, and we’ll see how he continues to progress. There’s great competition there, especially at the receiver spot.”

On what the timetable is for QB Donovan McNabb to return to his healthy self:

“We go day by day. It’s as simple as that. He sure has looked sharp, and he’s done an excellent job in the rehabilitation it appears. Our medical staff and training staff have done a super job of that, so we’ll take it day by day.”

On how impressed he is with the development of Bloom as a wide receiver:

“First, where many players make the football team is with their special teams play, so that certainly could be a possibility. I will say he’s done an excellent job at the receiver spot in minicamps and these first three days here. He’s progressed at a real high pace. He hadn’t played football for a long time coming in, then he went through the injury problem, and he’s done a nice job so far.”

On whether he expects the same amount of play-calling duties as last season:

“I think so, yeah. But none of that matters. We’re about winning the next game- whatever it takes to win the next game. So, it doesn’t matter who’s doing what, who’s getting the ball, none of that matters. All we’re focused on is winning the next game.”

On how important QB Kelly Holcomb’s experience is for the young players:

“Kelly Holcomb is a good football player and he’s shown that- very smooth, extremely accurate, very good decision-maker, and then he’s got experience on top of that. With much of his experience, he’s done very well. So, we like to have him because of his talent and experience, and then he adds a few more things in the locker room with his experience and personality.”

On whether it’s difficult for the wide receivers to adjust to the arm strength of each quarterback:

“They’re job is to catch the football. It doesn’t matter how it comes in, they catch the football. Donovan’s got a very strong arm; [QB] Kevin’s [Kolb]got a pretty strong arm; [QB] A.J.’s [Feeley] arm is pretty strong, too. So, they catch the football. There’s not much adjustment. Those guys catch the ball year round.”

On his impression of tight ends Lee Vickers, Brent Celek, and Kyle Hunt:

“Yeah, there’s quite a competition there at the tight end spot, and they all have a chance to succeed in this league, I think. All of them have different strengths, so it will be interesting as camp progresses.”

On how RB Tony Hunt has picked up the offense so far:

“He’s pretty sharp and he has excellent work habits. He’s progressing well, and it looks like he’s earning some playing time here in the preseason. We’ll see as training camp goes on- then you earn your playing time- and so we’ll see how that progresses.”

On what Hunt’s role in this offense will be:

“There’s a host of different ways that Tony could help us. The first way would be [on] special teams. The second way would be some type of situational player. Another way would be as a change of pace type player, and so forth. So, there’s a bunch of different ways Tony could help us. He’s got to earn it. We’ve got some pretty good backs here, so we’ll see.”

On how Hunt has been doing catching the ball out of the backfield:

“Early in minicamps he was very good. He showed he had excellent hands. We’ve put quite a few more things in [the offense now], and he’s had a few drops here as of late, but I would expect him to be a consistent ball catcher.”
