Kolb And Eagles Get Off To A Good Start

There were good plays by Kevin Kolb and the Eagles offense and there were bad plays by Kolb and the Eagles offense but all-in-all the Birds got off to a good start.

Kolb got the offense moving from his first snap and didn’t look back.  He hit DeSean Jackson for a 21-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage.  The Birds got the speedy Jackson matched up against a Jags linebacker and it was no contest.

Later in that drive, Kolb hit Jeremy Maclin for 29 yards and like most of the completions by the new starting Birds quarterback, it was a throw was in the middle of the field.

Kolb was doing a good job of getting pre-snap reads of the Jaguars defensive coverages.  When he could, Kolb was getting the ball out of his hands very quickly.

One of Kolb’s attempts was to Jason Avant and it was a bad decision.  It hit the defender in the hands but Avant locked one of the defenders arms so he couldn’t catch the football.

Kolb was undaunted by the near interception and put the next throw on the money to tight end Brent Celek, but he was unable to hang onto it.

They were able to score three points on that drive.

Kolb led the Eagles on another drive which led to another field goal.  He made some good throws to Maclin and Jackson, but also came close to throwing an interception or two.

Kolb handed the ball to Jackson on a reverse and the wide receiver faked a Jags defender to the ground.

It was a nice start for Kolb and the Eagles as we got a chance to see a sampling of the good and the bad.  It was definitely more good than bad, in our first look at this young football team.

Kolb finished 6 for 11 passing for 95 yards which led to two field goals.

Mike Vick showed some promise when he took the field.  He hit wide receiver Riley Cooper on a 46-yard bomb on his second throw of the game.  Unfortunately, Vick turned the ball over when he had the football knocked out of his hand.

Vick also took off on a scramble for a touchdown, but later on he threw an interception.  The receiver was open as he rolled to his right, but he threw ball behind the intended receiver.

I’m on 610-WIP tonight from 11pm-1am, so leave your comments about the game right here and I will talk about them over the air.

So glad to hear you on 610 doing the post game G!!..So sad to see that Songs has the first post. Yeah Vick looked good..until the bone headed interception..and then the fumble..One thing that will guarantee losses..Turnovers..The number 1 offense is what I’m looking forward to see. The Defense..Back to back 3 and outs..Great first pre-game all in all.

No don’t start Vick. Granted he looked faster than last year but he’s still looking to run first and had TWO turnover. Back ups or not he did not look that good. And the only TD he scored was running it in not passing. You know what we call that? The wildcat.

Kolb on the other had was mostly positive. He had a couple near bad plays that he needs to work on and they need to work more on the redzone but it was a good start.

Hard to get a good read on the Eagles D. Not sure if they’re that improved or if the Jags were just that bad. Hobbs looked pretty good and Assante made a nice tackle where he even wrapped up.

Vick used to be called the most exciting player in the NFL. To me right now that distinction belongs to Jackson. He is just unbelievably fast and he has some moves to go along with them. He got extra yards on his catches and that fake out on the end around was a thing of beauty.

Maclin looked good.
McCoy had some nice runs.
Celek needs to hold on to that ball.
I liked that Lindley almost had an INT late in the game.
Patchwork as the o-line was they did a pretty good job considering.

I feel that the Eagles were reluctant last year to not include Danny Amendola on the 53 man roster last year, and this year they’ll be hanging on to Danny Amendola 2.0 a.k.a. Chad Hall.
Hall is a good receiver, generally reliable hands, can be used in the backfield, and can return punts and kicks
I like to think he’ll make this team this year, probably as a 7th WR

Not good in the redzone and poor return coverage, otherwise some good throws by the Qb’s and some not so good. A lot of speed on offense and defense. Better than I expected.

Hey G. Listening to you right now on 610. Interested to get your take on whether you think Andy Reid philosophically this year with Kolb at quaterback will run an offense similar to what he ran when he had Jeff Garcia at quarterback. Both Kolb and Garcia bring similar physical attributes to the table. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks G!

Free agent offensive tackle was awesome. Chad Hall a bit too slow for NFL. Sure hands. Another Reno Mahe.

Run pass ratio excellent. time of possession lopsided back to redzone practice

Different QB same problem. Redzone failure! Funny Mcnabb didn’t have a problem getting the Skins into the end zone. Mcnickel must be thrilled to not be passing the ball 3 consecutive plays from first and goal.

I found it interesting at the game that all the other preseason game scores came on the board except the Redskins game. Now seriously, this shows how petty the Eagles are. McNabb played 2 series and only account for 1 of the TDs but they didn’t want to show 35-3 on the board because they didn’t want the fans to see that. A couple fans in my section noticed that as well and then we found out the score and was like “that’s why they don’t want to show it”. But they happily showed the Thursday scores and last night’s Atlanta game scores. What’s the deal with that? It’s only preseason and real fans who know the NFL aren’t going to care that the Redskins are blowing out the Bills in preseason, but apparently the Eagles cared enough to not show it. I’d bet if the score was reverse, they would have showed it and have Spadaro announce like it halftime “analysis”. They are very very petty.

Now my observations from the game are pretty much the same as most

Kolb – Looked sharp and made some nice throws and some poor ones. I think at times he’ll look great and at other he’ll struggle this year. The difference will be those INTs that could have been caught. Some teams will drop them like the Jags and some teams will catch them.

Vick – Fast! Looked way better than he did this time last year. Gotta get down on that fumble. Can’t hold that ball out there with defenders around you in the middle of the field. The INT wasn’t really his fault. The intended receiver looked like he was going to keep running and he decided to jog the rest of the route. Nice deep pass that was thrown effortlessly.

Offensive line – Didn’t look too bad. We’ll see.

1st Def – Look good but didn’t play enough. That’s good and bad. Good because they shut down a garbage Jags offense which they should, and bad because they didn’t get a lot of reps. I will suffice for the 1st preseason game.

Backup Def – Got torched by the Jags backups. I hope none of the starters get injured for a long period of time in that secondary.

Special teams – Kickoff coverage stinks. Chad Hall is too slow. If you’re going to be that small you have to be able to outrun people and there were time where he had more than a few steps on a defensive player and it looked like he would turn the corner and he’d get caught easily. He won’t be making the team.

Overall, I’m pretty much still in the same place as I was before. The offense moved the ball and stalled in the redzone which is familiar. Celek should have caught that touchdown but 2 plays before that the Jags should have had an INT so it balances out. The WRs were running wide open. I think neither team really wanted to show anything at all because they play again early in the season. 1st team defense will get tested against Palmer, Owens, Ochocino, and Benson. And the offense will play against a better defense. I think we’ll have some great showings and not so great this year. Which has always been my stance.

I think the redzone problem is playcalling. The Eagles like to go shotgun in the redzone and that sort of helps the defense.Remember Jacksonville is one of the three worst teams in the league including Buffalo and Tampa. You must have run and pass threat in the redzone.

BigE. I agree that’s the problem, playcalling is always questionable. I know you want to keep thing vanilla in the preseason so let your RBs go to work down there and see what they can do. You get a nice run to get you all the way down there and then 3 straight passes where Kolb forces one, one dropped and another missed. I’m sure redzone will be better but Andy’s/Marty’s playcalling will still baffle us throughout the year.

Big E,
I don’t think Jaguars are one of the bottom 3 teams of the NFL, (they will win 6-7 games)
You have the Rams,Chiefs,Lions,Browns & Seahwaks who will most likely all struggle more than the Jags this season along with the Bills and Bucs you mentioned….

The Jags starting offensive tackles did not play and this does not bode well for the defensive end pressure,

This game said Kolb will effeciently run the offense and get in the red zone and stall or throw an interception ala Baltimore game to Reed..I watched and any other good secondary would have had a pick 6, but it’s not Koln’s fault. Reid must change his philosophy on offense and learn smash moth ball in the red zone and stop this cute sissy stuff of constantly trying to get a good mismatch. Let your front play and if they can’t run block get some players that can. This will help Kolb and if you think he’s the answer….HELP HIM.
