Eagles Running Back LeSean McCoy Shined In Detroit

LeSean McCoy’s three touchdowns on Sunday was history making to an extent, because this was the first time since 1995, that an Eagles running back ran for three rushing touchdowns in a single game.  Charlie Garner was the back that did it in 95′.

I saw the Eagles working diligently on their running game this past week but I wasn’t convinced that they would use it.  All of us reporters stood there with our mouths open as the Birds worked on running play after running play.  Looking back at the game, I must give Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg credit for executing their plan.

They saw seams inside in the Detroit Lions run defense and they believed they could exploit them.  That’s why I thought it was foolish of McCoy to let the cat out of the bag when he talked about the additional running plays which had been inserted in the game plan.

McCoy surprised me with his bursts up the middle.  He’s not really a speed back like Detroit’s Jahvid Best, but he’s got an incredible burst for about 40 to 50 yards.  Notice that on his long run, nobody was closing in on him.

Remember that McCoy only ran a 4.6 or 4.7 in his forty-yard dash coming out of college.  McCoy has game speed but not testing speed.

The second-year back has great vision and he’s able to cut on a dime.  Those factors came into place when he shot through the middle of the Lions defense on his first touchdown run.  It looked a lot like he TD run he had in week one against the Packers.

Center Mike McGlynn did a good job of sealing off one of the defensive tackles, then right guard Nick Cole went downfield and took out the middle linebacker.  McCoy was by the backer before he could recover, then he just beat the safeties with his quickness to get in the end zone.

McCoy has a knack for finding the end zone and he seems to shift to another gear when he sees paydirt.

I also liked the way he knows how to find the first down sticks when he gets the ball on screens and other passing plays.  In the first two games of the season, McCoy has played remarkably well.

The youngster still has work to do when it comes to picking up the blitz, but Reid has to be pleased with his play so far.

McCoy you have talent. But not poise. Several times I thought you were going to get flagged. End Zone celebrations, ready to fight after a late hit. Often the ref flags the person who respones to the late hit. Please go back and look at film of Jim Brown and Walter Payton. Show some class. If the Eagles draw that muscle bound ref, you will get flagged.

On the flip side I understand your explosion of emotion seeing how rare Andy Greed turns loose the running game. But the object is to win the game. Talent in the NFL is nearly equal. That’s why the team with the fewest turnovers and penaltys usually win.

Like you said G, running is gonna be easier with Vick as QB. Probably going to be harder to run with a less elusive QB back there and a ton of blitzes. Hard to believe that Kolb is gonna have a QB rating of more than 100 with this line combination, but I have confidence in the Fat Man, so we’ll see what decision he makes. Maybe Kolb takes another week to recover?!? OR he has an extremely short lease possibly like Young in Tennessee.

Not to take anything away from McCoy because he did an excellent job at exploiting the holes made, but those holes aren’t nearly as wide without Vick in there. Did you see how far apart those tackles were? The had to line up like that to keep Vick in the pocket. With a different QB in there, they are closer together and crashing the middle. This is more reason that you need Vick in there. He helps the running game because of his presence and his ability to elude tacklers makes down field plays more achievable. Shady did his thing though. No more dancing around.

Hey G, remember when you were complaining that Lesean was talking too much about the Eagles running the ball this week…….hell….after that performance, we should just mail our opponents our gameplan every week!!

Yesterday’s game showed that the Lions are still a pretty bad team, and that the Eagles aren’t a whole lot better. Our offensive line has really fallen apart over the last 2 years, there really isn’t a standout in the group. Outside of Stewart Bradley, our linebackers are not very good.
The phases of the game that bothered me the most were our pass protection, our run defense, and our pass rush.
I was happy with the play of Mike Vick and Shady McCoy.

wow, this must be philly. Guy has 100 + rushing game, with 3!, 3! TDs, and all of the posts are about the QB getting the credit, the other team just being bad, or the RB having to do things differently. We can’t just say that McCoy is a good RB? Nah, that’s to optimistic and not philadelphian….

What are we waiting on to extend Vick contract? Whether we keep him or trade him, we won’t to get something in return for our sacrifices. I don’t think it’s smart to just let him walk into free agency at the end of the season with no compensation.

McCoy looked great

Wonder if they will start using him more like Westbrook and use him in the passing game more often

As far as extending Vick’s contract I think Reid would do that in a heartbeat

It is Laurie that has to be convinced just like he had to be convinced to take Vick to start with

Kolb keeps looking bad –Even Laurie will change his mindset about Vick –especially if Vick keeps his life in order

schiller, if you watched the post game shows on both fox and comcast you would see that they all pointed the same thing out. Whether you like it or not, it’s the truth. No way a D-line is spread that far out with most QBs under center. The difference in the NFL is a second and if a lineman is out of position a big play happens in the blink of an eye. And no one’s giving Vick all the credit, but his presence does get some.

There will be no Football in 2011 with a planned lockout by Owners and a mutual Players Strike
It will be very unlikely that any player over the age of 28-30 years old gets a contract extended now that this season has started

Paulman, didn’t you predict that Gaither, Hanson, and Patterson wouldn’t be on the team? So why should we buy what you’re predicting now?

Career passing efficiency:
Cunningham 56%
Mcnabb 58%
Vick 54%
Roethslithberger 65%
Brady 64%
Manning 65%
Brees 70.1
Last four have 1 more Super Bowls
tydm says:
September 20, 2010 at 1:28 pm Career Passing is key to winning SB. Eagles and Reid philosophy of throwing all the time that 57-58% hurts us compared to 65(usually their superbowl year it’s more) it means more 3 and outs. I loved watching Randall, 5, and Vick, but i know what the results are. no, i am not a hater or racist, i am a mut myself and best friends are are races. But we need more pieces of the puzzle, especially running game, and sure let’s have a scrambling qb but his % better be over 64

That is some real cherry pickin
Fran Tarkenton 57%
John Elway 57%
Dan Marino 59%
Eli Manning 57%
Bart Starr 57%

All you have to do is look at who the career leader (Chad Pennington) is in this and it tell you it takes a lot more than completion percentage to win in the NFL; and as a side note Drew Brees career number is 64.9 not 70.1
I do agree you need more pieces to the puzzle, but the most important pieces are Defense, and a good running game. I have seen teams with average to well below average QB’s win Superbowls with solid defense and a good running game.
After watching yesterday’s game our sole focus should be how did we let Detroit put up 32 points, and make Jahvid Best look like a Marshall Faulk.

Schill, RCP, thats what I am saying brothers, dang fans can not just enjoy a win, its like complaining about a good meal casue they brought you the wrong drink. I hear you guy’s issues and you are right, i agree with you, but just enjoy the win I don’t care if the lion’s are a bad team, thats their problem, the official stat from the NFL is a win and at the end of the season that is all the NFL will be looking at, wins! I am like you guy’s its all about perfomance during the game and for a little while after the game when we to come on here to rant, but when its over all I care about is if we won.

There is plenty to fault this team for this game and we should that is the fun part of posting on here to talk to each other and express our views, but is any body really happy about the win? I am not complaining about anyone here, just curious if anybody is even remotely happy we won, shout one for the gipper. As always GO EAGLES, long live the FAN.

Scorp, your are correct Vick helped the run game so thumps up to you on that call, still McCoy had to make the run, if it was easy every back would do it. And yes Javid Best is going to hurt a lot of teams before it is all said and done this season, in fact I am hoping he does, I want him to run the hell over the Cowboys, giants and redskins (absolutely no love for these teams). Why couldn’t Mcnabb who I love play somewhere else so I can cheer for him (Becasue it is not going to happen while he is in that uniform. hmm okay maybe a little bit sorry). GO EAGLES

To Schiller
For the Record,
I would still like to see LB Gaither,DT M Patterson,DB Hanson off this Eagle team..
I think it would be an improvement and rather see younger players like Clayton.Cgheney,J Owens
and Lidley play more than 3 Overpaid, underperforming Veterans listed above

rhfast, in my opinion passing % is very important. Best example is 4 last qbs to win the SB. Brees 64.9% career but 70.1% SB year and 83% in SB. Brady, Manning, Big Ben all three about 64% . only exception is Eli with 57% but his SB yr was also his highest % at 61. Bart Starr’s 57% led the league back then and his SB was 62% and 64%. Tarkenton and Marino never one SB thnx for proving my point

Great defense is #1, then #2) solid 0-line, but qb with a passing % atleast ave 64 is crucial. Dilfers and Elis can squeek through occasionally but they were not repeaters. With teams passing more than ever, higher %(completed passes) will give u more first downs and less 3 and outs, common sense.
