A Closer Look At The Eagles 53-Man Roster

Less than a second after I reviewed the Philadelphia Eagles 53 man roster, I said to my self, “They can’t be finished!!”

Now that the 6pm deadline has passed, Howie Roseman and Andy Reid are probably discussing their next moves as I type.

Here’s a look at each position group.

Quarterback

The Eagles quarterback lineup was finalized when they drafted Mike Kafka in the 4th round this past April.  Kevin Kolb replaced Donovan McNabb as the starter.  Michael Vick will finish his contract as a backup before moving on.  Kafka’s rookie year will be as the No. 3 QB and he’ll move up to Kolb’s backup afterwards.

Running Back

This was another predictable lineup.  Like Kolb, LeSean McCoy will replace a former stud (Brian Westbrook) as the starter.  Let’s hope Mike Bell can stay healthy and be a change of pace inside runner.  Eldra Buckley will be the third back again.  Barring injury, he’ll primarily play on special teams.

I thought J.J. Arrington had a small chance after his kickoff returns in the preseason finale.  The fact that the Eagles ensured they’d receive a 2012 draft pick made it easy to waive him.

Leonard Weaver should have another Pro Bowl season at fullback.

Wide Receiver

Never before has there been so much speculation/discussion about who the 5th wide receiver would be.  DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, and Jason Avant never had to worry about their spots.  This top-3 tandem is very solid.

Riley Cooper has been tremendous this preseason and the rookies only going to get better. I hope they’re practicing fade passes to him.

I thought Kelly Washington deserved to get the last WR slot. Hank Baskett has already established a relationship with the Eagles’ coaching staff so he got the nod.

Tight End

I don’t think the Eagles are finished here.  Remember last season when starter Brent Celek hurt his shoulder?  Alex Smith was the backup and the Eagles had to promote Martin Rucker from the practice squad.

Because of that, the Eagles need three tight ends on the roster.  One of those guys should excel at blocking. Celek is the starter, of course.  Rookie Clay Harbor earned his way to being the backup.

Cornelius Ingram has had a difficult time staying healthy and was released.  Don’t be surprised if he’s signed to the practice squad.  Another player to keep an eye on is Chase Coffman, who was released by the Bengals.  The 2009 3rd rounder would be a steal if his left ankle is healthy.

Offensive Line

Although only for a 2011 7th round pick, trading Stacy Andrews was the best news of the day.  I must admit, I thought he was going to play right tackle when they signed him.  He’ll have his chance to play his preferred position for Pete Carroll.

Jason Peters must cut down his mental errors as the starting left tackle.  I hope Todd Herremans and Jamaal Jackson can both stay healthy as the starting left guard and center.  Nick Cole is the starting right guard for now.  At right tackle is Winston Justice.  As long as his name isn’t mentioned, I’m happy.

The Eagles kept four (soon to be five) reserves as expected.  Austin Howard is the one undrafted rookie to make it.  Recently acquired Reggie Wells should be starting soon.  He just has to get acclimated to the system. Keeping Mike McGlynn was a no-brainer.  He may be the most versatile lineman.  I didn’t think King Dunlap would make the team, but he’s here.  Max Jean-Gilles is expected to resign tomorrow.

Defensive End

Trent Cole and rookie Brandon Graham are going to form one heck of a tandem.  Jaqua Parker should be able to keep his legs fresh rotating with Graham.  Rookie Daniel Te’o-Nesheim will mainly play tackle on passing downs.

I thought Darryl Tapp was in danger with the brief signing of Pannel Egboh and today’s trade for Antwan Barnes.  The Eagles gave up a lot for him, so he’ll be Cole’s backup on the right side.

Barnes has played linebacker before, but after the Chris Gocong experiment he mainly play DE.

Victor Abiamiri was placed on the PUP (physically unable to play) list, but I think if he was healthy he would’ve been released.  Rookie Ricky Sapp was placed on IR.

Defensive Tackle

Mike Patterson and Broderick Bunkley are the starters, no surprise there.  Antonio Dixon is the biggest defensive lineman and a very competent run stuffer.

Trevor Laws worked his tail off this offseason and it paid off.  He’ll be a pass rushing tackle.  Look for rookie Jeff Owens to sign with the practice squad.

Linebacker

It was a surprise to me that the Eagles kept seven linebackers.  They normally keep six.  I’m sure Special Teams Coordinator Bobby April had some influence on that decision.

The starters of course are Stewart Bradley, Ernie Sims and Akeem Jordan.  That’s a much, much better unit that the forgettable one that started last year.

Omar Gaither is a versatile backup that has started in this defense before.  Moise Fokou started on the strong side last season.  The Eagles have been working him as a defensive end on recently.

Rookies Keenan Clayton and Jamar Chaney are going to be heavily depended on for special team plays.  The biggest surprise was getting something in return (2012 draft pick) from the New England Patriots for Tracy White.

Cornerback

I thought the Eagles would keep five corners but they chose six.  I hope Asante Samuel’s tackling and Ellis Hobbs physical play in the preseason continue in the regular season.

Joselio Hanson’s the nickel back again, but I’m not sure it’ll be for long.  Rookie Trevard Lindley is going to keep pushing for playing time.  Dimitri Patterson is the fifth corner, but don’t underestimate his abilities.

The Eagles traded rookie RB Charles Scott to Arizona for rookie Jorrick Calvin.  Scott was released today while Calvin did enough on one game to warrant keeping around.  He’ll be the primary punt/kickoff returner.

Safety

Keeping just three safeties is a risky move.  Look for the Eagles to make a move for another one.  They definitely will sign one to the practice squad.

I knew Quintin Demps and Macho Harris were fringe players, but I didn’t expect BOTH of them to be cut.  Harris should be signed to the practice squad.

Two of the safeties are rookies, starter Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman.  The other is Pro Bowl 8 year veteran Quintin Mikell.

Special Teams

The only member of this unit who was challenged was punter Sav Rocca and his competition (Ken Parrish) was released 3 weeks ago.

Not only will Rocca punt, he’ll hold for Pro Bowl kicker David Akers.  Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Dorenbos completes the roster.

Practice Squad Prediction
1.    Macho Harris-CB/S
2.    Cornelius Ingram-TE
3.    Jeff Owens-DT
4.    Johnathan Crompton-QB
5.    Herman Johnson-G
6.    Charles Scott-HB/FB
7.    A.Q Shipley-C
8.    Jordan Norwood

Overall

This is a very talented team, but very young.  There are twelve rookies and only nine players have more than 5 years of experience.

I expect a lot of growing pains and a few close losses.  Their schedule is probably one of the five toughest.

My 2010 prediction: 8-8.

I don’t get the whole practice squad thing. So few members stick with team, from what I recall. Look at 2008 practice squad: Andy Studebaker, CB Trae Williams, wideout, Shaheer McBride, CB Kyle Arrington, FB Jed Collins and DT Mike Marquardt, OT Chris Patrick and WR Willie Reid. Why haven’t they been developing a tight end or RB all along?

“G” …Thanks for your 8-8 prediction

That kills the addition by subtracion “Lie” we have heard through this off season.

This team is less talented and a big part of the mediocre predictions really is the subtraction of “5”. If Mcnabb was on this same team this year with an improved pass rush, with Jackson and Herremans back in the line up, we would be talking about a team improving on last years disappointing end.

We would be talking about the playoffs or even a Superbowl run……I think that kills the other “lie”….that the way this team do business allows the Eagles to compete for “MULTIPLE CHAMPIONSHIPS”….with a great chance to make the playoffs each year.

“G” your 8-8 predicion is all good for the losers who have accepted mediocrity but I’ll take it a step further.

This squad will barely win “5” GAMES.

Songs, please do everyone a favor and put the “TIMES YOURS” signature to rest. It’s extremely cheesy. It’s one thing to hear it from Andy Reid 16 times a year but to hear it from you several times a day just gives me a headache. I’d rather have bamboo shoots shoved up my fingernails. Please come up with something more creative and most importantly, something more funny. For the record, there should be an apostrophe in “TIME’S,” so at least type it correctly if you insist on using it as your go-to line. Finally, please get over McNabb leaving. If it’s that big of a deal, I’m sure the Redskins would love to have you posting on their chat boards. You’re really not an Eagles fan anymore so accept it and move on. Nobody on this site likes you or wants you around.

@1960
The practice squad is not a safe place to develop to talent as they can be signed away by any team at any time. Hopefully the new CBA will address this issue with expanded rosters. The overwhelming thought in Pro football for years has been to not need to develop players other than QB’s. This is why so many journeyman players exist. I believe the thought process is changing and teams will begin having more projects that last 2-3 years but fill in in a pinch.

Good stuff Haran,

The Eagles and Coach AR really did like TE C Coffman when he came of out college (Missouri I believe)
a couple yers back, he’ a a very pass rusher, good size who needs to bulk up a bit but would make a nice back-up to Celek in case of injury and another Red-Zone threat..
I believe they will make a couple of moves to solidify the Safety spot and pick-up a veteran, there were a few released.. As far as your practice squad, I believe some other teams will be interested in and sign
WR Kelley Washington (the Redskins,Panthers,Vikings come to mind), I also think that DT J Owens will be signed to an NFL roster (Falcons,Broncos,Seahawks) and most likely Harris to the Ravens or Redksins…
I do think OT K Dunlap is the next player released if they make a move and would not be surprised to see a trade involving DE D Tapp,CB J Hanson or LB Gaither if th eright deal came up…

This year’s young team is actually more interesting to me than the last couple years… not saying they’ll do much or any better than 8-8, but that’s really not bad when you consider that all these rooks will be significantly better by end of season. Will enjoy watching the rooks make more plays. Nobody really expected (be honest) the former team, with McNabb, to smell a SB; the year they lost to the Cardinals really exposed how vulnerable the team was. To beat the Giants/Cowboys then blow that game was as bad as Tampa and Panthers loss in NFC championship. Now if Reid can’t get this team to 13-5 by ’12, he MUST go. The team needs to be playing for a SB title by ’13, and being favored to win it all! Experienced rookies from this class, plus Kolb’s maturation, plus 3 more #1 picks with at least 2 starting OL’s, and some really smart picks in 2nd, 3rd round mixed with free agents… this team should be right there!!! No excuses Reid.

Iggles…How can a team that will win less games be more interesting? You guys are doing everything to spin what we all know will be a disappointing season. If this team is not better than last years with a run to the Superbowl, Reid should be fired!!!!! No excuses!

We were told the Addition of Kolb meant a better offense with the young guns, and with an improved defense this team is better than last years squad that was 11-5 and at least made the playoffs.

If we are to believe in the organization then let’s start taking them at their word. They told us, “this team should have no drop off with expectations the same”…..Winning a Superbowl. “We are not in a rebuilding year” . This quote actually came from Andy Reid and later was repeated by the front office. So, we’ll take them at their word and expect a better team since there will be no more ground balls from D5. We have a more accurate team leader at the QB position, so we can expect and explosive offense outdoing the younger group last year. Superbowl or change!

I cosign @songs. If this team finishes at 8-8 then it was a huge disappointment. No excuses. It’s funny how the same guys that get on here praising Kolb have suddenly lowered their expectations after they’ve seen him in the preseason. I’m with songs on this one it should be super bowl or bust. Hopefully the kid was saving his best for the reg season b/c you could not play any worse.

The defense is improved and i think the running game will be better. We went too the p-offs last year so i expect a return.Winning a SuperBowl this year is mos def a possibility, but i think we should focus on getting too the p-offs and see what happens from there. I’m letting go of the expectations i had when 5 was at the helm and look for this team too have a new identity.Physical defense and mental toughness. Offensive firepower from every position…look at thease skill guys. The organization can tell me whatever they want i make my own judgements and know that they want a trophy as much as we do. So f all that we were told, we demand a title, we want, we want, we need, and all that.

How do you know this season will be a failure? I mean whats the sense in being negative and tryna convince others who feel pretty good about this young talented roster that there gonna go 8-8. If thats your opinion then run with it soldier. WTF cares just like you dont care that i think theyll be 10-6 or 11-5…12-4 with some injuries too other teams and lotsa D. 3. Niners…no thanks.
4.Cowboys…how many guys from Tri-county like the Boys only cause they were popular, won titles or were taught that crap by there parents(bad parenting)…and its hot as Mercury with bugs the size of golfballs and they’re living in the past.
5. Packers…ehhh…still too cold and i hear its boring as heck.Im a doer and it doesnt sound liek theres anythign too do there.
6.NY…taxes and too much fakeness…

you harp getting rid of a bum, the eagles shouldn’t have signed in the first place a reason for optimism?

The offensive line was garbage last year, yet the “FO” refused to address it in the early rounds of the draft and free agency.

The 1st game of the season is almost here and they’re still trying to get help on the O line?

This organization is seriously flawed and as long as they can shovel crap that the gullible fan base think is caviar….we’ll continue to be one of the few organizations that will never win a Superbowl.

The funny thing about this pathetic fan base is if the Eagles are 8-8, our fans will find room for optimism going into next year…Pathetic

“We can win a Superbowl if our Coach who have been rewarded for doing things one way as a head coach changes philosophy”.

“We can win a Superbowl if our Offensive line is better” – (Didn’t do anything in the early rounds or free agency to fix glaring problems)

“We can win a Superbowl if Kolb become Aaron Rogers”. (Did Aaron Rogers win a Superbowl yet?)

Good question Jroc

I have been a devout fan since the Buddy Ryan Era and believed at one point that an owner would come here and get it right by taking care of their frachise players like Reggie White, Randall Cunningham, Brian Dawkins, Donovan Mcnabb…and build around special players instead of making excuses and breaking team morale. I was told years ago our team would never win a Superbowl and didn’t believe it…Now I wholeheartedly believe the way they do business it will be impossible for us to win. We came close when the Eagles got T.O. on a contract technicality and it proved he was needed, but if his agent would not have screwed him up..the Eagles would have not signed T.O. to give us the one chance we did get in 2004.

The stinking Saints came from nothing and won a Superbowl. We need ownership like Dan Snyer and Jerry Jones…owners who love the city and will not take losing as an answer. We need owners like the Rooneys in Pittsburgh and like the owner in New Orleans..Hell , right now I’d even take the owner in Atlanta…He’s a passionate owner that could get that city a SB. It starts at the top and I’ve never seen an organization so proud of 2nd and 3rd Place…I guess it’s the perfect ownership for fans used to underachieving results.

You don’t get rid of a proven commodity who have good years left in him for the unknown. It’s too risky and the consequences.. if wrong are too grave.

You change philosophy around the QB by helping him with a running game. You improve the other areas…you don’t downgrade a pro bowl area of the team..it’s ridiculous.

That move tells me this organization don’t know what the hell they’re doing and after years of putting it on the line for this team, I feel it’s time to direct my passion against the front office…. instead of Cowboy fans who are right.

Redksin Franchise has been horrible… Look at their record since he purchased the team..

Songs, if a losing owner comes from nowhere to win a superbowl, and we all agree it has happened, then that proves its not about spending, its not about any formula or blame you toss around. Its about winning football games! All your talk goes down the drain if the eagles win. That’s the only thing that matters. And you are correct that snyder cannot be called cheap, not in the least, be he equally cannot be called successful (except financially)! And for the last freaking time, the eagles are not cheap. Prove it, compare the spending stats, and they show that it is entirely incorrect. They are not huge, indescretionary big spenders, the teams that fit that category have been unanimous failures

SONGS your argument is flawed to the point of being ridiculous. You claim that Reid should be fired if the Eagles don’t win a SB this year. Yet you support a QB that has always come up short of winning a title at every level. What in D5’s career makes you think that he can ever do it. He failed to lead any team in college or Pro to a title, even while consistently playing for top ranked contenders. You also claimed the eagles should have focused on drafting lineman, in doing so they would have failed to draft both Graham and Allen. These two players are already starting and should help solidify our defense. We could have an all world O-Line but if our D struggles we will never win. I will take an improved D and this O Line any day. In spite of this line our offense will still average 20 a game. With a great D that would make us contenders alone. Look at Pitts, Jets, and Baltimore if you need examples. Please do us all a favor and just shut up. Nobody wants to hear the nonsense you post. Dan Snyder a great owner? That comment proves your lack of football intelligence alone.

“TIMES YOURS MORON”
So please use it for some thing other than your naughty fantasies about McNabb.

We don’t need Dan Snyder, but I do think we need a slightly more aggressive FO. I don’t think we take enough risks. I don’t mean the kinds of risks like signing a player coming off season ending surgery. We excel at that. But I mean risk like sometimes, forget about the cap effects 3 years later of a move made now and just go for it. Of course, I don’t want to be over the top like Snyder and Jones and go overboard each year but you can never argue that they are not trying to win. Of course we are trying to win, but sometimes it comes into question on whether we care more about money and cheap labor or actually throwing caution to the wind at least once every 3-4 years would be nice.

Songs is over the top a lot but a lot of times the point he makes is valid. Sure, it’s clouded often by exaggerations and pessimistic thoughts but sometimes you guys lose the point in this. I do not agree with everything he says but at the end of the day anything less than a playoff appearance is a failure. They told us we aren’t rebuilding and we haven’t lost anything and we are going for it and the gold standard. So I don’t want any excuses. Truthfully, I’m just sick of Reid. I think he should have lost his job a couple years ago but that’s another story. He’s a good coach but good coaches get fired too. Like players, they may excel better in a different situation.

But back to my point. No excuse for this team. As fans we all have our opinions and some are more optimistic than others and that’s ok. But none of us are better fans than the next because we agree with everything the FO does. As fans, we have the right to praise and criticize the teams that represent our city. I pay for season tickets and I’ll criticize them as much as I praise them. I’m a die hard sixers fan too but we suck and it doesn’t make me less of a fan because I wanted the whole FO from the GM to the coach gone.

you claim that 5 always came up short to win an NFL title and you’re correct but I have a question for you. Wasn’t AR on the sidelines every time 5 came up short? When will you and others hold AR accountable as well? His game planning has been terrible in the playoffs. And where has the defense been in these playoff losses? Especially the AZ and Dallas games the last 2 years. I agree the QB has to take some blame but people that blame the playoff losses solely on 5 are the ones that need to check their “football intelligence”.
