Andy Reid Says DeSean Jackson Will Be At Training Camp

According to Andy Reid, DeSean Jackson will be at the Eagles training camp at the end of  July at Lehigh University.  Big Red told a gathering of media members after the team finished the last OTA workout, yesterday.

“Yeah, he’ll be here,” Reid said and I know he felt good saying it because the Birds want nothing to do with a Jackson holdout, since he is the most dangerous receiver for young quarterback Kevin Kolb, who is getting ready to start his first year as the team’s number one quarterback.

The Eagles head coach says he spoke to Jackson about being at training camp before the OTA’s started.

Reid made it a point to not saying anything negative about his young receiver.¬† He played down Jackson missing the last week of workouts but couldn’t resist letting us know that he wasn’t happy about it.

“If you’re here, you’re going to get better but, again, if you have personal reasons — and it is a voluntary minicamp on top of that — then you have to do what you have to do,” Reid said.

We’ll see if anything happens with Jackson’s contract between now and when training camp starts but clearly the diminutive Jackson would cause some major problems if he were to hold out.

He has given Reid he word that he won’t.

I don’t understand why the Eagles aren’t giving him additional money. They made it happen for Kevin Kolb who hasn’t done anything yet. Jackson has proved through two seasons that he is a great player and a playmaker. Those don’t come along every day, so pay the man. If they expect him to go through this next season with the measly salary he is getting now (as compared to others on this time and other teams, that is…I’d take his “measly” salary in a heartbeat!), then they are inviting a hold-out. As much as I’m an “honor your contract” kind of guy, he’s stuck in a bad contract because he’s so far outperformed it. Its not fair to ask him to absorb the risk of injury ruining a future big contract. Give him a signing bonus that makes him highly paid this year. Then, with the new CBA done next year, you can sign him to a long term deal that works under the new CBA. This is simple. Come on, Eagles…do the right thing.

Lancaster – don’t you think that Kolb was a different case though, in that he was going to be the ‘starting QB of the future’ with only 1 more year left on his contract? I sure do.

Jackson will be gone after his rookie deal is up for big $$$ that the Eagles won’t be willing to pay..

Paul, can you repeat that? I don’t think most people read it. Post it again on every eagles article. And as for your logic, why would they trade Desean away (for a money saving move you’re saying), straight up for one of the biggest contracts in football? How would that be saving money?

To prove again to the “Tunnel Vision” that is Schiller..
Eagles will pay top $$$$ for certain positions they deem most important and hard to fill
. CB,DE,OT & QB..they will pay for, but not to WR, LB, S, C,OG and RB’s…
With Kolb now at the helm and most likely the fixture at QB for the foreseeable future, D-Jax will not benefit from the shorter routes that this Eagle Offense will now be predicated on, therefore driving his
D-Jax’s overall numbers, productivity and the amounf of big plays down…

June 13, 2010 4:18 am

Ha, I love the argument that trading within the division is automatically stupid. That couldn’t be more dumb. If McNabb loses games against the Eagles for the most part, and the Eagles play better than washington (as they have for the vast majority of the past 11 years) then it’s a good move. If Nate Allen and whoever we get with the McNabb pick next year turn out to be good or better than good… There’s really no logic to the idea that trading within the division is bad. And to the haters – I’m talking bout this in the pure sense of the notion, I’m not talking about Andy Reid or the Eagles FO – any interdivision trade from any team is what I’m talking about. If the Pats were to trade Randy Moss to the Dolphins for some draft picks, Moss and fins stunk it up after, but the pats played really well and did well with the picks…

I think Desean will get a raise and if not he sure does deserve one but I think looking at the game he had in Dallas last year will be a big factor this year now that the nucleus is out there at how to shut Desean down. I think they want to see how he fairs up against other defenses this year.

Paul I like the idea but at the same time I dont because its like giving up a solution to gain a problem. I look for the next 2-3 years for this team to rebuild thru the draft unless the team we have now can step up tremdously…. That remains to be seen.

I would like to emphasize that I wish the Eagles lock in D JAx with a long-term deal to have him remain
an Eagle for a long time… But what I wish for and expect to happen are 2 different things from the Eagles FO.. It all comes down to what D-JAx/Agent are going to ask for… The Eagles are not going to
spend/sgign a $35-$40 Million deal on a WR… It’s not going to happen…

June 13, 2010 7:30 am

Paulman – (I admittedly haven’t done my homework yet on this one, but) when was the last time that the Eagles didn’t lock up one of their successful draft picks? Derick Burgess comes to mind, but he was nowhere near the success of Desean when he left the Eagles and I really can’t think of anyone else. Your $ for a WR is duly noted and makes sense – but they always lock up their good players. When Lito and Sheldon were locked up (at the time) they got good money. Assuming the CBA mess gets solved somehow, I see no reason why they wouldn’t do a deal of some sort at that point. It’s just to early and too chaotic of circumstances right now to do it. They’ve NEVER HAD a great WR/rookie contract situation before so there’s no point of comparison – TO wasn’t close to a rook. They locked up Avant (albeit for a different price level due to his different role). They made Weaver the highest paid FB ever. They gave Asante, Peters, Celek, Stacy A. (initially), Kolb, etc… good money. There’s no precedent for your WR argument so it’s kinda moot. Again, when have they not locked up rising stars (Trent Cole too).

Paul Mancini

That “hater/instigation” cloud seems to follow me around sometimes,
I have been an Eagle Fan since the early 70’s and remember the really bad years so I am grateful that since Lurie/Banner/AR & Company have taken over. Snice the last 11-12 years or so, the Eagle Franchise has consistently ranked in top 6-8 teams in the NFL and even in the top 5 for a few seasons. Obviously they know how to run a football organization as far from a business standpoint, scouting, drafting, coaching and evaluating talent and have been right more times than not.. The expectations/bar has been risen every year that a lot fans (especially the younger ones) don’t recall the lean years which is fine, I have been hard on this FO from time to time, but at the end of the day, you cannot argue with their results… How many NFL Franchises have been on the run that the Eagles have had over the last dozen years or so… (Pats,Colts,Giants Chargers,Steelers and still some of these teams have had turmoil, injuries, bad draft choices,off-the field problems) ..
Now the onus will fall squarely on AR, I believe for he will attempt to lead a very young team with a 1st year Starter and a big makeover on the Defense..They may indeed take a short step back this year but should be well-poised for 2011 and beyond if key players stay healthy.. They have a lot of talent to grrom and I think the Coaching staff in general has a sense of renewed energy and focus to get this young talent up to speed and on the field to make plays.. I am looking forward to this camp
as any in recent history for there is a lot of new faces, some new coaches, new leadership and great competition for starter positions at many positions. There is more talent on paper, than the Eagles have had in a long time and now in a few weeks it’s time to put these players and coaches to the test
and seperate the Men from the Boys ..

Paul, not surprisingly that that post made me smile. I still wonder about your reaction to my post (2) before yours. And given what you just said, do you see how playing around with ideas like losing desean – for which there is very little evidence, Stew Bradley being seriously injured (as a joke with fake back story) etc… would tend towards causal negativity? Look man, I post a ton on this site, and probably a bit too much (I’m sure my biggest ‘opposition’ would agree there) – but you definitely take the cake for most and longest posts. That said, when you’re posting so much it seems inevitable that you would spew some stuff out without really self-editing. Think about the potential harm you cause when you put legs behind holdout rumors or negativity toward the FO. I’m not saying they’re perfect, I don’t even really like any of the FO except for Andy Reid and I think he’s far from a perfect coach. In fact, I still to this day challenge anyone to find me speaking highly of the FO, still the haters say I kiss their asses or something like that. I just take issue with what I see as illogical, weakly thought out, and blatant negativity. The best example is those who revel in the fat jokes and ‘cheap’ BS. If the Eagles one the SB, nobody would care that the coach was fat or what the salaries of the players were. You are not a hater, but you do speak casually about the Eagles whereas most of us, myself included tend to be more on the serious side.

Ok I found a website – advancedNFLstats.com I guess that’s what you were talking about. They chose from 96-2008 – so that includes three years of a different FO, doesn’t include Jackson, Maclin, and many others. Regardless, the Eagles are 15th in one chart – with a lot of teams above 15 – jacskonville, Cincinnati, Chicago, Jets, Cowboys, Seahawks, RAIDERS, and RAMS who for the most part have been much less successful than the Eagles over that period. The site is just 1 guys algorithms… plus in the ‘probowl’ chart, the Eagles are #3. I don’t really see how this proves your point that much Big E.

BigE

June 14, 2010 6:51 am

10 of the probowl apperances are from Rhoads picks and 2 from players the Eagles got rid of and 1 was TO. In the stats you refer to I believe 15th, 13th and 3rd averages out to about 10th. However you used the 3rd. If you look at all the drafts under the Reid era 1999 to 2009 you will see that way less than 50% of the players are still with the team. I used 2004 to 2009 but if you use years prior to 2004 under Reid it gets worse. Your 30-40 % is bogus and that was my point, but you always try to wiesel you way out of your it.

The key to me is what draft picks stay anmd make this roster and play..
Having a roster full of 5th/6th/7th Rd picks and unsigned free-agents is what the Eagles have had a lot of recent years.. I am more concerned with the flat out missses of the 2nd/3rd/4th Rounds that seem to happen too often with the AR/Heckert regime
Laws,Abriami, McDougle,McCoy,Gocong,B Smith,M Ware,F Mitchell, T Hunt, Jack Ike, Q Demps..
Many of these players were chosen in the top #100-#120 selections..
T Cole, T Herremans, B Celek, M Fokou were all excellent picks from the 5th Rd on…
I guess it comes down to this… Are the Eagles better prepared, better talent evaluators with the
late round picks who end up making the team and some into good players,or are they inept so often in the early rounds that this misses allow some of these later rounds & unsigned free-agent players stay around and make the team and become starters (Mickell,D Patterson, J Hanson, A Jordan, J Mays, J Parker,H Baskett, J Jackson, N Cole, etc, etc)
Making reaches with a 5th/6th/7th Rounder is one thing, but missing so often in RD’s #2 thru #4
is the difference in winning Championships..

Paul…you hit it right on.

If they hit on more of the top picks, some of our players wouldn’t have made the team..or at least been good depth instead of starting because the players picked ahead of them couldn’t play. Song, in our defense, he was a major liability in the passing game the last year and a half he played in Philly. He was also injured. He had a resurgency in Denver but it was a different system, with a dynamic pass rush that we didn’t have last year. If you disagree with any of that, back your opinion up with substance and we’ll see. Your statement also implies that you know exactly how Nate Allen will play in the future. Psychics don’t exist smart guy. You’re making assumptions – that’s dumb. And Dawkins chose to leave on his own accord for insane money that was way more than he deserves.

SONGSRME2
SONGSRME2
June 15, 2010 1:10 am

Another thing………..If Dawkins decided not to leave for insane money, would he have still been a liability? Was he not better in coverage than every safety on our team last year?

And, Denver didn’t think it was insane money..it was “pro bowl player” money. Yes, he made it to another pro bowl. Stop using the eagles front office spins..hell Lurie, even admitted that was one he could have handled differently. Get your head out of Andy’s booty.

schiller
schiller
June 15, 2010 5:09 am

Songs- to answer your first question – yes, the guys they replaced Dawkins with last year were a liability in the passing game, the solution they tried did not work at all last year. My argument concerning the choice last year was that the Eagles didn’t make it. Their intention wasn’t – ‘let’s not go w/ Dakwins’. Their intention was, lets start the bargaining with a low bid – like every bargaining process begins. Then, instead of rejecting the offer and asking for more, Dakwins side went with a (similarly timed) RIDICULOUSLY overpaying contract offer from Denver. So the choice was Dawkins’ – to negotiate up the Birds and stay in Philly, or go for the money. They Eagles couldn’t make that ‘choice’ for him. In terms of how they tried to replace him, yeah it didn’t work out, at all. But if you think the fact that the D coordinator died, leaving a rookie D coordinator with little time to prepare for a season on his own, then our rising MLB got injured for the year. Then his backup did! Put it all together – the LBs in front of the rook Safety were messed up and influx, the system was, and on top of that they were a failing project – demps – and a cornerback attempt. The team drafted Maclin last year, McCoy, and Ingram ahead of Macho. They got very good value for the picks ahead of him, and were hoping for Demps to still develop. In hindsight, sure they could’ve drafted a safety higher, but they got very good weapons.

schiller
schiller
June 15, 2010 5:25 am

As for Nate Allen, he’s a completely different thing than the ones they tried before – Gaddis, Considine, Demps, Harris, none of them was all of these – played FS full time in college, known for his smarts, known for his versatility (run and pass), known for his athleticism, and widely deemed ‘NFL ready’. Also, with none of those others were they saying that they picked up the defense as much as Allen has this early. Could he be another bust or take a while to be good? Sure, I don’t predict the future like many fans do. But he seems to be a different kind of prospect than the Eagles have tried at safety in a long time.

schiller
schiller
June 15, 2010 5:34 am

Answering your other questions – if Dawk decided to stay, yes he would have still been a liability – different systems, and without Stew Bradley, or Gaither, in the middle, with the Sean McD. thrown in to the line of fire situation, Dawk would have continued to be a liability in the passing game in my opinion. Denver was a completely different D, and a D that played worse as the season went on. Dakwins would have been tired and beat up late in the season and into the playoffs ala Sheldon was – and Dawk is older and more beaten up (over his career) than Sheldon. No he was not better in coverage than Q Mikell last year. He benefited from having a better pass rush – dummerville had a sick season – and playing in a really weak division. Also, Denver knew it was insane money. They were making all sorts of insane moves last year. It was ‘prow bowl player’ and THEN SOME money. EVERYONE knows that man – they gave him a contract that is structured for a guy who will play at a probowl level for many seasons to come – that’s not Dawk. And sure Lurie admitted that – in hindsight, knowing that Denver was going to go higher and then overboard on top of that, and Dawk was going to get an ego booboo from it, sure, in hindsight (ha 20/20, how apropo). And once again, this has nothing to do with Andy Reid or what I think of him. Stay relevant man.
