Reid Should Demand That Vick Play Under More Control To Avoid Injury

“You’ve got to play the game from an instinctive standpoint”, Michael Vick said on his Monday radio in Virginia Beach.  “You can’t predetermine what you’re going to do at the snap of the ball. I just try to let the game come to me.  Whatever a feel that’s what I do.”

I disagree with what the Eagles current starting quarterback said.  We’ve already seen Vick change his game because of the coaching of Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg.  He’s learned to stay in the pocket and give plays a chance.  In the past during his time in Atlanta, he couldn’t resist tucking the ball under his arm off every time he saw an opening in the defense.

He doesn’t play that way any longer, so it proves that he can change.  It proves that he doesn’t play totally instinctive football.

I am convinced that Vick can play under more control and avoid taking risks with his health.  I think he can play the game in an instinctive manner, yet still restrict himself to avoid the big hit.  Like in a two-minute situation a ball carrier can decide to go out of bounds although they have a chance to run for more yardage.  It’s a cognitive decision that overrides the instincts.

I don’t care what anybody says I believe Vick could change his brand of play to give himself a better chance of  staying healthy.  I don’t care how much raving everybody does about Vick’s tremendous ability, you can’t build a football team around an injury-prone quarterback.

He can dial back his runs and avoid getting hit.  It means being just a little bit quicker to give up on a run rather than challenging the defense each and every time.  One of the long-runs he had on Sunday against the Colts should have ended with him going out of bounds.  Instead he stayed in bounds and got hit.

If I was Reid, I would chew Vick out for making that decision because he has already gained 30 plus yards.  He should have gotten out of bounds.  He’s learned to manage his play as a pocket passer, he can manage his play as a scrambler and runner.

I’m still bothered by some of the things Vick has said because the guy is going to get hurt again because he’s going to continue taking shots that he could otherwise avoid.  Another yard or two is nothing when you think about missing two or three games.

On the play which he was injured against the Redskins, he turned the ball upfield and refused to slide or get on the ground as he went by defensive player after defensive player.  He could have avoided the injury by sliding at the end rather than going for the end zone.

If you could force this guy to slide or get out of bounds when he gets in danger, he could give this team a chance to win it all, but he won’t be able to do it, if he’s injured.  This is where I have a problem with Reid and his management of his quarterbacks.

Managing Vick’s decision-making process regarding his health is the most important part of Reid’s job right now, yet he’s treating it like he can’t do anything.

Why couldn’t he have given Donovan McNabb orders during his time here to take off and run in the first quarter to force the other team to honor his threat to run?  He left it up to McNabb and he stopped running all together.  It took a weapon out of hsi arsenal, which should have been flashed for teams to worry about.

In many areas, Reid is a control-freak, but in an important area like Vick’s health, he doesn’t bother taking control.  He acts as if there’s nothing he can do.  This is where he needs an assistant coach who will get in his face and demand that he force Vick to play under more control.

If Vick isn’t disciplined against the Redskins he’s going to get popped and could very well be injured.  If he makes it through the Skins game, he’s going to be at risk against a great pass rush when they play the New York Giants.

This Giants defense has already knocked five quarterbacks out of games.

With the NFC in such turmoil and teams like the Cowboys and the Vikings in disarray, the Eagles have a legitimate chance to go to the Super Bowl, but an injury to Vick would great diminish those chances.

This should be Reid’s number one job but not treating it with its proper importance.  He should force Vick to avoid risky situations which present too much of a chance for him to get injured.  The Eagles post-season chances hinge on Vick’s health.

Good points G,
This is consequence of going with a “Scrambling” type of QB as your #1 Starter..
I don’t think you can take this element from his game for it’s what he’s done his entire career and with
great success since he was a kid…
This also points out why Teams with “Scambling” QB’s have never won the Big Game and typically don’t fare too well come playoff time when going against better Defenses and better Coaching…
There is no doubt that Vick needs to be more careful and get out of bounds or slide down for the Defenses coming up against the Eagles will put more pressure on him..

Good article…… Look we all know that vick is a Qb who has a winners mentality! He wants to do more in other words go the extra mile!!! He’s always been that way since college and he has to realize that he is no longer 20 years old…… I’m 28 and I get pains from GOD knows where and the hits he takes on the field is really unnecessary!!!! So I can only imagine the pain!!!! We’ve all seen Vick….. before our eyes grow to be a Qb…. Lets just hope that he can develope into a smarter Qb by not taking these shots!!!! Go Eagles

One thing I can say is that Vick hasn’t been running reckless like he use to….. So I give him credit on that….. But he needs to learn how to slide but some guys like Vick say “they have to learn how to”! D-Mac was 235-245 lbs in his early years was able to take the shots! Vick is about 200 lbs if that and older now but I believe he will be more smarter as the time comes!!!

G, your correct about that he should demand it…… It’s too risky, and just stupidity to absorb taking hits by guys who out way you by 65-100LBS. more!!!! Vick will learn…..

He should also demand that Peters not go off-sides….but I doubt that will happen either.

I agree with the premise G,
But a Coach “demanding” it once the whistle blows on what a player does naturally may be a little
easier said than done…. Is Coach AR going to fine him every time he takes a hit or doesn’t slide or go out of bounds… remeber, this isn’t the best O/Line in the NFL that he’s playing behind, he will have to make plays with his legs to beat teams like the Redskins,Giants,Bears, & Vikings, I believe and not just be able to stay in the pocket and pass the ball..

But nobody can ever question this guys heart and the passion for the game……. And that can be a curse because you can get hurt…… He wants to win and he’s not playing for stats he’s playing for the Win….. Thats what I like about Vick….. Maybe MM and AR can call better plays to avoid him carrying the game on his shoulders!!! In other words be more balanced!!!!

I agree G…just chew him out in front of the whole team and he’ll understand,it’s for the betterment of the squad. He got out a few times Sunday but after the long run im saying..get out and he gets knocked. Those can turn into ankle sprains or worse someone slams his head into the friggin ground. He needs too wise up so we canmake a deep run too Dallas.

Jroc…thats the one thing that sticks out too me about him as well. He’s a ninja as a q of course. But he seems driven too get this squad too the p-offs. For one…its his job..two..he wants too repay the faithful for giving him a chance. Amazing how this guy has turned his life around.I shake my head at people who are still skeptical of this dude.

P-domis…got some thoughts on a Vick movie.Imma go with Will Smith as Mike…big name will attract a good audience. Have you casted as the prison guard who sneaks Mike play sheets and Yuenglings on his kids b-day.

FYI…Eagles roster moves from yesterday aren’t news brosiff.

Going to have to disagree Mr. Cobb. How many 1st downs did Donavan McNabb leave on the table because he would not run. As Vick stated previously he played a 16 game season rushed for 1,000 yards and did not get hurt. Donavan had his worst injury tip toeing out of bounds against Tenn. He was’nt even hit hard. Let him run. Randall ran. Matt Stafford has gotten the crap beat out of his shoulder and he’s not even a scrambler. Blind side hits, that Winston Justice Prevented on Sunday (thank you winston, I’ll take that penalty any day.) are just as career threating. After all Kolbs concussion came from sorry protection, not scrambling. Fix the darn offensive line, so Vick can have Brady, Manning type protection. Fix the sorry 3rd and 1 offensive playcalling. Let Vick run. He has done a decent job of protecting himself.

PS you never chew out your QB in front of the team. View what Bart Starr told Lombardi when he did it. NFL’s top 100 players had what he told him. Lombardi never did it again.

Man…im talking about given him a word or two when he comes off the field about it. Maybe chew him out if it happens after that. he’s doen a decnet job of not taken too many big hits. But decent doesnt get us outta the first round.

Because if Kolb has to come in, GOD FORBID, we will have NO CHANCE of a Super Bowl or even a win in the playoffs. If pressure in a regular season game gets to Kolb and enables him from playing at a high level consistently, what do you think the playoffs will do to Kevin? Exactly.

@bsmvideos–I saw that and I thought that was most insightful comment I had ever heard from a QB to a caoch….don’t really know if it applies to current day players—but insightful nonne the less
Vicks been injured I think 15 times the most serious was a broken leg in 2003 (MADDEN CURSE…LOL)
and this recent rib injury…he’s never missed more than 3 weeks other than those two injuries

I agree BSM,
Anytime a Coach chews out a player in front of his teammates, peers, and fans, it usually backfires.
I am sure when watching the game tapes with other QB/Coaches, that this is the time to bring it up..
I can hear Coach AR say to VIck, “Hey Mike, great play but you got to get out of bounds right there…”

To Erock,
About a Vick Movie, I would cast Wesley Snipes as Vick for a couple of reasons
Will Smith is too tall, too well-liked and already has millions and millions of $$$,
Snipes has a little edge about him and some legal issues (About back taxes). He could use the work and the $$$.
Will Smith could play VIck’s lawyer/agent, Queen Latifa as Vick’s mother
Maybe have Ice Cube,Usher,Jay-Z,Lil Wayne play part of Vicks entrouage from his Hood Dayz..
Need a heavy actor (Kevin James or John Goodman) to play Coach A Reid,
and then some small Jewish guys to play the Front Office (Adam Sandler as GM Roseman and
Jerry Seinfeld as Jeff Laurie, Jason Alexander as Joe Banner)

I work on some scripts to run by you

Phillywill and BSM
Vick has made it through only one complete season in his career.
He has missed games every other year. (I earlier posted a list of his injuries to his knee, hammy, quad, shoulders, ribs etc)
He has played in 5 games (3 full, 2 halves) this year and missed 3 games due to injury.
He’s already missed close to 40% of the Birds games this year.
He’s 30+.
He has run for 1000s of yards and taken a pounding doing it.
You know what happens to RBs who hit their 30s.

Yes this is my ‘anti-vick’ bias talking….but everything I wrote above has happened.

Wesley Snipes is a lil long in the tooth bro. Plus he has squabbles…puffs the gooddie i think and we might be on a budget.

Latifah as Vicks mom…classic!!

We will make sure we cast G to play himself and cast “Schiller” as Howard Eskin..
Vick is probably in the best shape of his life right now and even though he’s 30, his body as a NFL is like 26-27 since he hasn’t taken a pounding in the last 3 years or so..He’s a Professional Athlete at the top of his game, I say, it’s time to go along for the ride or get out of the way for the Vick Express. .

Mr Cobb I agree 100%. Don’t try and get extra yards, and protect yourself. Fred Barnett use to fumble all the time trying to get a extra yard. The great Jim Brown said on every carry that if he could not break a tackle on the first try he went down. He finished his career the best there every was and healthy.

Paul Man you have got me excited about that movie. However, John Goodman has lost too much weigh to play Andrew Reid (schiller I no longer call him Andy Greed after sundays great victory). Still that was one fat 13 year old. Sorry could not resist.

Steven R. Schirripa as Andy Reid. As soft-hearted mob foot soldier Bobby “Bacala” Baccalieri on the acclaimed HBO series, “The Sopranos,” . He just played a chef in the Clint Eastwood Matt Damon movie “Hereafter.”

I think 50 cent could play Michael Vick in the movie. Same complextion, haircut, size. I would definitely try to audition for it since I got my VA accent, lol. Who would play Kevin Kolb tho? LOL. And G, that would be the perfect ending to the Mike Vick movie…bringing a Super Bowl home to Philadelphia. The moral of the movie is the redemption and trials in the darkness he overcame to get to the light. I would name it “Second Chance: The Michael Vick Story”
