DeSean Jackson: “I could care less about who likes it and who doesn’t”

DeSean Jackson didn’t back down an inch yesterday when he talked about all the criticism he has received after his celebrated fall into the end zone at the end of his 91-yard touchdown catch against the Cowboys on Sunday night.

When questioned right after the game, Jackson’s quarterback Michael Vick didn’t think the receiver falling into the end was a good idea.  “I was upset about that and I thought it was unnecessary, but that was DeSean having fun” Vick said in the post game news conference.

When asked about Vick’s comments Jackson told reporters in the locker room yesterday.

“Everybody’s not going to like it. I could care less about who likes it and who doesn’t. I do it because it’s entertainment. That’s the type of business we’re in, entertainment. The fans like it. Everybody else, like I say, you wanna talk bad about it, that’s your opinion, I could care less. That’s his own opinion. He’s his own man. I’m my own man. I could of just wished I didn’t get penalized for it, to hurt my team, but as far as me doing my celebrations, doing my entertainment, that’s going to be me and I’ll still do that.”

In truth, the penalty against Jackson was a bad call because he didn’t celebrate after getting into the end zone, he celebrated before getting into the end zone and they allow players to dive into the end zone.  What’s the difference?

Personally, I didn’t like the penalty which he caused but I think they need to talk to Jackson about what he’s going to do if he gets into the end zone.  He’s going to do something, so the Birds need to make sure it’s not going to be something that draws a penalty.

If I were Vick or Andy Reid, I wouldn’t discourage him from having fun because that is what fuels Jackson.  They’re not going to change him and they don’t want to pour water on his enthusiasm.  Jackson’s desire to be great is a major part of what drives the speedy wide receiver and this football team. It’s not a coincidence that the team wins when Jackson has big games.

I think more about the 210 yards receiving than the 15 yard penalty.

As for Jackson’s foot injury and the criticism he’s received after missing practice the last couple of days, the little wideout doesn’t care what others have to say.

“Whatever it is, people make a big deal about it,” he said. “I promise, I could care less about it, it’s not going to make me lose sleep . . . As far as people making a big deal about all these little things, it’s just ridiculous to me. As long as I’m going on the field and producing and doing what I need to do, people shouldn’t have nothing to say.”
Jackson answered some questions about his contract yesterday and doesn’t believe.
“I know what I’m worth”, Jackson said. . . . it’s not going to get in the way of anything. At times, things get in the way, but as a professional, you have to put that aside and just go out there and play football. That’s what I’m going to do. But at the end of the day I’m just going to be myself and I’m not going to change for no one.”

Sounds like a real team player doesn’t he..
If Eagles don’t extend his Contract after this season, then they just better trade him for he will be a
real problem next off-season and become a real distarction.. It’s a shame, but it is what it is…

I think he’s pissed about his contract and it’s boiling over to what he is saying to the media now. The team had better extend him and not get caught up in his number of catches because everyone knows that with Desean in the game, the opposing defense has to pay so much attention to him that it makes things for all the other skill guys immeasurably easier. Lately we’ve been seeing other teams’ safeties laying about 20 yards down the field which allows for all kinds of underneath stuff and makes Shady’s job easier when he gets to the second level. With Desean a threat to go the distance at any time, the defense can’t bring those safeties up for run support and we saw last week how that made Shady’s job easier. This is just one example of how Desean affects everything the defense does. Pay the kid!!

Just saw it reported that it is official….Grossman is starting instead of McNabb in Dallas this weekend.

That team is really a mess….they cut the punter, Hunter Smith, after the blown extra point. He was a real stand up guy and excepted responsibility, but Shanahan is a clown. The longer the team stays in turmoil the better for the Birds.

Amazing how the talk at the time of the trade was that AR wanted to do right by Donovan, therefore didn’t send him to Oakland, blah, blah, blah…..I think that was really what everyone thought. Who would have believed that Shanahan turned out to be such a mess?? Again…good for the birds!!!

No Scorp,
I was being facetious and don’t like D-Jax attitude one bit to be honest with you,
I would trade his ass after the Season is over and move on…
Wha I am saying is, if the Eagles don’t get him a new deal soon, he will become a real pain in the ass
and distraction to the locker room next season which nobody needs.

paulman, I’m not too fond of his attitude either. I love the excitement and youthful spirit he brings to the game but I don’t like the me me me attitude. Like G said, you almost can’t say too much about it because that’s part of his personality that makes him a special player. So you have to hope he smartens up and matures. As we see some people just never get it. TO is damn near 40 years old and still can’t shut his mouth. I would only move on from Jackson if you could get someone to replace him…. like a bigger WR who is also a playmaker. A player like Vincent Jackson or something. But I don’t think I could trade him and then come back with Maclin as the number 1. I just want the kid to shut up though. Show some maturity.

How the hell did Jerry Rice ever become so great without all the BS that Jackson needs

If Akers didn’t have a great kickoff and the special teams didn’t get downfield and the Cowboys start at the 40-45 and go in for a score –a different tune would be being sung

For as explosive and exciting as D-Jax is,
I only see him lasting 2-3 more years at tops with him missing some games along the way,
I wouldn’t give him crazy $$$ for I don’t think he’s duarable enough to play 16 games a season over the next 6-8-10 seasons…
Eagles could get at least a 2nd Round and probably a 4th Round or a 5th Rounder in return for him..
Depending on his behavoir and comments moing forward for the remainder of this season, I would have to think about moving him if I were the GM/HC…

Scorp, sure he can say whatever he wants. Free speech and all that. But I was just saying that I think he could be spouting off and saying dumb shit because he still hasn’t been extended. I would rather have Desean on the Eagles talking occassional junk, than not have him at all. I don’t personally think Desean is going to turn into a team killer like T.O or Randy Moss. For one, it appears that he hates to lose. I’m not sure those other 2 guys even care about winning as much as they care about getting numbers. Desean needs to get paid. He’s woefully underpaid for what he does for the team. ……As far as 5 leading the two minute drill, be realistic. The guys flubbed so many late game drives with the game on the line the last few years in Philly, it’s not even funny. Starting with the Super Bowl, the NFC Championship game vs Arizona, the OT game vs the Bengals, just to name a few off the top of my head. If anyone here thinks Donovan was a good late game QB in the two minute drill the last couple years, stop smoking that shit.

D-Jax did say after the Dallas win that we’ll never see that again trust me……….. He apologized right after the game……. It’s just media asking him the same question over and over agian about it….. LET IT GO MEDIA it happened already so move on……

People are so thirsty to strike negative comments on an successful team this year….. IF D-Mac was our QB this season who cares if D-Jax made that enzone celebration!……. It’s all because the “All eyes on Vick” attention this Season has pin pointed the other players surrounding him!!!!! Let the media have a real story on how the NFL needs to protect players such as Mike Vick with these late hits on him……. But no thats not a good enough story for the people……..
Its a sad sad world we live in……….
D-Jax didnt do anything different than what other players have done…… Whats worse T.O. putting the football down on the dallas star on the 50 yrd. line…….. Randy Moss acting as if he was pulling his pants down and rubbing his A@& on the goal post……. Yes its Entertainment……. But its the media who draw more attention towards certain players……..

Exactly RCP
That’s how many of the players of today arae,
They don’t repsect their teammates, their coaches, the sport and even their fans in a lot of cases..
Many of them think that because they have this special athletic talent, that they can do or say what they want.. Whether it’s entertainment, athletics, or the real world, If the Fans are supporting the teams, players and franchises, than out of repsect for the people who pasy your salary, I would at
least be a little humble and keep things to myself instead of being so arrogant and brash…
“I don’t care what you think” he says, ..If I am M Vick or one of his other teammates (like J Avant or B Celek) and whoever else questioned his judgement and actions, I would take offense and take him behind the old woodshed for a little man to man talk…
He is not bigger than the team or his teammates and coaches, he is a 3 year Vet whose been around now, so he needs to mature and act like a Proffesional like the other 98% of the players in the NFL… If he doesn’t want to conform, then fine some other line of work for if he continues down this path, people will stay away from him like they did when he was coming out of College for the NFL Draft and think he is a punk..(which he isn’t but that’s the perception/tag he will have) so how will that benefit him for marketing/endorsement projects that surely will come his way by his play on the field

Oh and let me just say that I personally didn’t like to hear those types of comments from Desean. He’s in his third year and he should be becoming more of a team leader. I think his contract situation is affecting his comments to the media. It doesn’t seem like it’s affecting his play, he IS averaging 23 ypc right now. But he seems like he’s a little immature and needs to grow up some. I did love the Nestea plunge into the endzone though. I didn’t think it should’ve been a flag. Dallas was hitting Vick out of bounds and pulling facemasks all over the field and the refs call that BS on Desean? That was a joke.

In my opinion, Jackson is a product of today’s athlete/entertainment industry. He knows that doing those types of things can spell endorsement money.

In today’s world, the outrageous sells. When people like Dennis Rodman and Madonna made huge money because of their antics, people barely blinked.

Personally, I watch the NFL for the entertainment factor, and Jackson is very entertaining (end-zone celebrations included).

The NFL has morphed from a league where half-time entertainment was a high-school marching band to one in which Janet Jackson bared her breast. The fact is, the NFL is all about hype and entertainment.

Since he’s grossly underpaid as a player, why not try to cash in on the endorsements? Certainly, he recognizes that his time in the NFL is very limited.

One need only look at the opinions that he should be traded to recognize that he has already missed his opportunity to earn the big money.

Jackson played the good soldier throughout the off-season and during training camp. He didn’t act like T.O., despite watching several Eagles get paid, i.e., Kevin Kolb, as well as players on other teams, many of whom have produced much less than he.

Even if money weren’t an issue, as a drummer, I appreciate showmanship, and as a former player who was undersized, I fully understand his desire to put an exclamation point on his accomplishments. The odds are against and each time he overcomes them, it’s a big deal.

Just one man’s opinion.

I do have a little problem on what he said….. But its business at the end of the day….. The NFL is a shady sport……. Its a what have you done for me lately business…… Look at Marvin Harrison…….. Jackson is a great talent, but he’s not worth the headaches he could cause. He disappears for games at a time and has alligator arms in the end zone. He told TO he was going to set the bar high with his next contract. Not worth it.

Ever since TO left the Eagles front office has gotten alot better at picking wideouts. Avant, Maclin, Jackson and the kid from florida. Trade Djax to the AFC because he will kill the eagles if he’s in the division.

Shaddy McCoy is having an outstanding year and is also getting paid 2nd round money. What happens when DJax has a new contract and Shaddy does not???

Win the Superbowl first. Then talk contract. So far the team has’nt even won the division.

He’s making a ton of money for the league. Every jersey sold, each game moved to prime time, etc. All of that spells money.

Some expect him to act like a robot. If he’s underpaid, no problem, he should just wait. If you get your head knocked off the meantime, oh well. If you’re 24, you should have the maturity of a 35-year-old. I’m sure none of us has done anything in their 20s that was ill-advised. I say, let the guy be an individual. He’s not stopping any of us from doing so. After all, we don’t “own” DeSean.

If the coach allows his celebrations, why can’t we? It’s Reid’s job on the line. Are his celebrations really that big a deal, anyway?

Djax also has Vicks Cannon for an Arm to thank for much of his success. There are not alot of NFL QB’s that can throw like Vick and “SoulJa Boy” won’t last long on slants and hook patterns.

I agree. It was against the COWPUKES, for God’s sake. When T.O. played for the 49ers and disrespected their logo, I was all about it.

On the one hand, people complain about a Cowboy asking for Vick’s autograph. On the other hand, some of those same people have a problem with rubbing it in the Cowboys’ faces. Is there a manual for how each player should act? These aren’t toy soldiers. They’re real people, some of whom have had poor upbringing or have been pampered all of their lives. It’s not like Jackson is out at the bars all night or doing things that negatively affect his performance. If anything, what he does positively affects his performance. It psyches him out. Some people listen to music, other’s eat glass.

Does anyone have a problem with him when he’s waving to the crowd to get them pumped up, which in turn pumps him up? When Iverson put his hand to his ear, that was classic! If Jackson wants to flip into the end zone, I say go for it.

I don’t like flags and was always more of a fan of the Barry Sanders style of ating like you have been there before, but I also like emotion.

I have more of a problem with the overall way that the NFL defines taunting and excesive celebration. Over the past decade it appears that the defensive celebrations on every tackle and sack….the dances, tiger type crawls, ax gestures etc., which are done often on top of or right next to the player tackled, are NEVER called for excessive celebration. I have much more of a problem with that than the DJax fall.

That being said, I generally like players that are understated and let the talking be done with their play on the field. It is apparent that the wide reciever position is where the theatical divas are found, and they are most happy when they can get the spotlight focused solely on themselves.

4 catchs 210 yards….he can say whatever he wants as long as its not about teamates…and he can showboat and cadallac it all he wants…He’ the real deal. And it’s funny the dude gets ripped and he’s been tearing it up since his rookie year.

I don’t care about the celebrations. Whatever he does on the field, I’m fine with. The dancing and “hot dogging” is ok as long as he’s playing ball. I just want him to shut his mouth. Don’t go on the TO show talking about how you are going to set the bar for contracts. Don’t talk about how you don’t care what other people think in reference to a comment ABOUT YOUR QB. Just show some maturity and stop taking the bait. Grow the hell up.
