“Talking About The Eagles” Chat Room With G. Cobb

I’ll be at the Eagles Nova Care Complex all day today.  We’ll hear from Andy Reid at about 11:30, then we’ll head into the locker room and find out what Michael Vick and his teammates have on their minds.

As the day goes by I will be posting information about what’s being said and the health of the players.  I will also be discussing some of the articles that I have highlighted here.

This will article will serve as both the News Room and Chat Room today.  Tell me what you think of some of the articles which I have highlighted here.

Philly.com’s Bob Ford goes through the amazing and unexpected ups and downs that have occurred this year to the Eagles and the three quarterbacks which they had on their roster at the end of the last season, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick.

Vick has resurrected his career and become an MVP candidate. Kolb has seen his career put on hold yet again and endured another year picking splinters.  And McNabb has gone from franchise quarterback to a guy who’s career is now in jeopardy in Washington.  Ford wonders about what the Eagles knew and when did they know it, from McNabb’s demise, Kolb being placed on hold to Vick’s greatness.

You’ve got to check out the article by Sam Donnellon on Philly.com about Michael Vick’s off season workouts with speed coach Tom Anderson. There’s a tremendous video of Michael Vick working out during the off-season.  It shows what Vick did to get his speed back.

Notice not only the drills he has Vick doing, but you should also take into account the role Anderson played in schooling Vick about getting himself together off the field.

On CourierPostOnline.com Geoff Mosher gives us a close up on rookie middle linebacker Jamar Chaney who was all over the field making tackles on Sunday against the Giants. The youngster had 16 tackles in the game.

You can criticize the Eagles defense in their play against the Giants, but there’s one thing they did very well and that’s stop the New York running game and that was very important.

If New York had been able to run the football, the Eagles wouldn’t have had the time to make that amazing comeback.

Paul Domowitch writes an article about Andy Reid’s relationship with current Vikings head coach and former Vikings head coach Brad Childress. Regardless of what you think about Reid as a coach, the guy is a good person. Notice that he guy cares about the people who have helped him along the way.

You get a glimpse at the tremendous brotherhood between coaches once they work together.  They seem to become blood relatives who are bounded to each other after they’ve coached together.

I’ve said this many, many times, fans would shocked at how much the coaches talk to each other through the season.

Jonathan Tamari of Philly.com writes about rookie Nate Allen’s injury, upcoming surgery and how it’s forced changes in our secondary. Fellow rookie safety Kurt Coleman must now take his place and hopefully step up and get the job done.  Coleman, who isn’t on the same level as Allen as an athlete is faster and a better athlete than I thought he was, but he’s got to know that teams are going to be coming after him from here on.

Donovan McNabb talked on his radio show earlier this week about how he felt the Redskins disrespected him by the way they benched him. Instead of coming right out and saying they were sitting him down for the rest of the season,  in favor of Rex Grossman, they leaked the information out all week then told McNabb and made it public at the end of the week.

McNabb shouldn’t say anything else, sit through the last two games, then find a way to get out of there.  He shouldn’t go off on Mike Shanahan because over time everybody will see what a poor job he’s done of putting a competitive team on the field.

Shanahan and McNabb haven’t had good years in 2010.

Sam Donnellon’s article about the speed trainer really showed the commitment that Vick was making after last season…even when he thought he was only getting a chance to be a backup…he could have taken it easy and just did “normal” exercises to stay in shape, but he pushed himself to regain his former speed….I also liked the way Vick ended the article saying that he was looking forward to the workouts again after this season.

G- I know that soon after the birds drafted DJax you had run some articles about him working out with Jerry Rice. Do you know if DJax continues to work out with him in the off-season or has he moved away from Rice?

Happy Holidays G-Man
Have a couple for you
#1) How does it look for DT Patterson, does Coach expect him out for a week or 2
#2) How is DE D Burgess coming along, will he be active for this week by chance…
#3) What is the Status of DE V Abriami, is he still on the Eagle Roster,
is he working out and still rehabbing, and try again for next year, has he been medically cleared or has the Eagles cut ties with him all together… I haven’t heard a thing about him all season…

Thank you and keep up the great job..

With the way this offense is playing, I know Marty has to get some looks for head coaching jobs (if he wants to do that again). If Marty took a coaching job somewhere, do you think Andy would bring back Chilly as the o-coordinator?

To KTDawk
Thanks for Abiamiri update, I figured he would get a medical settlement/buyout out if his contract
but I really never read or saw anything official from the Eagles on his status which is kind of weird..

I think Coach MM will end up with the Cleveland Browns job and probably hire Chilly for the O/C for Browns since both are Holmgrem disciples and apparently are still close with him
I think Coach AR promotes Offensive Quality Control Coach Doug Pederson to the O/C Position
and would not be surprised if a Koy Detmer comes in on the staff as a Quality Control coach

Childress talk…does that mean Marty will be gone? That would concern me, Marty and Vick seem to work well together…qb’s and coaches are unique and either work or they don’t….I always thought that after Randall’s qb coach, Doug ?? Scovil I think, was gone, he never acheived as much

I know that Marty has talked about simularities between Vick & Steve Young…he coached them both. I think that has been good for Mike, I would hate to see him leave after the success they have had this year….maybe Andy can put Brad in charge of video replays.

Childress totally ruined that Viking Franchise by allowing QB Farve to live by his own rules..
Last year they were winning and nobody cared, but this year it didn’t work out too well from the get go
and then losing S Rice for 10 games and havign HArvin miss lot of practice and gams with these migraines.. It just appeard that Childress doesn’t really care much for his players and they seemed to
tun him out after the first 4-5 games and to be honest, I have never been impressed with his game-day on the field coaching.. I hope the Eagles don’t bring him back but I think that coach MM will get a couple of opportunites to be a HC somewhere in the NFL (Cleveland,Carolina,Miami) could all be teams insterested and have Young QB’s on their Rosters that Coach Marty could help develop and these teams are usually cheap and won’t pay big $$$ for Big Name Coaches…

I hear you green, MM has been an important part in the growth of Vick….I dont think MM will be ready to leave after this season even if he gets offers…You have to believe that he will still be considered down the road as well… a year, two, three, maybe even further along….he isn’t a very old guy, he can take his time…He’s witnessing the same things we are and he is playing a vital part in it…I dont see him leaving this anytime soon…maybe this is just wishful thinkng by me….whats the old saying, “if it aint broke dont fix it”

AR said he would consider bring Chilly back to the Eagles…I doubt at this current moment, he was talking about bringing him back as the offensive coordinator…

I’m sure we all would rather have Marty and Vick paired together for the duration of Vick’s tenure here but if Marty gets a head coaching offer, he’s probably going to take it especially if this team wins a championship. He’ll make more money and get to do what he wants. So yes we want him here but he’s only here because he got fired from his old coaching gig. And what Childress did in Minny means nothing when Andy is here watching over things. Childress wouldn’t be running the show. Childress loves athletic QBs. He was McNabb’s coordinator and he draft Tavaris Jackson hoping he could do the same things so I wouldn’t put it out of the question if Marty were to leave. And plus Childress would be a lot more balanced. He might suck as a head coach but that says nothing about him as an offensive coordinator. Wade Phillips is a terrible head coach but I’d take him to run my defense over a guy like McDermott anyday. Not saying that I want Childress here, but if Marty were to leave I’d want him over most people out there because of his relationship with Andy.

December 22, 2010 3:56 pm

green, don’t you hate that man? One of your coaches is doing a good job and then other teams come in a try to swoop them up. Andy, Marty and Vick all work well but if the offense keeps playing like this, it’s only a matter of time before teams will start coming after Marty. It’s funny though how many of these coordinators are great at their jobs and then when they get the responsibility of running the entire team, they can’t do it. Head coaching is not for everyone. Hopefully Marty stays here and not worry about taking a HC gig, but chances are he will want one eventually. I mean I’m sure he has those goals and aspirations as well. We will see.

I agree that Chilly’s relationship with Big Red is strong, but he does not have a relationship with Vick…that is the relationship that should take priority, and the one we were discussing and the one that Marty and Vick currently have.

scorpiodsu
scorpiodsu
December 22, 2010 4:01 pm

I prefer Marty over Chilly, but the thing I think Childress would bring is someone who doesn’t do exactly everything like Andy. I mean Marty is like Andy Jr. With Chilly, he would probably be a little more firm in the system which also bodes for a good healthy working relationship. But again, this is all IF Marty left. I don’t think Marty lasts past next year without offers unless we collapse and all of a sudden we aren’t so explosive.

December 22, 2010 4:03 pm

lol…yeah, I hate it too…you don’t like holding a guy back from realizing a dream of being a head coach or coordinator…but man I hate seeing guys leave when things are going well….Rivera, Frazier, Spags, and so on…I hate seeing those guys leave…

scorpiodsu

December 22, 2010 4:06 pm

green, I agree that he does not have a relationship with Vick but in the even that Marty did leave who are you going to bring in that has a relationship with Vick? Jim Mora Jr.? If Andy had to get a new coordinator, maybe he would promote from within. I could see that but I don’t Andy would promote someone who isn’t qualified just because they know Vick. I just don’t think that’s the sole factor. I would doubt that a requirement to coach the Eagles offense is knowing Vick. He brought Marty in when he didn’t have a real working relationship with McNabb. So I don’t understand why everyone thinks the potential candidate would have to have a good relationship with the qb BEFORE they even got a chance to work together. That’s just not realistic. They both know the system and with Andy there I don’t think it would be a problem. Maybe that’s just me but that’s what I think.

scorpiodsu
scorpiodsu
December 22, 2010 4:08 pm

yeah and Harbaugh and even Chilly was a very good coordinator for us. And the primary reason that Jim Johnson didn’t leave was because of his age and teams weren’t too keen on chasing a guy that old without proven success as a coach. If he was a little younger, he probably would have been gone too.

scorpiodsu
scorpiodsu
December 22, 2010 4:12 pm

Almost any time a team brings a new coordinator in they will not have a relationship with the starting QB. That’s usually how it is. I’m like you guys I hope Marty doesn’t leave but we know this is the NFL and coaches leave all the team (except Andy and Jeff fisher LOL) but in the event he did Chilly might be the best choice if no one currently on staff is qualified. But who knows and we will see. If this team actually won the Super bowl this year and this offense keeps lighting it up like this, I’d almost guarantee he’s gone.

Cleveland,Carolina,Miami,CIncinnati,Texans,Titans,Broncos and Coach MM’s favorite City & Franchise the San Francisco 49ers all will be looking for Head Coaches …
Coach MM will be in big demand so this is probably his final season/playoff run in Phialdelphia

Paulman’s Boone,Nc Odds of Coach MM taking the H/Coach position with the Following teams

#1) 49ers 3-2
#2) Browns 2-1
#3) Dolphins 5-1
#4) Broncos 5-1
#5) Texans 7-1
#6) Titans 10-1
#7) Panthers 12-1
#8) Bengals 15-1

I wish Coach MM the best of luck in his future endeavors, Now let’s win a damn Super Bowl..

Jim Mora Jr….LOL…that was good. Yeah, guess I am making too much of the Marty / Vick working relationship….I am sure that Marty isn’t going to think about it if he gets a job offer…so if he happens to leave, we adjust….and get a new coordinator….but for now we have this great team to enjoy…I’m done thinking about next year, just enjoying this one

Pleasant surprise in Daniel Te’o-Nesheim. After watching the replay he was very aggressive and showed up on film quite a bit. After watching him in preseason and looking to small and lost he looked ok, For a 3rd round pick I guess he should. Anyone else excited about Chaney?

I really like what Chaney brings to the team and field, he’s strong and fast.
S Bradley will return to OLB whenever he gets healthy

Next Season the LB Position will look a little like this

OLB Bradley, MLB Chaney, OLB Fokou
(Clayton and Jordan as Reserves and then some younger draft picks, maybe a Sapp can make the
adjustment to LB)

Gone will be Sims & Gaither

If anyone didn’t read the article here it is:

www. philly. com/philly/sports/eagles/Reid_on_Childress_Im_here_with_open_arms.html

Reid to Childress: “I’m here with open arms”
Andy Reid said that he “would be honored” to bring former Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress back to his staff next season.

Childress was fired as head coach by the Minnesota Vikings last month.

“Brad knows any time Brad wants to come back, I’m here with open arms,” Reid said today in a conference call with Minnesota-area reporters. “I think Brad Childress should be given another opportunity as a head football coach. He does a heck of a job.”

Reid went on to say that he had not contacted Childress, who was with the Eagles from 1999-2005, about a future position with his old team. Marty Mornhinweg is currently the Eagles offensive coordinator, although he has been mentioned a possible head coaching candidate in the off-season.

With the Vikings scheduled to meet the Eagles this Sunday, Reid and Childress had planned on gathering their families together for Christmas at the Reid home. Childress’ firing, of course, changed those plans.

“I can’t tell you I didn’t feel bad about it,” Reid said about Childress being fired after a 3-7 start. “He’s a close friend. I think he’s a great football coach.”

I think without question if Marty is gone for another HC job, Chilly would would get his job.

Brian Baldinger was just on DNL live and stated he has studied the game tape. He said thet Jamar Chaney played the best MLB this team has seen since Trotter in his prime. He said it may have even been better than Trotter. Bradley NEVER played llike this. lol. My question is why did it take an injury to get him in. Why did it take an injury to get Dixon in. We will be saying that about Coleman. Doesnt McDermitt know his personnel?

paulman
paulman
December 22, 2010 6:45 pm

To man with the Golden Gun, I do agree with Baldingers assesment, Chaney was making plays all over the field and was quite impressive from what I watched.Appears to have good command and respect of the Defensive huddles and calls too which you gotta love….
Not to make an excuse for the Eagles Coaches, for this is issue across the NFL and happens all the League and I think it has to do with the compressed these teams face during the Season
Play Games on Sunday and than tracel back, Monday’s the players are usually off to rest,
Tuesday they are going over film from previous game and film for upcoming opponent,
Wed & Thur are full Pratices and Fridays are usaully spent focusing on the Special Teams, Short-Yardage, Red-Zone packages so there is very little time for back-ups to show what they can do at full speed and full contact once the Summer Camp/Preseason games are completed and about they only way they do get a chance is when sompopne aheadd of them gets injured or is just playing so poorly, that the Coach benches a player in favor of a back-up (which doesn’t occur too often by anyone)
Once Sumer Camp breaks, these players are basically practicing in Pads at full speed maybe 2 days a week at most..whcih is why you will always hear players & coaches state that the Summer Camp is the time for young players to really show their Coaches how good they can be.. Once the Regualr season starts, it’s just not that easy to stand out in limited practices.. so you have to make the most of your opportunities whenever you are called upon…
