My Thoughts From Eagles/Redskins

So, 0-2, huh? After what I saw last night I will go back to my theory that makes all these terrible games feel much better: In the end, you either win the Super Bowl or you are like 31 other teams.  It’s really as simple as that.

Regardless of whether the Birds right the ship (and chances are they will improve pretty significantly), they aren’t good enough to win it all this year.  I don’t care what adjustments are made, it’s not happening.  So I’ll just try to enjoy watching the games and whatever happens happens.  We can look and pick out the different problems all day long, but in the end, I’ll say what I’ve been saying about the Phillies all year:  “They just aren’t good enough.”   The game against the Patriots this season will illustrate that point just beautifully.

So let’s take a look at the highs and lows of Week 2:

What I liked:

-Westbrook is dynamite.  He doesn’t get the respect he deserves in the national media.  For all the hype draped on Reggie Bush, he’s not Westbrook.  B West runs much smarter.

-The run defense has been a nice surprise.  I thought for sure this team would get destroyed on the ground.  Make no mistake, the duo of Portis and Betts is nasty and the Eagles D stood up pretty well.

-Am I allowed to give credit to Akers and the FG team?  In a game with no TD’s for the Eagles, I think I have to.  Too bad it didn’t amount to anything.

-I like Jason Avant, but who doesn’t?  I wish he was fast.  He gets open and catches everything thrown his way.  Boy….if he was just fast.

…and, not so much:

-I have to tell you, I really struggled to come up with things that I liked.  I’m exhausted now.

-The WR’s are dreadful. Kevin Curtis doesn’t stretch the field like Stallworth.  Since they aren’t using him in New England, maybe the Eagles can get him back (kidding)?  Reggie Brown might as well not even be out there.  Oh, and he dropped another McNabb pass last night.  He just has to make more plays.  I know Donovan sends some hot ones in there, but you are an NFL receiver, you have to make some catches at some point.  I remember hearing stories of Troy Aikman ripping the webbing in Alvin Harper’s hand.  I’ve heard of QB’s leaving that little cross from the stitching of the ball on receivers’ chests.  Quarterbacks that throw lasers aren’t new to the NFL. And they aren’t going anywhere, so get used to it, Reggie.

-Why is Jason Avant on the bench for some crucial third downs?!  He is the only WR that can play football on this team, and he’s on the bench for some third downs?  Brilliant.  In a game where your WR’s can’t get open, you leave the one guy who is made for third downs on the bench.  Ok, got it.

-Where is the pressure from the front four?  The biggest weakness of Jason Campbell is his inexperience.  You take advantage of that by getting in his face and forcing bad tosses.  Jim Johnson can’t blitz every play, so the front four needs to do its job. They had a backup right tackle in there for crying out loud!

-Santana Moss taught Will James some lessons about how to cover.  That 10-12 yard sideline route was open all night.  Moss is an excellent receiver who brings more to the table than just speed, but James thinks of himself as a starting-caliber cornerback in this league.  Play like one.

-This defense doesn’t cover the tight end very well.  If Chris Cooley and backup Todd Yoder caught what they were supposed to, the Eagles would have been in much worse shape.  Their drops helped to cover up what I consider to be poor tight end coverage.  That should be fine, there aren’t any good TE’s in the NFC East.  I doubt that will rear its ugly head five more times this season during division games.

Did you notice?

-Rotoworld.com says that AJ Feeley was listed as the #3 QB and that Kevin Kolb was Donovan’s backup. Hmmmm…..not sure what that means. Did they report that wrong? Did I miss the explanation on that?

-Victor Abiamiri didn’t dress.  Can you start thinking about that one, Andy?  The front four isn’t getting a pass rush and at some point I’d like to see what the kid can do.

-Westbrook suffered a knee strain.  Wonderful. He’ll be fine I’m sure, but if you think this offense stinks now….
