Eagles Have Problem A Right Cornerback & Allen Was Taken To School

Jeff Fisher suspended Kenny Britt for the first quarter because of a fight he got into at a Nashville bar a couple of nights ago.  It’s too bad Fisher didn’t suspend him for the entire game.

The Eagles have some serious problems at the right cornerback position with Ellis Hobbs.  He can’t deal with being manned up on a quality receiver.  Britt took him to school.  He said a record for receiving against the Eagles, 7 receptions for 225 yards and three touchdowns.

Hobbs can beat up on smaller receivers, whom he can intimidate and take out of their games, but somebody the size and toughness of Kenny Britt is a different story.  Now for the rest of the season, teams are going to go after Hobbs.

It looked like they were playing man-to-man with help over the top.  Nate Allen has to make some of those plays.  He’s got to be able to either pick the pass off or knock the ball down.

Allen was taken bad angles all day long. It seemed that he lost his confidence and wasn’t going after the football.  You’ve got to attack the ball in the air, like Riley Cooper did in the first half to get that underthrown pass. You’ve can’t ever get caught patting your glove.

I think Allen might have gotten chewed out after the first score and he was thinking about it too much.   In the future, he’s got to put bad plays behind him and continue to play aggressively.

This will be a learning lesson for the rookie.

G, I said it awhile ago, that this secondary is suspect. Nate Allen was out of position, Mikell got beat a few times and this is the Titans. People wanted to act like Hobbs was good enough but that’s because he wasn’t challenged in the past couple weeks. When you start playing the better teams in the league they will be able to challenge each level of your defense. I’ve been worried about the secondary and I still am worried about them. We face some very good QBs for the rest of the year who will be able to exploit a bad secondary and they have weapons that can overpower our small corners.

I hate New England’s trash corners Ellis Hobbs will continue to get expose throughout his career. He makes me feel like I can play corner for the birds.

G – Thanks for the game-time thread. It was good “blogging” with my GCobb neighbors.

I couldn’t believe the game Britt had. If were Fisher, I’d bench him for the first half every week.

Here is a scary thought… In the next 9 games, the Eagles face bigger type of Wr’s like
Colts- P Manning to R Wayne and P Garcon
Giants- E Manning to H Nicks (2 games)
Cowoys – T Romo to Austin, WIlliams & Bryant (2 Games)
Texans – M Schaub to A Johnson and K Walter
Vikings – B Farve to R Moss and possibly S Rice
Only the Bears and Redksins left on their schedule have smaller type of WR’s…

Does anyone think the Combo of QB Collins to WR Britt are as experienced as any of the group’s listed above for the remaing schedule… This Defense will continue to look good at stopping the run because teams will attack this Secondary and Defense thru the air until they show they can stop big plays down the field (just like last year)
Wonder if M Vick can play CB…

I think that Britt is underrated. I don’t know that all of those you just listed will necessarily do what he did against us. Plus lindley could develop and be active, and McD could make some adjustments by then.

Agreed Paulman. That’s exactly my point. This was the Titans and Kerry friggin Collins. It will be hard to get gashed by one other player like that but another team can rack up all those big plays with a collection of guys. In addition to the receivers you listed, those teams have other skilled players who can help add to the damage. So while 1 players might do it, 2-3 can easily with these garbage corners.

McDermott’s play calling didn’t look to be the problem. There were plays where Mikell and Nate Allen both were flat footed instead of reacting to the ball. In some cases, it’s the players. I don’t care what “adjustments” he makes, if the players can’t execute, it doesn’t matter. Then when they focus more on defending big plays and move the safeties back, we’re getting gashed in rushing again and the cycle continues until we have better players. Period.

Honestly Allen hasnt been very good all year. All this hype about being impressed with the rookie was a mirage. Allen plays 20 yards off the ball. All year long recievers have been catching balls in front of him. 2 of his ints were over throws where he was ten yards behind the reciever. I have yet to see him lay the wood to anybody. He is a very soft tackler for a safety. No intimidation what so ever.

Again…while Hobbs is Ass which we said he would be before the season…we wouldn’t be talking about him if Kevin Corny Ass Kolb would have took advantage of the early tunrovers with points and didn’t fumble away the game with a player in his face. He’s a scary bitch of a QB…and we will not beat the good teams with him.

I believe he’s as good as he’ll ever get…and his arm don’t scare anyone. He have the head to break down the defense but not the physical tools to get the ball there. Again..if he executes when the Eagles had the ball in the red zone after turnovers in the 1st half …we’re not talking about Reid, the defense, or Britt

Man, that was tough to watch with Mikell and Allen today. It was like they were both flat footed and played way slower than they normally are. I wonder if any part of it was them being ready to come up for run support. Not making excuses for them, but it looked like they were both off. Q made some plays early in the game but also looked slow at times. Anyone notice how Bradley played? Hobbs sure did tank it today. Dan, that was bad. I thought without him returning kicks he would perform at least slightly better not horribly worse.

SOngs,
I guess you mean C McGlynn and Guard MJG that allowed that defender right in that caused the fumble

Paul, just wanted to point out that you are doing a lot to point out other players for Kolb but last year you had a lot of bad stuff to say about McNabb even if the circumstances were consistent. Interesting.

I know people like to state the “obvious” and repeat whatever said announcer has to say about what the Eagles are doing wrong. The problem is not just being “flat footed”, but its a problem of indecisiveness and bad communication between our DB’s. The REASON they kept saying “flat footed” was bc CB/S didnt know where one was cuttin off and where the other was picking up. Ellis Hobbs is just a sub-par CB, and will not be starting by possibly after the next game if he plays like that again. Kolb DEF had some big missed plays, but when you have guys in your face, it aint that easy. Bottom line, Kolb will be a star QB in this league, and any who thought there would be no growing pains along the way just doesnt understand football. Indy dealt with a 3-13 first year from freakin Manning 56% comp percentage, and 26tds to 28 INT’s…but Im sure all the fans just “knew” he was going to be possibly the best ever….CALM DOWN.

For as embarrassing and tough of a loss as this is, this team will truly show us if this was a “mirage” defensively, and we will get our best player back, or best 2 players back for the Indy game..

Come on. Some people overreact way too much. The defense has many changea and has improved for the most part, and did a great job again of creating turnovers. The britt case is an exception. Hobbs just couldn’t cover him. Period. And yes, allen had a bad game against britt, but he was in the top 5 in ints as a rookie, and has generally outplayed the so hilghly heralded other rookie safties. Are philly fans capable of perspective and not speaking in just extremes?

To Scorpion,
I expect better decision making and overall performance from a 10 year Veteran starting QB with the same team, coaches & system than I do with a 1st year starter…
COlts are hurting real bad with 1 heathly WR and 1 healthy RB, no realt TE threat right now and about 3 healthy O/L. If the Eagles don’t beat them at home, there season and any playoff aspirations will be out the windo, The Eagles should maul them into the ground, this is probably the worst Colt team in the Peyton Manning era (outside of his rookie year). beating them should be expected and not some upset for the Eagles.. Colts are probaby the 8th-10th best ranked team in the AFC and not what they once were…

Paul..With Vick the Eagles will Maul the Colts…and I need to step in the last response you made comparing Mcnabb to a 1st year starter..We weren’t told we were going to have a drop off from Mcnabb,,,… A matter of fact …your qoutes in the offseason mentioned the likes of Brady in his first year…remember those statements? I do you damn loser

Where are your first year success stories now?

Now you are using Kolb’s inexperience to excuse his play..He’s not a rookie…he had game time experience last year and have been in ths system for over 3 freakin years.

He’s a average back up ….he’s a young Collins that’s actually not as good.

Put the game in perspective. We won the first three quarters and lost only the fourth. Kolb could have thrown six interceptions but he didn’t. Hobbs couldn’t cover Britt but he will be fine in coverage with other receivers he faces. Kerry Collins was lucky on his throws. He’s so old it took him three quarters to warm up. Way to lose Eagles. Only ten penalities, better than the Cowboys.

I’m an admitted baseball guy… so maybe the answer to this is obvious. Why doesn’t Samuel cover the top dog on the other team like other “shut down corners” do?
