Vick’s Rise And Kolb’s Struggles Have Been Quietly Going On For Months

Many of you are probably shocked by what has happened at the quarterback position for the Eagles, but this isn’t as much of a shock as you would think.  I’m not shocked by Kolb’s struggles or Vick’s progress because neither of these situations have happened overnight.  It was all going on during the mini-camps which the Birds had in the spring and it continued through the summer and is now showing up for all to see in the fall.

The improvement of Michael Vick started last year when he was signed and the problems of Kevin Kolb started when Donovan McNabb was traded.  Kolb has been saying all the right things, but the right things haven’t been happening on the field, since he became the number one quarterback.  It was disregarded by most, but it was happening.

I remember the Birds running a red zone drill in the first mini camp immediately after the draft.  Kolb ran about ten plays and only a couple of them resulted in completions.  Two of them resulted in interceptions, which were run back for scores.  He was running plays that he knew in and out.  I didn’t make a big deal of it but I noted it in one of my reports.

There were many practices during the mini-camps which Kolb performed poorly.  Understand the fact that I remember Kolb being right on target with his throws. when he was the number two guy behind McNabb.  I didn’t make a big deal of his prowess in practice because I know the difference between throwing balls at practice with that red “don’t hit the quarterback” jersey on, as compared to throwing the ball with 11 “hired killers” trying to knock your brains out of your head.

Kolb was up and down at training camp with everybody’s eyes on him.  I saw the coaching staff talking to him and trying to reassure him.  Kolb was pressing and it wasn’t helping him play better.  Say what you will about Donovan McNabb he knew how to keep things loose and laught at the Eagles practices and they missed that this summer.

The guys have benefited from Vick’s swagger.  Vick has a quiet confidence about him that comes from always being the “chosen one” throughout his career.  It makes me think of him grabbing a basketball during training camp, then going up with two hands and jamming it like it was no big deal, to show LeSean McCoy that he could dunk with no problem.

Last Wednesday, Vick talked about having fun playing the game and not taking the games too seriously.  Kolb has been just the opposite.  He’s been stressing and talking about not letting people down.

During training camp, very few times did the offense go out and play with the promise we saw in the Kansas City and New Orleans games from a year ago.  It may have come across as being negative but I simply reported what I saw.  Kolb has been having trouble sitting in the big chair of being the number one quarterback and the progress of Vick has made that big chair more uncomfortable for him.

I’ve always known that being a backup doesn’t have the pressure of being the starter, especially in a place like Philadelphia and especially at the quarterback position.

At that same mini-camp after the draft which I mentioned earlier, Vick was focusing on reading defenses and being disciplined.  It hasn’t been an overnight thing with Vick.  The guy has worked his butt off to get his game together.  Just last week he was talking about making sure he bent his knees when he throws the ball because it makes him more accurate.

Eagles quarterback coach James Urban has spent countless hours working with Vick on his technique and it’s paid off.  There are times he loses his focus by starting to run then not resetting his feet to throw the football.  Urban and the coaches have stressed footwork to Vick and he’s seen it take his game to another level.

Vick had talked previously about living with his playbook.  During the mini and training camps, I could see Vick fighting against his instincts to take off and run on many plays.  It was battle for him to stay in the pocket and set his feet to throw the football.

From day to day there would be progress, but there would be times when he tried to force the ball into receivers that were covered in much the same way he did on Sunday.  Still through the entire time since last year when they signed him, Vick has gotten better just about every week.

For years Andy Reid had the belief that Vick could be made into a pocket passer and nobody took him seriously until now.  I had written last week that I know Steve Young is on their mind when they think about Vick as a reclamation project, but think about what I said now after the performance he put on yesterday.

The sky is the limit for Vick and Reid tried to play it down after the game, but it’s going to make it very difficult for the Eagles to let him go.  There’s not another quarterback in the league who could have done everything Vick did yesterday in the game.

Back to Kolb, the Eagles have got to get him turned around.  He’s got to relax and have some fun playing the game.  He can’t be putting too much pressure on himself.  The coaches need to start all over with him and they shouldn’t go into overload by putting in a million plays.

I think less is more in this case.  Keep things simple and let him have some fun.

Eagles would be fools not to keep playing Vick,
He has the repect of his teammates and the huddle, to bring back a shell-shocked Kolb at this point would send the wrong message to the team about trying to play for the playoffs and championship now..
Team,Coaches, sometimes have th ebest laid out plans, but in ther NFL just like in Life, sometimes you have to scrap your plans and go with your gut instincts and go with what’s right…And for the Philadelphia Eagles, this means with naming Vick as your #1 Starter and going out and trying to win as many games possible… (wouldn’t the NFL and Fox Sports just love a story like this too…it’s almost a no-brainer that Coach AR will screw up and suck all the momentum out from this team and fans…)

But Gary…… he’s SSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO accurate. i mean….. noone gets rid of the ball faster. I mean…. he’s more of a WCO qb. i mean…. Didnt you see how he was in those 2 games last year? I mean….. Hes just young… he IS a rook….oh….i mean… 4 year vet. If we could give him a run game and a D thats better then any other he will win the big one for us. bla bla bla bla bla!!!!

Bottom line…. Kolb has his chance this week. Its a shame the FO, head coach, and “young guns” talked all off season about being so great. Im pulling for ya man. I havent bought the jersey yet but im pulling for ya.

G,nice write up and i had the sense this cat would be a different q in this org.Gary,do they lean on the run game and quick passes when Kolb comes in and i think this makes them more potent in the red-zone with the potential of Vick coming in the ballgame? I dont care about Kevs feeling or his flow.

Great points G, I also remember you giving us a heads up, just beacause you get rid of the ball quicker doesn’t mean the ball is going to go to the right person. Well, the Jags front seven aren’t as good as the Lions front seven, so Kolb may actually have time to throw the ball. Granted Winston Justice doesn’t have ” human turnstile” flashbacks.

Well Reid pushed for Vick’s signing for a reason –had to be because he knew Laurie wanted McNabb gone and Reid really had lost confidence in Kolb as the QB of the future

Yeah Kolb looked bad in Preseason and the hits that he took a starting QB should not be taking preseason –He looks lost and that concussion isn’t going to do much for his confidence which it is evident he didn’t have

But with this O line neither Kolb nor Vick will last long
What Vick have 6 sacks — and that one on the sideline was brutal–yeah he got up but you can’t do that for 14 more games

Most important element in football is the O line PERIOD

The birds better get a 4th QB on the phone for the practice squad

I might add if Reid always thought Vick could be made into a pocket QB then as I posted above he wanted him here for a reason and it wasn’t out of kindness so Vick could get in condition be show cased and they go to ANOTHER team –No NFL coach is that nice a guy

I think the Eagles have invested as much if not more in Vick than Kolb. With the PR hit they took and division amongst the fans for signing Vick in the first place and the countless hours they spent with him on the field in practice and all of the things they have to keep up with off the field as far as community service and stuff, that’s a large investment.

rcp1936, I agree. I think Vick was to be 1 of 2 things: trade bait or insurance for Kolb. They knew McNabb would be gone eventually and they couldn’t just go with Kolb. So you get Vick, build up his skills so you can trade him and get some talent or he surprises you and actually becomes better than the guy that’s starting. Rule #1 with the Eagles is, don’t listen to what they say, watch what they do. After those brutal losses to Dallas, Andy kept saying “Donovan’s my QB”. Well things change. He can say Kolb is the starter all he wants but they can easily change if he stinks up the joint. Could this team actually trade McNabb in the division and upgrade a division rival AND let Vick walk which will upgrade another team? They can’t possibly be that stupid. Can they?

This FO never will admit guilt and bench Kolb. He will QB this season and maybe even next and I am telling you they plan on it …it wont change how bad he is. My prediction is the main reason the brilliant FO got Vick was to trade him . Now with him playing this well they can actually get something for him and 2 it will get rid of the QB controversy. The most important part being the latter. Then we will be stuck with Kolb for 2 season at least.

Got to hand it to you Gary–You did see this from minicamp on through the preseason

Do you think the signing of Vick screwed up Kolb’s mind –not that an NFL Qb shouldn’t be able to handle that situation but just curious –or do you think he was over evaluated by Reid based on his college career

I have a feeling that Kolb is going to be another in a long line of players that the front office over-valued. Stacey Andrews, Shawn Andrews, Jason Peters, Winston Justice, etc…. I could keep going. The difference is, it’s hard to have a “serviceable” quarterback in this league and be successful. Right now, our offense if full of this type player. Desean Jackson and Brent Celek are above average players, but nobody else has really distinguished themselves. I think the Eagles will turn the job over to Mike Vick at some point, either due to an injury, or they will see the writing on the wall with Kolb.

I still think Kolb can and will be a good NFL QB, but he is going to take his fair share of lumps and bruises along the way and he is not a godo NFL QB right now. The way they NFC is wide-open this year, I would continue to start Vick for he gives the Eagles the best chance to win today and for this season. I would put this as the Priority # 1 if I was Coaching or Running the Eagles and worry about developing Kolb as a NFL QB for down the road… “You play to win the game”

We’ve seen Feely put up great numbers against the Patriots. What has Kolb done to be considerd a good QB. I wish him well. He has been in this league 3 full years. People keep comparing him to Aikman and Manning in their rookie year. He is not a rookie. I’m sorry but all the reasons the Eagles said that he was ready to take over he has proven them wrong. Give him another shot but to let him just struggle and our season go down the drain is insane!

In Kolb’s so-called good game, he thew 3 picks and the game was over with 3 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter (33-13), by which time Kolb had thrown only 1 TD.

What has anyone seen that would make them think Kolb is a good QB?

I think Kolb has the physical and mental tools to be a good QB in the NFL..
Is he close to that now, does he have the postiion mastered, aboslutelty not, and he will need a
Season or 2 of real game experience to go through the growing pains that every young QB in the NFL goes thru … I am not so sure that as player’s career is going to be determined by 3 Starts in the NFL..
But for this 2010 Eagles Team, Vick is the best option to win now which is waht I want to see,
put the bnest team forward and play for the here and now.
Now, if they are 2-5 with Vick as the Starter come the beginning of November, than I would start playing Kolb for the 2010 Season would be over as far as playoffs go and then get Kolb the game experiences, but I don’t pull the plug of the season 2 weeks in, go with the hot hand and leader and right now it’s M Vick at QB

I’ve seen NO evidence of Kolb’s quick reads/release, accuracy, or yards after the catch.

If he had displayed any of those qualities, and merely made some mistakes, I could get on board with him. But he’s shown us nothing. 0 TDs and plenty of opportunities for INTs.

drummerwinslow, I think what it ultimately comes down to is that this team is not winning a Superbowl this year. Anyone who thinks they have a legitimate shot is foolish. Assuming we agree on that, what is the purpose of starting Vick over Kolb? For excitement? To sell tickets? To win a few more games this year? He’s gone after this year. People can scream all they want about Kolb not being a good quarterback but the bottom line is; we just don’t know yet. You don’t trade a guy like McNabb to a division rival because of Kolb only to bench him after one bad half of football against arguably the best team and defense in the NFC. I have loved watching Vick play the past two games but you gotta look at the big picture. Very few of history’s best QBs have come in right away and been really good. The position just doesn’t work like that. Give Kolb some time to prove himself. If it doesn’t work out, extend Vick’s contract and rebuild the o-line.

tydm, you are ignoring the other parts of a team. You don’t have to be Peyton Manning or Tom Brady to win a Super Bowl. You just have to be a serviceable QB and not cost your team games. Did you even look at the defenses and skilled players those teams had to win Super Bowls? Seriously? You even throw Ben in there when he was atrocious the first SB and had the best defense in the league in the second Super Bowl. While we on the other hand had the 3rd best defense who go jizzed on by the Cardinals. So stop it with the useless stats. Anyone can find a stat to support their veiwpoint no matter how dumb it is.

To Drummer,
There’s no doubt that Kolb will have to overcome his fear playing behind this O/Line,
If he doesn’t, then he’s done as a NFL QB, I am just not ready to make that assesment after one half
of a meaningful Football game. I think I have posted numerous times during the Summer that it would take about 10 games to a full Season for me to judge on whether a player has it or not…
Do I think Graham & Allen are off to good starts as Pro’s, yes I do, does this mean they will be All-Pros, no,it does not. Are most of us disappointed in Kolb’s performance so far this Pre-season/Early Season, yes we are, does he have a chance to turn it around and improve, yes he does..
Moving forward, I would start Vick and ride that VIck Train as much as I could for he gives the team a better chance to win now which is what I would rather see… As a fan, I want to see the best players out there to give the Eagles the best chance to win, again , this means that Vick is the Starting QB..
(It doesn”t mean that I think Kolb sucks or that he has no future as the Eagle QB, it means that I don’t want the wait and sacrifice the opportunity the team has with VIck now in a wide-open NFC East and Conference right now)

What schill and others were saying during the offseason..(I actually have them all saved)

“Kolb is a better fit for the west coast offense – “Kolb will step in with our skilled positions in place and the offense will be fine,….We should be more concerned with the defense”.- Kolb is more accurate than Mcnabb and we will have fewer ground balls, “Let’s see him in the preseason…
(When he stunk in the preseason the excuses started)…

Excuse 1 – “Kolb sucked” because of the offensive line”

Excuse 2 – “Kolb sucked “because of the playcalling”

Excuse 3 – “Kolb sucked “because of the vanilla playbook

Then we were told…..Let’s wait until the season before passing judgment.

Season Opener – Kolb is the worse player on the field and totally stinks…staring receivers down, lobbing balls up for grabs…actualy threw a ground ball,…. 24 yards in one half and could not outrun Betty White. Totally stinks on opening night in primetime

Then the excuses started again.

More excuses “He’s technically a rookie”, “Reid can’t be yanking him in and out”, “He stinked because we didn’t run the ball”

When these same Kolb supporters realized he just stink they came with a new set of standards.

Standard 1 – “We just need to play him so we can see what we have” – What? Didn’t you say he was more accurate and a leader and this offense should be better with Kolb after 3 years in the system?

Standard 2 – “If he stinks we still need to play him because Vick will not be here next year………… So… are you saying we must tolerate him stinking beyond this year too?

Standard 3 – “We need to play Kolb for if he’s not the answer we’ll draft within the top 10 and draft a future quarterback” – and what? Roll the dice again while you have a very good quarterback and weapon in Michael Vick here already?

Standard 4 – “We’re not going to a Superbowl so it doesn’t matter who plays”.

Folks, it starting to look like fans would rather fail with Kolb or start from scratch with an unproven rookie and waste all the talent we have at the skill positions instead of accepting that Vick might be our best option for the future…Why????

If we have a great athlete and improved QB in Vick it would make sense to improve the weak parts of our team on a quest to greatness….. wouldn’t it?

Why settle for less than what Vick have to offer? ….and if Kolb don’t work you’ll rather be terrible until our team find the next Peyton Manning?

It’s not adding up…. We would rather lose than have Michael Vick as our quarterback when it’s clear Kevin Kolb stinks.

I’m happy things have transpired early for this season will let us know more about the our fan base and whether this organization is willing to compete for a chance of a championship every year…The whole nation is watching and I would n’t be surprised if this organzation choose to lose.

Paul, it sounds like you’re saying that the team isn’t good enough for Kevin to win right now. So, they should play Vick until the team improves. You can’t have it both ways. If Kolb needs experience, let him get it right now. That’s why McNabb was traded.

Randall Cunningham started playing on 3rd and long. And Vick has played with this offense and scored points. This is an excellent time to measure Kevin as a QB. To be a winner in the NFL, he’s got to overcome adversity. Things will NEVER be perfect. He just needs to implement those skills we heard so much about during the off-season. Kolb must read the defenses quicker, thereby making things easier on the offensive line, and he must get the ball out quicker, hitting the receivers in stride to produce yards after the catch.

McNabb played without receivers. What’s the difference? He had to evade the rush more often than not. The Eagles were predictable and threw more passes than any other team. Yet, McNabb had receivers who couldn’t even get off the line of scrimmage. What did McNabb do? He extended plays, giving his receivers an opportunity to get open. Also, McNabb had no running game. Yet, he went on to 5 NFC Championships. He used the tools given to him to the best of his ability. Now, Kevin must use his tools.

Kolb’s already had the “easy learning” period. He has play-makers and his starting running back gained more than 100 yards yesterday. The team will never be perfect and Girls’ High isn’t on our schedule.

Kolb was brought along slowly and enjoyed an “easy learning” period, all the while he made plenty of money. Now, it’s time to play football. Time to put up or shut up!!!

If he fails, we can sign Vick and move forward.
