Shanahan Says Skins Want Westbrook, As They Make Him An Offer

The Washington Redskins already have three veteran running backs on their roster, but head coach Mike Shanahan has made it clear that he wants to add former Eagles running back Brian Westbrook to the fold.

“We want him to sign with us,” Mike Shanahan said of Westbrook. “Like I said, it could be some great competition. I really like Brian, what he’s done and how he’s handled himself. I’m sure he’s weighing some options. It’s not too far away from home. Any more I can do?”

St. Louis and Denver are also interested in signing Westbrook this off season and he hasn’t made up his mind yet, about which team he will sign with.

The Redskins are expected to use Westbrook as their third down back and we know how good he can be when coming out of the backfield as a receiver.¬† The other veteran backs on the roster aren’t very good pass receivers.¬† Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker have been outstanding ball carriers during their careers but never very successful as receivers.

It was reported that former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb had lobbied for the Skins to sign Westbrook, but he denied having any involvement in Washington pursuit of the veteran running back.

“It’s not just pertaining to football,” McNabb said. “I just want the guy to have an opportunity to continue on what he started and prove the critics wrong that he can still play. If it’s here or anywhere else, that would be his decision and for the people upstairs.”

Westbrook had some of his biggest games playing in Washington,Dc in front of lot of his family and freinds since growing up in MD not far from DC.. He would have to sign for a minimum salary which I don’t think he would do… I defintely see 1 and possibly 2 of the 3 RB’s they have under Contract (Portis,Johnson or Parker) struggle to make the final cut for vrious reasons..
All 3 are not very good receivers, all 3 are not very good blockers and Shannahan won’t put up with the pissy attitudes and slack practice habits that have followed all 3 of these RB’s during their careers.. It’s all a question of how bad Westbrook wants to play, if heatlhy, I believe he would beat
out these other chumps for what he brings to the table but he is not an everydown back anymore..
