Eagles add a punter

The Eagles have signed former Green Bay Packer and Washington Redskin Durant Brooks to a two-year contract today, according to the team’s website.

Brooks was a sixth-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins in 2008 after he won the Ray Guy Award at Georgia Tech the previous year.¬† He was supposed to be the Packers’ punter last year, but was derailed by a hip injury.

He’s expected to be some competition for restricted free agent Sav Rocca.¬† I say that’s a good idea.¬† Rocca isn’t terrible, but I don’t think he’s good enough.¬† I certainly don’t think he’s consistent enough.¬† With punters, I’d like to know what I’m going to get when he goes out there.¬† With Rocca, you really don’t.¬† He could boom one, or he could shank a 25-yarder and give the other team good field position.

Brooks appeared in six games with the Redskins in 2008 and had an average of 39.6.¬† I’d like to see him punt before I judge him on his numbers.¬† Punting numbers are beyond deceitful and it’s completely irresponsible to judge a guy based on some averages.¬† You never know what the situation was, what he was asked to do, who he was supposed to kick away from and so on.¬†¬† Punters are best judged on empirical data, not statistics.¬†¬†

So yeah….we’ll see.¬†
