Defense Shines Again, While Offense Struggles Again

It was ugly preseason football game with mistakes by both sides along with plenty of turnovers and near-turnovers.  The Eagles played on the level of the Kansas City Chiefs who are one of the doormats of the NFL.  It surely wasn’t what we would have wanted to see in the final dress rehearsal for the starters before the first regular season game against the Green Bay Packers.

The game was a continuation of what we had seen at training camp.  The defense was outstanding for the most part, while the offense could only put together a long touchdown scoring drive at the very end of the game with rookie quarterback Mike Kafka in there and the Chiefs third-string defense on the field.

The offense isn’t clicking on all cylinders.  The timing seems to be off and too many times Kolb is under pressure and misfiring or one of the receivers is failing to make the catch.

The Chiefs defense which is nothing to write home about, was able to put pressure on Kolb and keep the Eagles off balance.

I could see that both Andy Reid and Marty Morhhinweg are concerned and they have reason to be.   This offense doesn’t have much to show from this entire preseason.  They scored one touchdown in six quarters of action and that was after the Chiefs gave them the ball on their own 20-yard line.

They can put a happy face on it all they want, but this team isn’t ready for prime time as of yet. the offense continues to make mistakes on every other play.  On one play it’s the line, on the next play it’s Kolb and on the next play it’s one of the receivers. The running game has looked better than the passing game and that’s not saying much.

They had 14 yards passing in the first half against the Kansas City Chiefs in a game in which they game-planned and prepared for.

The scoring in the game started with running back LeSean McCoy taking off on an 18-yard touchdown run.  It was a well blocked play right up the gut.  Todd Herremans, Leonard Weaver and center Mike McGlynn all made good blocks at the point of attack.  Stacy Andrews was overpowered on the backside but McCoy was gone by the time the linebacker threw Andrews off of him.

Wide receiver Jason Avant, who was in there for DeSean Jackson, did a great job of blocking downfield and was the main reason it went all the way for a score.  McCoy exhibited good vision and cutting skills as he ran to daylight on the score.

Mike Bell was unimpressive in his first action.  He ran the ball hard and gave good effort but he didn’t get much done while he was in there.

On the defensive side, the defense is playing well and the rookies are improving.

Rookie safety Nate Allen had another outstanding game.  He put pressure on Matt Cassell on a blitz on third to force an imcompletion.  On another third down he ran down the running back after he caught the ball on a screen pass.

He was active on run and pass plays.  I like the way he attacks the line of scrimmage on running plays, but isn’t caught out of position on pass plays with run fakes.  He seems to read plays very well.

Rookie Brandon Graham was all over the place and constantly he was putting licks on Cassell when he threw the football.  Sean McDermott hasn’t had to blitz very often because the pass rush pressure has been there with the four-man rush.   Graham is active against the pass and run.

When they took him out, Darryl Tapp went in and didn’t miss a beat.  He got a sack and kept the pressure on the Chiefs quarterbacks.

New outside linebacker Ernie Sims was active in the contest against the Chiefs.  He made some good play on a number of run plays and almost had an interception near the goalline.  Sims was covering a back and had him blanketed, when Cassell’s pass hit him.

Does Moise Fokou know the rules of the game?  I saw him hit the punt returner out of bounds.  It was an aggressive move but a stupid decision which should have been a penalty, which reminds me of this horrible team of referees.   They couldn’t referree a good high school game, much less a pro game.

Asante Samuel put a lick on rookie Dexter McCluster in the second quarter, which had the running back’s cleats sailing over his head.  Samuel caught McCluster before he could turn around after catching the football.

A few plays later, Samuel was out of position when Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe caught a five-yard touchdown pass.

He was in position for an interception but Bowe grabbed him,but the blind group of referrees missed the call.

Rookie cornerback Trevard Lindley was in there on a nickel play early in the game and grabbed an interception on a deflected pass.  Lindley has outstanding potential and could wind up on the field a great deal as the season goes along.

Lindley was pass interfering on that play but it wasn’t called.  I’ve noticed that he continues to push receivers after they’ve gone five-yards downfield.  It’s going to be called during the season, so the coaching staff had better correct him.

The Eagles seem to be considering playing Lindley over Ellis Hobbs and I could understand why.  Lindley has been size and one-on-one coverage skills than Hobbs. but he’s still learning the complexities of the coverages.  He definitely has a huge upside because he can go toe-to-toe with the big receivers the Birds will be facing in the division.

Lindley is not only the tallest cornerback the Birds have, he’s also has long arms with outstanding leaping ability.

He’s physical and loves to move up on a receiver in press technique and jam him before he releases.  The press technique is what the Birds like their corners to jump into when they’re in a blitz.

Expect to see a lot of Lindley as the year goes on and don’t be surprised if he’s starting before too long.

It seemed that the Eagles and Channel six were more interested in getting their messages out than covering the game.  Exciting plays were happening while Channel six was talking about something that none of us cared about.

Why should they be showing the guys in the booth while the game is going on?  I don’t want to see the guys in the booth when they’re playing the game.

Michael Vick converted three third down plays into first downs.  Reid seems to be intent on putting the ball in his hands on short yardage and goalline situations.

He made a nice throw to Jason Avant to set up a third and short.  Bell wasn’t able to pick up the first down on the third and one try.  Weaver picked up the first down on fourth down.

Weaver fell on the ball at the end of that carry and it knocked the wind out of him.

Should we just pencil in two motion penalties on left tackle Jason Peters?  I’m thinking we should get it done on the first two plays of the game and that way we won’t have to worry about it earlier.

They’re going to have to do one of those hand-holding situations with Herremans.  They could have Herremans and Peters hold hands, so that Peters knows the ball has been snapped when Herremans lets go of his hand.

Punt returner, wide receiver and Mr. Do-It-All,  Chad Hall is trying hard but he doens’t have the speed needed and just can’t get the job done.  I think the reincarnation of Reno Mahe is still appropiate.

The Eagles offense looked it’s best when rookie Mike Kafka was in there with the third team.  He took the team the length of the field in a two-minute drill that allowed the Birds to win the game.  The offensive line blocked well during that stretch and everybody was on top of their assignments.

I don’t know if it was the effectiveness of the Eagles third-team or the ineffectiveness of the Chiefs third-string defense.  Whatever the answer, it’s no reason for the Eagles to celebrate.

Kafka connected with Riley Cooper on an 18 yard touchdown pass to win the game for the Birds.  He did a nice job of taking what the Chiefs defense game him.  The rookie also did a good job of getting the Birds offense in and out of the huddle, which allowed them to utilize all the time they had on the clock.

It doesn’t say much for your offense, when you can’t play mistake-free football until your third-team guys are on the field.  Unfortunately quite a few of the guys on the field at that time, won’t make the football team.

It’s got to get better than this, or should I say, it should get better than this.

Good info as always G. Yeah it was a terrible night for the 1st team offense. If the 3rd preseason game is any indication of how this team is supposed to play in the reg season then we’re in for a long year.

I don’t always blame it on the players though. I need the coaches to do a better job. After all its them that are supposed to have this team prepared and ready to go.

This is only the beginning…..I said it before ..get your paperbags ready…Our Eagles single handedly help build the NFC east rivals by letting a top cover linebacker as well as D coach go to the giants (superbowl winners), giving Cowboys our 1st rounder and later grabbing Kolb in the 2nd round, and trading our franchise QB to the Redskins. The NFL personally thank the Eagles for helping bring the NFC East into it’s old form….The rivalries that could win Superbowls in the NFC is back…. and guess who will be in the basement once again..spinning reasons for obsurity? our “GOLDEN STANDARD”

Easy Songs,
The NFC East is problably the 3rd best Division in the NFC…
The NFC South with Saints,Falcons,PaAnthers,Bucs fom top to bottom are a better division
The NFC North with Packers,Vikings,Bears and improved Lions are also better

The Cowboys probably finish 11/12 wins while the Giants about 9 and Eagles/Redksins may be fortunate to win 6/7/8 at most…

Great post songs…..and you wont hear any criticism of this coach or FO in the media…and you will get killed by the FO Falacio groupies on here. Dont forget Banner said we had the best roster in the NFL and then on the off season we got rid of 2 thirds of them. Not one ounce of criticism. If it was NY Banner would be given an apple and a road map. If you and I made such bold statements on our job , and then it blew up we would be on the streets. As longs they sell a bunch of the kelly green throw backs The holly wood punk and the FO will be happy.

I didn’t see the game G,
How was the play of the DT’s and LB Jordan..( I know the Chiefs don’t utilize their TE’s much) but once the regular season opens versus the Packers & Lions out of the gate, both those teams will thorw to their TE’s quite a bit and this has been a problem with the Eagles D for a coupld of years now…
Also, does the fact that Macho Harris was playing Safety mean the end for Q Demps (I believe it does) I think the Safety Position will end up having Mickell,Allen, Colemane and M Harris
The Eagles like Harris but there is no way he makes it at CB, so if he makes it as the 3rd/4th Safety
and Demps gets released, then who returns Kick-Offs (Hobbs..or someone else)

Paulman, STFU. So tired of hearing about you and Carolina. You have a warped sense of reality and confidence in the Panthers and all Carolina teams. The NFC south isn’t even close to the east. They’ve got the Saints and a pretty good Falcons team. THAT’S IT. Panthers suck. You’re like a 6 year old whos dad is a crack head but still thinks he’s the greatest guy who ever lived. You’re retarded.

To “Leave it to Boyer”

NFC South- Saints and Falcons will be better than the top 2 teams in the NFC East
NFC North – Packers and Vikings will better than the top 2 teams in the NFC East

The Panthers will struggle and probably win about 7-8 games which is what I am forecasting for the
Giants/Redskins/Eagles to win. If you read my post, I stated that from top to bottom the NFC South and North Divisions are better than the NFC East.. (probably most NFL Pundits/Analysts would also agree) but only in the northeast do the media and fans continue to think that the NFC East is the best in football and it’s clearly not true and hasn’t been for the last few years…
The AFC North with Ravens,Steelers,Bengals is the best division in the NFL
The AFC East with the Patriots,Jets and the improved Dolphins are probably better too.
The AFC South with Colts,Texans,Titans,Jags are about the same as the NFC East..

I have hardly posted anything about he Panthers this year for their is not much to report on,
They, like the Eagles got rid of a lot of solid Veteran Players and have a very young Roster..
Gone from their roster are the following starters from last years 8-8 team QB Delhomme,WR Mohammed,RG J Vinecent , FB B Hoover and on Defense DE J Peppers,DT Komeauto, DT D Lewis,DT H Thoams, and Safety C Harris
They still have a good running game with a solid O/Line and RB’s, but no WR’s outside of Steve Smith, average TE’s and very young D/Line with 4-5 new players. Their Secondary is decent and LB are probably their strength with All-Pro J Beason as their leader.. But they will not score more than
17-20 points a game which won’t win you many games in the NFL..

Ozzman, I can’t believe anyone is still harping on that Joe Banner comment. It was a dumb thing to say for sure, but it was about as significant as a salesman saying, ‘we have the best product you can find anywhere’, ‘best burger’, world famous ‘_____’, ‘We’ll beat anyone’s price and quality’, ‘only the best’….etc… in this modern american culture, we hear that crap from anyone and any buisness who’s job it is to sell a product. And we are all real good at completely ignoring it and dismissing it as utter B.S. Yet you, Songs, and many others, find it incredibly significant and suggest that Banner was being objective and serious…..Media – “Hello Mr. CEO, how is your company’s product these days” – CEO “enh, it’s pretty good, others are better….” – NO that’s not how it works. Get a frickin life. I’m not drinking any coolaid or loving everything about the team, I’m just being practical about Banner. Our O Line has huge problems. Our offense is still quite a work in progress. Reid makes a bunch of errors and so do the other coaches (wow, how unique), but expecting Joe Banner to say anything but that his product (toung in cheek) is the ‘gold standard’ is pretty ridiculous. Oh, and I think Mike Vick plays terrible at the quarterback position often. I think Stacey Andrews and Winston Justice are big conerns. Ozzman, NY would not fire a team president that delivered a steady growth of income, a consistent consumer base, a consistent winning franchise etc…. you are precisely incorrect there sir. You may be dissapointed and/or angry at the FO, but saying that they’d be fired elsewhere is flat out wrong.

I’m not ‘preforming any sexual acts’ toward anybody associated with the Eagles in the least bit. I’m merely pointing at the gaping holes in your argument. I don’t like Joe Banner, Jeff Lurie, or Howie Roseman. I think they do a lot of things pretty well though. I do like Reid, but I’m by no means head over heals over many of the things he does as a coach. I also flat out am not a Marty fan. Are you able to see that while I say your argument is bunk, that doesn’t mean I love the FO? Can you understand that? Or are you to juvenille? No disrespect at all, I’m asking because I’m curious.

I do agree with Schiller about too many fans harping on what the Lurie/Banner says about their teams.. What do you expect them to say, “this year we are going to be mediocre and hope for the best”… Banner is the money man and not a football guy, so why take anything he says about the perfomance of the team with any seriousness or depth..It’s ridiculous ….

In all, the D looked really good. One thing I did notice is that our D is smallish compared to most and if our O can’t sustain long drives via the run game, our D will wear out quickly, especially in the “Run Happy” NFC East.

Before too much praise on Eagles Defense for last evening Game
One big stat to me that is allarming is that they gave up 168 rushing yards on the ground for an almost 5 yard a carry average versus a team that is supposed to have an average and young O/Line and only so-so RB’s.. Lots teams will be watching this footage and expect a lot of rushing right at this smallish
Defensive team ..

Hey Schill- Firs of all I will ignore your personal insults as you seem to be the only one that comes on here attacks the posters instead just making a comment. BTW I never used your name for the FO Felacio Groupies…. but you denied being one. Listen Tom Coughlin is on the hot seat and if the Giants dont go deep in the playoffs he is fired and its no secret. They just won a Super Bowl 3 years ago against an undefeated team. NY also fired a manager who won 4 WS after being knocked out in playoffs in the first round 3 years in a row. So to say they wouldn’t fire Banner for saying that is not realistic. I just want a Super Bowl and I am tired of losing. THis front office keeps blowing smoke my ass and they insult my intelligence. ( I know Schill i have none , only you do) This coach makes the same mistakes every year and nothing is done about it. Anyone notice Kolb looks lost? Not accetable when you replace the best QB in the franchises history.

Dont get me wrong, I hope i am wrong and they are right. I hope they win the Super Bowl and I eat crow but the problem is this team makes the same mistakes, is too pass happy, predictable and soft. Its not 5’s fault, not kolb’s fault its Andy’s fault. He never gets any blame and just doesn’t get his philosophy doesn’t work. Even back in the 90’s when the boys used beat us in the playoffs and other years when were any good the one one thing we were was physical. No one pushed us around and we punished teams. My biggest sadness with this team is MY Eagles are soft. It heartbreaking and the problem is the longer Reid is here the longer it will take for us to get back to Eagles football.

That’s a real Eagles fan that will settle for nothing but the best product on the field..We don’t want cheap experiments or value at any position. We want the best! Warriors like Dawk, beasts like Trotter and Hugh was, Toughness like Mcnabb….corners that hit hard like Sheldon Brown..Game changers like Brian Westbrook / Desean Jackson..Nasty line play like Big John Runyan…We need an owner that will never let top talent get away by haggling over a dollar…..give us a “Jerry Jones”,and a coach who knows what to do with such talent and represents the true nature of Philadelphia Fans and is willing to get in someones face…like Bill Cowher.

schiller

August 29, 2010 6:43 pm

I think Kolb looks like a typical young QB who shows a lot of potential, poise and ability. I think he is not fully matured yet as a QB, but much farther along than many first time starters. I think he knows the offense well, has shown he can learn from mistakes and make better decisions. I think he will progress very well this year, but have some interceptions and bad games (I do think we can weather them and still make the playoffs due to my belief in McCoy, Weaver, the run blocking and more importantly the defense). I think he is not particularly athletic or strong armed – but I think he can make all the throws – including deep passes. I am confident he can progress into a top 15 QB in the next few years if the Oline plays well enough. I’m hoping they draft rounds 1,2, and 3 OL next year.
