With This “O” Line, How Will The Eagles Protect Kevin Kolb On Sunday?

Are the Eagles going to try to work out some type of truce with the Jacksonville Jaguars, so they don’t come with all out blitzes against them on Sunday?  Are they going to send Kevin Kolb out there in a red “don’t hit the quarterback” jersey?

How is Kolb going to survive behind the Eagles offensive line and blitz pickup?  Will Andy Reid negotiate a treaty which prevents the Jaguars from blitzing as long as Kolb is in there, but they’ll be able to send the house if Michael “Ninja” Vick is in the game?

Those were the questions people were asking during and after the game.  Some fans who had been in Kolb’s corner exclusively were starting to lean toward playing Vick after the outstanding performance he put on yesterday.

Kolb will be returning to the lineup after a concussion and he’ll be taking snaps behind an offensive line that looks about as difficult to run through as some creek water.  They were overwhelmed and bullied by the Detroit Lions front four, so what makes anybody think they can protect Kolb.

I don’t know what it was about left tackle Jason Peters’ left ankle that had everybody hitting it.  It was amazing that a player had guys hitting the same left ankle over and over.  I know he’s not a popular player but I give him credit for coming back into the game.  He got that ankle cut out from under three times.

Right tackle Winston Justice did a poor job three or four times when he allowed a pass rusher to pressure Vick. He’s got to play better against the Jaguars.

I’ll give the interior of a line credit for opening the way for LeSean McCoy.  Center Mike McGlynn and guards Todd Herremans and Nick Cole did a great job on the first McCoy touchdown run.  They were also instrumental in the other runs he made up the middle.

Back to the quarterbacks, Vick, who may be the best football player in the NFL, had to work his magic in order to still have his head on his shoulders after the Lions sent everything but the kitchen sink to get him.  If Jacksonville comes with the same kind of pressure will Kolb survive.

Think about it.  The Eagles are sitting down a quarterback who has put together two games with over a 100 quarterback rating.  The guy is completing over 60% of his throws and getting little if any protection from his offensive line. This same quarterback is one of the best athletes in the NFL and has proven he can make throws from the pocket under intense pressure.

They’re going to hand the ball to a quarterback, Kolb, who looked scared a week ago against the Packers.

Should the Eagles run the ball every play?  Will Kolb be able to get rid of the football before he gets clobbered?

I know DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin said publicly that Kolb is the team’s number one quarterback, but what are they saying privately to their loved ones.  What are they saying to each other?

Last year everybody was talking about what the lockerroom wanted, why aren’t we asking those same questions now.

Kolb must go out there and prove he should be the guy under center.  He can’t be running out of the pocket like he saw a ghost.  Kolb must stand strong in the pocket until he feels pressure from a free rusher.

This Jacksonville isn’t a test for Andy Reid because Reid has a resume.  The Jacksonville game is a test for Kevin Kolb.  Vick got it done under intense heat, can Kolb do the same.  We will find out on Sunday.

With Vick in the game the offense is opened up because of his elusiveness. Shady had yardage because of Vick’s presence. In six quarters the offense with Vick scored 52 points. Kolb is under great pressure. He was leaving the pocket early last week because of the rush. Now with a concussion in his first start, let’s see how he performs.

Is it remotely possible that 24 run plays by the Eagles, not counting QB runs, are a result of Reid’s epiphany that a running game helps protect the QB from a crappy pass blocking O line, opens up the receivers and helps keep gaining postive yardage instead of sacks and incompletions? Now, I’m not ready to anoint the all-knowing coach the Burger King crown just yet but, lets hold hope that a majority of the prep work this week is focused on burning a blitzing defense and keeping significant pressure off of the QB that has little game time NFL experience settle in and get the Offense out of park and in to drive.

This is a Test for Andy Greed as well. He has to call a game that takes the heat off of Kolb. Screens, Draws, Quick Slants and a running game. The Ravens won the superbowl with a bum at QB. A running game sets up play action. Cut out all the stupid penalties. Line up were your supposed to. There were alot of drops in the Detroit game. Even Avant dropped a pass. Catch the damn ball. That’s why you get paid millions of dollars! Stay late after practice and catch the football. Riley Cooper welcome to the NFL. Grab and fall. Grab and fall.

I feel like every article I read on this site last week expressed how clearly the offensive line wasn’t doing a bad job.. and then this article pops up.

My feeling is this: I want to see kolb play, I want to see what this guy has! He has sat on the bench for to long for all of us to still not know what he has. It would be ashame to throw him back to the bench so quickly. I know how good Vick is, but this team isn’t built to win a superbowl this year anways. we all know it!

So, with that being said, lets put kolb in there, and hope he finds a way not to get killed.

we need to see what Kolb can do but i certainly dont thin Andy Ried is going to sacrifice wins. If Kolb continues to struggle then I’d like to see the product that gives us the best shot to win. I hope Kolb plays well, having two good QBs is a great problem to have, but Vick has been playing some outstanding football and made prolly 6-9 plays yesterday that Kolb physically is just unable to do. With a bad offensive line running the football is a must b/c he helps give the defense on their heels. Shady is a very good back and needs 20+ touches a game.

Vick played a fantastic game and deserves to be the Starter..It’s about winning games and right now,
he clearly gives them the best chance. AR should ride the “Vick Train” until the wheels falls off.
To be honest, with this O/Line, I don’t any see how any QB is going to last that many games for Vick still took a lot of shots yesterday
On a side note, did anyone see what the DE’s from the COlts (Mathis & Freeney) did to the Giants O/Line.. Does anyone see Justice and Peters stopping and or even slowing those 2 down,,,

This Eagles organization is made for the stupid fans in this town. You trade Mcnabb for a damn stiff…Then disrespect one of the best athletes in football ? Now, the new excuse is because “We’re not going to the Supebowl this year”? Is that all you guys can come up with now? We’ll let’s play every player on the team that’s scared and not ready so we can lose every game since we’re not going to the bowl. Let’s play 2nd and 3rd stringers instead of wasting talent on a throw away year…and don’t give me this garbage that the organization invested in Kolb…they invested in Stacy Andrews…where is he? This organization will never win a Superbowl because they just don’t get it.

You go with the hot hand in a wide open league in which anything can happen..the Cowboys are 0-2, skins are 2-0….We can make a run with “the best quarterback and player” on the team and actually get to the playoffs where anything is possible…

The best thing to do is play Vick to make a run and if we’re not in a position by mid season…end the season with Kolb to give him experience for next year.

rcp1936, what’s your point? That’s the life of an NFL QB. How many INTs should Kolb have thrown? There were 3 that the Packers should have had in the 1st half. So again, what’s your point?

I don’t know why fans are getting so upset that the fat man is going to put Kolb in next week even though Vick is the right choice.
Kolb will be heading to the hospital by the end of the 1st quarter with this O-line.
Can anyone make out Reid’s thinking this offseason on the O-line and why he did not think that O-line was a priority this offseason?
I thought his philosophy is that it all starts with the O-line and the D-line and these are the two weakest parts of this team.
Both lines got completely manhandled yesterday…..what do you guys think? Wellwellwell?

Kolb should be on a short leash. Kolb has done nothing to earn “this is Kevin’s team”. That’s a joke. If he stinks, yank him and put the better player in. One of the problems with the Eagles in the past was giving extensions to young players too early and they either became unhappy with their contract or they didn’t live up to it. So they were left to keep playing the player because they were “financially committed” to them. Guys like Reggie Brown, LJ Smith, Shawn Andrews are examples of this. Just go with the best player period.

yeahyeahyeah, I heard a lot of people say that. I heard someone on the radio say “The QB controversy will handle itself when Kolb is getting carted off the field and Reid has no choice but to go with Vick for the rest of the year”. And then at that point they’ll have to extend Vick because they don’t know how Kolb will come back from the injury. I don’t want to see Kolb get hurt but if something like that happened, deep down, there would be a relief in Andy because he would not have had to make that decision publicly.

on the vick thing
this is the 1st time he has had weapons
when he was on the falcons they would lead the league in rushing every yr and would only throw like 9 or 10 times a game
he is with andy now and getting to drop back 30 times a game i think this makes him more dangerous
also for the 1st time vick is not the man and has to prove himself i also thinks this is helping him play better as well

That’s the best I ever seen Vick play (as far in staying in the Pocket and throwing the ball)
Good for him and good for the Eagles who should continue to start him if they are serious about making a playoff run.. The NFC is wide open for the taking wih teams like the Vikings,Cowboys,Giants,49ers all struggling so far. If they go to Kolb and he struggles for a game or 2, then you bring back VIck and maybe this majic would be hard to replicate… Go with the hot hand while the pot’s in the fire…

Songs, so you said ‘(you) trade McNabb for a damn stiff’ – ok, let’s look at that. McNabb was traded for 2 draft picks. 2 draft picks, not humans, two draft picks. Can two draft picks be a singular person? And a stiff at that? Nope. And let’s look at the two draft picks, one isn’t a person yet, so let it be known that Songs has declared the person who the Eagles will select with that draft pick next year, to be ‘half a stiff’. And that’s not the best part, Song’s says that Nate Allen. A rookie free safety who is averaging an interception for game in his first 2, and that’s just part of how he is playing very well right now – he’s ‘half a stiff’ too to songs.

WHAT DA HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT SONGS? This shows how your (ridiculous) emotions cloud your judgment to the point of speaking total bullcrap.

And let’s be fair here, Kolb had a good game last year against KC, and everyone says, come on, it was KC. Vick does that against detroit, and everyone says, Vick is a true starter in the NFL. He’s back to the real deal….hmmmm that’s a double standard. I’m not saying I didn’t love the way Vick played, but if we’re going to do a straight up comparison, they both have 1 win v. crappy teams so far. Then why is Vick getting the hype after 1 good game against a crappy team? If Kolb then has a good one v. Jacksonville, is he absolved of his criticism then? That would be the fair standard we’re holding vick to here…

Well, to you YYY, I’ve always said that Kolbs success or failure on this team depends on the OLine. Vick is a special breed of player and if the OLine continues to play poorly then it wouldn’t matter if it was Kolb, or Manning, or Brady back there, they’d get killed. Poor OLine play is not the best barometer for the play of your QB. If the OLine was playing beast football and Kolb could stand tall in the pocket and play his game you guys up here would be singing a different tune. Kolb has talent and skill that will never be recognized because he’s too busy running for his life because 5 guys don’t do their job. I have faith in Kolb and if the OLine can pull it together so can he.

Look, I personally think that Best is a BEAST and he will run like that on most teams this year. I really do. I drafted him in fantasy and will ride his stats all year. That having been said, I’m not making excuses for Omar Gaither – he is not a good backup MLB, he should ONLY be a backup WILL, but I don’t think our D Line/run defense is that bad at all, especially with Bradley in there (not that we can count on that for long). I think Best is going to do that to many teams this year, even against the best run defenses.

songs- in case you missed it, the ‘skins lost in ot. they are 1-1 not 2-0 as you stated.

With the state that this o-line is in, our best chance right now is for Vick to play. He has lost weight from last year and his quickness is back. He made some good throws from the pocket, and used his athletic skills to get out of trouble.

In SONGs’ heart of hearts the skins are 2-0, they’ll go 16-0 and 5 will always be his MVP
The only reason we need Vick is not for his immense talent, it’s because of the lack-there-of on this OLine.
I’d rather see the Eagles bring back the Hammer, Martel Mallett instead of Scott.
I bet we see more running now, because we don’t have a choice.

McNabb was shocked when Kolb was drafted–Had to work on his mind

AND the QB of the Future Kolb had to be shocked when Vick was picked up

Reid didn’t sell Laurie on the idea of Vick because Reid was being a nice guy and wanted to help Vick out –this is the dog eat Dog NFL

I think if it was up to Reid Vick would have been the started since Minicamp but he has to convince Laurie

As much as he wants Kolb to succeed not Vick Laurie will be convinced if Kolb keeps looking lost

And even if Vick gets named starter With this O line even Vickhe will get worn out

I do think they can waive the following 3-4 players
RB M Bell, WR H Baskett, ILB Gaither, DE D Tapp for now for I see very little impact from them.
I would rather have RB Martell or Scott, WR K Washington , DE Pannel Ogbah
and search around for another MLB. (J Mays probably wouldn’t look too bad right right now)

I live in MN now… i dont listen to anyone…. here is my take….

I dont think andy wanted to change qb’s. I think that choice was made for him. I (unlike many) think that Jeff really wants to win and that he cares more about that then just the money. and i feel that he wont settle for a system that doesnt seem to work. All eyes are on reid now. I think (as ive said since easter) that he has 2 years to get this right. What do i mean by right??? Well….. we need to be in NFC champ games again. Thats my opinion…. i dont care what media says… the media cares about selling papers… thats all. You couldnt be more off base with that thought schiller.

Dont you think that Jeff notices things like no timeouts?? How about Andrews’s… and Peters?? And all the other things that have not panned out. I dont care that McNabb is gone… i really dont. I dont care for this FO one bit…. im not Songs but im tired of being told that the turd i see in front of me is Gold.

What schill and others were saying during the offseason..(I actually have them all saved)

“Kolb is a better fit for the west coast offense – “Kolb will step in with our skilled positions in place and the offense will be fine,….We should be more concerned with the defense”.- Kolb is more accurate than Mcnabb and we will have fewer ground balls, “Let’s see him in the preseason…
(When he stunk in the preseason the excuses started)…

Excuse 1 – “Kolb sucked” because of the offensive line”

Excuse 2 – “Kolb sucked “because of the playcalling”

Excuse 3 – “Kolb sucked “because of the vanilla playbook

Then we were told…..Let’s wait until the season before passing judgment.

Season Opener – Kolb is the worse player on the field and totally stinks…staring receivers down, lobbing balls up for grabs…actualy threw a ground ball,…. 24 yards in one half and could not outrun Betty White. Totally stinks on opening night in primetime

Then the excuses started again.

More excuses “He’s technically a rookie”, “Reid can’t be yanking him in and out”, “He stinked because we didn’t run the ball”

When these same Kolb supporters realized he just stink they came with a new set of standards.

Standard 1 – “We just need to play him so we can see what we have” – What? Didn’t you say he was more accurate and a leader and this offense should be better with Kolb after 3 years in the system?

Standard 2 – “If he stinks we still need to play him because Vick will not be here next year………… So… are you saying we must tolerate him stinking beyond this year too?

Standard 3 – “We need to play Kolb for if he’s not the answer we’ll draft within the top 10 and draft a future quarterback” – and what? Roll the dice again while you have a very good quarterback and weapon in Michael Vick here already?

Standard 4 – “We’re not going to a Superbowl so it doesn’t matter who plays”.

Folks, it starting to look like fans would rather fail with Kolb or start from scratch with an unproven rookie and waste all the talent we have at the skill positions instead of accepting that Vick might be our best option for the future…Why????

If we have a great athlete and improved QB in Vick it would make sense to improve the weak parts of our team on a quest to greatness….. wouldn’t it?

Why settle for less than what Vick have to offer? ….and if Kolb don’t work you’ll rather be terrible until our team find the next Peyton Manning?

It’s not adding up…. We would rather lose than have Michael Vick as our quarterback when it’s clear Kevin Kolb stinks.

I’m happy things have transpired early for this season will let us know more about the our fan base and whether this organization is willing to compete for a chance of a championship every year…The whole nation is watching and I would n’t be surprised if this organzation choose to lose.

Why in the hell do we need to see what Kolb can do..When u know what Vick can do..all this man did was win games in ATL..with a shitty ass J Mora..Reeves for a short period..but now hes getting coached very well..so u take Vick and all his talents and u have a human highlight reel at QB…Now imagine once Reid builds this oline in the offseason..Listen Cick had no oline in ATL and not a very good one now..imagine if he had Mcnabbs oline that he had for his first 8 years in the league..one of the best..Vick has a monster of an arm, very accurate now with good mechanics, and the ability torun for 100 yards in a game at will..SUPERBOWL

Imagine all the preperation Defenses have to do against Vick..u cant bring safeties down because of DeSean..and Maclin..Once u start spying Vick every game then the run game opens up amazingly, we seen on sunday..

Kolb doesnt offer anything that Vick cant already do..niether does McNabb..i dont so why there is a a big indecision..This year if Kolb plays we all better be prepared for a 1-15 season..not becasue Kolb sux..because our line sux..we have one decnet lineman and thats Herremans..this offseason will be the opposite of this year..we better draft like 10 lineman.

I will give the FO a slight pass (Slight I say so no body whine me please, thank you very much), we fans wanted defense for this year and the FO heard us and over drafted to get it right, i believe that we need to fortify behind bradley but we will do good as long as he is in there. Our youngsters on “D” will improve and later all of us will say WOW, just wait fellas and see if I am right.

I think that they thought that the “O” line would be sustainable enough, to risk going heavy on defense for that draft, I am going with SILENCE10 that they are going heavy “O” next draft and might just position some moves to bring in a couple up draft O-guys, there will be a purge and shuffle watch and see.

As for this season, hang on boys it’s going to be lively for sure, and certainly scary at times, just keep the faith we are the best, most savvy fans in the league but we need to work the Karma thing, and get the universe in our favor (Just having some fun fellas). Anyway EAGLES, the Jags are in the crosshairs, load it up, breath, squeeze, stop, exhale and pull the tricker, lets put these guys down, one shot one kill, lets not let them hang around like the lions.

So this is the no koolaid zone, but I need some fans the fire up some win karma with me. You guys are great keep the faith GO EAGLES. forget the FO and coaches for now, its team time, I am down with who ever plays this week from the “O” to the “D”. Later the Monolith Prayer, for now GO EAGLES

I am with you Jroc to a degree, though Cower is not the answer, he finally put together a champ team but he had them steeler fans pissed for a long time, just like Ar has us pissed. If he came here the honeymoon would be short with us philly fans, we are not going to put up with transitioning the “O” to power run, and the”D” to a 3-4, and maybe it still not work. He had +10 years to build his team with statistically less successful tenure than Andy, but like you say a SB is the great equlizer that puts every argument in check, so i can’t say much against a SB Champ coach.

No we need a coach who can tweek and fine tune the talent that we currently have and trust me we have talent to go the distance. Hell if Andy could just tweek himself he would be the perfect coach for us (Is that possible? hmmmm).
