A Closer Look At How Eagles “D” Shut Down Falcons

Sean McDermott and the defensive coaches must have figured out when the Falcons were going to run based on tendencies out of their formations or they were reading the stances of the offensive linemen.

Whatever it was they had their safeties involved in run defense when the Falcons ran the ball, but they had them deep when Atlanta chose to throw.  It’s as if the Eagles were in the Falcons huddle, when they were calling their offensive plays.

The Eagles coaches gave the Falcons coaching staff a clinic, yesterday.

We were all more concerned about the John Abraham versus King Dunlap matchup as compared to the Trent Cole versus Sam Baker battle.  Dunlap took on the challenge and handled Abraham, while Cole showed us why he’s been more consistent in his career than Abraham.

Cole put constant pressure on Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.  He hit Ryan numerous times and sacked him twice while forcing one fumble.

Everybody on the defensive front made a play against Michael Turner and the Falcons running game.   Atlanta was the second leading rushing team in football when they came in, but the Birds held them to 69 yards on the ground.

The tackles were getting penetration and somebody had better get a message to both Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley that Antonio Dixon has been the best defensive tackle on the field, the last two weeks.  That tells me the Eagles should have a three man rotation which Bunkley gets back.

Stewart Bradley didn’t have a great game but he did make a couple of big plays which got the defense off the field.  He got to Matt Ryan on a blitz on third down in the first series.  Later on he stripped the ball out of Jason Snelling’s hands to force an incompletion on third down.

Asante Samuel could have had two or three interceptions in this game.  What a difference his presence made in the secondary this week?  Every time you throw the ball his way, it’s in jeopardy of being picked off.  He’s putting more of an effort in his tackling, but he can still improve his technique.

Teams are going to be targeting Ellis Hobbs more and more as the season progresses.  He was fortunate that the Falcon receivers dropped a couple of passes which could have been big plays.

Rookie Nate Allen took a bad angle on a quick post by Michael Jenkins which turned into a bigger play than it should have been.  He didn’t know how fast Jenkins was.

Quintin Mikell did a nice job of moving in and out of the box to keep Ryan guessing about what defense they were playing.  He helped set a tone on the first defensive series.  He and his teammates let Turner know that yesterday wasn’t going to be a good day for him.

Joselio Hanson made a couple of nice plays when he was in there on nickel.  He’s better in the nickel spot than he is outside at the cornerback position.

I said it before and ill say it again this i very YOUNG AGRESSIVE and TALENTED defense. I really think we have something speacial here and that includes MCDERMOTT sry haters. The only thing i would change which ive been saying is get some drafts picks for patterson and bunkly its time to hand the reins over to dixon and laws.

When the special teams aren’t giving the opposition the ball at the forty etc etc the defense can play a lot better

G,
I thought Bradley played pretty well and bis best overall game of the season..
What were his errors or bad plays.. Lining him up wide in open space versus TE Gonzales,
I thought he did a very good job.. You can’t cover ever pass route and expect to completely shut out a receiver of Gonzo’s talent or any NFL receiver..

G:
Trent Cole! I point to him and say that’s a football player. He never, ever lets up. And he’ll usually beat his man to make a play when we need one. Stewart Bradley was late on his coverages, but he was still effective; and I thought played a very aggressive, hard-hitting game. Game ball to those two and Sean McDermott. You’re right, G, they schooled the Falcons’ coaching staff. I LOVE that!

ive been telling people since dixon became an eagle and blocked a fg last year, that he deserved a chance. laws is playing football this season unlike the other seasons. it is a little early to think laws can start, and bunkley/patterson are more than serviceable.

the eagles usually make their changes at starter around the middle of the season, i guess inserting fokou was a big enough decision for the staff to make and its going well so far. i could see laws/dixon being the future and i hope it happens, but patterson has to be the first to go. wouldnt mind seeing bunkley in a rotation with the other 2 but im with you eagles4ever.

bradley is not the same player he was before the injury, he is using his instincts and smarts but hes nowhere near the athlete he once was. he is slow and not a sideline-to-sideline player this season so far, only time can bring his lateral movements back.

i have a love/hate relationship with mikell because he is good vs the run and a liability vs the pass, but he led us yesterday along with trent cole, coles play speaks for himself he is one of the best. asante is a poor tackler and hasnt improved, tis just bad but i love his instincts. if he pressed a little more he could get more picks. but he is what he is i just wish he was bigger to play safety.

realistically, our defense dominated the #2 ranked run game, and held roddy white to garbage catches. tony g will win any one-on-one but he only got us on a couple plays. great gameplan defense, hopefully we can patch up that 2nd cb spot…

looks like this “spotty defence” that only shuts down bad teams (go back to the comments after the jacksonville game) is doing alright. considering everyone thought the falcons are the best in the NFC.

i have to admit the team is playing better then i expected to this point considering the injuries. but i am not surprised because this team always finds ways to win.

I heard the QB M Ryan (who grew up outside of Philadelphia) didn’t want to play his “A” game since
many of his family, friends had lots of $$$$ riding on the Eagles to win bets and he didn’t want to let them down so he played poorly to help his family/friends out…
… They say the blood is thicker than water/gatorade…

Best tackle of the game IMO, when Kolb brought down his man after he threw the pick. Just balls!

I agree, wonder if Vick or McNabb would have stuck their nose in their and make that tackle..
