Safety Marlin Jackson Goes Down With A Ruptured Achilles Tendon

Eagles safety Marlin Jackson went down today with a ruptured achilles tendon.¬† I think he’s through for the season but the Eagles didn’t say that, I’m saying that.¬† He was trying to change direction on the artificial surface inside the Birds’ bubble.

In another injury left guard Todd Herremans injured his left foot and the Eagles say he’s down with a sore foot.¬† There were any other details given about the offensive lineman.

Jackson laid on the field for a while until trainers came and helped him up and assisted him in walking off, then they brought the cart for him.  Everybody thought it was a knee but it turned about to be a ruptured achilles tendon.

As he laid there on the turf, you knew that he was reliving the last two years of injuries that ended his season, now he suffers the achilles tendon.¬† So many times a player who is sidelined for an extended period of time, has something else go out on him because it’s weakened from the inactivity.

He didn’t look like he was all the way back to me before that or it might be that he doesn’t have confidence in his leg just yet.¬† He takes too many steps to change direction and that’s a sign that he doesn’t want to put all of his weight on his previously injured leg.

Rookie Nate Allen was inserted into the weak safety spot but he’s still learning what to do on all of the coverages so he seems indecisive and passive at this early stage.¬† It’s understandable, but when they get to training camp,¬† he must be able to turn it loose and play with his speed.

Quintin Demps made a nice play today by the sideline when he took a ball from a receiver on a pass thrown by Michael Vick.  Vick had escaped from the pocket and given his receiver a chance to come down with but Demps picked it off.

He did a nice contending for another ball Vick had thrown near the other sideline.

I would be very surprised if Marlin Jackson is ever able to return to the player he once was (2-3 years ago..) just don’t see it with 2 ACL ‘s in the last 2 years. He was a good player when healthy but to count on him now after recent injuries is wishful thinking at this point…

Don’t worry, he’ll be ready for the Super Bowl.

Why is Demps even on this team? Didn’t he say last year he would have played harder had he known the position wasn’t his? Seriously….who says that out loud?

I’m not surprised by Jackson with another serious injury. I’m just surprised it’s not one of his knees. Obviously, anyone could suffer that type of injury but this is the reason why people get pissed off at the Eagles when they sign an injury plagued player. Although it’s not one of his knees it still will give people another reason to complain about them bargain shopping in the offseason. And rightfully so.

And they can’t cut him now because of the injury. Now let’s put another rookie out there at safety and hope he plays well. Demps stinks. The only thing he does reasonably well is kick off returns but he doesn’t do that better than Hobbs. I don’t even know why he’s still here except for the fact that they drafted him and don’t want to look foolish by cutting him too early in his career. Demps could have used one more year with Dawk. Oh wait, nevermind.

“His contract wasn’t guaranteed for injury, so he’s likely to be released with an injury settlement.”

Demps stinks but could have used more time with Dawk? Yeah that doesn’t make sense. If he stinks he stinks. Dawk is a player not a coach. If Demps can’t learn from the coaches Dawk wouldn’t have made a difference. For him being on the team it comes down to depth. We obviously need depth so cutting him makes absolutely no sense.

Jackson just looks to be cursed. No one can say they saw this injury coming. 2 ACLs and now his Achilles. It looks like his career may be done. That is a lot to over come.

Don’t know if they consider getting Otogwe or not now. You have to think Allen is the future but if you’re not comfortable him starting from day 1 does it make sense to bring in Otogwe if he’s not in the long term plans or is he significantly younger than Mikell that you can see him and Nate lining up together in a few years? Don’t know but I never really figured Jackson to be starting over Allen once he was drafted but now depth at FS is more of a question.

Well gib some players actually are a little better off when they get a chance to sit behind a very good veteran for longer than one season and not thrown into the fire in the NFC championship game against of of the most prolific passing games of that season. It wouldn’t have hurt him to learn the game and position for a little more time. So yes he does stink, but maybe he’d stink a little less. I’m sure that’s a possibility. And yes cutting him does make sense. You don’t keep him just because you need depth. Go find someone else to play the position. Since he stinks, how much worse can you do? That would be better than to keep bringing the same bum back because at least you’re trying to find the right guy. Ummmmm how about draft better at the postion. Or take 3 or 4 safeties in the draft if your concerned about the starters AND the depth.

Of course no one could have seen the injury coming. They shouldn’t have signed him anyway coming off 2 separate torn ACLs, trying to learn this defense and playing possibly 2 different positions. When they first signed him, I had a gut feeling he was going to hurt himself again. I thought it would be knee problems. But this guy has had all his serious injuries all in practice. I mean knowing that as a coach, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable at all about his ability in a real games week in and out after both those injuries. That’s what happens when you bargain shop.

Draft Earl Thomas and this isn’t an issue. They got so many DEs now, who the hell knows who’s starting opposite Cole. It’s going to be DE by committee. Should have just got Thomas to at least solidify your safety position because there would have been no question at all. But now there’s even more questions in the secondary and still at DE. But I digress.

And they can’t released him without wasting money. They will have to put him on the PUP is they think he has a shot to play before week 6. If not, he goes on IR. And the Eagles will not waste money. They rather hold a roster spot before they give up money. See Shawn Andrews.

Marlin’s loss has no impact whatsoever; he was FA acquisition and knew he was competing for a roster spot. He’s out but they’ll take care of his med bills. Ridiculous statement about Demps and FO not wanting to be embarrassed. Remember cutting Matt Ware, a 3rd rnd draft pick in ’04? How about cutting Matt McCoy, the second of the 2nd rounders or Ryan Moats the 3rd round pick of in same ’05 draft??

Don’t believe he even qualifies for PUP list under NFL rules either, much less being assigned there in this situation. Teams can release anybody they want!! No guaranteed contracts, only signing bonuses.

Glad to see the eagles addressed their safety position. well. This is the perfect example of this team giving cheap contracts to fragile players on the mend, at the same time overlooking talent like darren sharper, knowing a quality safety would cost. Does this surprise anyone? ,….there’s a golden standard in Philadelphia….Go Phillies!!!!

Songs, you are a tool. Did you miss the part where the Birds used a 2nd round draft pick on a safety? Whether or not he can play, who knows, but they did address the position with the 37th pick in the draft. Go drink some more Haterade.

‘if you stink you stink’ – what about Winston Justice? Demps did have a real shitty year, and nothing special before, but some players do improve with time and learning experiences. I’m not even saying he makes the team, but you guys are prematurely writing him off. And I love how so many people act like this was a sure thing – easy to say now, hindsight is 20/20. But they gave him an incentive contract and it was still probably worth the risk. He injured a different part of his body than what he came here with. Injuries happen, they happen to guys who already have some injuries, and those who don’t. But some of you just want to say ‘i told you so’ and ‘ha, their gamble went bad’.

Iggles, yes they can released him but they would have to negotiate a settlement. That is the only way you can release a player who is currently injured for the upcoming season. They cannot just released him and not pay anything. It doesn’t work like that for injured players. They cannot lose all compensation because of an unforeseen injury. So the team has to decide whether they want to pay him his salary and place him on injured reserve and hope he can come back next year or negotiate the settlement which means they don’t believe in him for the future.

Believe it or not, some players are actually “saved” by being injured because if they wasn’t performing well they could have been cut without any compensation but once they got injured they were protected and will at least get some money.

Sheldon Brown could have been the starting corner or even moved to safety in an emergency situation, and he was the only secondary player left that knew the scheme and could relay this well needed experience to free agents or raw rookies for the future. He told us about asante ignoring the scheme to freelance costing the team twice against dallas. And don’t give me the quinton mikell spill. He was a special team player when thrusted into duty, benefited from the likes of dawk, brown, sheppard, in the secondary. This organizaion have totally eroded the experience, and talent on this team, and continue to buy cheap fixes while disrespecting the players who have lifted the team from obscurity. Keep an eye on the safety and corner positions. Like I said in past blogs, Mcnabb, Romo, and Manning, will have a field day against this secondary.

Sheldon Brown is getting old, got beaten more frequently last year than in past years, is not built to be a safety, he is a corner. He wanted more money and they moved him, big deal, He is just another player. How many 30+ year old corners excel in the league? Not that many, hence the reason Lito had to take a bad deal with the Vikings just to have someplace to play. You whine that the experience level has been eroded, how long would you like old players to be allowed to hang on? Lito and Sheldon replaced Bobby and Troy. Now Allen will play in Dawk’s spot, somebody else will step in to Sheldon’s place. These players do not care about you, they want you to pay up, show up, and shut up. Why do you care if they are disrespected or not? If the new guys can play, we are good, if not, it is a long season. We will see. And Manning has a field day against nobody, he blows.

anderson, oh now “allen the rookie” will take Dawks spot, when the same time last year you probably said….”We have Demps to take Dawks spot”. There is no taking Dawk spot. Right now at Dawks age he can run rings around any safety currently in an eagles uniform…that’s the truth. And by the way “Champ Bailey” is in his 30’s. Ellis Hobs is a bum at corner..he’s a punt returner. Stop making excuses for this declining organizations that have robbed it’s fan base with shortchanging players when they were in a position to win a superbowl. They should have been in the run for darren sharper. If they are not trying to win now, but is in a rebuilding stage, testing players, they aught to tell the people. Instead of this charade playing out before our eyes. Kolb will not measure up to Mcnabb, No safety on this team will measure up to Dawk, and the coaching staff have not shown they can be consistant winners without them. That’s a fact.

S Brown was past his prime and lost a step, S Jones signed with Tampa Bay Bucs and was a bust,
M Ware has actually rebounded pretty well and is a nickle back for Arizona Cardinals
M Harris is not a CB at the NFL level, maybe a back-up Safety and special teamer
E Hobbs is coming off injury and is not really shown to be an every down NFL CB
(he better at nickle coverages in the slot and of course returning kicks on special teams)
Hanson,Patterson,Pope and all back-up,nickle & dime coverages type of players
Lindley is a rookie and will need a season or 2 to be ready at the NFL level…

With all this being said, I think the Eagles need to go out and get a proven CB who can play now and contribute this season.. I still believe that Carolina Panthers starting CB Richard Marshall would
be available via a trade.. He’s a 4 year veteran who got stuck in the Free-Agency where the Panthers
had his rights and only offered a 1 year Contract which he was very unhappy about…He’s 6’0ft,
205 lbs and can fly and loves to play physical,in your face coverage and is very good versus the run.
He would be a perfect fit for this Eagle Defense and is just coming into his Prime as a NFL player..
The Panthers in return need DT/DE/S help on their Defense…
I say trade Starting DT M Patterson and Safety Q Demps and they could get this done…

Paulman, who has the indisputable record for boldy making predictions and statements that are proven wrong in reality, knows everything about all the DBs on this team right now. Players never develop, change, ‘have the lightbulb go on’, rebound. Nope, there’s no examples of that in the NFL. Song, you are dead wrong about Dawk and you know it. If you polled every player in the NFL right now, and said – flat out, who is the best safety in football – you wouldn’t hear many Brian Dawkins. The man is old and needs to be in a system with a constant pass rush, high quality CBs and even then his legs aren’t what they used to be. He WAS frickin AMAZING. But you my friend, let your (albeit admirable) passion, seriously cloud your judgment. Similarly, you are stuck in the past big time.

Phils finish in 2nd place behind the Atlanmta Braves in 2010..
I stated this in Febuary/March and I was almost laughed off this web-site but here we are in June,
and the Phillies are in 2nd place and about to fall back even more… This is not the same Phillie team,
there is a lack of energy it appears and this Phillie bullpen is flat out not good enough to compete with the Braves,Mets,Cardinals,Reds,Dodgers,Giants to win the NL this season and get back to the

Dawk was legendary Eagle. Nobody disputes that. But the fact is, he is not a safety anymore, he is an outside linebacker doing run support. He had two interceptions last year, but he had bucketloads of tackles. Those are not safety stats, they are that of an outside linebacker. Did you see Austin blow by him in the Broncos/ Cowboys game? Did you see Celek run away from him here at the Linc? Even if he had not gone for the cash and left, he is not the same Eagles safety he once was. That’s the fact. A younger faster player had to come in to be the free safety, Dawk couldn’t do it anymore. His shoes perhaps have not been filled, but the truth is he could not longer fill them either. Players come and they go, when they get old and slow (like Sheldon) they go finish their careers elsewhere. That is just modern pro sports.
