Eagles eyeing Troy Smith as Vick replacement?

While it seems like right now the Philadelphia Eagles plan on standing behind their backup QB Michael Vick, you never know how these things will turn out. Virginia Beach police declared that the birthday party shooting was a closed case. However, the DA in Virginia Beach came out recently and said that’s not exactly true.

However, there is still no link to Vick and the shooting. But, that doesn’t mean that the Eagles won’t grow tired of the distraction and eventually part ways with him.

Howard Eskin of 610 WIP tweets that if the Eagles do move on from Vick, they could be checking out former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith from the Ravens as a replacement.

“Eagles looking at QB troy smith from baltimore just in case they blow up michael vick. And they will find another QB,” he tweets.

Eskin’s next tweet was much more forceful and I don’t know if it has any basis in fact, but still.

“Say goodbye to vick!!!,” he tweets.

Say what you want about Eskin (and I’m sure you will). You may like him or not, but he does have his connections to the organization. I don’t know if this last tweet was based on people he spoke to or if it’s just wishful thinking.

Regardless, bringing in Smith would be a definite downgrade. And people that read this site regularly know that I don’t care much for Vick on or off the field. But he’s still a much better player than Smith, who hasn’t been able to get on the field since being drafted in 2007.

T Smith has some potential, but not ready as a back-up #2 player for 2010 Season..
If the decision is to release Vick (which I would understand and support) then they would need
a QB with Experience in the event that Kolb became injured
Paulmans List of experienced QB’s who could serve as a Back-Up for 2010 Season
#1) S Rosenfels (currently on Vikings as a 3rd String)
#2) B St Peirre (currently on Arizona as a 3rd String)
#3) Seneca Wallace (currently a back-up for Celevland Browns)
#4) Patrick Ramsey (currently on Lions Roster)
#5) J McNown (free-agent and coming off injury)
#6) M Brunell (free-agent I believe)
#7) J Garcia (free-agent)
#8) B Leftwich or C Batch (back-ups on Steelers for Big-Ben)
#9) C Frye (back-up with Raiders to J Campbell & B Gadkowski)
#10) B Volek (back-up on the Chargers)

A least these 10-11 QB’s have started games in the NFL and have some experience under their belts.. Some of these teams drafted yound QB the past year or 2 so some of them may be willing to trade a current back-up to give time for a draft pick and make a player become expendable..

Garcia makes the most sense. He knows the players, and the plays. Scap the wildcat . The last think Kolb needs is to get into a rhythm and then get taken out for some stupid gadget play.

I would love if the eagles would make a move for troy smith. As long as vick is on the team there is going be that little voice in everyone’s ear when kolb is playing mediocre saying “put in Vick”. Troy Smith is a heisman winner and two years ago he was slated as harbaughs starter but then he got sick and flacco went in and never lost the job. Troy smith and jeff garcia are about the same size. Troy smith is probably 13-14 years younger. Smith can move, and he is pretty accurate (more accurate then vick). The only upside with garcia is that he knows the offense like the back of his hand. Pman has a really so so list, outside of sage rosenfels, theres not a guy on there that brings any confidence to the team and the only reason i say rosenfels is because he has played and he has worked in this style offense.

My list Loki is based on who is out there in a back-up status that their current teams might be willing to move/trade to the Eagles.. As you can see, pretty slime pickens at this point…

Vick is no a stand up guy, but he is the best back-up in the league, thats a fact. If he didn’t do anything wrong then we shouldn’t move him.

To KTDawk
Vick the best back-up QB in the NFL… are you kidding me…
Check some stats and you will find the Following QB’s who have had better stats,QB Rating and more of an impact for their teams in 2009 than Vick did with the Eagles last year…….
#1) Dixon/Batch – for the Steelers
#2) B Gradkowski- For the Raiders
#3) S Wallace – for the Seahawks
#4) M Moore – for the Panthers (remember that J Delhomme was Starter to begin 2009)
#5) A Smith – for the 49ers (remember that S Hill was Starter to begin 2009)
#6) M Lineart – for the Cardinals
#7) B Volek – for the Chargers
#8) C Pennington/C Henne – for the Dolphins (Pennington was Starter to begin 2009)
#9) D Anderson – for the Browns (B Quinn was Starter to begin 2009)
#10) V Young – for the Titans (K Collins was Starter to being 2009)

I just listed quickly about 1/3 of the NFL’s teams who finishing/starting QB’s began the 2009 Season
as back-ups… How many plays was Vick even on the field for in 2009– (less than a 100 plays) …
These 10 QB’s above had much more of an impact and Stats that Vick did,and I am sure I missed a couple of others… C’mon Man…

Continued…

#11) K Boller – for the Rams ( M Bulger began 2009 Season as Starter)
#12) R Fitzpatrick – for the Bills (T Edwards began 2009 Season as Starter)
#13) D Culpepper- for the Lions (filled in for the injured Stater M Stafford)

As you can see– 40% of the teams had back-up QB’s who performed better and made more of an impact than Vick did in 2009..

Absolutely not on D Clark.. He’s not a NFL QB and doesn’t have the arm or the ability to read coverages quickly enough at the NFL level…QB’s from Penn State are no better than most High_School QB’s from FL,TX,Ca these days.. The Penn State Offense is so Vanilla, so basic, that whoever QB’s there just never really improves to a NFL type of QB… It is what it is..
