Former Eagles Linebacker, John Bunting, Interested In Eagles Linebacker Position

According to Geoff Mosher of Delawareonline.com, former Eagles linebacker John Bunting has been in touch with Eagles head coach Andy Reid about their open linebacker coaching job.

Whether Reid decides to hire Bunting or another linebacker coach, I believe he needs to bring in linebacker and secondary coaches who have experience to make up for new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo’s lack of experience.

Although Castillo has a feel for beating blocking patterns because of his experience as an offensive line coach. he hasn’t called defenses during an NFL game.  He must learn the flow of the game and the tendencies of NFL offensive coordinators.

Mosher says Bunting has spoken with Reid at length about the open coaching position.

After retiring as an NFL player, Bunting moved into the coaching ranks. He has served as the assistant coach for three NFL teams: Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Rams, and the New Orleans Saints. As the head defensive coach for the Rams, he played a key role in leading that team to their victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. In December 2000, UNC athletic director Dick Baddour decided to hire him as the school’s head football coach.

Bunting earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and helped lead the Tar Heels to the 1971 ACC football championship.

I always liked J Bunting as a player and as a Coach,
He would be a very good hire and a great fit with the rest of the staff they have now, personality, temprament and scheme wise.. The Eagles can still keep Caldwell as an assistant LB coach
who can be groomed by a real LB Coach who not only has play professional Football but has coached
the Positions in the NFL/College and was also a HC at University of North CArolina

This actually looks like a very solid coach. He has been out of the NFL for about 10 years, but he clearly knows football. Bringing him in as a Linebacker coach really makes some sense.

I wish you could have posted some of his bio for us, rather than make me wiki it.

the Eagles can do much better than Caldwell and Zordich….bring in someone with d-coordinator experience at one of the positions to give Castillo some help….

I think Bunting was HC of UNC Tar Heels up to about 3 years ago when he was replaced by
Current Tar Heel Coach Butch Davis.. hence the NCAA Violations..

Bunting stunk as a head coach at NC. He had the greatest HS player ever and still could not win. Better than Vick.

wikepedia…

Ronald Curry was among the most celebrated athletes ever in the state of Virginia. Nationally, he was among the most sought after recruits in the country. Curry was an All-American in basketball and football at Hampton High School in Hampton, Virginia, where he was awarded the Dial Award for the national high-school scholar-athlete of the year in 1997. He won the McDonald’s Slam Dunk contest and was MVP of the McDonald’s All-American game. By most reports, his high school football coach favored Curry attending the University of Virginia and focusing on football, while his high school basketball coach favored the University of North Carolina to develop Curry into a prospect for the NBA. He verbally committed to play both basketball and football to Virginia before signing instead with rival North Carolina. This made him a very unpopular figure among Virginia fans, who referred to him by such terms as “Benedict Curry”, “Benedict Ronald”, or “WHN” (an abbreviation of “What’s his name?”), and voted to make him the “Sports Jerk of the Year” in the Tank McNamara comic strip. Coincidentally, Curry’s cousin Almondo “Muffin” Curry, a cornerback, later decided to attend Virginia.

Ronald Curry broke several Virginia high school football records while attending Hampton High School. He is considered one of the greatest Virginia high school athletes ever, leading his school to three consecutive state titles in football from 1995 to 1997 and one in basketball in 1998. The 1996 Hampton High School football team went 14-0, outscoring opponents 768-83 including a 51-0 victory over a previously unbeaten Patrick Henry team in the state championship, and is widely considered to be the best team in Virginia history; the 1997 team also went 14-0 and posted similar numbers. Curry also excelled at defensive back and kick returner in addition to his quarterbacking duties. Michael Vick was in the same district as Curry in high school and was overshadowed by the accomplishments of Curry’s team. While Vick was also a highly touted prospect, Curry was almost universally rated higher in recruiting rankings. In an interview, Vick said “I felt pressure to compete against Ronald Curry.”

bsm, Bunting being a bad head coach doesnt mean he would be a bad linebacker coach, remember, he was the D-Coordinator for the Rams when they won the super bowl, Has major experience on D as a player and coach, Could be a big help to castillo, I say sign him asap.

I know this is probably asking for too much, but I want them to hire someone for LBs coach and DBs coach that has the same type of credentials as the coaches they hired for D-line and O-line, to be one of the best at their position. Lets continue this roll of good news.

SportsBum:
You won’t get younger DC’s to move laterally to same position on another team; they want to be HC. Older guys like Washburn have no desire to take on DC position, just like Bunting isn’t interested in anything more than LB assistant… he’s had his “fill” of top positions with extra responsibilities. He’s wanting to come back and get this team to a SB which he also lost as an OLB under Vermeil. Mudd is another older guy out of retirement just looking to work with his buddy Washburn (from 49’ers) rather than being a HC. I like these vet coaches who know how to teach skills/techniques to get them to another SB; they’re in this thing as buddies in common cause. Bunting was not a great player because he didn’t have supreme athletic skills, but he was a smart OLB and Vermeil relied heavily on him as leader on defense.

You are correct. He could be a great LB coach.

I just wanted to take out my frustration that he messed up the career of one of the Greatest HS players ever.

WADR, no, make Seth Joyner the LB’s coach. He’s younger, more intense and a film study hermit. He spoke of fundamentals, and what to expect at the snap of the ball. He also spoke (right on point) of how the Eagles LB’s couldn’t, or didn’t, use their athleticism, because they didn’t anticipate the play. No “tendency study”. Bunting wouldn’t be a bad hire either, but I always liked the controlled fury that Seth brought to the whole team. And I think he can bring that same attribute out in these young LB’s.

Iggles,

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say….. I was saying that I want them to hire proven, top of the line coaches as their DB coach and LB coach, much like they did with their D-line coaching position and O-line coaching position. I want the to find a Mudd or Washburn like coach for their DB coach and LB coach positions.

Does anybody think that now the SB is over we might pick up one or two coaches from either the Packers or Steelers .They would bring some experienced coaches on to the Eagles staff ?
