Kevin Kolb Gets It Going A Bit At Eagles OTA Workout

I think it’s important that the Eagles offensive brain trust, Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg help Kevin Kolb establish his confidence by helping him get into a rhythm. This means calling some plays that are going to allow him to complete a number of passes in a row.

Kolb started out the 7-on-7 drill in a shaky fashion.  He threw the ball to LeSean McCoy on a wide route.  A wide pattern is when the running back takes off from his position in the backfield and runs on a straight line toward the sidelines.

When he gets about five yards from the sidelines he turns his route upfield.  This a short throw.

After the completion to McCoy, Kolb failed to connect with DeSean Jackson on a curl route.¬† The ball hit Jackson’s hands but it was off line and would have gotten him smacked if it were during a game.

Next up, he missed Brent Celek on a twelve-yard out route.¬† It was off line and too far outside.¬†¬† Celek got his hands on the ball but couldn’t hall it in.¬† It would have been a tough catch.

On the next throw Kolb threw the ball to Leonard Weaver on a crossing route.  This one was a good throw but Weaver bobbled it and wound up dropping it.

After that throw, Kolb’s group gave way to Michael Vick and the second-string offense.¬† I think Kolb is pressing because he wants to show everybody he can do the job.¬† He’s got to learn to relax and let it come to him rather than trying to force things.

The next time Kevin got in there he got things going and seemed to get in a rhythm.

First he hit one of the backs on a check down.¬† Check downs are short routes across the middle, where the running back checks the linebackers to make sure they’re not blitzing then he runs a short crossing route as a safety valve receiver

He then connected with Brent Celek down the seam which was about 20- yard throw.  It took a while to get there, which could get Celek busted up by one of the safeties. I expect Celek to catch a lot of balls this season.

On the next play, Kolb hit Jeremy Maclin on a crossing route at about 25-yards downfield.  It was the best throw he made all afternoon.  Maclin caught the ball in stride and could have taken it the distance in what was now the two-minute drill.

The former Missouri Tiger had beaten cornerback Macho Harris who I don’t think is fast enough to play cornerback in this league.¬† It was a couple of plays before Marlin Jackson went down with the ruptured achilles injury.

The Eagles started the practice with reverses, throw back passes and all types of gadget plays.  Vick got more action running those plays than Kolb.

Anybody who thinks the Eagles are thinking about trading or releasing Vick have got to be kidding.  Vick is getting the chance to run as many plays as Kolb during the practices.

It’s still very early, so don’t overemphasize things that happen at practice because there’s a lot that happens with every young quarterback but you don’t normally hear much of the detail.¬† You can’t make a decision on a guy from a practice because it really doesn’t matter until the pre-season games and ultimately the games start.

Great report! It’s nice to have a description of the routes. I remember when I was young and first started watching football on television. I often was frustrated because the anouncers used terms with which I was unfamiliar. I waited for the explanations, which were given much too infrequently.

For Kolb to press is to expected. By the end of July, he’ll be fine. The only thing he’ll be pressing for is the end of camp.

G, Macho is too slow to play CB in this league. You said this on more than one ocassion. Doesn’t sound too promising and now Marlin is gone. Lot of ??????????????????????????.

Your right G, he has to settle down to be effective, this just seems like the beginning of a problem if this carries on into the preseason especially if Mike Vick looks strong.

wo man. Gotta side with G here. Did this website even exist when McNabb was taking his first few throws of OTAs as the starter? I think not. G’s biases may show at some point, but that’s an unfair comparison. I’d hedge my bets on G’s critical style that he would have been hard on donny (this early in his career) as well.

@The Silencer: garry is the lifetime president of McNabb fan club. His appointment is like that of a supreme court justice. He will always talk about the cannon McNabb has and Kolb doesn’t. He won’t mention the short passes that McNabb throws to some gophers living underground. Like I can’t be convinced that Reid is not a failure because of not delivering the trophy, garry can’t be convinced that McNabb is not the greatest player to play this game. But don’t call him loser. That is uncalled for.

The bottom line is that QB coach of the century, AR, could do nothing, in 10 years, to correct these throwing flaws in McNaab and may have overlooked them when he drafted him. I’m waiting to see how his next QB prodigy developes.

Whoa guys, ease up on G. He just gave a report, he didn’t say he hated the man.

BigE, yeah you right……but you missed the fact that Mcnabb during his time here was a top 5 quarterback and covered andy’s oversized ass many days. Kolb could not get in sniffing distance to Mcnabb’s or Vick’s Jock strap…They are doing the right thing giving Vick reps. When golden boy show his greatest attribute is carrying a clip board and discussing routes with the yong guns after plays, Vick will be there to show the world….He’s back!!!.

Sounds like to me, we need to adress the CB position asap..
If M Jackson has a torn achilles, his season (and possibly career) are most likely over..
I am not sold on E Hobbs being a Full-Time Starter in the NFL as an everydown DB
I would call the Carolina Panthers up and offer Starting DT M Patterson and Safety Q Demps for their
Starting CB Richard Marshall…

Wow Paul, you’re really high on Rich Marshall aren’t you. I do agree that he would be a more dependable upgrade over what we have. However I have a few questions. Yesterday, when the Eagles moved the practice indoors on the ARTIFICAL TURF why in gods name would you put out there Jackson 9coming off knee injuries) and Stew (knee injury) and have them running around with a great risk of getting hurt again?

And BigE, this was a practice for route running without defenders. Kolb probably just tossed it over the middle for a completion and didn’t gun it in there. Yeah, in a live game he would’ve been out to dry but we’re not in a live game are we.

Mancini ehough of the Richard Marshall crap..we see it on every article….Reid sucks..he is a loser look at the shit he puts up…first its DeSean is turning into the next T.O. n complaining about a contract..then next he saying DeSean is stupid for not doing it…Then this article about each and every pass Kolb throws..when his boy mcpoop couldnt hit hit the ground if he tried…Big E..its not that andy couldnt coach the fool…its the fact that Im TOO fat mcnabb isnt an accurate passer period..who know maybe its a RACE thing..
