Kevin Kolb Struggled, But His Teammates Didn’t Give Him Much Help

This is a game which Kevin Kolb would just as soon forget, but he’d better not forget it because he’s need to learn from it.  Losing DeSean Jackson after the first play of the game, changed the offense which limited what the Birds were able to do the rest of the way.

Kolb played poorly but he wasn’t alone.  Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters had a couple of motion penalties which are becoming as consistent as the Eagles team colors.

One of the biggest disappointment in the game was the play of Jeremy Maclin.  Maclin needed to step up and be the go-to-guy for Kolb once Jackson went down, but instead of stepping up, he fell apart.  The second-year Pro did get interfered with on a pass route in the end zone, but he dropped a number of passes, the most costly of which would have been a fifty-yard gain and put the Eagles in position to score.

Kolb was 11 of 25 for 103 yards and one interception but it could have been much worse.  Kolb threw two other passes which should have been picked off.  The blitzing pressure from the Chiefs seemed to frustrate Kolb.

On one of the Eagles blitzes which Kolb got sacked by number 53 Demorrio Williams.  Fullback Leonard Weaver was in a one-back formation and lined up to Kolb’s right.  Weaver released on what looked like a hot route and Kolb failed to recognize the blitz.  The fullback was open in the flat but the young quarterback didn’t see him.  It was a first down play, which lets you know that the Chiefs were expecting the Eagles to throw the football.

On a first and ten in the first quarter, the Eagles ran a bootleg play, where Kolb faked a handoff to McCoy and rolled to his right looking for Jeremy Maclin on the sideline.  He threw the pass late, and Chiefs rookie safety Berry knocked the ball down with two hands, instead of picking it off and running it in for a score.

It was the worst decision Kolb made in the game because it should have been an interception for a touchdown if Berry had simply put his hands out to catch the ball, rather than knock it down.  One of the rules of quarterbacking is that you can’t throw out routes late.  You either throw it early, or on time but you never throw it late.  If you must throw it late, you don’t throw it at all.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg gave Kolb a talking to when he came to the sideline after that one.  He wasn’t smiling when he was talking.

Kolb did a good job on a third down in the first quarter when he escaped a near sack and ran for the first down near the red zone.  He also put a ball up to Maclin who was interfered with in the end zone but the blind referees didn’t make the call.

Kolb could have taken a split second longer to throw a screen pass to McCoy in the red zone.  The play was wide open and might have been a touchdown.  Holding could have been called on a Chiefs defensive lineman who grabbed McCoy and delayed his release.

In the second quarter, Kolb put one up to Maclin who was running a go route and it was a perfect throw.  Maclin had beaten Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr and all he had to do was catch the football, but he let it go right through his hands.  Kolb couldn’t have handed the ball to him any better.

Kolb had pressure in his face and missed Avant with a throw in the dirt.  On the next play he was sacked and was unable to see a couple of receivers downfield, who were supposedly open.  He seemed hurried and uncomfortable in the pocket.

The youngster is going to have to learn to calm himself down in the pocket after a play in which the pass rush pressure gets to him.  He seems to get “happy feet” or wants to get out of the pocket after somebody gets to him with a hit.

The third quarter started with a drop by Maclin.  Kolb did a good job on the next play of coming off of Brent Celek who was covered and going to Jason Avant for a first down. He hit Avant again on an eight-yard gain.

When the Eagles got the ball the next time, Kolb was sacked on another blitz which the line didn’t pick up and he didn’t read.  He was then forced to throw the ball away on the next play when they forced him to roll to his left.

On the next series he threw the ball to one of the Kansas City linebackers but he dropped the ball.  He was trying to hit Avant on a crossing route.  On the next play he was pressured out of the pocket and he let it go deep to Maclin but the Chiefs safety came over and picked it off.

This is the kind of mistake which he can’t make.  It was a desperation throw and he’s got to learn to throw the ball away in low scoring games, especially when the defense is playing so well.  Punting the ball isn’t a problem.  He’s got to be patient in those situations.

On the next possession, Kolb was able to connect with Celek with a nice throw downfield on a corner route as the Eagles flooded the right side with three receivers.   He then got the ball to Mike Bell on a wide route.

He and Maclin finally connected on an intermediate route on a good read by Kolb.  The drive ended with Kolb throwing the ball away as he scrambled to his left.  It was a good decision by Kolb on third down because nobody was open and it allowed the Eagles to put three points on the board.

It’s a work in progress. Kolb and this offense must stay focused on getting better.  It’s still very early, so there’s no reason for them to get discouraged.

I wanna see Kolb start and play a least a quarter and a half in the 4th and final preseason game. He needs the reps. He’s making some bad decisions out there. Now I know the o line sucks right now but he’s been lucky enough to have gotten away with about 5-6 dropped interceptions so far this preseason.

He’s got to step his game up after all we’re in the NFC Beast and we have Green Bay week 1.

Jackson is a vital part of the offense but he is small and prone to injury. Who is going to return punts
this season. Surely not Maklin. He is a disaster returing punts and kickoffs. Chad Hall is another Reno Mahe. Chief are not superbowl bound, so how can youy say defense shined.Did you see Banner’s shirt.
He looked like a farmer and was shorter that that female interviewer. Peters is good for two penalities a game. Maklin looks like he has no chest. Whats up with that. One of the Chiefs offensive players juked Cole into an ankle sprain.

Dont be fooled..We in the midst of an all out QB controversy..You dont start Vick on the second play of the first offensive series and tell me any different..Thats bullshit..Whats Kolb supposed to think? It messses with your head..I was a QB in high school and in the Marine Corps and thats just wrong to do to a guy. How can you get into any kind of a groove getting pulled out of the game for Vick to come in and run gadget plays? Did Elway, Marino, Brady, montana, Moon or Aaron Rodgers have to deal with that?..Can you imagine Peyton putting up with that? It’s a joke!! Eagles, decide who your QB is and stick with it cause this carnival your running isn’t going anywhere.

Everybody finds every excuse for Klob, Eagles will suck big time this year. Can he see more than one receiver?? Sure the line is bad, they where bad last year also. But a 39 rating, come on, he sucks.

I been saying for the longest time on these post is that we NEED to trade Jeremy Maclin while his stock is high for a 1st round pick and retool this offensive line and secondary with 2 first round picks. We have Jason Avant to me is the 2nd best WR on this team and Riley Cooper is the real deal along with Jackson.

I dont know why people are hating on Chad Hall.. He is no Reno Mahe. Reno Mahe was fumbling and missing catches while chad hall makes good decsions. We dont need a Dynamic returner we just need someone to take what the defense (special teams) gives us and take care of the ball and thats what i been seeing from chad hall. I guess we rather keep demps that chad hall? cmon.

Jimmy, on the Vick and Kolb thing, let’s see what they do in the regular season w/ game planning etc…. I know I sound like a broken record, along with many people at this time of the year, but seriously, you’re interpreting preseason playcalling…. I hear you on the ego thing, but Kolb has to be able to handle that. As for Maclin – you really want to trade our second fastest reciever who had one bad preseason game after a strong rookie campaign? Our second best (outside) reciever on a team where the #1 guy is small and injury prone? Talks of trading him is brash overreaction.

I did not see this game (which was a probably a good thing) but followed it on Eagles.com and I think it’s very evident that this Eagles Offense will be a work in progress and especially the first few games until they get thier O/Line straightened out…but a few things are pretty obvious since the beginning of camp and thru the 1st 3 Preseason games.

#1) RG S Andrews is not playing at a level you expect from a Starting Guard and at his Salary, he has to be considered a flat out bust and should be released.
#2) This WR Corps was way Over-Rated by many of the local media and Eagle fans… (D-Jax is the real deal for sure, but Maclin plays scared, Avant is reliable but is not going to run away from any defenses, R Cooper is a Rookie with great potential and Washignton/Baskett are basically #4/#5 WR which is what they have been during their careers so to expect any more from them is unrealistic)
#3) FB L Weaver is also under utilized on a team that doesn’t utilize his abilities and talents enough.. Why they paid him a record deal for a FB and not utilize him enough is beyond me
#4) The back-up RB position is still unsettled, with M Bell hurt and missing so much time, why hasn’t draft pick C Scott been given the opportunity to show if he’s NFL ready or not
he’s going to end up as a wasted draft pick
#5) Back-Up TE – It looks like Harbor played well, but is he an NFL Caliber TE for 2010..Ingram is a lost cause most likely and will probably end up on IR for 2010, so Eagles need a veteran blocking TE to help spell Celek from time to time
#6) Kolb has had to scramble away from pressure on half of the pass plays so far in Pre-Season,that
he is getting into the bad habit or rolling out when it’s not neccessary and being late on his throws instead of staeeping in and up in the pocket to deliver a strike. It’s part of his learning process, but the play of this O/Line has been average to poor all Pre-season so far and the play-calling has been it’s typical puzzling self..

This offense in its present form will struggle to put 17 points a game against very active and stronger defenses that they will face come the Regular Season and unless you can score about 24-26 points a game in todays NFL, you will not win many games.. With no real rushing attack or even the threat of a rushing attack, the Eagles will have their smallish Defense on field 55%-60% of the time and the usual wear-down and leg heavy Defense will rear it’s ugly head during the final push of the Season.. a Disappointing performance and now the games will only get tougher and tougher

I’m hoping the tape isn’t out on Kolb already. It’s a bit early to tell, but when a young QB comes in for a couple of games and plays well, the defense coordinators usually pick up on it and make adjustments, e.g. Matt Ryan, Matt Cassel, David Garrard. The fact that we know that Kolb is more comfortable rolling out to his right is only a small tidbit for the DCs that study numerous intricacies of Mr. Kolb. I’m hoping and praying that he is the answer, but I must say that the more I look at the overall situation, the more I see the same issues. SSDQ (Same Shish Different Quarterback), with a much improved QB may I add. Kudos to FO for identifying our glaring needs on D and addressing them. I think we’ll be okay, Kolb will have to take care of the ball though, Keep 5 is absolutely right, Kolb has thrown at least 6 should be interceptions in a little under 6 quarters of play.

Any good D/C will game plan with the following schemes when facing the Eagles Offense,
Load up heavy on left-side of the Defensive Line (opposite of RT W Justice) with the DE/LB rushing wider than normal to force Kolb to step up or move to his left. If that roll-out to the right is taken away from Kolb, he and theEagle Offense are going to struggle big tie for it appears to be Kolb’s bread and butter play-reaction so far instead of sliding up in th epocekt and being able to keep your eyes on the entire field of play, when you roll out all the time, you only have good vision of half the field and DC can shift their coverages to that side of the field making it tough to find open receivers and open field..

Prediction everyone will be blasting the Eagles for getting rid of McNabb by week 5….. Kolb will have more INTs then TDs. He doesnt know how to get rid of the ball yet especially in the redzone he forces to many passes down there it hasnt bit him in the ass yet but it will if he keeps throwing into double and triple coverage. The Defense will be playing good but the INTs give the other teams to good of field postion. Ive already prepared myself for a down year just hope that when Kolb does get pulled they dont play Vick aka the worst NFL QB in the league.

Kolb’s lack of arm strength is scary. How about when he tried to throw that ‘out’ pattern to Maclin!? That is six points going the other way 9 out of 10 times. They stopped throwing intermediate routes after a few series. Was that planned?

It appears that Kolb throws into coverage an awful lot. It’s been said that he’s a “gunslinger.” The only problem is that “gunslingers” throw a lot of picks and without Reggie White, they don’t win superbowls.

It’s also been reported, repeatedly, that Kolb’s “quick release” and “accuracy” would lead to a significant increase in yards after catch. I haven’t seen any evidence of that. Perhaps that only occurs when the Eagles game plan.

Even if you go back and view Superbowl XXXIX, you’ll see that McNabb had absolutely no time (from the very first play). When McNabb had the sports hernia, he got no protection, but Reid continued to call pass after pass. I believe Reid’s system is flawed because of its predictability.

The Eagles will win some games, but when they have to play the good teams, they’re are likely to fail, as usual. I hope Kolb doesn’t have to take the blame, they way McNabb had to take it.

When playing against aggressive Defenses and experienced D/Coordinators who know the Eagles are not committing to running the ball (at least they haven’t the last 10 years under AR & MM)
It’s not too difficult to devise a defensice game plan where on 60% of the snaps, the Eagles are going to run passing plays which can really help you dial up the pressure and blitzes.
With McNabb at the helb (when he was younger and could effective run for yardage) teams & DC had to account for him getting outside the pocket and would place a “spy” at the line of scrimmage to go wherever McNabb went (usually a LB), With Kolb, it’s a different storpy and the teams are going to rush right up the gut with the weakness being the interior of the Eagle O/Line and also be rushing/blitzing from the right side (over RT Justice) to prevent the roll-outs to the right…
After watching football for over 35 years now, there is only 2 ways to buy a QB more time in the pocket
#1) Have better blockers to begin with
#2) Rrun the ball early and often enough so the DL cannot just pin their ears back..Run some draw plays and screens to keep the opposing teams off-balance. The Eagles just don’t do this enough for Defenses to be concerned about it and the Defenses/DC’s will take their chances (which are in their favor) that the Eagles will call a pass play and go get to the QB…

It seems that Kolb has happy feet and is abandoning the pocket already.

McNabb suffered a myriad of injuries before he developed happy feet. It took years before he got nervous; not even after throwing 3 TDs on a broken ankle.

It seems that McNabb could never do enough and was expected to overcome any and all obstacles. Is that same standard being held to Kolb? How many years did we lead the league in dropped passes? Now, dropped passes are a “big problem.”

For years, McNabb played with the worst receivers. In fact, some were more like linemen, because they couldn’t even get off the line of scrimmage against press coverage. However, McNabb was expected to somehow throw completions to those guys.

The deck was always stacked, except when he had T.O. During their first season, McNabb broke all kinds of records (including the TD-to-Int record) and the Eagles went to the Superbowl. So, what did the front office do when T.O. flipped out? They replaced him with those well-known pro-bowlers Greg Lewis, Hank Baskett and the like.

Drummer,
Can you put the Violin away for Mcnabb already,
It’s old news, old hat and doesn’t mean a damn thing for this 2010 team moving forward..
maybe a change in some of the personnel up front is needed, maybe a bigger committment to run the ball is needed, maybe some players just need to step up and play better and the coaches need some better play calling.. Let’s concentrate on this insetead of re-hashing the why or why not’s of teams failures and players from the past for in 2010, it really doesn’t matter …

The problem is what Talongrip stated on the other post. Reid and his smallish type players, redzone problems, so-so, so-so coaching, indecisiveness, etc, yada yada yada…hell it’s the same old thing. 11 years of this crap and i’m getting tired. The biggest problem with the offense that only a few people will admit to and we can do nothing about is getting rid of McNabb. I hit submit by mistake, Sorry

In continuing… APPEARS (so far through preseason QB play) to be the problem which Reid will never admit was his biggest mistake, was letting 5 go. Near interceptions and putting your playmakers in dangerous crossing route situations etc will only serve to get them injured and give opposing defenses more momentum. Look gang, I know 5 is on a different team and I’m with whoever’s here but I’m just making it a point to say that I believe Reid made a serious mistake in releasing 5. I can’t control who’s here and who’s not here but to finally have wide receivers who’ve developed rapport on the field with your probowl qb after years of giving him no weapons, then trade him and give the keys to someone with no real experience to run your team is ludicrous in my opinion. Djax loves going deep and catching the deep ball. The jury is still out on maclin who seems kind of soft as if he doesn’t like contact. Avant is a tough as nails player who carries the team on his back when we need him. Cooper seems to be the next one to step up and I think he’s going to be good. We all know what Celek can do. IMO, it doesn’t seem that Kolb has developed on the field rapport and really tailored his game towards the strengths and weaknesses of his receivers. But, Hell its Reids team who am I to tell him that small players who wear down quickly and not Road Graders (on offense and defense)are the answer to winning a superbowl. I’m just tired of the same ol same ol. I believe Kafka may be the sleeper if Kolb continues on this path and Vick doesn’t pan out to be as good as I still believe he is (they just won’t give him enough playing time which is really limiting his game). Hell; fire Reid and Morningweg and try to hire a nasty coach like Cowher, and let him have full control over the offense and defense, and let him draft some bad boys with nasty attitudes. Thats what we need around here. Not players who seem to be nice to the coach and vice versa and FO etc. This is some crap… Damn.

Mcnabb was the scapegoat for a pathetic organization that threw their franchise QB under the bus after he almost single handedly gave credibility to what was once a laughingstock in the NFL. The greatest decision Reid ever made was drafting Mcnabb and now the dumbest decision will be him deciding to throw him under the pattison orange line…This year will tell us everything we need to know about this organization….”GET YOUR POPCORN READY”….5-11..ALL 5 will be squeekers.

Told you…..Remember life before Mcnabb? If you don’t you’ll soon have a serious reminder.

Mcnabb masked Reid’s deficencies as a play caller and when plays broke down he was able to turn a bad play into a big play. That element is gone and we can all see what happens without a playmaker with a strong arm that knows how to improvise. If this was Walsh or Holmgren with this team I would’nt be as nervous but it’s stubborn Reid who don’t know how important it is to have a running game as a legitimate threat. At first I wanted them to call up Jeff Garcia but no more..No more masking to give us hope in winning a few games yet fall short of the goal…We need to see if Kolb and Reid can be contenders and if not ship them both out and get Cower in here and bring a legitimate running game with smash mouth football back to philly with a ferosious .defense. No more ballet dancers on the offensive line. HARD HAT SMASH MOUTH MANO ON MANO FOOTBALL! We need it bad

JMac, I’m in agreement with you about trading Maclin. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the least of our worries. He’s going to be okay, he’s proven. Our OL will give us a better picture once Jamal Jackson is at the center and coverages will ease up a bit once DJax is spreading the field for Maclin.

The whole notion that FO, Howard Eskin and crew used to preach to us about not needing a #1 receiver was completely debunked last night.

I think a lot of people were too hard on McNabb b/c they were expecting the accuracies of a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, the durability of a Brett Favre and the mobility of a Michael Vick all rolled in one. You can’t have everything, and besides this is pretty much the same line that McNabb played behind, he masked a lot of their flaws. What FO should have done, was identify McNabb’s strengths and surround him with the type of weapons he needed in order to bring home a Super Bowl. We probably would have had a couple by now. If my QB is not the most accurate passer, by God, I’m going to go out and get him bigger targets with wider range e.i. a Larry Fitzgerald or a Plaxico Burress, receivers you don’t necessarily have to be surgeon accurate with. Instead, we kept bringing in these 5’10 175lbs receiver that were not able to make adjustments to the ball and take poorly thrown balls away from DBs. IMO last year, QB was the least of our worries, we had a pro bowl caliber QB and I know the big picture was to get someone else groomed for the future, but I don’t know if it was time for that. If your argument is that we got a high second rd pic in Nate Allen for him, I will rebut it with the pic we wasted on getting Kolb three years ago around the same exact place in the draft could have been used to bring in a superior playmaker or traded away for one.

I know it’s preseason, and we can’t get an accurate depiction yet, but I will tell you that there isn’t a coincidence that we are seeing a lot of the same issues without “5” in the drivers seat.

I’m just venting right now, as a huge McNabb supporter in the past, I’m pulling for Kolb now, b/c I put team before any player, but I’m truly shaking my head in disgust, not b/c of Kolb’s struggles, but b/c the FO thinks they’ve been outsmarting the rest of the league for the last 11 or 12 years. Jokes on us, the fans!!!

In closing, I want everyone to evaluate the play calling by MM or Reid whom I truly like as a head coach, but his on the fly decision making and halftime adjustments may be the worst. After taking a look at last years games, I’ve noticed a glaring stat, if we did not possess the lead at halftime, we lost the game every single time. I don’t know who to attribute this too MM or AR, but this is a true gauge for identifying whether you are being out coached.

Completely of subject, but is just me, or does Jason Peters look like “Sugar Bear” from the cereal box?

I think “Songs” looks like McNabb’s Mom too, from the Chunky Soup commercials…

Joe Banner looks like revenge of the nerds. All he needs is tape on his glasses and a pencil protector.

Outstanding points Drummer… Mcnabb covered AR butt for years, his stubborness and lack of a new offense will get Kolb killed. The Packers defense will pin their ears back and stubborn AR will put on his rose colored glasses and keep passing the ball. Meanwhile Kevin “HappyFeet” Kolb is running around trying not to get hit in the mouth for the umpteenth time.
