Vick: “I told Andy the other day, we have a great chance at winning this thing”

“I told Andy the other day, we have a great chance at winning this thing”.   That’s what Michael Vick told Andy Reid this week about the team’s Super Bowl chances.

I like the fact that he has this level of confidence.  You can see why the guys on the team believe Vick is their leader.  When he says something, the guys on the team believe in him.

I checked out footage of Vick over the interview he did with Dave Spadaro of PhiladelphiaEagles.com.  In the footage, you see Vick dancing like Muhammad Ali in the tunnel before a game as Stewart Bradley and the team look on.  You can see the team soaking up his confidence.  This is Vick’s team.

Still, my advice for Vick as he gets ready to take back over the Eagles offense, let your play do the talking.  There’s nothing wrong with making a statement behind close doors, but there’s no reason to be out in public talking about winning a Super Bowl.

Let’s try to win some games and look like a playoff team week in and week out.  It’s much too early to be talking about a Super Bowl.

As previously started Vick sat down with Spadaro, talked about the Eagles offense and what he expected of the team after the bye week.

As for the offense going forward, Vick expects a lot.  “Each and every week I expect this offense no matter of who is at quarterback to go out and be dynamic, Vick told Spadaro.  “We have a lot of talent at all key positions.  Upfront those guys do a great job in  protections. We work very hard week in and week out.  I expect us to go out there and continue to move the ball and be explosive, having fun doing what we love to do.”

This is going to be very interesting.  How will Vick play and how will the people around him play?  He emphasized the importance of the team not having lapses for segments of the game, but they need to play well all the time.

“We just have to be consistent throughout the entire game.  If you look at the games we lost, both myself and Kevin got hurt.  Neither one of us finished the game. The game last week we had Tennessee down and we were one play away from putting them away on the goalline.  We just made a mistake that we can’t afford.  You look at all the games we put it all together.  Minus a couple of plays we might be 6-1.”

Will he run the ball with the same fervor which he did in the past?

“It will be no hesitation the thing I will do is be hesitant to get hit and protect myself.  I’ve played that way before.  The year a I ran for a 1000 yards, I rarely got hit and I played 16 games and I thought about what I did that year to preserve my body and preserve myself on the field.

What about his sliding?

“I’m not too big of a slider.   I’m scared to slide…..  I’m afraid of jamming my needs into the ground.  I have a different way of getting down, a way that’s been very effective throughout my career.”

I don’t like the way that sounds.  My advice to Vick, “get you butt on that ground or you’re going to wind up back in the training room”.

Vick does know the way things are in the NFL. You can’t relax for any time during the season or you lose your edge.

“You just can’t get complaisant in this league”, Vick told Spadaro.  “The one thing I know because I’ve been in this league long enough you’re only as good as your last game.  that what drives me and that’s what motivates me.  Makes me want to be great”.

Is this considered leadership?

KTDawk
KTDawk

leadership can be viewed a couple different ways. He may not be inspiring vocally but the enthusiasm and spark he plays with enables others around him to pick up their respective game. I consider this leadership. Look at the Green bay game he came in provided a spark and that is leading my example. He may not be very eloquent when he speaks but no one can deny the guy knows how to play football.

What do you call Leadership? Dont tell me…Jeff Garcia and that RAH RAH bullshit. That Rah Rah shit means nothing at all. Micheal is definitely a leader. Did you not hear what he said in the huddle vs. Green Bay? Michael said, “Alright guys, we’re down but not out. Who wants to help me win this game?” And then went out there and backed it up. Although due to Kevin Kolb’s poor performance, it made it just a little harder to edge the victory. But he’s definitely a leader…thats why his teammates love him.

I disagree with you Mr. Cobb. Dick Vermeil boldly predicted on his TV show that the Eagles would go to the SuperBowl. When even the most diehard fan thought he was nuts. By confess before men it makes you subconisly do every thing in your power to make it happen. And each amount of success makes those around you believe it even more. It’s easy to predict the score of games after the game is over. When you say it before it happens, it puts you in the hall of fame. See Joe Namath.

I’m not being sarcastic. That was a legitimate question. Personally, I believe it is leadership, but I wanted others’ opinions. Why are you being be so defensive? Take it easy. We’re just having conversation. No one’s attacking you personally. Man, I’m getting cussed out for asking a question. Whew!!

It wasn’t that long ago that G posted an article saying Kolb and the Eagles should be thinking about winning a championship now and not later. Most of his points were about not wasting the talents of the skilled players because you never know what will happen and now all of a sudden Vick shouldn’t have Super Bowl aspirations? Personally, do I think this is a Super Bowl ready team? No, BUT no one in the NFC appears to be. If anything, that’s what gives you hope. No one right now is unbeatable especially with a guy like Vick who changes the game just by being on the field. Having said that, they all need to just play and play well. In my opinion, it’s ok to have Super Bowl aspirations especially when the teams around you are so mediocre. Vick is a proven talent in the NFL and I feel he is qualified to talk about his aspirations over players who have done nothing in the league. Just my thoughts.

Drummer, I get where you were coming from. Most fans don’t know what leadership is. They think Jeff Garcia is the epitome of leadership. Regardless of what everyone else thinks, if a man gets his teammates to believe in him and raises their play, that’s leadership. I can give a flying flute about a guy barking at other players or showing anger when something is wrong. Look at Peyton and Eli Manning. Peyton wears his heart on his sleeve. You know what he’s thinking when you look at him. Eli on the other hand looks confused all game and is very quiet but Eli is the clear leader on his teams and his teammates believe in him. And with all the stuff Peyton does on the field he still has the same number of Super Bowls of his dazed looking brother.

Yeah PW, I’m not either but there’s no question about his leadership and he doesn’t grunt all around the field. Most of the time he looks like he’s confused and doesn’t know what’s going on. But that’s Eli. If we had a QB like that here in Philly, people would want him gone because they don’t like his facial expressions. That’s how idiotic some fans are when they think leadership is something that must be visual and vocal.

KTDawk

exactly Scorp. For all we know Vick is vocal and fired up during practice and cool calm and collected on Sundays. We just don’t know, but we do know that his teammates trust him and believe in him and as a QB that is what matters.

Andy is pretty smart yanking Kolb after a week from offenive player of the week. This way the team don’t expose him and will be able to recoup that 2nd round pick, when we ship him to Cleveland or Minnie next season. We can probably package that pick with our number two and get a top corner opposite Samuel and begin next season with a better team around “The Michael Vick Experience”. “I’m Excited”!!!!!!

October 29, 2010 10:20 am

Scorp,

I agree that leadership is difficult to define. Some players instill confidence in and rally their teammates. Perhaps, Eli has that attribute. I don’t know, but I’m not impressed by his skill level. It seems he’s been quite lucky.

As for Peyton, for years, he was labeled a loser who couldn’t win the big game. Then, he won a Superbowl. Last year, of course, he threw a pick to lose the Superbowl. So, what is he now – a loser, a winner, or what?

It’s all a matter of opinion.

October 29, 2010 10:28 am

Yeah Drum. I don’t care much for Eli’s play either but if we’re just talking about leadership he’s the leader of that team. Whether he’s overrated or not, he has a group of young WRs that believe in him and go all out each week. And my whole point was pointing out that good leadership is all dependent on the players that believe. Not what fans perceived or how we think a “real leader” is suppose to act. It was just a contrast between both the mannings of their leadership styles and in the end of the day, Peyton is the better QB but they both have the same amount of jewelry. I think taking something I said and running in an entirely different direction. Just talking about leadership and not if Eli sucks. Because I think we can all agree that Eli isn’t the greatest LOL.

When I read that Vick came into the huddle of the GB game and asked “who wants to help me win this game”…I thought that was ultimate leadership…Confidence is a big part of being a leader…if you have low expectations what will be accomplished? who will follow you? If you dont back it up, who trusts you? after all Mike has gone threw, this team is ready to rally around him…Lets Go Vick, lets go Eagles!

To Drummer,
I was indeed hard on the “Young Guns” back in the Spring/Summer when they were shooting their mouth’s off. I have stated many times that the WR Group is perhaps the best that the Eagles have ever had, but still rank overall average versus the rest of the NFL in my opinion and I still stand by that …
I rate the WR Corps of the following teams to be better all-around than the Eagles corps
Giants,Cowboys,Packers,Falcons,Saints,Cardinals,Vikings,Colts,Texans,Ravens,Bengals,Dolphins,
Jets, Broncos,Chargers whixh is about 1/2 the NFL… D-Jax/Maclin are young and exciting and do have big-play making ability, but they need more consistency in catching the ball and Maclin has improved in his red-zone and blocking ability where D-Jax is just too small to block or really be a threat once in the red-zone..

scorpiodsu
scorpiodsu
October 29, 2010 10:51 am

There’s a big difference between Vick saying he thinks they can win a Super Bowl and the “young guns” running their mouths in the offseason….. Vick is the only one who is a proven player and superstar in the league. So he’s qualified to say it and he needs to back it up on the field as well. The “young guns” were running their mouths talking about how explosive the offense is going to be while they have an unknown QB. That’s when you need to shut your mouth because all of you have something to prove. Vick does still have a lot to prove but at an entirely different level. Kolb had to prove he even belonged in the league while Vick has to prove he can exceed his play in Atlanta. Just like if McNabb was our QB and he said every year “our goal is to win a Super Bowl”, I’m fine with that because he’s qualified to say so. The “young guns” weren’t.

scorpiodsu
scorpiodsu
October 29, 2010 10:53 am

That’s like Colt McCoy saying “I think we can win the Super Bowl this year”. That’s not as acceptable when compared to Brett Favre saying the same thing. As long as he backs it up, no problem. Same thing with the “young guns” they needed to play before they talked about how awesome they were going to be.

A proven player from 3 years ago and a “Superstar” label that the media gave him doesn’t hold water for me after missing the amount of time that VIck has.
I think Vick is on a mission and really has to prove that he’s a legitimate #1 Starter
and a franchise type of player again or a “Superstar”, He obviously has the tools, and is back in football shape, but now it appears he’s better prepared, better coached, more mature and obviously has worked hard to get back to this point. He has lots of weapons around him and plays in a very QB friendly type of system. It’s all there right in front of him, his opportunity to get back into the lime-light and be that Franchise QB on a much better team that he ever had in Atlanta. I am excited about this opportunity for him and the Eagles. No more talk or comments from me about Kolb, the real season starts now and I am 100 % behind Vick for he gives the Eagles the best chance to win now

Falcons – R White, M Jenkins, H Douglas, B Finneran
Broncos – B Lloyd, E Royal, D Thomas, J Gaffney
Vikings – R Moss, P Harvin, Berrian,Camarillo, and S Rice when he returns
Chargers- M Floyd,L Naanee, P Crayton, V Jackson returning soon
Cardinals – Fitz,Breaston,Doucet (can’t help that there QB’s suck and get throw it to them)

A big part of my rankings is the blocking ability of a WR Corps
Avant is average, Maclin has improved a lot and has now become the best blocker at WR,
D-Jax gives you noting as a blocker and I haven’t seen much of Cooper/Hall being able to block
The big downer for me is when D-Jax is not the primary/secondary WR on plays, he only goes at it 1/2 speed and doesn’t really sell it to the defenders on every play like he should..
As a group, Eagles WR are still young and can become one of top groups in the League, but they are not there yet and have a lot of areas in improve to become an “Elite Group”

Eagles are an overall average team in a very average NFL this year (and a below average NFC) .
Vick has the Ability to make this team better by his big-play escapability, make something out of nothing type of plays.. can he sustain it, can he take a hit and remain healthy , can you count on winning games versus good defenses on broken plays… Time will tell..
Eagles need more production from the TE Celek who has really regressed so far this season and have receieved zippo production from Draft pick C Harbor ???
Eagles also need D-Jax back on the field and he needs 8-10 touches a ball game
I would like to see them stay with K Dunlap at LT to see if can continue to progress and play well and especially versus the tough DE’s that are coming up (then trade J Peters after the Season and get a 3rd round pick in return)
I would also like to see more Riley Cooper playing WR, especially on 3rd Down and Red-Zone situations.
Defensively I want to see DT Dixon play over Bunkley/Patterson (I stated this since end of last season) and CB Dmiti Patterson/T Lindley over E Hobbs & J Hanson
DL Graham,Tapp,LAws need more action and would like to see young LB’s Clayton & Cheney play a little with the 1st Unit..

To PW,
Too many of the FAns and local media overstate players ability and because a player has a good game
or season, they think they are All-Pros..
I stated in the SUmmer that there are 4 exceptional-legitmate Pro-Bowler players on this Eagle team
WR/Return D-Jax, DE T Cole, CB A Samuel K D Akers.. and that’s it… Fans and local media wnat to route for the hometown team and I understand that, but I get a little tired of the many who look only thru
Eagle Colored glasses all the time at the Eagles players and overstate their ability and performances

Here is a sampling that I have read about or heard about being potential All-Pro Players from the Eagles Squad LT Peters, TE B Celek, DT Bunkley, MLB Bradley S Q Mickell an All-Pro..
Just like B Graham is going to be Defensive Rookie of the Year when he is averaging about 12-15 playsd a game. It just cracks me up how uniformed many fans and the local media are about players in the NFL and infact. some of these Eagle players would not even be starters on many of the top teams in the NFL.
Avant can catch but can’t run, Maclin and D-Jax can’t catch over the middle or do bubble routes for they are too afraid and will get hurt.. Cooper and Hall are unproven so this Eagle WR corp is very average and if you take away the long ball, what do half the receivers do for you on the other 80 % of th Offensive plays..

They are one of the most all around explosive corps in the league and they have not even hit their stride yet.

You will see come soon and then I want you to get back on this site and make a retraction with the same motivation. Again I say brother pleeeeeeease.
