Can Kolb Take Care Of The Football While Throwing It 40 Times A Game?

You can’t help but be impressed by Kevin Kolb’s abilty to respond to the questions he’s peppered with by the reporters.¬† He talked about his father telling him as a young boy that you have to live as if everybody has their eyes on you.

He was raised in Texas by a football coach and in Texas football is on the same level of importance to many people as their religion and family.  They worship the gridiron in the Lone Star State, so Kolb is prepared for all Philadelphia has to offer, as long as the team enjoys some level of success.

He’ll know what to say to avoid the petty controversies that Donovan McNabb found himself in week after week.¬† Terrell Owens is on his way out of the league, so Kolb won’t ever have to deal with him. ¬†¬† Should he be forced to deal with a teammate who is going to the media and chopping him down, I think he’ll be able to deal with it.

Kolb is going to have some mishaps in front of the mic, but he’s not going to have any overwhelming problem off the field but on the field is where his biggest challenge lies.¬† This team won’t have a problem scoring points because I think he’ll get the ball to his playmakers and they will do their thing.

I sit and listen to people talk about all these things Kolb is going to be able to do that McNabb couldn’t but rarely do you hear them talk about the strongest part of McNabb’s game.

He knows how to take care of the football.  Think about it.  McNabb played in Philadelphia for 11 years and led a pass-happy offense yet, he threw only 100 interceptions in over 4700 pass attempts.

I know he held the ball too long quite a few times.  I know he chose not the throw the ball when a big play might have been the result but he refused to turn over the football.

It’s simple.¬† Winning teams take care of the football.¬† Losing teams don’t.

I think Kevin Kolb’s career, this current Eagles football team and this season will be decided by how well the young signal caller can stay away from intercpetions.¬† It’s hard to appreciate somebody for something that they didn’t do, but as time goes by I think Eagles fans are going to appreciate McNabb’s ability to throw the ball 40 times and not throw a pick.

McNabb was second best in the history of the game when it came to throwing the football but not throwing interceptions.  Not one of those low worm balls were ever picked off.

Kolb may turn out to be a great quarterback but he’s going to throw many more interceptions than McNabb.¬† The big question will be how many does he throw and when does he throw them.¬† If he can stay away from the picks, this football team should have success.

I stand there on the sidelines of the Eagles practice field and watch Kolb throwing the slants, curls, hooks and crossing routes.¬† Many of them are so perfectly thrown that you couldn’t hand that ball to the receiver any better.¬† He throws a catchable ball and¬† most of them above the waist.¬† He had one low throw all practice.

The team will have more plays in their drives this year.¬† They’ll put together, nine ten, eleven, and twelve play drives this year and that will create plenty of opportunities for interceptions.

Kolb will be throwing the ball early.  Many times the ball will be in the air before the receiver comes out of his break. McNabb would wait for the receiver to get open then rifle it to him.  Throwing it early means taking more chances.

Kolb will be throwing the ball over the middle a lot.¬† He’ll be throwing a catchable ball.¬† There are dropped balls which give defenders a chance to pick them off and there are tipped ball which give defenders a chance to pick them off.

Can Andy Reid ask Kevin Kolb to throw the ball across the middle and underneath time after time and the young quarterback will be able to stay away from throwing interceptions?¬† That’s the multi-billion dollar question.

Name a QB that hasn’t thrown a INT. Jysus, Farve is tops in the NFL history books in throwing INT’s and he won a ring. Kolb will throw INT’s, probably quite a few of them, some will be his fault, some will be the receiver running the wrong route, some will be a tip ball, these things you can only control so much. What will make him better is WHEN he tosses a pick, or a pick6 even, how does the kid come back on the field? Does he hang his head low and kick the turf or does he suck it up and put the ball right back out there. Does his team mates rally around him and lift him up as he would to them if any mistake was made? So McNabb is #2 in History for ball protection..great…that means Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, Montana, Young, Bradshaw, Marino, shoot…even Slingin Sammy Baugh…threw INT’s. Turnovers are part of the game, just like TD’s and FG’s. You can’t crucify him when he throws a pick, it happens to every QB in the league eventually.

“I know he held the ball too long quite a few times. I know he chose not the throw the ball when a big play might have been the result but he refused to turn over the football.”

That was the problem. Scared to take a shot at the big play in fear of throwing an interception. Maybe that big play wins you a game, or gives the team a spark. Maybe it turns out to be the play that loses the game. Who knows….the fact of the matter is you can’t be scared to go out there and make a throw, regardless of the result. Take the chance, maybe not all the time, but more often than not take the chance.

There are no awards for least INT’s thrown.

And phillywill, this is no shot at McNabb. It’s an overall assessment of the QB position. Take the chance to get the reward. If you get burned, go back out there and take another chance. So please spare me your McNabb faithful jargon.

Yeah, it’s hard to pick McNabb off unless your already laying on the ground waiting for it. 😛

Thats the Million dollar question isnt it. We have been lucky for the past 10 years with that. McNabb has the lowest Int % in the history of the NFL. Lets HOPE Kolb was paying attention. Cause if he has like 10 to 15 INTs with this young Defense there could be some trouble.

PW, we said the same things about McNabb when he was starting out, who knew then by the end of his time in Philly he would be #2 all time with the lowest INT%, he could’ve just as easily been #5 all time at throwing INT’s, you just don’t find out till the time is put in. I’m not expecting Kold to crack the top 10 all time in low INT’s but the kid hasen’t even started playing yet, and EVERY QB wants to protect the ball, my point was INT’s happen. It’s what you do afterwards that makes the difference, I just hope it’s not air guitar…sorry, couldn’t resist, it’s just too funny.
