Westbrook Wants To “Think Over” Signing With The Rams

Yesterday, everything seemed to be moving right along in making Brian Westbrook a St. Louis Ram, until they started talking dollars and cents.

Westbrook wasn’t so sure he wanted to play for the Rams when he found out what they were willing to pay him.

“He wanted to go back [home] and think it over,” Rams G.M. Billy Devaney said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “We’re just taking it one step at a time right now.”

Westbrook took the trip to St.Louis and went through a very extensive medical examination.  You know they gave him the thorough exam because of the concussions he suffered a year ago, as well as the knee and ankle injuries and subsequent surgeries that took him off the field.

You can understand the Rams wanting to bring Westbrook to St. Louis.  The head coach Steve Spagnuolo and offensive coodinator, Pat Shurmur were Eagles assistant coaches when number 36 was possibly the most productive running back in the league.

He would serve as a back up to Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson and he would be a safety valve for rookie quarterback Sam Bradford.

The numbers Westbrook was offered hasn’t come out yet, but chances are they’ll¬† be leaked before too long.

Not sure what there is to think about. Either he wants to play or not. He should know by now that his choices are limited and because of that money offered is going to be low.

I thnk he wants to have an opportunity to play a little more than he would on the Rams
who have 1 of the best in S Jackson and probably wouldn;t get too many touches or opportunities
unless there was an injury… His best move would be to retire completely and to enjoy his family, life and his heatlh.. he has nothing to prove to anyone …
Teams that would be interested and could use his services could be a team like the
Packers,Browns,Steelers,Bengals,maybe even the Giants

@paulman i think its just the opposite. I think he sees a decent amount of touches if he plays for St. Louis. STL never had a quality backup to help sustain and preserve SJax’s career. With Westbrook they have a guy that is experienced and can catch out of the backfield just as good if not better than SJax. I just wonder if he still wants to play football.

No- I think he saw a league minimum offer and needs to weigh his health and legacy vs that money. I would bet he signs a retirement contract with the eagles by august.

Regal, I that’s a good point. I would also have to think though that if it was a winning team that offered the same money, he may be more inclined to take it. For instance, Minny of GB. But who knows.

1-15 a year ago. He should either find a good team where he might win it all or hang it up. He’s going to have the brain of an 80 year old man by the time he retires if he keeps getting hurt.

Scorp – I don’t disagree. If he was offered league min to play for a real contender I think he would take his chances at getting a ring. Getting beat up for Peanuts (in NFL terms) to play for the Rams and go 6-10 and maybe have negative long term health impact is not worth it. (Although since I will never see that kind of money I would do it).

Why would he want to play for the Rams he is on the downside of his career. He should want to play for a winner for a chance to get a ring. If he signs with the Rams its just to squeeze some more money out of a NFL team. It would make no sense for him to go to a loser unless hes looking for some more money.
