The Importance Of The Draft Can’t Be Overemphasized

defensive end Pierre-Paul The importance of getting things right in the draft can’t be overemphasized.  Think about how the Eagles history may have changed had they drafted Reggie Wayne or Chad Johnson rather than Freddie Mitchell.

The Birds are preparing for another draft and I want to see them take chances looking for players who can be dominators on the team’s defensive line.

They’ve got to get better because the Dallas Cowboys have gone past them and they have to play catch up.  The Cowboys are better than the Birds upfront, so the Eagles need to catch up.

Maybe the guy to get is South Florida’s pass rushing defensive end Jason Piere-Paul.

They’ve got to get a dominating pass rusher coming from the left side.  You can’t have a defense that thrives in NFC Championship games and Super Bowls by relying on the blitz.

They’ve been wrong on Victor Abiamiri and Trevor Laws.  They mistakenly let Derrick Burgess leave and he would have been the answer at the left defensive end position.

I read an artilce on ESPN.com about a former Cowboys scout Walt Yaworsky, who fought with Jimmy Johnson and his assistant coaches to force them to draft Emmitt Smith in the first round.  It’s a great article and emphasizes the importance of getting the draft picks right.

Think about the importance of the choice which the Colts made in selecting Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf.  Manning may wind up going down as the greatest quarterback ever, while Leaf is somewhere selling insurance.
