Cooper Vs. Baskett: Who Wins The Battle For The 4th WR Spot?

It’s still a bit odd that the Eagles actually have a surplus of receivers, but that’s the issue they’ll be facing during training camp.

There will have to be some talented guys released or stowed away on the practice squad, but deciding who that will be could prove one of the more difficult decisions this coaching staff will have to make.

As of now, fifth-round pick Riley Cooper and Hank Baskett, in his second stint with the Eagles, are the two guys fighting it out for the fourth receiver spot. DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, and Jason Avant are the unquestioned top three (in that order), so fourth is the best either of these guys will do.

It’s anyone’s job for the moment, but Cooper certainly produces the most intrigue as a rookie over a guy in Baskett who is unlikely to have a breakout season after years of being a role player.

But no matter who wins the fourth job, it’s likely the other will simply be relegated to the fifth spot and will have to play a lot of special teams — something that would fit either of these guys who are known for their willingness to play the most inglorious of roles.

However, Jordan Norwood, who was active and played in one game last season, as well as Dobson Collins, who spent 2009 on the Eagles’ practice squad, and Chad Hall could all make a push for that fifth spot.

Norwood and Collins boast experience, however minor, but Hall would really be the guy to watch here. He’s got some added value as a return man and could look like a great opportunity to take Jackson off punt return and not risk an injury.

But if we really want to throw a wrench in this whole thing, we’ll have to consider the possibility that Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg see Cornelius Ingram as more of a receiver than a tight end.

If that’s the case, it would be very hard to see him not make the squad as at least the fifth receiver based purely on potential if nothing else.

The Birds did go out and draft Clay Harbor, a guy they really seem to like, in the fourth round and have also kept Martin Rucker around. Rucker is a guy they picked up off the street last season, but just the fact that he has stuck around for this long, even on the practice squad, shows the coaches believe he can play.

There’s no way this team heads into September with four tight ends, so moving Ingram to receiver and making the battle for fourth a do-or-die type scenario is a very real possibility.

Obviously, there is a lot of time to see what these guys have. Cooper could completely shut down once the pads come on, Baskett could light it up, Rucker could look terrible and get cut, Ingram could tear his ACL again (fingers crossed that doesn’t happen), etc. etc. so I’ll have to wait until Training Camp to make any real predictions.

However, if I did have to guess right now, I would probably put my money on Baskett and Cooper both sticking around as the fourth and fifth receivers respectively, while Rucker is once again tossed on the practice squad or cut and Ingram is kept around as Brent Celek’s backup.

Harbor would then become the third tight end and backup fullback — a position he’s seen a little bit of time at during minicamp and OTA’s. So, basically, the guy is an H-back.

Either way, this is going to be one hell of a camp battle that I can’t wait to watch unfold.

Good stuff Bob,
Paulman’s forecast of the WR and TE Position’s for the 2010 Seasib (barring injuries)

WR (5) – D-Jax,J Maclin,J Avant,Cooper & Baskett (Hall to the Practice Squad)
TE (3) – Celek, Ingram and Harbor who will see time as an H-Back and line up all over the place similar to a Chris Cooley, Dallas Clark type (Rucker will go to the Practice Squad)

Hall could be a wildcard for a 5th WR Spot if he shines in the return game as a Kick-off/Punt returner.. I am not so sure how long the Eagles want their #1 WR (D-JAx) to be returning Punts for fear of injury though he’s one of the best in the NFL.
If Hall sticks as a #5 WR then look for H Baskett to be cut, I think R Cooper makes this team as
the #4 WR and gets on the field quite a bit in 2010 and makes some plays (especially in the Red Zone where the smaller Jax/Maclin are not as effective)

I like Cooper based on what I hear about him good hands speed and plays special teams. Baskett doesn’t have good hands and has issues of a personal nature. Remember he was acquired in a trade with
the Vikings for Billy McMullen another Reid phenom who had bad hands and was penalty prone on special teams, more than just a project, sort of like a receiver’s Booker.

If Cooper can catch the fade route consistently in the red zone (Baskett cannot), then I say he gets the 4th spot. I’ve heard a lot of good things so far about this kid.

Hopefully, we’ll enjoy the best of both worlds.

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2010/06/12/eagles-want-to-extend-finish-drives-better

New Eagles QB Kevin Kolb made it clear that he hopes one thing will be the same from last year’s offense. “We love the quick strike,” Kolb said. “I don’t think that’s going to change. Hopefully, it doesn’t change.”

Kolb spoke with PFW this week about the evolution of the Eagles’ offense. Although he said he feels he is running the same system he has for his first three seasons, during which he primarily backed up Donovan McNabb, the coaches are expected to play to Kolb’s strengths as much as they can.

Kolb might not have McNabb’s arm strength, but sources around the team think he has better short- and medium-range accuracy and will be a quicker decision maker in time. TE Brent Celek, one of Kolb’s closer friends on the team, says he has not noticed much of a difference in what the Eagles have run this offseason.

“It’s obviously early here in (OTAs), but I have not seen much difference,” Celek told PFW. “Maybe we’ll see more (of a difference) in training camp, but for right now it’s just business as usual.”

Although the playbook won’t change dramatically, one area of emphasis should. As dangerous an offense as the Eagles had last season, mostly under McNabb, there was a subtle downside to their tendency to score quickly. They often lost the time-of-possession battle, and by season’s end it appeared that the defense was worn out.

Kolb hopes that the team can maintain its quick-strike ability while also learning how better to finish off drives and control the clock in certain situations.

“We always want to get better on red-zone efficiency and overall efficiency,” he said. “This offense is built on that. The quarterbacks in the past have had a lot of success (and) have been very consistent. But those are two things that you can always get better at. We always stress consistency. We always stress efficiency.”

Hank may not be a great receiver however his strengths are his special teams play (SB snafu excluded) and his blocking ability as a WR. He’s a asset in that respect to the run game and we’ve seen him time and time again clear the way for a ball carrier to allow a big gain. He has his “role” as everyone keeps bringing that up in just about every article. If A. Samuels can be a role CB with his INT’s but poor tackling than Hank can be a role WR with his blocking/ST play with marginal WR production stats.

Well, I hope that Coops abilities transfer onto the NFL level. I too have a soft spot for “The Lil Guy” Chad Hall. He seems like he’s a “Wes Welker” type that can work the short slants and curls and use his speed to his advantage. We could use a sneaky cat like that…

Really Ingram a WR that sound kind of dumb. He has the skills to be a real good TE. Didnt people compare him to Shannon Sharpe last year. Why take a fast TE and make him a slow WR. We have Avant to play the slot.

PW & WWW & anyone else –
Lakers win by 20 tonight in a blow out (games basically over b mid-3rdquarter) final 107-87
This ties series at 3-3 forcing a game 7 which I call for the Celtics to win 91-89 on a last second scoop shot to the hoop made by R Rondo..
The Celtics win the Championship 4 games to 3 which is what I called for before the series started..

Just wait until game 7…
6 seconds left, Rondo takes pass from Peirce at the top of the key, and drives down the lane with Kobe hanging all over hiim and then slides under Gasol for a little scoop shot that bounces around the rim and finally comes thru the net as time expires with the Celtics winning 91-90 and the Championship..
As a side note, Jack Nichalson runs across the court (with Dianne Carroll hanging on his leg) and attempts to strangle R Rondo at Center Court as the Celtics Celebrate to make for great TV and one of the wildest finishes and post-game ceremonies in a long time… )

Baskett should get the 4th spot, it’ll guarantee a lot less stupid mistakes from at least one position. It’ll be nice for the Eagles to get either Ryan Mallet or Jake Locker in this year’s draft though.
