A Closer Look At The Eagles Defense Versus The Titans

You can’t let one man totally annihilate your defense without making an adjustment to stop him.  The Eagles defense also had too many costly penalties.

I’ve got to give the Birds run defense credit.  This is the third week in a row, which they faced a top running back and they’ve held all of them to around a three yards per carry rushing average.

Chris Johnson ran the ball 26 times for 66 yards which is only 2.8 yards a carry.  Last week they held Michael Turner to 45 yards on 15 carries.  And the week before that they limited to 52 yards on 18 carries.

I’ve got to single out Antonio Dixon for getting into the Titans backfield on a consistent basis.  He was tied for second on the team with six tackles, five solos and one assist.  He also had a sack for the second week in a row.

I don’t think it was a coincidence that the run defense was its best with Dixon in there.

Juqua Parker committed a foolish penalty when he slammed Kerry Collins to the ground after he threw an incomplete pass.  The defense could have gotten off the field, but the penalty kept the Titans drive going.

I want to see more of Brandon Graham.  They’ve got to rotate these guys.  Neither is a full time defensive end right now.

Safety Quintin Mikell had another outstanding game with a sack, forced fumble and an interception. He did a nice job on the sack by getting the ball out of Kerry Collins’ hands.  Sean McDermott is moving him around and he’s making an impact.

Mikell is reading his keys, believing what he’s reading and attacking the play.

I like the job he’s doing as an open field tackler.  He’s wrapping up the ball carriers and  bringing them down.

Outside linebacker Ernie Sims was doing what he does best, which is run around and hit people.  We still don’t see any big plays from this guy.  It’s seven games and no big plays.

He’s probably going to get a call from the league office with some bad news.  He busted Chris Johnson with a helmet to helmet shot.  They will probably fine him and they could suspend him.

Sims was tied with Dixon for second on the team in tackles with four solos and two assists.

Middle linebacker Stewart Bradley wasn’t very active but they did his job against the run although he only had two tackles.  Bradley had two costly offsides penalties.

Sam linebacker Moise Fokou had a good day with five tackles and he did a good job of setting the edge and sending Johnson back inside to the other Eagles defenders.

Defensive end Trent Cole was his active self again this week.  He plays so hard and is a much better run defender than everybody gives him credit for.  He contributed a sack and four solo tackles.

Asante Samuel continues to show why he’s amongst the best in the game.  He ran the receiver’s route for him on his interception.  Why do quarterbacks continue to throw short routes in Samuel’s area?  He usually has as good of a shot at catching the ball as the receiver does.

I would have matched him up on Britt as an adjustment.

Nate Allen led the team in tackles but nearly all of them were on Kenny Britt after he made big catches for huge amounts of yardage.

Allen played like a rookie yesterday.  He was caught looking at the quarterback when he should have been looking at the receiver.  Other times he was looking at the receiver when he should have been looking back for the ball.  That’s what happened on the long 80 yard touchdown when Britt came back for the ball, caught then outran Allen and Ellis Hobbs to the end zone.

He wasn’t playing his help.  If you’ve got help outside, then you take away the inside throw.  Too many times he was giving Britt both options.  You must take something away as a defender.

Veterans on the team have to settle a rookie down in those situations.  Somebody has to talk to him and build up his confidence.  You can’t sit by and watch a youngster get torched like that.

Hobbs doesn’t have the speed to run with the big time receivers in the league.  He will battle them when they come off the line and he can compete with them on short and intermediate routes, but he seems lost after that.  They have to keep a safety deep.

A veteran like Hobbs is supposed to guide Allen through a game like that.  He should orchestrate an adjustment to take Britt away from the Titans.  They were playing as if they weren’t in the huddle together.

The coaches and the other veterans have to help put together a plan to stop one guy from beating your brains in like that.

How about putting a bigger/faster CB on Britt.. (Patterson/Colvin)

I would not have put Samuel on Britt. Too big for him. Asante likes to play off the ball and he’s subject to getting beat deep too with double moves and pump fakes. We should have put Cooper on Britt. He made the best defensive play of the day on a punt thrown by Kolb. He’s big and fast enough and definitely would not have let him catch the ball over him. I’m kidding, but it’s bad when you’re WR looked like a better defender than your starting corner. Hobbs sucks. He always sucked and when it is challenged he gets exposed. McDermott made no adjustment. I mean how many time does the guy have to beat you to make an adjustment? Just when the defense plays well for a couple weeks they take a step back…. and this was Kerry friggin Collins.

This is where having Lindley active would have helped in my opinion. Sure he’s a rook, and still developing, and if they though he was ready, they’d have him up, but he’s definitely better suited physically than Hobbs to cover Britt. I agree that it’s dumb for them to not have made an adjustment. Stick Patterson, Hanson, or even Allen (directly covering him) on him. OR why not straight up double the guy? Can you honestly name ANY other Titan offensive player who had success against the D on Sunday (other than Collins on those Britt passes)…. I can’t. So if we double Britt, we probably don’t get beat by someone else…

Yes, I agree Schiller. I want Lindley in at CB rather than Ellis Hobbs. This is not the Ellis Hobbs from the New England Patriots that won the Super Bowl. His injuries have obviously taken a toll on his skills and abilities. It is a disappointed to watch this man line up in front of recievers each week. But yeah, I would rather see Lindley or Patterson back there. Joselio Hanson gets beat too much in coverage.

I don’t understand why it’s always about the quarterbacks. Maybe we should have everyone else go to the sideline and have the 2 quarterback go at it. The defense gave up 37 points yesterday. If you need to single out a player why not Ellis Hobbs who gave up 225 yards and 3 TD’s to Kenny Britt. I didn’t realize that Britt was the next coming of Jerry Rice or Collins was Joe Montana.

Concerning the quarterbacks it all comes down to Vick being the quarterback that we saw over the first 3 games or the one that we saw in Atlanta. It has proven anything yet.

Diz – actually I think Hobbs played well up until this game against Britt. I really didn’t see him having trouble at all before this week.

dtime – amen…. because it’s easy to get distracted from the bottom line – a football team winning games – when all the media and a lot of fans talk about is the QB situation.

Hobbs was not all the good even back with the Patriots if you ask me…
How does the only player on the Tennseee side of the ball as a Wide Receiver, hurt you like that
and get so open Total Team collapse and this game/loss will come back to haunt them..

schill, I agree about making the adjustment with double teaming Britt. I’m not sure about Lindley though. Not sure they want to have 2 rookies paired up together. And there’s a reason Lindley doesn’t play much. But I do agree, double team him, roll coverage over him earlier or do something. Just poor play and coaching in that 4th.

Yeah Paul, Hobb was always a bum in my book. I didn’t mind him as a kickoff returner and a 3rd CB but not a starter. He’s just not good. When the other team wants to press the issue, they can beat him. We have better QBs coming up with some better WRs. I mean I doubt any 1 receiver will get 200+ yards but we play against a lot of big play guys and our secondary is vulnerable to it, if the other team forces the issue.

schill, I guess you forget the turnstyle defense against Greg Jennings? Or the entire team getting abused by Detroit in the 4th qtr. These guys have had problems off and on all year. They just happened to play against 2 teams the past 2 weeks that do not force the issue passing the ball.

Yeah, Hobbs had trouble with Jennings too. That did slip my mind. But the Detroit thing was a different story, not specifically Hobbs.

Hey, I agree with you that Hobbs is basically a decent return guy (though that may be slipping with age and injuries…can’t really say or care with Calvin being the guy now), but nothing good or reliable at corner. I said that from day one, and was pretty surprised when they went with him at starting RCB. I was hoping all year that they’d use Lindley more earlier on. Maybe it IS the pairing of rookies issue from above, that’s a good point. But with a messy OLine, QB injuries and uncertainty, heck, I just don’t see how it can be that worse putting Lindley in there…

Does anyone still think this Eagles WR/TE Corps is still in the Upper Echelon in the NFC..
I think of the Beatles tune “Nowhere Man” when I think of Brent Celek
I think of “When I’m 64” when I watch WR Avant trying to run away from defenders..
and finally, I think of “Benifit of Mr Kite” when I watch Kolb try to navigate his way around,in the pocket. Chad Hall is more like “Fixing a Hole” as a stop-gap measure and Maclin’s reminds more of a “Little Help from My Friends” since there was no D-Jax around to help Maclin get more room/space
and for Riley Cooper, it was definitely a “Day in a Life” making that grab to save an Inerception and then following up with his 1st TD reception…
Now is we can just figure out who “Lovely Rita” is…

paul, absolutely. I also think that ranking them is as worthless as trying to cover britt with nick cole (or ellis hobbs). You are the only one who cares about that shit. Period

And paul, you’re being to simple to assume that the britt incident will happen again v. other reccievers. The next two weeks (healing, adjustments), line play on both sides, and other factors factor in as well. wgat do you know, here I go again scolding you for making assumptions and predictions again…

My motto is, if Kenny Britt and a 38 year old Jouneyman QB can pick them apart,
then why not these other big physical WR’s who can leap, run and catch and are 6’2″-6’4″” and bigger who have a decided edge on the Eales smallish 5’10”- 5″11 CB’s…
It all gets back to the pass rush (fast balls), if these big talented WR’s and QB’s are given 5 Seconds and longer to coplete big plays down the field, than thats what’s going to happen…What happened to the EAgles Pass rush in the 4th Quarter.. Where was TOp pick B Graham..
