Howard signs five-year extension

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com tweets that Philadelphia Phillies’ 1B Ryan Howard is about to sign a five-year extension. And literally seconds after I just posted that, I saw Howard officially signed the contract, so that’s a done deal.

Howard signed a five-year, $125 million contract with an optional sixth year that would push the deal to $138 million.

Wow.

Personally, I’m happy for Howard. He missed a lot of valuable time in the majors because Jim Thome was blocking him. Missed time leads to missed money, so it’s good to see him get his payday.

That said, that is an insane amount of money. If he starts to decline or gets hit by the injury bug in the coming years, that is going to be a tough check to cut.

The 30-year old has 16 RBI’s and three HR’s this season in 18 games. He’d be a lot more effective for the Phillies if he could pitch, but I might be asking for too much.

OK Phils, way to go. He must have known something was up because he has been making some great plays in the field these last few games! Does this mean that Werth will not be back??

This is a great signing. The phillies are showing that they want to keep this team together and compete for a championship for the next 5 years.

If only they had kept Lee and Traded Hammels

I believe Werth will be back. Now Ill do my Paulman thing.

Ibanez will be traded for 2 prospects from the Cubs.(Jack Meoff and Bend Over)
D Brown will be promoted to the bigs.
It will open the door for Werth to sign a contract

2011 Starting outfield D Brown, Victorino, Werth

Ibanez impossible to trade with his Contract
Werth is gone at the trade-deadline to the Red-Sox for Papplebon and pitching prospect
or to another American League team

Outfield for 2011 will be
(Ibanez, Victorino , Brown)
Outfield for 2012 season will be
(Mayberry Jr, Victorino, Brown)

Wonder if the Eagles could work him out at DE
(he’s probably too big for that though..)

Dude your crazy there is no way Werth is getting traded this year.

Do you watch the Phillies. Phillies need Werths RIGHT HANDED bat int he line up to break up the Leftys.

And Mayberry will never be a starter for the Phillies

If the Philles don’t straighten-out this Bullpen,
I don’t care who is playing outfield for the Phils, for they will not win a Word Series
with this bullpen. I stated this in the off-season, spring camp and now 3 weeks into the season.

Ok so what does the Bullpen have to do with Jayson Werth getting traded. Dude they need him to break up the leftys If you have Brown out there you will have 4 straight leftys in the lineup we will be killed in the late innings with left handed specialist coming out of the pen.

This is a long season come down LIdge isnt back yet and Romero just got back. And if they need to fill some holes in the Pen there will be guys out there in july to get.

Take a deep breath and remember the MLB season is 162 games not 16 they have time to fix the pen.

Great signing but this bullpen needs help ASAP. In the future, Aumont could be the answer, but as Paulman said, we’re not winning another World Series with this excuse for a bullpen. Romero is coming back so we’ll see how that plays in and Lidge is coming back soon-ish, but I think we need to trade for someone.

Great job Phillies! Ryan Howard is our Babe Ruth. Now, once again, WTF is wrong with Cole Hamels? Just awful..Awful.

Here’s how I see it,
Romero will never be the same now that he’s off whatever he was banned for last season for 50 games
(it’s a mental thing with him now
Lidge will be ok, not as bad as 2009 but not dominant as he was in 2008 (which is impossible to duplicate), he will probably be in the middle and bottom line, this bullpen is not good enough to win a
World Series or even get to the World Series in it’s present form…
I don’t want to sound like Debbie Downer, but I have been consistent since the off-season to address this Phillies Bullpen and it hasn’t happen and probably won’t…
